Frequently Asked Questions - WAC12001W Koldfront

What does the LCDI safety plug do and how do I test it?
The LCDI (Leakage-Current Detection and Interruption) plug reduces fire risk from arcing faults in the power cord. To test: plug into grounded outlet, press TEST button — it should trip and cut power. If it doesn't trip, do not use the unit and contact support. Press RESET to resume operation.
How do I clean the air filter?
Check the filter monthly. Remove the front panel, grasp the filter, pull up and out. Wash with warm water and mild dish soap, rinse, shake off excess, and dry thoroughly before reinstalling. You may also vacuum it. Never use water over 104°F (40°C) and never operate the unit without the filter.
What should I do if the unit displays error codes AS, ES, or HS?
Error codes indicate sensor failures: AS = room temperature sensor error, ES = evaporator temperature sensor error, HS = electric heating sensor error. Unplug the unit, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in. If the error persists, contact customer service for repair.
Why does my air conditioner turn on and off rapidly?
Rapid cycling can be due to a dirty air filter or extremely hot outdoor temperatures. Clean the filter first. If the issue continues, set the fan to a higher speed to improve airflow over the coils. If still problematic, check for proper installation or consult troubleshooting.
Can I use an extension cord with this air conditioner?
No. Do not use an extension cord or adapter plug with this unit. Plug it directly into a grounded 3-prong outlet that meets the voltage and amperage requirements specified on the rating label.
How do I install the unit in a window?
First, remove the air conditioner from the cabinet. Attach the top channel and side curtains to the cabinet. Install the empty cabinet into the window, ensuring it is centered and tilted slightly downward (about 3-4°) to the outside for drainage. Secure with screws (wooden or vinyl window specific). Extend side curtains against the frame and lock them. Insert the sash seal and window lock bracket. Finally, slide the air conditioner back into the cabinet, attach the front panel, and plug in.
What is the difference between Cool mode and Dry mode?
Cool mode lowers the room temperature by running the compressor and fan, with adjustable fan speed. Dry mode operates as a dehumidifier with the fan automatically set to low; some cooling occurs but the primary function is moisture removal. Use Dry mode when humidity is high but cooling is not the main need.
How do I set the timer for auto start/stop?
Press the Timer button when the unit is on or off. The Timer On or Timer Off indicator will light. Use the Up/Down buttons to set the delay in 1-hour increments up to 24 hours (or 12-hour increments up to 10 hours). The setting registers after 5 seconds. The unit will start or stop at the programmed time.
Why does the unit make a gurgling or hissing sound?
Gurgling or hissing noises are normal and caused by refrigerant flowing through the evaporator during operation. Other normal sounds include high-pitched chatter from the compressor, rushing air from the fan, and pinging from water droplets hitting the condenser.
What maintenance does the unit require?
Clean the air filter every month or after 250 hours of use. Clean the cabinet with a damp cloth and mild detergent; avoid harsh cleaners. Before winter storage, remove the unit from the window, clean it thoroughly, and cover it. Always unplug the unit before cleaning.

Maintenance

Clean the air conditioner and filters regularly to maximize performance and efficiency, and prolong the unit's life. Be sure to always unplug the air conditioner from the power outlet before cleaning.

Air Filter Cleaning

NOTE: Winter Storage-If you plan to store the air conditioner during the winter, remove it carefully from the window according to the installation instructions. Make sure to clean the unit thoroughly and cover it with plastic or return it to the original carton.

The air filter should be checked at least once a month to see if cleaning is necessary. Trapped particles in the filter can build up and could cause an accumulation of frost on the cooling coils.

  1. Push the vent handle to the "vent closed" position.
  2. Open the front panel.
  3. Grasp the filter, pull up and out.
  4. Wash the filter using liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Rinse filter thoroughly.
  5. Gently shake excess water from the filter. Be sure the filter is thoroughly dry before replacing.
  6. You also have the option of cleaning filter with vacuum.

Warning: Never use hot water over 40^ C ( 104^ F) to clean the air filter. Never attempt to operate the unit without the air filter.

Air Filter Front Panel

Cabinet Cleaning

  • Be sure to unplug the air conditioner to prevent shock or fire hazard. The cabinet and front may be dusted with an oil-free cloth or washed with a cloth dampened in a solution of warm water and mild dishwashing detergent. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry.
  • Never use harsh cleaners, wax, or polish on the cabinet front.
  • Be sure to wring excess water from the cloth before wiping around the controls. Excess water in or around the controls may cause damage to the air conditioner.

Normal Sounds

  • High Pitched Chatter- High efficiency compressors may have a high pitched chatter during the cooling cycle.
  • Sound of Rushing Air- At the front of the unit, you may hear the sound of rushing air being moved by the fan.
  • Gurgle/Hiss- Gurgling or Hissing noise may be heard due to refrigerant passing through evaporator during normal operation.
  • Vibration- Unit may vibrate and make noise because of poor wall or window construction or incorrect installation.
  • Pinging or Switching- Droplets of water hitting condenser during normal operation may cause these sounds.

Energy Saving Guide

Read and follow the guide below to get the best performance and efficiency from your window air conditioner:

  • Do not cover the air outlet (exhaust) while in use.
  • Use the timer to operate the unit before it is needed. For example, set the timer to turn on the unit in cooling mode for 3 or more hours to cool the room before you arrive. You may want to operate the unit all day if you live in a warmer climate.
  • Minimize the heat sources (direct sunlight, computers, servers, people, etc.) in the room.
  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Use the unit in a contained room. For example, a room with four walls and a ceiling, instead of a partitioned studio, or warehouse.
  • Make sure the unit is secure with no gaps where air can escape.
  • Minimize the amount of humidity in the room. For example, run the unit as a dehumidifier.
  • To prolong the compressor's life, please wait at least 3 minutes before turning the unit back on after shutting it off.
  • Inspect and keep the air filters clean by cleaning regularly.
  • Perform routine maintenance.
