What refrigerant does the Carson PA340 use?

The Carson PA340 uses R-290 (propane) as refrigerant. It is flammable and heavier than air. The unit must be installed in rooms with a minimum area of 13 m² and away from ignition sources.

How do I clean the air filter?

Clean the air filter every two weeks. Remove the filter mesh, use a vacuum to remove dust, then rinse under running water in the opposite direction of airflow. Let it air dry completely before reinstalling. Do not operate the unit without the filter.

What is the cooling capacity and recommended room size?

The cooling capacity is 4.7 kW (16000 BTU/h), suitable for rooms of 28-35 m². The unit also provides heating with a capacity of 3.3 kW (11200 BTU/h).

Can I use an extension cord?

No, do not use an extension cord or adapter plug. Plug the unit directly into a grounded power outlet matching the voltage and frequency on the product label (240V/50Hz).

How does the auto defrost function work?

In cooling or dry mode, if the evaporator coil temperature drops below -1°C, the compressor stops for 10 minutes or until the coil reaches 7°C. In heating mode, defrost starts after 20 minutes if conditions are met. The power LED blinks during defrost.

What should I do if the water tank is full?

The unit will stop and display error code Ft. Manual drainage: unplug, place a container below the side water outlet, remove the plug, and drain. For continuous operation, connect a drain hose for gravity drainage, ensuring it is not kinked and slopes downward more than 20°.

Can I use the heating function?

Yes, if your unit is equipped with heating (optional). Press MODE to select heating. The drain hose must be connected for continuous operation. The temperature can be set higher than room temperature.

What are the safety precautions for R-290 refrigerant?

R-290 is flammable. No ignition sources, smoking, or open flames near the unit. If a leak is suspected, evacuate the area, ventilate, and contact the fire department. Only qualified technicians should service the refrigerant loop.

How do I set the timer?

Press the TIMER key. Use ADD/MINUS to set the delay time (1-24 hours). When the unit is on, this sets an auto-off time. When off, it sets an auto-on time. The display shows the remaining time.

Why is the unit not cooling effectively?

Check if the air filter is dirty, the exhaust hose is attached and not blocked, the room doors/windows are closed, and the mode and temperature are set correctly. Also ensure the unit is on a level surface with at least 50 cm clearance around it.

General Fuel Safety

• Open the fuel cap carefully to allow any pressure build-up in the tank to release slowly.

Intended Use

Designated Refrigerant

• The unit is designed only for use with R-290 (propane) gas as the designated refrigerant.
• The refrigerant loop is sealed and should only be serviced by a qualified technician.
• Do not discharge the refrigerant into the atmosphere.

Propane Gas Safety

• R-290 (propane) is flammable and heavier than air. It collects first in low areas but can be circulated by the fans.
• If propane gas is present or even suspected, do not allow untrained personnel to attempt to find the cause.
• The propane gas used in the unit has no odour. The lack of smell does not indicate a lack of escaped gas.
• If a leak is detected, immediately evacuate all persons from the area, ventilate the room, and contact the local fire department to advise them of a propane leak.
• Do not allow anyone back into the room until a qualified service technician has arrived and confirmed it is safe to return.
• No open flames, cigarettes, or other possible sources of ignition should be used inside or near the units.
• Component parts are designed for propane and are non-incendiary and non-sparking. Only identical replacement parts should be used for repairs.
• FAILURE TO ABIDE BY THIS WARNING COULD RESULT IN AN EXPLOSION, DEATH, INJURY, AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.

Power Supply and Cord Safety

• If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified persons to avoid a hazard.
• The appliance must be disconnected from its power source during service.
  • Always operate the unit from a power source of equal voltage, frequency, and rating as indicated on the product identification plate.

This certificate authorises their competence to handle refrigerants safely in accordance with an industry-recognised assessment specification.

