How do I turn on the lightning detector?

Press the Power Button (⏻) to turn the detector ON. The display will show 'PLEASE WAIT' while it calibrates, then 'LISTENING..' when ready. To turn it off, press and hold the power button for 3 seconds.

What is the difference between indoor and outdoor mode?

Outdoor mode is the default setting for general use. Indoor mode reduces sensitivity to interference, making it suitable for indoor use. To switch, press and hold the '✿' and '' buttons for 2 seconds until you hear a beep and see 'INDOOR' on the display. The detector reverts to outdoor mode when powered off.

How do I mute the audio alerts?

To mute audio alerts for up to 60 minutes, press and hold the LIGHT button for 5 seconds. The display shows 'MUTED'. Visual alerts (LED and display) remain active. To re-enable sound, press and hold the LIGHT button again for 5 seconds until 'SOUND ON' appears.

Why does my detector display 'UNABLE TO DETECT... PLEASE RELOCATE'?

This message indicates interference from nearby electronics (e.g., motors, CRT monitors, microwave ovens). Relocate the detector at least 3 feet away from such sources. Avoid placing it near computers, fluorescent lights, or mobile phones.

How do I change the distance units from miles to kilometers?

Press the 'miles/km' button located inside the battery compartment. Each press toggles between miles and kilometers. The selected unit is used for the estimated storm distance display.

How do I change the language?

Press the 'english/français' button located inside the battery compartment to toggle between English and French. The display language for alerts and messages will change accordingly.

How do I replace the batteries?

Remove the belt clip, then remove the battery compartment cover. Insert 2 x AAA alkaline batteries following the polarity diagram (+/-). Replace the cover and belt clip. Use high-quality alkaline batteries; do not use rechargeable or heavy-duty batteries.

What does the low battery indicator mean?

When the battery icon appears on the display and the detector beeps once per minute, it indicates low battery. Replace the batteries promptly to ensure proper operation. Expected battery life is 8-10 months under normal use.

What is the detection range of the AcuRite 02020CA?

The detector can sense lightning strikes within a range of 1 to 25 miles (1.6 to 40 km). It detects cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-ground, and intra-cloud lightning. Strikes beyond 25 miles are not reported.

How do I clean and maintain the detector?

Clean the exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use caustic cleaners or abrasives. The detector is weather resistant but not waterproof; avoid direct exposure to rain. Store in a dry place when not in use.

Install or Replace Batteries

AcuRite recommends high quality alkaline batteries for the best product performance. Heavy duty or rechargeable batteries are not recommended.

1. Remove the belt clip.
2. Remove the battery cover.
3. Insert 2 x AAA batteries into the battery compartment, as shown. Follow the polarity (+/-) diagram in the battery compartment.
4. Replace the battery cover.
5. Replace the belt clip.

Select Miles or Kilometers Distance Units

To select between miles or kilometers distance units, press the "miles/km" button located inside the battery compartment area.

Select English or French Language

To select between English and French, press the "english/français" button located inside the battery compartment area.

BATTERY SAFETY: Clean the battery contacts and also those of the device prior to battery installation. Remove batteries from equipment which is not to be

used for an extended period of time. Follow the polarity (+/-) diagram in the battery compartment. Promptly remove dead batteries from the device. Dispose of used batteries properly. Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to be used. DO NOT incinerate used batteries. DO NOT dispose of batteries in fire, as batteries may explode or leak. DO NOT mix old and new batteries or types of batteries (alkaline/standard). DO NOT use rechargeable batteries. DO NOT recharge non-rechargeable batteries. DO NOT short-circuit the supply terminals.

Using the Lightning Detector

Power On/Off

Press " ⏻ button to turn the detector ON. The detector will display "PLEASE WAIT" while it automatically calibrates itself. When calibration is complete "LISTENING.." will display, indicating it is ready for use. Press AND HOLD the " ⏻ button for 3 seconds to turn the detector off.

Indoor & Outdoor Modes

Outdoor mode is the default setting. Indoor Mode optimizes the performance of the detector for indoor use by making it less sensitive to interference. To select indoor mode, press AND HOLD the "✿ and " 🔊 buttons for 2 seconds until you hear a beep. The display will say "INDOOR". When powered off, the detector will return to its default, outdoor mode.

Lightning Detected

The device detects cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-ground and intra-cloud lightning. When lightning is detected, the device emits two beeps and the red light flashes. The display indicates "STRIKES DETECTED!", and "COUNT" displays a running count of lightning strikes detected. The detector estimates the distance to the front of the lightning-producing storm. The detector alerts and flashes the light every 5 seconds until no strikes are detected for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes of inactivity, the detector will return to its default "LISTENING.." state. The "COUNT" resets when the device is powered off.

False Detection

This detector features advanced technology to distinguish between lightning strikes and interference, however in rare cases the detector may "false detect" lightning activity due to interference. In these situations, verify there is no lightning in the area and then relocate the detector. If the false detections persist, identify and relocate the source of interference or relocate the detector.

Silencing Audio Alerts

Audio alerts (beeps) are enabled by default each time the device is powered on. Audio alerts can be temporarily silenced for up to 60 minutes. To temporarily silence audio alerts, press and hold the "LIGHT" button for 5 seconds. The device will display "MUTED". The visual alerts from the LED light and display messages will remain active even when audio alerts have been silenced. When the device detects a lightning strike while audio alerts are muted, the device will display the message, "STRIKES DETECTED! MUTED" along with the strike indicator/flushing LED, updated strike count and updated estimated distance. The device will re-activate audio alerts after 60 minutes or after audio alerts have been re-enabled. To re-enable audio alerts, press and hold the "LIGHT" button for 5 seconds. The device will display "SOUND ON".

Interference

The detector features enhanced interference rejection capabilities to prevent false lightning detection. When the detector cannot detect lightning due to interference from nearby equipment, the detector sounds a single audible beep and displays "UNABLE TO DETECT...PLEASE RELOCATE."

Use the detector at least 3 feet away from sources of interference, including:

• Electric motors (windshield wiper motor or fan motors in cars, hard drive and optical drive motors on your PC and AV equipment, well pumps, sump pumps)
• CRT monitors (PC monitors, TV's)
- Fluorescent light fixtures (turned off or on)
• Microwave ovens (while in use)
• PC's and mobile phones

WARNING: Take shelter IMMEDIATELY when lightning is present, whether or not it has been detected by the Lightning Detector. If you are concerned about lightning strikes, follow all safety precautions to keep yourself and others safe. DO NOT rely on this Lightning Detector as your only source for warnings about potentially deadly lightning strikes or other severe weather conditions.

Troubleshooting

Display reads "UNABLE TO DETECT...PLEASE RELOCATE"	Relocate the detector.Make sure the detector is placed at least 3 feet (.9 m) away from electronics that may cause interference (see page 6).
Display screen not working	Check that the batteries are installed correctly. Batteries may need to be replaced.
Detector beeping	Review the Alerts & Messages chart above to determine why the detector is beeping.

Chaney Instrument Co. warrants that all products it manufactures to be of good material and workmanship, and to be free of defects when properly installed and operated for a period of one year from the date of purchase. Remedy for breach of this warranty is limited to repair or replacement of the defective item(s). Any product which, under normal use and service, is proven to breach the warranty contained herein within ONE YEAR from date of sale will, upon examination by Chaney, and at its sole option, be repaired or replaced by Chaney.
