Frequently Asked Questions - WAF-ST6 CUISINART

How do I clean the waffle maker?
Unplug and let cool completely. Brush off crumbs and wipe grids with a damp cloth. Never immerse the unit in water or use abrasive cleaners. The exterior can be wiped with a soft, dry cloth.
What is the best browning setting for golden waffles?
Setting #3 is recommended for golden-brown waffles. Settings range from 1 (lightest) to 5 (darkest). Adjust according to preference.
Can I use metal utensils on the nonstick plates?
No, never use metal utensils as they will damage the nonstick coating. Use heatproof plastic or wooden spatulas.
Why does the waffle maker smoke when first used?
A slight odor and smoke during the first use is normal due to the nonstick coating. It will dissipate after a few uses. Brushing the plates with vegetable oil before first use helps.
How much batter should I use for each batch?
Use about 3/4 cup (180 ml) of batter to fill the entire lower grid. Thicker batters may require a full cup. Spread evenly within 1/2 inch of the edge.
Can I freeze the waffle sticks?
Yes, allow waffles to cool completely, then place in a plastic food storage bag with waxed paper between layers. Reheat in a toaster or toaster oven.
What does the green indicator light mean?
The green light turns on when the waffle maker is preheated and ready to bake. It also turns on again when the waffles are cooked and ready to eat.
Is the cord replaceable?
The cord is not user-serviceable. If damaged, the unit must be returned to an authorized Cuisinart service facility for repair or replacement.
Can I use the waffle maker without closing the lid?
No, the appliance must be operated only in the closed position for safety and proper baking.
What is the warranty period?

  16. Do not operate your appliance in an appliance garage or under a wall cabinet. When storing in an appliance garage, always unplug the unit from the electrical outlet. Not doing so could create a risk of fire, especially if the appliance touches the walls of the garage or the door touches the unit as it closes.
  17. This appliance must be operated only in the closed position.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

A short power-supply cord is provided to reduce the risks resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord. Extension cords may be used if care is exercised in their use. If an extension cord is used, the marked electrical rating of the extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance, and the longer cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children or animals or tripped over.

BEFORE FIRST USE

Remove all packing and any promotional labels or stickers from your waffle maker. Be sure that all parts (listed in Part and Features) of your new waffle maker have been included before discarding any packing materials. You may want to keep the box and packing materials for use at a later date.

Before using your Cuisinart® Waffle Stick Maker for the first time, remove any dust from shipping by wiping the plates with a damp cloth.

NOTE: The waffle plates have been treated with a special nonstick coating. The first time you use your waffle maker, it may have a slight odor and may smoke a bit. This is normal and common to appliances with a nonstick surface.

To maintain the nonstick coating, it is recommended to brush grids with vegetable oil before making waffles.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place the closed waffle maker on a clean, flat surface where you intend to bake.
  2. Plug the power cord in a standard electrical outlet.
  3. Turn the control dial to the desired browning setting. Setting #1 is for the lightest color waffles and setting #5 is for the darkest color waffles. We recommend using setting #3 for golden-brown waffles.

The red indicator light will turn on to signal power. Allow the waffle maker to preheat. When the waffle maker has reached desired temperature, the green indicator light will turn on. You are now ready to begin baking.

NOTE: The first time you use your waffle maker, it may have a slight odor. This is normal, and common to appliances with a nonstick surface.

  1. Lift lid of waffle maker by grasping the handle, pushing in the button, and lifting up in one motion. Lid will stay open until you lower it.
  2. Pour batter across the lower waffle grid. Use a heatproof spatula to spread batter evenly over the grid. Close the lid. The waffle maker will automatically latch shut when you lower the lid. The green light will turn off but the red light will stay illuminated.
  3. Baking time is determined by the browning level that you chose in Step 3. It may take up to 4 minutes to bake your waffle on setting #5.
  4. When the waffle sticks are ready to eat, the green light will turn on. Remove waffle sticks by gently loosening the edges with a heatproof plastic spatula or wooden spatula. Never use metal utensils, as they will damage the nonstick coating.
  5. When you are finished baking, allow the waffle maker to cool down completely before handling.

CLEANING, CARE, AND MAINTENANCE

Once you have finished baking, remove plug from electrical outlet. Leave top lid open and allow grids to cool down completely before cleaning.

