BIRDERS are a difficult group to please: they want the best optics
available at the best price and in the most user-friendly and conveniently-sized package. Manufacturing such items is not that simple.
In the telescope market there is a trade-off between the size of scope, weight, bulk and optical performance. This is inevitable, though the quality of the images produced by a smaller scope can outweigh their calculated performance. Innovation has meant that zoom eyepieces are now also versatile additions to
the scope armoury.
The Leica 77mm APO Televid was one of the first of the new breed of large objective scopes, with a brilliant 20-60x zoom eyepiece and a range of wide-angle lenses that led the way into the modern era. Other manufacturers have stolen the lead on the production of very high quality smaller scopes and zooms, and Leica have now joined the race with the launch of their 62mm APO Televid in straight and angled versions.
The test model supplied was the straight model APO Televid with a 16-48x zoom eyepiece (the 20-60x zoom from the
77mm range). It shares the other 77mm eyepieces including the 32xWW which becomes a 26xWW on the
62mm and the 20xWW which becomes a 16xWW. A new
32xWW eyepiece designed for the 62mm model (which will be a 40xWW on the 77mm scope) is due to be launched shortly.
I tested the APO Televid 62mm in some of the most exacting of testing conditions that a British winter could throw at it, from horrendous light in fog, mist and murk to torrential rain. For a few hours there was even a little sunshine!
Design and build quality
The outward appearance of the APO Televid 62 is just about identical to the 77mm model, with a mixture of silver-grey body housing, armoured with black rubber around the rear handling area, complemented by a black slide-out lens-hood and black eyepiece.
One of the few criticisms of the 77mm scope was its weight; the body of the 62mm APO Televid is constructed of "metal- and fiberglass-reinforced plastic, which the manufacturer states is "shock-proof to 100G." This has reduced the weight of the scope to a very manageable 1,270g, including the zoom eyepiece. Compared with the bigger model, this is a true lightweight.
The body has a nice warm feel, even in cold weather, and yet is not too smooth. Overall construction exudes quality and gives the impression of longevity in use.
The body is nitrogen-filled and waterproof even when the eyepieces are not in place, but note that the eyepieces are not themselves waterproof except when fitted to the scope body.
The dual focus wheels are centrally set on the top of the rear body housing and can be easily accessed from left or right. The mechanism works well with the larger wheel moving quickly across the focus span and the smaller one making critical precision adjustments. In practice, unless subjects were at really different distances, I often found that the smaller, looser precision wheel was quite adequate for focus adjustment.
The tripod mount is secured under the rear third of the scope body, affording excellent balance. On a critical note, the sunshade only slides out 10mm and though the objective lens is inset into the body by a similar amount, there could be greater protection from rain and spray with a longer extension of the hood.
The protective cap for the objective end is made of rubber, but it only pushes onto the threaded interior of the body housing where four extrusions hold it in place. I found it tricky to remove with gloves, as the outer circumference of the cap is the same as the lens hood and the lens hood has to be pushed back onto the housing before the cap will fit. A very small point, but this could be better designed to make it more usable. Eyepieces are bayonet

A 16-48x zoom eyepiece was supplied with the test model. Our tester found its operation was "dreamily smooth."
mounted and while there was no locking device to keep the eyepiece in place, there was enough tension to suggest that it would not come loose inadvertently.
The zoom eyepiece has a large diameter eyecup and this in combination with the broad optical lens adds up to nice, easy-on-the-eye viewing and a high degree of comfort. I appreciated this in long dusk vigils when searching for Short-eared Owls and Hen Harriers.
The eyecup twists up for nonspectacle wearers and is firmly locked into the upper and lower positions. As the eyecup screws right down over the outer edge of the lens surround, it leaves a flat glass surface which can be cleaned in a jiffy. The lens cap is made of hard plastic and pushes onto the outer eyecup but is not fastened so could be easily misplaced and lost.
Optical performance
From the first time I looked through the murk on the Humber at some distant gulls, it was clear that this was a rather special scope and eyepiece combination.
Gulls and waders jumped out of the dismal background, defying the terrible light levels to

produce a cracking, razor-sharp image. Attempting to assess the optical qualities of the scope I kept coming up with the same adjectives, all of which add up to brilliant!
The images produced are superbly sharp and crisp with magical contrast, right across the field of view, even in the most hopeless of light situations. Excellent detail was maintained on my local Rough-legged Buzzard, right up to 30 minutes before absolute darkness which, given the supposedly restrictive 62mm objective, was amazing.
Sharpness was maintained while zooming through the range of the eyepiece with what appeared to be a minimal loss of light from 16x through to 48x. Depth of field was excellent and

The slide-out hood could be longer to give added protection to the objective lens from spray and dirt.
field of view also rated highly with the zoom set on 16x. This was lower than most zooms, but proved to be a boon in scanning my local estuary. Colour rendition appeared to be accurate and there were no obvious blemishes in the optical performance.
I measured the close focus distance at 3.5m ; this is an excellent feature for looking at insects and even very close birds.
Mechanical performance
The focus mechanism on the scope worked smoothly and precisely with no slack or dragging, and was well-positioned for single-finger adjustment. Wearing gloves, I found it more difficult to separate the two wheels and tended to stick with the smaller wheel in most situations.
Changing the magnification on the zoom eyepiece is by means of a knurled ring, which is well separated from the locking ring. The zoom operation on the eyepiece was just about the best on any scope I have come across, being dreamily smooth but with just enough resistance to make movements positive without causing any vibration to the mounted scope.
Accessories
There are photo and digital adaptors available; the latter connects the scope to Leica digital cameras "and other models with the same mount. A stay-on case is also available at an extra cost.

Overall verdict
With the exception of some easily-changed niggles, this is a truly excellent scope with optics that in reality go beyond razor-sharp and a degree of contrast that would almost bring a dead bird to life!
It is beautifully small and compact and vies for absolute top spot in the newly-revamped small scope range.
Alternatives to lugging a huge scope around all day no longer mean that you lose out on quality images...try one and be convinced!
