Frequently Asked Questions - LOC90 Scosche

What is a line output converter (LOC) and what does the Scosche LOC90 do?
A line output converter converts high-level speaker outputs from a factory stereo into low-level RCA outputs for aftermarket amplifiers. The LOC90 specifically provides adjustable gain and ground isolation to prevent alternator whine.
How do I install the Scosche LOC90?
Connect the speaker-level inputs from your factory stereo to the LOC90 using the included harness. Then connect the RCA outputs to your amplifier. Power the LOC90 with 12V DC (e.g., from the amplifier remote turn-on) and ground the black wire. Adjust the gain using the small screwdriver.
Can the LOC90 be used with any factory radio?
Yes, it works with most factory stereos that have speaker output wires. However, ensure your radio outputs are not bridged or distorted. The LOC90 can handle up to 50 watts per channel input.
Does the LOC90 require a separate power supply?
It needs a 12V DC power source, typically from the remote turn-on wire of your amplifier or an accessory wire. The current draw is low (500mA), so a standard remote wire works fine.
How do I adjust the gain on the LOC90?
Use a small flathead screwdriver to turn the gain pot. Start with the gain fully counterclockwise (minimum), then play a moderately loud track on your stereo and slowly turn clockwise until you hear distortion, then back off slightly. This matches the output level to your amplifier's input sensitivity.
What is the purpose of the ground isolation feature?
Ground isolation eliminates alternator whine and other ground loop noise by electrically isolating the input from the output grounds. This is common when connecting aftermarket equipment to factory wiring.
How do I troubleshoot no sound from the LOC90?
Check all connections: speaker inputs, RCA outputs, power (12V), and ground. Ensure the gain is not turned completely down. Test with a known working amplifier. The LED indicator should be lit; if not, verify power.
Is the Scosche LOC90 compatible with high-powered factory systems?
It can handle up to 50 watts RMS per channel. If your factory system outputs more than that, consider using a step-down resistor or a different LOC designed for higher power.
Can I use the LOC90 with a 4-channel amplifier?
Yes, you can daisy-chain two LOC90 units (one for front channels, one for rear) or use the summed outputs if your amplifier accepts 2-channel input. The LOC90 outputs two channels (left/right).
How do I clean and maintain the LOC90?
Disconnect power before cleaning. Wipe with a dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid moisture and solvents. Periodically check connections for corrosion. The LOC90 is solid-state and requires no internal maintenance.

WIRING INSTRUCTIONS

TIPS: For easier installation, connections can be made at the rear speakers in many vehicles without the need to remove the stereo! The LOC90 adapter module will output a +12V remote output on the Blue/White wire when signal is detected from the car stereo's speaker wires. Wire colors on the LOC90 may differ from the wiring codes found on your car stereo/vehicle.

  1. Connect the black wire to chassis ground (vehicle metal).
  2. Connect the yellow wire to a +12V constant (continuous) power source. TIP: If amplifier is installed nearby, tap the yellow wire from the LOC90 into the amplifier's +12V battery terminal or wire.
  3. Connect the left speaker's +/- input wires to the white and white black input wires of the LOC90. This can be performed at the vehicle's speaker location or behind the stereo itself.
  4. Connect the right speaker's +/- input wires to the gray and gray/black input wires of the LOC90. This can be performed at the vehicle's speaker location or behind the stereo itself.
  5. Connect the blue/white wire to the amplifier's "remote turn-on" or "REM" input. Always refer to your amplifier's owner's manual for wiring details/functions of your particular amplifier (remote output: 500mA).
  6. Connect the RCA audio outputs of the LOC90 to the amplifier's inputs (RED = right channel, WHITE = left channel)

NOTE: Some mono (monaural) sub amplifiers may have only a single RCA input. You can choose either the left or right signal from the LOC90, but it is advisable to use a y-adapter to combine together for maximum signal level.

REMOTE SUB/VOLUME CONTROL

The LOC90 includes on optional remote-mount volume control to attenuate/control the new AMP/SUB system level. Choose a location accessible to the driver, passenger or both. See Figure 1 on page 6 for suggested locations.

TIP: Check for obstructions at the chosen location before mounting/routing the volume control.

Recommended: Use the included adhesive strip for non-permanent mounting. Optional: For permanent mounting, use (2) small 14 " screws (not included).

REMOTE SUB/VOLUME CONTROL

FIGURE 1 ADHESIVE STRIP

  1. Choose the desired location for the remote volume control (Figure 1).
  2. Route the control cable from the selected location to the LOC90 main unit.
  3. Plug the male 3.5mm control wire into the female 3.5mm input of the LOC90 module.
  4. Peel the backing strip from one side of the adhesive and attach to the remote volume control case. When ready to mount, peel away the remaining strip and press the unit to the mounting surface.
Optional: For additional support use 2 small screws (screws not included).

The LOC90 can output up to 4 volts, a slight adjustment can change the volume dramatically. The adjustment pots rotate one complete turn, do not over-turn or use too much pressure.

Adjust gains with caution. Too much volume or distortion can damage your hearing and the audio equipment.

  1. Carefully break away the screwdriver tool from the side of the LOC90 case (Figure 2).

  2. If using the remote volume control, ensure that it is connected to the main unit with its knob turned all the UP (Figure 3).

  3. Use the included tool at the LOC90 module and turn both gain controls all the way down (counterclockwise until they stop - Figure 4).

  4. Turn stereo on and adjust volume up to 34 (or just above loudest listening level)

  5. Carefully turn up the left and right gain controls (turn clockwise) on the LOC90 until the sound is as loud as will ever need to be or near distortion (when sound becomes garbled, unclear, or breaks up).

  6. Turn back each gain level very slightly from step #5 and then immediately turn down stereo volume.

  7. If you hear a "hum" or excessive "hiss" sound between songs then the gain levels may still be adjusted too high.