Brush crumbs from grooves, and absorb any excess cooking oil by wiping with a dry cloth or paper towel. You may clean the grids by wiping with a damp cloth to prevent staining and sticking from batter or oil buildup. Never take your waffle maker apart for cleaning.

To clean exterior, wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Never use an abrasive cleanser or harsh pad. NEVER IMMERSE CORD, PLUG, OR UNIT IN WATER OR OTHER LIQUIDS.

Any other servicing should be provided by an authorized service representative.

TIPS FOR MAKING PERFECT WAFFLES

For best results, we recommend using 34 cup batter to fill the entire lower grid. (Thicker batters may require a cup to fill the lower grid).

We recommend settings 3 or 4 for most recipes including homemade and store bought mixes.

If you prefer crisper, darker waffles, increase the browning control. For lighter waffles, decrease the browning control.

For evenly filled waffles, pour the batter into the center of the lower grid and spread out evenly to the edges. The entire lower grid should be filled.

Waffles are best when made to order, but baked waffles may be kept warm in a 200^ F oven. Place them on a baking sheet, or on an oven-safe rack set in the baking pan, and be sure not to stack or overlap the waffles. Stacking or covering will create condensation and cause the waffles to get soggy.

Baked waffles may be frozen. Allow to cool completely, then place in a plastic food storage bag. Use waxed paper to keep waffles separated. Reheat in a Cuisinart® toaster or toaster oven when ready to use.

Jazz up your favorite plain waffle batter by adding fresh or thawed berries, finely diced fruits (such as apples, pears, or peaches cut into 18 -inch dice), finely chopped nuts, or 1 mashed banana.

Cinnamon Sugar Churro Waffle Sticks

In this recipe, pâte à choux—the dough used for cream puffs and eclairs—is piped into the waffle stick maker to create a light and airy churro-inspired dessert.

Makes 18 waffle sticks

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1 cup plus 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, divided

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter

12 cup whole milk

12 cup water

12 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour

3 large eggs

Warm chocolate sauce, for serving

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cinnamon and 1 cup of the sugar. Reserve.

  2. Put the butter, milk, water, vanilla, and remaining tablespoon of sugar into a medium saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Add the flour and continuously mix until a dough forms, about 30 seconds. Transfer to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix the dough on a medium speed until it stops steaming, about 2 minutes.

  3. While continuing to mix, add the eggs, one at a time, making sure the egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. Once all the eggs are fully incorporated, the dough should be smooth, glossy, and somewhat elastic. Transfer the dough to a pastry bag.

  4. Preheat your waffle maker on setting 4. The waffle maker's ready light will illuminate green to indicate it is ready to use. Pipe about 1 cup of the batter onto the center of lower grid; spread the batter using a heatproof spatula to within 12 inch of the edge of the grid. Close the waffle iron lid, making sure not to lock the unit. The green indicator light will turn off. When the green indicator light turns on again, the waffle sticks are ready. Open lid and carefully remove the waffle sticks. Break apart into individual sticks and toss in the cinnamon

sugar. Serve immediately with warm chocolate sauce.

  1. Repeat with the remaining batter.

These waffle sticks are an easy and tasty addition to weekend brunch.

Makes 18 waffle sticks

3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar

1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour

1 12 teaspoons baking powder

14 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

14 teaspoon fine sea salt

^3/_4 cup whole milk

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 large egg

12 tablespoon molasses

14 cup cooked crumbled bacon

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, crumble the brown sugar to remove any lumps, and then add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add the milk, oil, egg, and molasses; stir until blended and smooth. Fold in the bacon. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes.

  2. Preheat the waffle maker to the desired setting (a medium shade is recommended). The waffle maker's ready light will illuminate green to indicate it is ready to use.

  3. Pour about 1 cup batter onto the center of the lower grid; spread the batter using a heatproof spatula to within 12 inch of the edge of the grid. Close the waffle iron lid; the green indicator light will turn off. When the green indicator light turns on again, the waffle sticks are ready. Open the lid and carefully remove the waffle sticks.

  4. Repeat with the remaining batter. For best results, serve immediately. Break apart into individual waffle sticks and serve hot.
