Thank you for purchasing the Sony Compact Disc Compact Player. Before operating your Discman, please read this manual and retain it for future reference.
About this manual
The instructions in this manual are for the D-835K, D-837K and D-838K. Before you start reading, check your model number. Any differences in appearance or operation of the three models are clearly indicated in the text, for example, "D-837K/D-838K" For the accessories supplied with your Discman, check your model number and refer to "Supplied Accessories" towards the end of this manual.

The model number is located at the bottom and the serial number is located inside the battery compartment. Record these numbers in the spaces provided below. Refer to them whenever you call upon your Sony dealer regarding this product.

Playing a CD in a car
You can play a CD in a car, using your Discman on car battery. You can also use it on house current, rechargeable battery and dry batteries (see "Power Sources" on pages 15 and 16.) For how to install in a car, see pages 13 and 14.

To remove the CD
Remove the CD while pressing the pivot.

To remove the car connecting pack
Press the ▲ (eject) button of the car cassette deck.
Notes on the car cassette deck
- Turn down the volume. - Set the tape selector to the normal (TYPE I) position, and the DOLBY NR, REPEAT or BLANK SKIP switch to OFF if they are equipped.
Notes on the car connecting pack
- If no sound is heard or the car connecting pack is ejected, change the direction of playback on the car cassette deck.
- Never insert the cord end of the car connecting pack into the cassette insertion door. Otherwise, the cord may break or the car cassette deck may be damaged.
- You cannot use the car connecting pack with some car cassette deck.
• The cord should be placed so that it does not hinder driving.
• To disconnect the cord from the Discman, pull it out by grasping the plug. Never pull the plug out by the cord. - With some car cassette decks, you may hear some rattling noise from the car connecting pack. However, this is not a sign of malfunction.
Notes on display
- When you press ▶II (when RESUME is set to OFF), the total number of the tracks in the CD and the total playing time appear for 2 seconds.
- During play, the track number and the elapsed playing time of the current track appear.
- Between tracks, the time to the beginning of the next track will appear with the minus “-” indication.
Notes on handling CDs
• To keep the CD clean, handle it by its edge. Do not touch the surface.
• Do not stick paper or tape onto the CD.
- Do not expose the CD to direct sunlight or heat sources such as hot air ducts. Do not leave the CD in a car parked in direct sunlight.

Using the supplied card remote control (D-837K/D-838K)
You can operate the remote control only when the power is supplied through the DC IN 4.5 V jack.
The buttons on the remote control have the same function as those with the same names on the main unit.

Remotely controllable area
When you use the card remote control, the controllable area is as illustrated. Point the card remote control toward the remotel sensor of the unit.

Be sure that the remote sensor on the Discman is not exposed to direct sunlight or bright light as from fluorescent light, which could prevent the remote control from operating correctly.
To replace the lithium battery
Your remote control comes with a factory installed lithium battery. When the remote controllable area becomes smaller, replace the battery.
1 Slide the lithium battery compartment in the direction of the arrow while pressing the lock switch to the right.

2 Replace the battery with a new lithium battery CR2025. Install the battery with the + side facing up.

3 Insert the lithium battery compartment as before.
Lithium battery life
The new lithium battery usually lasts for approx. 6 months.
Notes on the lithium battery
- Keep the lithium battery out of the reach of children. Should the battery be swallowed, immediately consult a doctor. - Use only a Sony CR2025 lithium battery. Use of other batteries may cause a risk of fire or explosion.
Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat Play)
You can play tracks repeatedly in normal, and shuffle play modes. Repeat all the tracks or only one track.

To cancel repeat play, press SELECT repeatedly until no play mode indication is displayed.
To repeat a single track
1 Press MODE repeatedly until "PLAY" appears, while the track you want to repeat is playing.

2 Press SELECT repeatedly until the "← 1" indication appears.

To repeat another track, press ◀◀◀ or ▶▶◀.
To cancel repeat play, press SELECT repeatedly until no play mode indication is displayed.
Playing tracks in random order (Shuffle Play)
You can play the tracks in a CD in random order.

To cancel shuffle play, press SELECT repeatedly until no play mode indication is displayed.
Note
- During shuffle play, you cannot return to the previous tracks by pressing ◀◀.
Using other functions
To select audio emphasis (DSP) You can enjoy two types of sound effects with the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) function.

