Funktion
The ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2 is an add-on tweeter that is based on the technology of the omni directional ribbon tweeter. This patented tweeter received its name from the physical definition for the maximum solid angle (= 4 Pi).
The ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2 can be connected to main speakers. The 4 PI PLUS.2 offers sound that comes off easily. This add-on tweeter provides spacious sound for a broad listening area and can be used for stereo applications and for home cinema. Even at a value of more than 50 kHz, there will be no resonances.
The ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2 consists of an internal network (it is called crossover network) with filters and protections. This add-on tweeter can be easily connected to main speakers.
The crossover frequency and levels can be adjusted by means of a switch. Therefore, it can be adjusted to meet your individual demands.
Installation
In most cases, the ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2 is positioned on the top of floor-standing loudspeakers. In some cases, interesting results can be achieved, if the 4 PI PLUS.2 is placed behind or next to a main speaker. To ensure perfect omni directional radiation, the distance between the add-on tweeter and reflecting walls should be 50 cm (minimum).
Impedance
The load of the amplifier is increased when two loudspeakers (ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2 and main speakers) are in operation. However, in practice, the results of this are not worth mentioning because it only affects the trebles. It is just important to ensure, that the amplifier is suitable for 4 ohms, regardless whether the main speakers are for 8 or 6 ohms.
There are 2 loudspeaker terminals with cables on the rear of this add-on tweeter. This enables the connection to main speakers. Connect the 4 PI PLUS.2 in parallel to the main speaker. Connect the “+” pole of the add-on tweeter to the "+" pole of the main speaker. Do the same with the negative pole “-” (see figure A).
If the main speaker is provided with a bi-wiring terminal with 4 input sockets, always 2 input sockets are connected in parallel when cable suspension bridges are used. In this case, the cable of the 4 PI PLUS.2 can be connected to the other pair of input sockets (see figure B).
If the main speaker is operating in bi-wiring mode, (i. e. two cable pairs run from the amplifier, cable suspension bridges are opened) the 4 PI PLUS.2 must be connected to the tweeter unit of the main speaker (see figure C).
It is also possible to connect the 4 PI PLUS.2 directly to the amplifier.
If your amplifier offers 2 loudspeaker terminals, the second terminal can be used for the ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2. In this case, you have to adjust the selector switch for loudspeakers on your amplifier (e.g. speakers A + B). This way, the 4 PI PLUS.2 can be easily switched on/off.
Cables with a length of approx. 4 meters should provide a cross-section of 2 x 1.5 qmm. Cables with increased lengths should provide a cross-section of 2 x 2.5 qmm. For low-resistance main speakers, it is recommended to use cables with a cross-section of 2 x 4 qmm.
It is recommended, to use low-inductance cables. Cables with a low-inductance structure provide several tight, cross-wise interwined conductors and return conductors. The ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2 should be used with this certain type of cable when long cable lines are required.

The sensitivity of the ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2 can be adjusted by means of the selector switch (1). The sensitivity should be "0" when used with main speakers that provide approx. 88 dB/2.8V/m.
If the values of your loudspeakers are below this, (and to decrease the effect of the ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2), the selector switch (1) can be adjusted in the appropriate way (-2 dB or -4 dB) in order to reduce the levels. If the sound of the 4 PI PLUS.2 is too low at „0“, compared to the sound of the main speakers, the level can be increased (+2 dB oder +4 dB) by adjusting the selector switch (1). The best result will be determined by listening.
Bi-amping
A second stereo amplifier (starting with 2 x 20 W) with adjusters for levels and volume enables the individual adjustment of the 4 PI PLUS.2 according to your demands. It also enables the perfect adjustment with main speakers that provide a sensitivity of 92 dB/2.8V/m.
The volume should not be too loud for presetting.
The crossover frequency of the add-on tweeter ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2 can be adjusted by means of a selector switch (2). This enables maximum flexibility in regard of the adjustment of the main speakers and also in regard of your individual taste. The following figure shows the frequency responses of the ELAC 4 PI PLUS.2, depending on the position of the selector switch (2). The mid-position of the switch is "12 kHz". This is an appropriate position for other possible adjustments. If the spacious sound effect of the 4 PI PLUS.2 shall be increased, the switch should be turned to "10 kHz". The adjustment of the position "15 kHz" enables the 4 PI PLUS.2 to reproduce only the highest frequencies. This way, the room is excited by only these frequencies and there is a low effect of spaciousness.
