7. The DAB+ (DIGITAL RADIO) -FUNCTION

7.1 What is DAB+?

DAB+ is a new digital format that lets you hear crystal clear sound without any static. Unlike conventional analogue radio stations, DAB+ broadcasts several stations on the same frequency. This is called Ensemble or Multiplex. An ensemble consists of the radio station as well as several service components or data services, which are broadcast individually by the radio stations. Find out more at www.dabplus.de or www.dabplus.ch for example.

6. MENU OPERATION

7.1.1 Data compression

Digital radio makes use of the effects of human hearing. The human ear does not perceive sounds below a certain minimum volume. Data below the so-called resting hearing threshold can therefore be filtered out. This is possible because the relative volume to other units is stored in a digital data stream for each data unit. In a single sound signal, at a certain threshold value, the quieter components are superimposed by the louder components. All sound information in a piece of music that falls below the so-called listening threshold can be filtered out of the signal to be transmitted. This leads to a reduction of the data stream to be transmitted, without any noticeable sound difference for the listener (HE AAC v2 -method as supplementary coding method for DAB+).

7.1.2 Audio stream

Audio streams in Digital Radio are continuous data streams that contain MPEG 1 Audio Layer 2 frames and thus represent acoustic information. This allows familiar radio programmes to be transmitted and listened to by the receiver. Digital Radio brings you not only radio in excellent sound quality, but also additional information. These can refer to the current programme or be independent of it (e.g. news, weather, traffic, tips).

7.2 DAB+ (Digital Radio) reception

Keep pressing the MODE button (1) until [DAB] is displayed. When starting DAB+ for the first time, a complete station scan is run.
Make sure that the telescopic antenna is fully extended during this process. After a search cycle is completed, the first station in alphabetical order is played.

7.2.1 Running a complete search scan

The full scan searches for all DAB+Band III channels and finds all stations broadcast in the coverage area.

After a search cycle is completed, the first station in alphabetical order is played.

7. The DAB+ (DIGITAL RADIO) -FUNCTION

To run a complete scan, open the menu by pressing and holding the Menu button and using the and Select buttons to select the menu item [Full scan].
The display shows [Scanning...].

During the search, a progress bar and the number of stations found are displayed.

If no station is found, check the telescopic antenna and change the setup location if necessary.

7.2.2 Choosing a station

By pressing the buttons, you can call up the station list and switch between the available stations.

7.2.3 Storing a DAB+ station in a memory slot

The programme memory can store up to 10 stations in the DAB+ range.

Choose the desired station first (see section 7.2.2).
To save this station in a favourite's slot, while the station is playing, press and hold the preset button. Then use the buttons to choose a station memory slot (1...10).

Press the Select button to save.
Repeat this procedure to save more stations.

7.2.4 Playing a DAB+ station stored in a memory slot

To play a station that has been saved on a favourite's slot, briefly press the Preset button and use the buttons to choose a station memory slot (1...10). Press the Select button, to play that station.

If no station has been saved to that station slot, the display will show [(empty)].

7.2.5 Overwriting/Deleting a programme slot save

Simply save a new station to a favourite memory slot as described. When resetting to the factory settings, all stored stations are deleted.

7. The DAB+ (DIGITAL RADIO) -FUNCTION

7.2.6 Signal strength

Repeatedly press the Menu button briefly until the signal strength is displayed.

Minimum signal strength Current signal strength

Stations whose signal strength is below the required minimum signal strength do not send a sufficient signal. If necessary, align the telescopic antenna as described under point 5.2.3.

7.2.7 Manual settings

This menu item serves to check the reception channels and can be used to align the antenna.

Press and hold the Menu button, then use the buttons to select [Set Manually] and then press the Select button.
Use the and Select buttons to choose a channel (5A to 13F). Its signal strength is now shown in the display.

If a DAB+ station is received on a channel, the ensemble name of the station is displayed. The antenna can now be adjusted to maximum signal strength. Stations whose signal strength is below the required minimum signal strength do not send a sufficient signal. If necessary, align the telescopic antenna as described in point 5.2.3.

7.2.8 DRC

With the menu item DRC adjustment you can modify the compression rate, which compensates for dynamic fluctuations and associated volume variations.

7. The DAB+ (DIGITAL RADIO) -FUNCTION

Press and hold the Menu button, then use the buttons to select [volume adjustment].
Press the Select button.
Use to select the compression rate:
DRC high - high compression DRC low - low compression DRC off - compression switched off
Use the Select button to confirm.

7.2.9 Prune

This menu item is used to remove old and no longer receivable stations from the station list. Inactive channels are marked with a question mark in the station list.

Press and hold the Menu button, then use the button to select [Delete inactive stations].

Press the Select button.