To cancel the DSP function, press SELECT repeatedly until no DSP indication is displayed.
Note
- If the sound is distorted when emphasizing bass, turn down the volume.
To prevent sound from skipping
The SUPER ESP (Super Electronic Shock Protection) (D-838K) or ESP (D-835K/D-837K) function prevents the sound from skipping by using a buffer memory that stores music data for about 10 seconds (D-838K) or 3 seconds(D-835K/D-837K). Use this function when listening during a walk or playing in a car.

To cancel the SUPER ESP (D-838K) or ESP (D-835K/D-837K) function, press SELECT repeatedly until no ESP mode indication is displayed.
Notes
- Playing may stop when the Discman gets a strong shock even when the SUPER ESP or ESP function is on.
- When you record a CD on a cassette tape using a tape recorder that has a blank search function, cancel the SUPER ESP or ESP function.
- You may hear a noise or sound skip when:
- listening to a dirty or scratched CD, - listening to an audio test CD or, - the Discman receives continuous shock.
• Sound may drop for a while if you set the SUPER ESP or ESP function to on during play.
To lock the buttons and the lid
You can lock your Discman and the lid to prevent accidental operation.

HOLD/LOCKSlide HOLD/LOCK in the direction of the arrow.
When you press any button, "Hol d" appears.
For D-837K/D-838K, you can still operate the unit with the operation buttons on the remote control.
To unlock, slide HOLD/LOCK back.
To resume playing from the point you stopped the CD (Resume Play)
Normally, every time you stop and play, playing starts from the beginning of the CD. The resume play function, however, lets you listen to from the point at which you last turned off the Discman.

To cancel resume play, set RESUME to OFF.
Notes
• Even if RESUME is set to ON, playing starts from the beginning when you open the lid.
• The resume point may be inaccurate by about 30 seconds.
To turn off the beep
You can turn off the beep that sounds as you operate your Discman.
While you press and hold down ■ STOP/DISPLAY OFF, connect the power source.
To listen with the headphones
Connect the headphones to the ☐ jack firmly.
Connecting to other stereo equipment
You can listen to the CD through other stereo equipment or record a CD on a cassette tape. Refer to the instruction manual of other equipment for details. Before making connections, turn off each equipment.

Notes
- Before you play the CD, turn down the volume of the connected equipment so as not to damage the connected speakers.
• To output the original sound, cancel the DSP and surround functions (see page 10.)
▶Installing in a Car
Where to place your Discman
• Install the Discman and the remote control (D-837K/D-838K) in a location which:
- does not interfere with your driving.
- is not dangerous for passengers.
- does not interfere with the glove box lid or ashtray.
- is stable, and where nothing around it may interfere with installation.
- Do not install the Discman near heat sources or where subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, or moisture (especially on a dashboard.)
Please understand that we will not incur any obligations for troubles caused by incorrect installation.
Mounting your Discman
Attach the Discman to the console box with the supplied Velcro tapes.

Note
- When you are going to park your car for a long period of time, remove the Discman from the Velcro tapes so that it will not be exposed to direct sunlight.
To route the cord
Use the supplied spiral tube to route the cords so that they do not interfere with your driving.

The 4.5V DC plug supplied with car battery cord conforms to the proposed standards of the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ). Do not connect it to other Discman.

To attach the remote control (D-837K/D-838K)
Attach the card remote control with the supplied velcro tapes.
Replacing the fuse of the car battery cord
If the Discman does not operate, check the fuse. If it is blown, replace it as follows:
1 Turn off the Discman and remove the cigarette lighter plug from the cigarette lighter socket.
2 Remove the plug end by turning it counterclockwise.
3 Remove the defective fuse from the plug.
4 Insert the supplied spare fuse into the plug.
5 Replace the plug end by turning it clockwise.

- Be sure to use the supplied spare fuse. Never use a piece of wire as a substitute for the fuse.
- If the fuse is blown again after replacing it, contact your nearest Sony dealer. In such a case, bring the supplied spare fuse to the dealer with you.

Using AC power adaptor
Connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DC IN 4.5 V jack and a wall outlet.

If the AC power adaptor does not fit the wall outlet, use the AC plug adaptor.
Using rechargeable battery (BP-DM10)
Charge the rechargeable batteries before using them for the first time.
1 Open the lid of the battery compartment.

2 Insert the rechargeable battery so that the word "Discman" is facing the same direction as illustrated inside the lid, and close the lid.

