Frequently Asked Questions - X870E VALKYRIE BIOSTAR

What CPU is compatible with the BIOSTAR X870E VALKYRIE?
The motherboard supports AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000, and 7000 series processors for Socket AM5. Check www.biostar.com.tw for the latest CPU support list.
How much memory can I install, and what type?
You can install up to 192 GB of DDR5 memory in 4 DIMM slots. Supports speeds up to 8000+ MHz (OC). Use non-ECC modules (8/16/24/32/48 GB per stick). For dual-channel, populate slots DDR5_A2 and DDR5_B2 first.
How do I update the BIOS?
You can update via SMART BIOS Update (USB button on rear I/O), BIOSTAR BIO-Flasher (during POST), or BIOS Update Utility in Windows. Always back up your current BIOS and load optimized defaults after update.
How do I install an M.2 SSD?
First, remove the M.2 cooling heatsink if installed. Insert the M.2 SSD at a 30-degree angle into the slot, then press down and secure with the rotary latch. For PCIe 5.0 M.2 (M2M_CPU), use slot nearest CPU.
What RAID configurations are supported?
RAID 0, 1, and 10 are supported for SATA storage devices. M.2 NVMe drives do not support RAID via chipset. Use the UEFI BIOS or AMD RAID utility to configure arrays.
How do I use the USB4/Thunderbolt ports?
The two USB4 Type-C ports on the rear I/O support up to 40 Gbps and DisplayPort 1.2. They are fully compatible with Thunderbolt 4 devices. Ensure your CPU supports integrated graphics for video output.
How to control RGB lighting?
Use the Vivid LED DJ software or the VALKYRIE AURORA Utility. Connect your RGB devices to the 5V ARGB (WS2818B) or 12V RGB (5050) headers, then select effects like static, breathing, rainbow, or music sync.
What is the GT Touch utility for?
GT Touch allows you to switch between Normal, ECO, and Sport modes in Windows. Normal balances performance and power, ECO saves energy, and Sport maximizes performance.
Front panel audio not working?
Ensure the front audio cable is connected to the F_AUDIO header. If using an AC'97 chassis, disable 'Front Panel Jack Detection' in the audio driver. The rear audio jacks are automatically muted when headphones are plugged in front.
What should I do if the system won't boot after installing new hardware?
First, clear CMOS by pressing the CLR_CMOS button on the motherboard for 1-2 seconds. If using a new CPU, ensure you have performed 'AC power off + clear CMOS'. Also check all power connectors (24-pin and 2x8-pin CPU).

4.2 RAID Functions

RAID Definitions

In a RAID 0 system data are split up in blocks that get written across all the drives in the array. By using multiple disks (at least 2) at the same time, this offers superior I/O performance. This performance can be enhanced further by using multiple controllers, ideally one controller per disk.

Features and Benefits

  • Drives: Minimum 2, and maximum is up to 6 or 8. Depending on the platform.
  • Uses: Intended for non-critical data requiring high data throughput, or any environment that does not require fault tolerance.
  • Benefits: provides increased data throughput, especially for large files. No capacity loss penalty for parity.
  • Drawbacks: Does not deliver any fault tolerance. If any drive in the array fails, all data is lost.
  • Fault Tolerance: No.
    • Total Capacity: (Minimal. HDD Capacity) x (Connected HDDs Amount)

    E["RAID 1 mirroring"] --> F["Block 1\nBlock 2\nBlock 3"]

Data are stored twice by writing them to both the data disk (or set of data disks) and a mirror disk (or set of disks). If a disk fails, the controller uses either the data drive or the mirror drive for data recovery and continues operation. You need at least 2 disks for a RAID 1 array.

Features and Benefits

  • Drives: Minimum 2, and maximum is 2.
  • Uses: RAID 1 is ideal for small databases or any other application that requires fault tolerance and minimal capacity.
  • Benefits: Provides 100% data redundancy. Should one drive fail, the controller switches to the other drive.
  • Drawbacks: Requires 2 drives for the storage space of one drive. Performance is impaired during drive rebuilds.
  • Fault Tolerance: Yes.

    E["Block 2\nBlock 4\nBlock 6"] --> F["Block 2\nBlock 4\nBlock 6"]

RAID 10 combines the advantages (and disadvantages) of RAID 0 and RAID 1 in one single system. It provides security by mirroring all data on a secondary set of disks (disk 3 and 4 in the drawing below) while using striping across each set of disks to speed up data transfers.

Features and Benefits

  • Drives: Minimum 4, and maximum is 6 or 8, depending on the platform.
  • Benefits: Optimizes for both fault tolerance and performance, allowing for automatic redundancy. May be simultaneously used with other RAID levels in an array, and allows for spare disks.
  • Drawbacks: Requires twice the available disk space for data redundancy, the same as RAID level 1.
  • Fault Tolerance: Yes.
