Frequently Asked Questions - LMC-5 LUXMAN

How do I install the Luxman LMC-5 cartridge?
Attach the cartridge to the headshell using the two supplied screws. Align the stylus with the tonearm's overhang and azimuth specifications. Set the tracking force to 2.0 g and adjust anti-skate accordingly.
What is the recommended tracking force for the LMC-5?
The recommended tracking force is 2.0 g. Use a precise stylus force gauge to set it within ±0.1 g for optimal performance.
How do I clean the stylus?
Use a soft carbon-fiber brush or a specialized stylus cleaner. Gently brush from back to front. Do not use liquids or solvents as they may damage the suspension.
What load impedance should my phono preamp have?
The LMC-5 requires a load impedance of at least 100 ohms. Many preamps offer adjustable loading; set it between 100–470 ohms for best frequency response.
Is the LMC-5 compatible with all tonearms?
The LMC-5 has a standard half-inch mount and weighs 12 g, making it compatible with most tonearms that can support the weight and tracking force. Ensure the effective mass of the tonearm is appropriate for the cartridge's compliance.
What is the output voltage and do I need a step-up transformer?
The output is 0.3 mV, which is typical for moving coil cartridges. Most MC phono stages can handle this, but if your preamp has low gain, a step-up transformer may be beneficial.
How often should I replace the stylus?
The stylus is designed for approximately 1000 hours of playing time. Have it inspected periodically for wear. Replacement or retipping is recommended after that period.
Can I use the LMC-5 with a 78 RPM record?
No, the LMC-5 is designed for standard LP records (33⅓ and 45 RPM). Using it on 78 RPM may cause excessive wear. A dedicated 78 RPM stylus is required.
What is the warranty on the Luxman LMC-5?
Luxman typically offers a 2-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Check with your local dealer for exact terms.
How do I store the LMC-5 when not in use?
Always replace the stylus guard. Store the turntable in a dust-free environment, away from heat and strong magnetic fields. If not used for a long time, loosen the tracking force spring.

This product and the accessories packed together constitute the applicable product according to the WEEE directive except batteries.

Precautions

- The stylus tip of this product is remarkably sensitive. A drop of this product or an application of a force to the needle by your finger may cause a critical damage to it. Therefore, pay extra attention to handling this product.

- This product is equipped with an extremely strong magnet. If a screwdriver or a pair of tweezers are carelessly brought to this product at mounting it on a shell or other situations, those tools are attracted to the magnet and the stylus tip may be damaged.

- Be sure to put the supplied stylus protection cover at operation.

- When this product is moved, transported, or stored for a long period of time, be sure to put the supplied stylus protection cover on it.

- Dust on the stylus tip and a analog disc causes not only the sound quality to deteriorate but also the stylus tip and disc to be damaged. Remove the dust on the stylus tip with a soft brush or the like in the direction from the base of the cantilever to the stylus tip in a gentle manner. Remove the dust and dirt on a analog disc with the use of a high-grade record cleaner (alcohol-free, solvent-free type), too.

How to Use

  1. Mount this product on a head shell or a shell-integrated tone arm.

Shell mounting screws Washer LMC-5

- Conduct operation with the stylus protection cover put not to damage the stylus tip.

- Use the supplied hex wrench and screws for mounting this product.

* The washer is not a necessary item. Use the washer to prevent the surface of the shell from being damaged.

- Select the appropriate screws from the supplied three types (5/8/10 mm) in accordance with the thickness of the shell on which this product is mounted.

- Tighten the mounting screws temporarily.

2. Connect the lead wires to the output terminals.

Red (R⊕) Green (R⊖) White (L⊕) Blue (L⊖)

  • Refer to the terminal diagram and conduct connections by paying attention to the direction of right and left (L/R) and the polarity of plus and minus (+/-).
  • Do not apply heat to this product directly, for example, do not solder lead wires to the output terminals. Failure to observe this may cause internal disconnection or malfunction.

3. Remove the stylus protection cover.

- When removing the cover, pull it slowly and lightly in the direction perpendicular to this product while paying attention to the stylus tip.

How to Use

4. Secure this product while adjusting the state of overhanding.

  • The state of overhanging is adjusted in accordance with the instruction manual of the analog player or tone arm to be used.
  • Conduct final tightening of the mounting screws but be careful not to tighten the screws too strongly.

5. Adjust the needle pressure.

  • The needle pressure is adjusted in accordance with the instruction manual of the analog player or tone arm to be used.
  • The sound quality varies with the needle pressure. The recommended standard needle pressure is 2.2 g.
  • The appropriate needle pressure of this product is between 2.1 and 2.3g .
  • Excessive needle pressure may cause the sound quality to deteriorate and the stylus tip and analog disc to be damaged. Therefore, be careful when handling this product.

6. Adjustment of tone arm height

  • The tone arm height is adjusted in accordance with the instruction manual of the analog player or tone arm to be used.
  • The sound quality varies with the tone arm height. Adjust the tone arm height so that the mounting face of the head shell where this product is mounted is parallel with the analog disc or the tip of the head shell is lower. If the height is inappropriate, the sound quality may deteriorate or this product may contact with the analog disc and accordingly damage the analog disc. Therefore, be careful when handling this product.

7. Set the cartridge selector of the amplifier to the MC position, which is connected to the analog player.

- This product is an MC type phono cartridge. For connection, an amplifier, a step-up transformer, or single phono equalizer amplifier that is compatible with the MC cartridge type is required.
