How do I turn on the Rollei HS Freeze HI-48 flash?

Press and hold the on/off switch until the display lights up. The 'Click' symbol will appear; tap the screen to access the menu.

What flash modes are available on this unit?

The flash supports Manual (M) and TTL modes. In master mode, you can also set groups to TTL, M, or off. Slave mode offers TTL, M, and TTL-ALL.

How do I change the camera brand setting?

Go to the settings menu by pressing the settings button, use arrow buttons to navigate to 'Camera', then swipe up/down to select your camera brand (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Lumix).

How long does the battery take to charge?

The lithium-ion battery charges in approximately 100 minutes using the supplied charger. All four LEDs glow green when fully charged.

Can I use the flash wirelessly?

Yes, it has built-in 2.4 GHz wireless. It can act as a master controlling up to 6 groups (A-F) on channels 1-31, or as a slave receiving signals from a compatible master.

What is the maximum burst rate?

The flash supports burst mode up to 20 frames per second at lower power levels. Higher power reduces the burst rate.

How do I activate Freeze mode?

In speedlite mode, swipe to the sync setting and select Freeze. This gives ultra-short flash durations (1/2,500 to 1/30,000 s) to freeze fast motion.

What should I do if the flash overheats?

The flash has automatic overheating protection that extends recycling time. If this happens, let it cool down by reducing flash frequency or turning it off for a few minutes.

How do I update the firmware?

Download the firmware file from Rollei's website to your computer. Connect the flash via USB-C and copy the file into the flash's drive (drag and drop).

Is the flash compatible with all cameras?

It comes in two versions: Universal (for Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus, Sony via adapter) and Sony-specific. Check your camera's hot shoe compatibility.

This unit is designed for use as photo and video lighting only. It must not be used for other purposes and in particular not for domestic room lighting.

• Only use the product with the supplied rechargeable battery.
• Before disconnecting the power or battery, turn off the unit at the main switch.
• Do not store or use the flash in places where it is exposed to strong electromagnetic fields or dust. Keep the unit away from other sources of interference.
• Switch off the flash and disconnect it from the power supply (battery) when changing the flash tube.

Caution!

• Never use the mains cable as a carrying handle.
• Keep the product and accessories away from naked flames, hot surfaces and easily flammable materials.
• Lay the power cord in such a way that it does not present a tripping hazard.
• Do not bend the power cord or lay it over sharp edges.

Warnings and Safety Instructions

• The product is not a toy. Keep the product, accessories and packaging materials away from children and pets to prevent accidents and suffocation.
• Do not discharge the flash at a very close distance to objects, people or animals. Keep a minimum distance of approximately two metres. The flash releases intense heat and may cause serious injury or damage.
• For photographic lighting purposes only. Not suitable for permanent room lighting.
• Do not film car, bus, bicycle, motorbike or train drivers while driving this product. The driver may be dazzled and cause an accident. This also applies to unlisted persons or groups if possible glare could cause an accident.
• Do not shine directly into the eyes of people or animals as this may cause damage to the retina, visual disturbances and even blindness.
• Ensure adequate ventilation during operation. Never cover the ventilation slits of the unit.
• Do not use or store the unit in high temperatures or in closed rooms exposed to direct sunlight, and do not charge the battery while doing so. The product should not be used in ambient temperatures above 40°C.
• Note that the flash tube, modelling light and a connected reflector can become very hot during operation. Do not touch these parts during or immediately after operation. Allow the unit components to cool down before replacing the flash tube or reflector.
• Handle glass parts such as the flash tube with care so that the glass is not broken. Do not touch the flash tube with bare hands, use clean cotton gloves or a microfibre cloth. Small residues of skin grease can cause the flash tube to burst.
• Make sure that the flash tilt lever is firmly tightened before using the unit and connecting accessories to it.
• Mount the flash unit on a tripod with sufficient load-bearing capacity and set up the tripod so that it cannot tip over or slip.
• For storage or transport, disconnect the battery from the flash unit.
• Allow the flash to cool down before packing it for transport or storage.