Safety Precautions on Servicing

• Please follow these warnings when servicing an appliance with R290.
• CHECKS TO THE AREA: Prior to beginning work on systems containing flammable refrigerants, safety checks are necessary to ensure that the risk of ignition is minimized. For repairs to the refrigerating system, the following precautions shall be complied with before conducting work on the system.
• WORK PROCEDURE: Work shall be undertaken under a controlled procedure to minimize the risk of a flammable gas or vapour being present while the work is being performed.
• GENERAL WORK AREA: All maintenance staff and others working in the local area shall be instructed on the nature of the work being carried out. Work in confined spaces shall be avoided. The area around the workspace shall be sectioned off. Ensure that the conditions within the area have been made safe by controlling flammable materials.
• CHECKING FOR PRESENCE OF REFRIGERANT: The area shall be checked with an appropriate refrigerant detector prior to and during work to ensure the technician is aware of potentially flammable atmospheres. Ensure that the leak detection equipment being used is suitable for use with flammable refrigerants, i.e. non-sparking, adequately sealed, or intrinsically safe.
• PRESENCE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER: If any hot work is to be conducted on the refrigeration equipment or any associated parts, appropriate fire extinguishing equipment shall be available. Have a dry powder or CO2 fire extinguisher adjacent to the charging area.

• NO IGNITION SOURCES: No person carrying out work on a refrigeration system that involves exposing any pipework containing or that has contained flammable refrigerant shall use any ignition sources that may lead to the risk of fire or explosion. All possible ignition sources, including cigarette smoking, should be kept sufficiently far away from the site of installation, repair, removal, and disposal, during which flammable refrigerant may be released into the surrounding space. Before work begins, the area around the equipment must be surveyed to ensure there are no flammable hazards or ignition risks. "No Smoking" signs shall be displayed.

• VENTILATED AREA: Ensure the area is open or adequately ventilated before breaking into the system or conducting any hot work. Ventilation should continue during the period that the work is carried out to safely disperse any released refrigerant and preferably expel it externally into the atmosphere.

• CHECKS TO THE REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT: When changing electrical components, they must be fit for purpose and to the correct specification. At all times, the manufacturer's maintenance and service guidelines shall be followed. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer's technical department for assistance.

• The following checks shall be applied to installations using flammable refrigerants:

• The charge size is in accordance with the room size within which the refrigerant-containing parts are installed.

• The ventilation machinery and outlets are operating adequately and are not obstructed.
• If an indirect refrigerating circuit is being used, the secondary circuit shall be checked for the presence of refrigerant.
• Marking on the equipment continues to be visible and legible. Illegible markings and signs shall be corrected.

• Refrigeration pipes or components are installed in positions where they are unlikely to be exposed to any substances that may corrode refrigerant-containing components, unless the components are constructed of materials inherently resistant to corrosion or are suitably protected against corrosion.

• CHECKS TO ELECTRICAL DEVICES: Repair and maintenance of electrical components shall include initial safety checks and component inspection procedures. If a fault exists that could compromise safety, no electrical supply shall be connected to the circuit until it is satisfactorily dealt with. If the fault cannot be corrected immediately but it is necessary to continue operation, an adequate temporary solution shall be used. This shall be reported to the owner of the equipment, so all parties are advised.

• Initial safety checks shall include:

• Ensuring capacitors are discharged safely to avoid the possibility of sparking.

• Ensuring no live electrical components and wiring are exposed while charging, recovering, or purging the system.

Do not operate the unit near walls, curtains, or other objects that may block the air inlet and outlet. Keep the air inlet and outlet free of obstacles.

- Avoid These Locations: Never install the unit where it could be subject to:

• Heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other products that produce heat.
• Direct sunlight.
• Mechanical vibration or shock.

• Excessive dust.
  – Lack of ventilation, such as in a cabinet or bookcase.
• Uneven surfaces.

WARNING! Install the unit in rooms with a minimum area of 13m^2 . Do not install the unit in places where inflammable gas may leak.

NOTE: The manufacturer may provide other suitable examples or additional information about the refrigerant odour.

Attaching the Exhaust Hose

The air conditioner requires venting outside so that the exhaust air, which contains waste heat and moisture, can escape the room.

Do not replace or extend the exhaust hose, as this will result in decreased efficiency and may even cause the unit to shut down due to low backpressure.

1. Connect the hose connector to one end of the exhaust hose.

1. Connect the window kit adapter to the other end of the exhaust hose.

NOTE: Extending the length of the included exhaust hose may result in reduced cooling performance. We do not recommend adding extra lengths of exhaust hose.

1. Extend the adjustable window kit to the length of your window. Connect the exhaust hose to the window kit.

1. Close your window to secure the kit in place. It needs to hold the window kit firmly in place. Secure the window kit with duct tape if required. It is recommended that the gap between the adapter and the sides of the window be sealed off for maximum efficiency.