When to charge the battery
When the battery is used up, indication appears in the display. Charge the rechargeable battery.
Battery life
When you use the Discman on a flat and stable place, approx. 2.5 hours (with SUPER ESP/ESP on) and 3.5 hours (with SUPER ESP/ESP off) of continuous play is possible.
Notes
- Charging time varies depending on how the rechargeable battery is used.
- If the battery is new or has not been used for a long time, it may not be charged completely until you charge and discharge it several times.
- If the battery life reduces by about half, replace it with Sony BP-DM10 rechargeable battery. Do not use any other rechargeable battery.
To take out the batteries
Press the side of the battery as shown.

When the battery is used up, indication appears in the display. Replace all the batteries with new ones.
Battery life
When you use the Discman on a flat and stable place, approx. 5 hours (with SUPER ESP/ESP on) and 7 hours (with SUPER ESP/ESP off) of continuous play is possible.
Using dry batteries
1 Open the lid of the battery compartment.

2 Insert two LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries by matching the ⊕ and ⊖ to the diagram inside the battery case and close the lid.

Precautions
On safety
- Should any solid objects or liquid fall into the unit, unplug it and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
- Do not put any foreign objects in the DC IN 4.5 V (external power input) jack.
On power sources
- When you are not using the unit for a long time, disconnect all power sources from the unit.
• The nameplate indicating operating voltage, power consumption, etc. is located on the bottom. (On the AC power adaptor for Middle East only.)
On the AC power adaptor
- Use only the supplied AC power adaptor. Do not use any other AC power adaptor.
Polarity of the plug (EIAJ standards)

• To unplug the AC power adaptor from the wall outlet, grasp the adaptor itself, do not pull its cord.
On dry and rechargeable batteries
- Do not throw the batteries into fire.
- Do not carry the rechargeable batteries with coins or other metallic objects. It can generate heat if the positive and negative terminals of the batteries are accidentally contacted by a metallic object.
- Do not tear off the film on the rechargeable battery.
On the unit
- Keep the lens on the unit clean and do not touch it. If you do so, the lens may be damaged and the unit will not operate properly.
- Do not put any heavy object on top of the unit. The unit and the CD may be damaged.
- Do not leave the unit in a location near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or sand, moisture, rain, mechanical shock, unleveled surface, or in a car with its windows closed.
- If the unit causes interference to the radio or television reception, turn off the unit or move it away from the radio or television.
- Do not wrap the unit in a cloth or blanket during use as it may cause malfunction or serious accidents.
On headphones
Road safety
Do not use headphones while driving, cycling, or operating any motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. It can also be potentially dangerous to play your headsets at high volume while walking, especially at pedestrian crossings. You should exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
Preventing hearing damage
Avoid using headphones at high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
Caring for others
Keep the volume at a moderate level. This will allow you to hear outside sounds and to be considerate to the people around you.
Maintenance
To clean the lens
Clean the lens with a lens cleaning kit KK-DM1.

Use a soft cloth slightly moistened in water or a mild detergent solution. Do not use alcohol, benzine or thinner.
Troubleshooting
Should any problem persist after you have made these checks, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
The CD does not play or "no di SC" appears in the display though a CD is placed in the unit.
→ The CD is dirty or defective.
→ Insert the CD with the label side up.
→ Moisture condensation has occurred. Leave the unit aside for several hours until the moisture evaporates.
→ The lens is dirty.
→ Close the lid of the unit and the battery compartment firmly.
→ Make sure the batteries are inserted correctly.
→ Connect the AC power adaptor to a wall outlet securely.
No sound, or noise is heard.
→ Connect the plugs firmly.
→ Plugs are dirty. Clean the plugs with a dry soft cloth periodically.
"HI dc in" appears in the display.
→ Use only the supplied AC power adaptor or recommended AC power adaptor AC-E45HG (not supplied).
"Hol d" appears in the display when you press a button.
→ The buttons are locked. Slide HOLD/LOCK back.
The lid will not open.
→ The lid is locked. Slide HOLD/LOCK back.
The lid will not close and it opens when you try to close it.
→ If the HOLD/LOCK switch is set in the direction of the arrow, slide it back and close the lid again.
The battery life is short.
→ Manganese batteries are used. Use alkaline batteries.
→ Replace the batteries with new ones.