Warnings for Rechargeable Batteries

• Do not dismantle, hit or puncture the battery, take care not to short-circuit the battery.
• Do not expose the battery to high temperatures.
• Do not continue to use the battery if it leaks or expands.
• Always charge through the system. If the battery is replaced with the wrong type, there is a risk of explosion.
• Keep the battery away from children and animals.
• Batteries can explode if exposed to an open fire. Never throw batteries into a fire.
  – Dispose of used batteries according to local regulations.
• Before disposing of the unit, remove the battery and dispose of it separately.
• Batteries must be fully charged before using the unit for the first time.
• Do not open or damage the battery, short-circuit it, bypass it or use it for any other purpose.
• Keep the battery away from children, naked flames and liquids and do not expose it to temperatures exceeding 50°C. In addition, follow the battery care instructions on page 26 of this manual.
• To charge the battery, disconnect it from the flash. Only use the charger supplied to charge the battery. To charge the battery, first connect the charger to the battery to be charged and then to the mains power supply.

Switching on/off

• Press and hold the on/off switch to switch on the flash. As soon as the symbol with the signature „Click“ appears on the display, press the screen to access the menu.
• Click on the left or right arrow button to switch between master mode, slave mode and speedlite mode and make settings.

Settings

• Click on the settings button to access the settings menu.
• Click on the arrow buttons to switch between the individual setting parameters (camera, backlight, sleep timer, sync mode, auto focus, freeze mode, language, key tone settings and reset). Swipe up and down on the setting parameter you want to adjust to make specific settings for the selection as indicated in the table on the next page.
• Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.

Group parameter settings

(the host is set to group A by default)

• Click on the red marked position [a] and swipe your finger up and down on the display to change the group;
• Click on the position [b] to set the current group flash mode by tapping or swiping across the screen (M manual / TLL exposure compensation / SLP off);
• Click on the red marked position [c] to set the current flash value for the group. Click repeatedly to change the value in increments of 1, or swipe the display to change the value in increments of 0.1.
• Click on the page scroll button [1] to scroll through the groups, a total of six groups A – F are available.

Further settings in master mode

- Click the settings fade-in button [8] in master mode to open the setting options. Click the arrow buttons to switch the setting selection, swipe up and down or click the setting selection to make specific settings for the selection. The selections are listed in the table below.

Flash power settings

Click on the flash power display [7], swipe up and down on the display or click repeatedly on the number to set the the flash output.

Parameter settings

Swipe left and right in the settings selection to switch between groups/channels and flash mode/wireless signal. Click repeatedly on the symbol of the desired item to set it (see table for details).

Setting the flash output

Swipe up and down on the display or click repeatedly on a single digit to set the flash output.

Parameter settings

To switch between flash mode and synchronisation settings, swipe left and right. Then click repeatedly on the symbol of the element you want to set. The setting options can be found in the table.

Operation

Firmware update

Download the firmware update to your computer, connect the cable to your computer and to the USB-C port of the flash. The firmware update can be updated by copying (dragging) it into the folder.

Battery charging instructions

Remove the lithium battery from the flash and insert it into the charger as shown in the illustration below. When all four power indicators light up permanently green, this means that the charging process of the lithium battery has been completed. Once charging is complete, you must disconnect the power supply and remove the lithium battery to prevent the battery from overcharging.

Overheating protection

If the flash frequency is too high, this can lead to overheating. This is why the flash has overheating protection and longer return times:

The innermost position of the motor:

• After 65 consecutive flashes at intervals of 1.7 seconds, the return time is extended to 10 seconds.
• After 55 consecutive flashes at intervals of 6 seconds, the return time is extended to 10 seconds.

The outermost position of the motor:

• After 30 consecutive flashes at intervals of 1.7 seconds, the return time is extended to 6 seconds.
• After 45 consecutive flashes every 6 seconds, the return time is extended to 10 seconds.

Sleep mode

- If no operation is performed, the device switches to sleep mode after 10 minutes and switches off automatically after 60 minutes. The flash wakes up from sleep mode by pressing any button or the camera shutter release.