1. Attach the hose connector to the exhaust air outlet of the unit.

Settings

Start-up and Shutdown

1. Press POWER to turn the unit on. The unit runs in FAN mode by default.
2. Press the MODE button to select the desired operation mode.
3. Press POWER again to turn off the unit.

Operation Mode

The unit has five operation modes: Cooling, Heating, Dry, Fan, Sleep

Cooling Your Room:

1. Select the cooling mode to lower the temperature in your room.
2. Press the MODE button repeatedly until the LED of COOL operation lights up.
3. Press the ADD/MINUS button to adjust the temperature displayed on the screen. The temperature can be set between 16°C and 32°C.
4. Press the SPEED button repeatedly until the desired fan speed indicator lights up.
5. To control the direction of the airflow, press the SWING button.

NOTE: The air conditioner stops if the room temperature is lower than the selected temperature.

Heating Your Room (Optional for Heating Function Unit Only):

1. Press the MODE button repeatedly until the LED of Heating operation lights up.
2. Press the ADD/MINUS button to set the temperature higher than the room temperature. The fan speed can also be set.

NOTE: The drainage hose should be attached to the unit for continuous operation.

Ventilating Your Room:

1. Press the MODE button repeatedly until the LED of FAN operation lights up. In fan mode, the room air is circulated but not cooled.
2. Press the SPEED button repeatedly to select the fan speed as desired.

Drying Your Room:

1. Press the MODE button on the control panel or remote control until the LED of DRY operation lights up. The fan speed cannot be selected.
2. Connect the hose to the drain outlet at the bottom of the unit.

NOTE: In this mode, the fan speed switches to low speed and the temperature cannot be selected.

Sleep Mode:

The sleep mode can be activated when in cooling mode and heating mode.

• In cooling mode:

• After 1 hour, the preset temperature is increased by 1^ . After another hour, the preset temperature is increased by another 1^ .
  – In heating mode (Optional for Heating Function Unit Only):
• After 1 hour, the preset temperature is decreased by 1^ . After another hour, the preset temperature is decreased by another 1^ .

The temperature is then kept constant for 10 hours. All the indicators dim to dark. The fan speed may switch to low speed for silent operation and cannot be selected.

Timer Setting (1 hour - 24 hours)

The timer has two ways of operation:

Press ADD/MINUS repeatedly until the LED shows '00'. Note: when press POWER will also exit the timer setting.

Automatic Defrost

At low room temperatures, frost may build up at the evaporator during operation. The unit will automatically start defrosting, indicated by the POWER LED blinking. The defrost control sequence is as follows:

• When the unit operates in cooling or drying operation, the ambient temperature sensor senses if the evaporator coil temperature is below -1°C. The compressor will stop operating for 10 minutes or until the coil temperature rises to 7°C, at which point the unit will restart in cooling mode.
• When the unit operates in heating or drying operation, if the coil temperature sensor senses the temperature of the evaporator is below 40^ C and the differential temperature between coil temperature and room temperature is below 19^ C after the compressor operates for 20 minutes, the unit will start defrosting for 5 minutes, indicated by the power indicator blinking.

Overload Protection

In the event of a power loss, to protect the compressor, there is a 3-minute delay before the compressor restarts.

Drainage

Manual Drainage

1. When the machine stops after the water tank is full, unplug the power plug.

NOTE: Move the machine carefully to avoid spilling the water in the water pan at the bottom of the unit.

1. Place a water container below the side water outlet behind the unit.

2. Unplug the water plug; the water will automatically flow into the water container.

NOTE: Keep the water plug properly. During drainage, the unit can be tilted slightly backwards. If the water container cannot hold all the water, plug the water outlet with the water plug before the container is full to prevent water from spilling onto the floor or carpet.

1. Once the water is discharged, plug the water outlet.

NOTE: Restart the machine only after the water plug and drainage cover are installed. Failure to do so may cause condensate water to flow onto the floor or carpet.

Continuous Drainage

The self-evaporating system uses the collected water to cool the condenser coils for better performance. It is not necessary to empty the drainage tank during cooling operation except in drying and heating operations and high humidity conditions. The condensate water evaporates at the condenser and is evacuated through the exhaust hose.

For continuous operation or unattended operation in drying and heating modes, please connect the attached drain hose to the unit. Condensate water can automatically flow into a bucket or drain by gravity.

