Frequently Asked Questions - KD-MS8X8G-2 Key Digital

How do I set up the KD-MS8x8G-2 for the first time?
Connect all HDMI sources and displays, audio outputs, and control cables while the unit is powered off. Then plug in the power supply and power on the unit. Use the Key Digital Management Software Pro (KDMS Pro) via USB to configure network settings and EDID.
Note: Always connect cables before applying power.
How can I control the matrix switch remotely?
You can control via the web UI by entering the unit's IP address (default 192.168.1.239) in a browser, or use the Key Digital App (iOS) or KDMS Pro software on a PC. Professional control systems can use RS-232 or TCP/IP with the open API.
Tip: For TCP/IP, use a raw socket connection on port 23.
What is the maximum supported video resolution?
The KD-MS8x8G-2 supports up to UHD/4K @ 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling at 18 Gbps bandwidth, including HDR10 and Dolby Vision. It also supports all SD, HD, and VESA resolutions up to 8096x2160p.
Can I route audio independently from video?
Yes. The unit allows independent routing of HDMI AV (video+embedded audio) and external audio (analog/optical). You can switch video to one display while sending different audio to a separate zone.
Command example: SPO01SA02 routes audio from input 2 to output 1 external audio.
How do I change the EDID handshake for an input?
Use KDMS Pro or the IR remote. In the software, go to EDID Settings and select one of the 15 internal presets for each input, or copy from an output's native EDID. Via IR, press R3, then [Input #], then the two-digit device select code from the EDID table in the manual.
What audio formats are supported on the optical outputs?
The optical outputs support PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS up to 5.1/6.1. For multi-channel PCM or HD audio (e.g., Dolby TrueHD), the optical output mutes. The analog outputs only support 2-channel PCM.
Note: The source must output the appropriate format.
How do I reset the unit to factory defaults?
Press and hold the Output 1 and Output 8 buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds. The front LEDs will scroll during boot-up, indicating a reset. All settings except IP information will be restored to defaults.
Can I use the USB port for control?
Yes. The micro USB port can be used for configuration with KDMS Pro or as a virtual COM port (RS-232) at 115,200 baud. Install the Prolific USB-to-Serial driver, then connect via terminal software.
Tip: Use the same serial commands as for RS-232 control.
What is the Full Buffer System?
The Full Buffer System manages TMDS re-clocking and signal regeneration, handles HDCP authentication between sources and displays, and provides EDID control. This ensures reliable signal transmission over long HDMI cable runs using Key Digital cables.
Benefit: Improved signal integrity and compatibility.
How do I update the firmware?
Firmware updates are performed via the USB port using KDMS Pro software. Consult Key Digital technical support before updating, as all customized settings (except IP) will be reset. Download the latest firmware from www.keydigital.com and follow the instructions in the software.
