Frequently Asked Questions - P2 Hegel

What is the Hegel P2 phono preamplifier used for?
The Hegel P2 is a high-end phono preamplifier designed to amplify the low-level signal from a turntable to a line level suitable for a preamplifier or integrated amplifier. It supports both MM (Moving Magnet) and MC (Moving Coil) cartridges.
Does the Hegel P2 have balanced outputs?
Yes, the Hegel P2 features both RCA (single-ended) and XLR (balanced) outputs, allowing connectivity with balanced preamplifiers or integrated amplifiers for improved noise rejection.
How do I switch between MM and MC cartridge settings?
The front panel or rear switch allows you to select between MM and MC modes. For MC, you may also need to adjust the loading impedance via internal jumpers (refer to the manual).
What is the gain of the Hegel P2?
The gain is approximately 60 dB for both MM and MC modes, optimized for typical cartridge outputs. This provides a sufficient signal level for most preamplifiers.
Can I use the Hegel P2 with a subwoofer?
The P2 is a phono preamp, not a subwoofer crossover. It outputs a full-range line signal. You would need a preamplifier or processor with bass management to integrate a subwoofer.
What is the recommended cartridge impedance for the Hegel P2?
For MM cartridges, use 47 kΩ with 100-200 pF capacitance. For MC cartridges, the P2 offers selectable loading from 10 Ω to 1 kΩ via internal dip switches. Refer to your cartridge specifications.
Does the Hegel P2 have a subsonic filter?
Yes, it includes a subsonic filter (typically 20 Hz) to remove unwanted low-frequency rumble from the turntable, preventing it from causing distortion in downstream equipment.
How do I clean the Hegel P2?
Use a soft, dry cloth to dust the chassis. Avoid liquid cleaners or abrasive materials. Keep the unit away from moisture and extreme temperatures.
What is the warranty period for the Hegel P2?
Hegel typically provides a 2-year warranty for their products, covering manufacturing defects. Warranty terms may vary by region, so check with your local dealer.
Is the Hegel P2 compatible with all turntables?
The P2 works with any turntable that has standard RCA outputs (MM or MC). However, turntables with built-in phono preamps should bypass the P2, as it may cause overloading.

Connections

The Hegel music system is easy to connect and operate and requires no prior technical knowledge. However, to get the most out of the system's good sound and music quality, we've provided a brief description of the connections and use of each component in order to give you a total music experience.

We recommend keeping this user's guide for future reference.

The amplifier has two types of audio inputs: unbalanced audio signal with RCA plugs (phono plugs) and real balanced audio signal with XLR plugs (pin 2 is positive phase, pin 3 is negative phase and pin 1 is chassis earth).

Select balanced or unbalanced inputs with the control knob situated between the input connections. The knob points to the input being used.

Avoid switching input cables or selecting inputs with the control knob while the amplifier is on and the speakers are connected. A transient signal might then arise, which can damage the speakers. It will not harm the amplifier, of course, but to avoid overloading the speakers, the amplifier should be switched off when connecting and disconnected cables. After the amplifier is switched on, there's a delay of about 10–30 seconds for the signal to reach the speaker outputs.

The amplifier is protected against short-circuiting of the speaker terminals, but we still recommend turning off the amplifier when connecting and disconnecting signal and speaker cables.

We recommend using high-quality audio cables. Use balanced signal cables between the various system components if possible. This will minimize power and earth hum between components.

We advise against placing the CD Player directly upon the Power Amplifier.

The amplifier is switched on with the button in the middle of the front panel. A blue light indicates that it is on.

For technical specifications, see page 9.

P4/P2 Preamplifier

The preamplifier is designed to be used with a CD player, VCR, cassette player, radio tuner and similar sound source. If you've purchased a P4/P2 with an RIAA part, it can also be used with a record player.

The preamplifier has two types of audio inputs and outputs: unbalanced audio signal with RCA plugs (phono plugs) and real, balanced audio signal with XLR plugs (pin 2 is positive phase, pin 3 is negative phase and pin 1 is chassis earth).

We recommend using high-quality audio cables. Use balanced signal cables between the various system components if possible. This will minimize power and earth hum between components.

The preamplifier is switched on with the button on the front panel. A blue light indicates that it is on. To the right you have the volume control and to the left there's the channel selector with selections: Balanced, Video, CD, Tape, Tuner, Auxiliary.

For technical specifications, see page 9.

CDP4/CDP2 CD Player

We recommend connecting with balanced outputs for best results. The digital outputs are for connecting with digital recording equipment. For example, DAT player, mini-disc player or PC/MAC. The digital output can also be connected to an external digital-to-analogue converter.

The CD player has only two control knobs. The left knob has the following 3 functions: on/off, previous track and next track. The right knob has the following functions: open/close, stop and play. For technical specifications, see page 9.

Hegel Remote Control

The Hegel CDP4/CDP2 and P4/P2 come with the following remote control. Like other Hegel products, the number of buttons is kept to a minimum and they contain virtually the same functions that you find on the CDP4/CDP2 and P4/P2.

You can select input source directly or switch between them by paging up/down with the source button (only P4). The mute button dampens the P4/P2 output signals. Repeat and forward/rewind are additional functions for CDP4/CDP2. To repeat one track, pres the repeat button twice. "Repeat 1" appears in the CD-player display. To repeat the whole CD press repeat button once. "Repeat" will appear in the CD-player display. The remote control uses four, 1.5-volt LR03 AAA batteries.

USE/PLACEMENT

The HEGEL system should be placed on a flat, hard surface for proper cooling. The amplifier gets hot when turned on. This is normal and the amplifier plays best when it is hot. There must be space for air circulation above and below the amplifiers. The amplifiers must never be placed on a carpet or similar surface that obstructs air circulation through the components. Nor must it be covered while in use or placed in a narrow shelf or other confined space. The amplifier will automatically switch itself off if overheated.

CLEANING

The top cover is made of brushed and anodized aluminium, while the front panel is made of massive, varnished aluminium (milled). Fingerprints or stains on the front panel or top cover can be removed with a cloth moistened with warm water.

NOTE/WARNING

Hegel products must never be opened by anyone other than certified technicians. The devices contain electronic components that can cause electric shock. Work performed on Hegel products by unqualified persons can cause serious damage and personal injury. The products must not be exposed to rain or moisture.

WARRANTY

Hegel as warrants this product to the original consumer purchaser against any failure resulting from original manufacturing defects in workmanship or materials. The limited warranty is in effects for a period of two (2) years from the date of original purchase and is valid only if the original bill of sale is presented when service is requested. The limited warranty does not cover damage caused during shipment, by accident, misuse, including use for other than normal audio applications, neglects, unauthorised product modification, failure to follow the instructions outlined in the owner's manual, failure to perform routine maintenance, damage from unauthorised repairs or claims based upon misrepresentations of the warranty by the seller.

ENVIRONMENT

Damaged products can be delivered to Hegel as, who will provide environmental recycling of (all) the material.