Steps for Continuous Drainage:

1. Switch off the unit before operating.
2. Remove the plug from the water outlet opening and keep it in a safe area.
3. Securely and properly connect the drain hose, ensuring it is not kinked and is clear of obstructions.
4. Place the outlet of the hose over a drain or bucket and ensure that water can freely flow out of the unit.
5. Do not submerge the end of the hose into water, as this can cause an "air lock" in the hose.

To Avoid Water Spillage:

- Due to the large negative pressure of the condensate drain pan, tilt the drain hose downward towards the floor. The degree of inclination should exceed 20 degrees.

- Straighten the hose to avoid any traps that could restrict water flow.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Air Filter (Every Two Weeks)

Dust collects on the filter and restricts the airflow. The restricted airflow reduces the efficiency of the system, and if it becomes blocked, it can cause damage to the unit. The air filter requires regular cleaning and is removable for easy maintenance. Do not operate the unit without an air filter, as the evaporator may become contaminated.

Steps for Cleaning the Air Filter:

1. Press the Power button to switch off the unit and unplug the power cord.
2. Remove the filter mesh from the unit.
3. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck dust from the filter.
4. Turn the filter over and rinse it under running water. Let the water run through the filter in the opposite direction of airflow. Set aside and allow the filter to air dry completely before reinstalling it.

Switch off the unit and remove the air filters. Rinse the air filter under running water.

WARNING! Do not touch the evaporator surface with bare hands, as it could cause injury to your fingers.

Cleaning Up of Refrigerant

General Measures:

• Gas/vapour is heavier than air and may accumulate in confined spaces, particularly at or below ground level.
- Eliminate every possible source of ignition.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Evacuate unnecessary personnel, isolate, and ventilate the area.
- Do not get it in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not breathe vapours or gas.
• Prevent entry into sewers and public waters.
- Stop the source of the release if it is safe to do so. Consider using water spray to disperse vapours.
- Isolate the area until the gas has dispersed. Ventilate and test the gas levels before entering. Contact competent authorities after a spill.

Troubleshooting

Symptom		Inspection	Solution
The unit is not operating.		Check the power connection is secure.	Insert the power cord securely into the wall outlet.
		Check if the water level indicator lights up.	Empty the drain pan by removing the rubber plug.
		Check the room temperature.	The range of operating temperature is 5-35°C.

		The exhaust hose is detached.	Make sure the exhaust hose is securely attached.
Water Leakage		Overflow while moving the unit.	Empty the water tank before transport.
		Check if the drain hose is kinked or bends.	Straighten the hose to avoid a trap existing.
Excessive Noise		Check if the unit is securely positioned.	Place the unit on horizontal and firm ground.
		Check if there are any loose, vibrating parts.	Secure and tight the parts.
		Noise sounds like water flowing.	Noise comes from flowing refrigerant. This is normal.
Error Codes	E0	Communication faults between main PCB and display PCB.	Check the wire harness of the display PCB for damage.
	E1	Ambient temperature sensor failure	Check connection or replace it. To clean or replace the temperature sensor.
	E2	Coil temperature sensor failures.	Check connection or replace it. To clean or replace the temperature sensor.
	Ft	Condensate water high level alarm.	Empty the drain pan by removing the rubber plug.

Storage

Long-Term Storage:

If you will not be using the unit for an extended period (more than a few weeks), it is best to clean the unit and dry it out completely. Please store the unit per the following steps:

1. Unplug the unit and remove the exhaust hose and window kit. Store them with the unit.
2. Drain the remaining water from the unit.
3. Clean the filter and let it dry completely in a shaded area.
4. Collect the power cord at the water tank.
5. Reinstall the filter in its position.
6. The unit must be kept in an upright position when in storage.
7. Store the machine in a ventilated, dry, non-corrosive, and safe indoor place.

ATTENTION: The evaporator inside the machine must be dried out before the unit is packed to avoid component damage and mould. Unplug the unit and place it in a dry, open area for several days to dry it out.

WARNING! Releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere is strictly forbidden!

• Do not dispose of electrical appliances as unsorted municipal waste. Use separate collection facilities.
• Contact your local government for information regarding the collection systems available.
• If electrical appliances are disposed of in landfills or dumps, hazardous substances can leak into the groundwater and get into the food chain, damaging your health and well-being.
