Operating Instructions

Before operating the unit, please read this manual thoroughly and retain it for future reference.

Owner's Record

The model number and the serial number is located at the bottom. Record the serial number in the space provided below. Refer to these numbers whenever you call upon your Sony dealer regarding this product.

INFORMATION

This equipment generates and uses radio frequency energy and if not installed and used properly, that is, in strict accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, may cause interference to radio and television reception. It has been type tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B computing device in accordance with the specifications in Subpart J of Part 15 of FCC Rules, which are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference in a residential installation. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. Maintenance

Cleaning the Casing

Clean the casing with a soft cloth slightly moistened with water or mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine as they may mar the finish of the casing.

Cleaning the Lens

If you have accidentally touched the lens with a dirty finger or if the dust on the lens prevents the unit from operating properly, open the disc compartment lid and clean the lens.

To remove dust

Blow on the lens a few times with a commercially available blower, brush the dust away in the direction of the arrow, then blow on the lens again.

If the lens is still dirty after you have followed the above instructions and the unit still does not function properly, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.

Notes on Compact Discs

Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or heat sources such as hot air ducts, nor leave it in a car parked in direct sunlight as there can be a considerable rise in the temperature inside the car.

Before playing, clean the disc with the optional cleaning cloth. Wipe the disc from the center out.

Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners or anti-static spray intended for analog discs.

After playing, store the disc in its case.

Cleaning the Headphones Plug

Keep the plug of your headphones clean to obtain the optimum sound. Wipe it with a dry, soft cloth.

Power Sources

When Using Batteries

Install four size-AA (LR6) alkaline batteries.

Approximately 8 hours of continuous play is possible.

Using on House Current

CD player to DC IN 9V AC power adaptor (supplied) to a wall outlet

Notes

• When the player is not used, be sure to disconnect the AC power adaptor.
• When the AC power adaptor is used, remove the batteries.

Note

BATT appears during play or pause, and blinks when the battery becomes weak. also blinks when you press ▶II or ■, or when the player gets a shock.

Notes on batteries

• Insert the batteries with correct polarity.
• Do not use the old batteries with new ones or the different types of batteries together.
• You cannot charge the battery.
• If the electrolyte inside the battery should come into contact, wash the contaminated parts in the battery box with cloth and replace old batteries with new ones.
• When the batteries are not used for a long period of time, remove them.

-If the battery compartment lid is removed.
Replace it by pushing both sides in the numbered order as shown.

Precautions

On safety

- As the laser beam used in this compact disc player is harmful to the eyes, do attempt to disassemble the casing. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only

• Do not put anything in the safety slot inside the disc compartment. If you do, laser beam may come out when the lid is opened. Do not put anything in the IN 9V (external power input) jack.
• The lens on the disc table should be kept clean. Do not touch the lens or poke it. If you do, the lens may be damaged and the player will not operate properly.
• Do not wrap the player in a cloth, blanket, etc. If you do, the temperature inside the player may rise, resulting in malfunction of the player.
• Should any solid object or liquid fall into the player, disconnect the power source and have the player checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further
• When the unit will not be used for a long time, be sure to remove the batteries disconnect the AC power adaptor or mount plate from the unit. To remove the power adaptor from the wall outlet, grasp the adaptor itself; never pull it by the cord.

On power sources

Use batteries, house current, or a car battery.

For AC operation: Use the supplied AC power adaptor. Do not use

any other AC power adaptor as it may cause malfunction

For car battery operation: Use the optional mount plate CPM-100P/200P and car connecting pack CPA-2.

On operation

Since the CD system offers a wide dynamic range, the peaks of the high level in are recorded with high fidelity, and the noise level is very low. Do not turn up the volume while listening to a portion with no audio signals or very low level inputs you do, the speakers may be damaged when a peak level portion is played.

On installation

- Never put the unit:

—near heat sources such as radiators or airducts.
-in direct sunlight.
—exposed excessive dust.
—exposed moisture or rain.
—exposed mechanical vibration or shock.
-in an inclined position.

- If the player is brought directly from a cold location to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the lens inside the play. Should this occur, the player will not operate. In this case, remove the disc and leave the player in a warm place for about an hour until the moisture evaporate:

- For the unit to operate at its best, it should not be subjected to temperatures below 5°C (41°F) or above 35°C (95°F).

Notes on headphones

• Avoid listening with your headphones:
  —while driving, cycling, etc.
  —for an extended period of time at a high volume.
• Remember not to disturb those close to you with the sounds coming from your headphones.
• To obtain the optimum sound, keep the plug of your headphones clean by wipir it with a dry, soft cloth.

Various Ways of Using

Listening in a Car

Plate arm CPM-100A/ 200A (optional) Car connecting pack CPA-2 (optional) to a car cassette deck to LINE OUT to DC IN 9V Mount plate CPM-100P/200P (optional) to a cigarette lighter socket

You can listen to the CD player through a car cassette deck by using the Sony CPA-2 car connecting pack and the CPM-100P/200P mount plate. (The Sony CPM-100A/200A plate arm will facilitate attaching the mount plate to your car.)

Note: Any connection other than with the CPA-2 may cause noise.

Some cassette decks may not accept the CPA-2.

Do not put the unit on a dashboard nor leave it in a car parked in sunlight since the temperature may rise excessively.

For details, refer to the instruction manual of each product.

Note on connecting with the car battery

Unplug the unit from the cigarette lighter socket when it is not being used. Otherwise, it may drain the car battery.

Connecting with Other Equipment

For monitoring through speakers and for recording

You can listen to the CD player through speakers, or record its sound.

Notes on connection

• Turn off the amplifier before making connections.
• Plug in the white plug to the L (left channel) jack, and the red plug to the R (right channel) jack.
• Be sure to insert the cable connectors firmly into the jacks. Loose connections may cause hum and noise.
• Be sure not to connect the CD player to the PHONO input jack of the amplifier.
• If the CD player causes interference to radio and television reception, turn off the player or move the player away from the receiver.

Using a remote commander

Use the Sony RM-DM1K (wireless) or RM-DM2 (wired) remote commander unit (optional).

• Be sure to turn off the power before connecting.
• Disconnect the remote commander from the REMOTE jack when it is not being used.
• Use the RM-DM1K only when the power is supplied from the DC IN 9V jack.
• Detach the carrying belt when you use the RM-DM1K.
• A←→B repeat cannot be performed. (when the RM-DMIK is used)
• You can use the remote commander even when the HOLD switch is locked.

Resume Play

This unit resume the disc play from the point where you pressed

To clear the memory of the stopped point

- Open the lid

- Change the disc

- Disconnect the AC power adaptor or the car battery cord. To keep the memory retained at all times, use the set with the batteries inside

Various Playing Modes
Each time PLAY MODE is pressed, play mode changes.
To stop the disc, press ■.

Troubleshooting Guide

Should any problem persist after you have made the following checks, consult your nearest Sony service facility.
