WARNING!

• Make sure that you are capable of using the ladder. Certain medical conditions and certain medications, alcohol or drugs can make use of the ladder unsafe.
• When transporting ladders on support beams or in a lorry, make sure that they are placed appropriately to prevent injuries/damage.
• Inspect the ladder after delivery and before initial use to check the condition and function of all components.
• Inspect the ladder visually for damage and check that it is safe to use at the start of each work day the ladder is used.
• The ladder must be inspected on a regular basis for professional use. Make sure that the ladder is suitable for the task.
• Do not use a damaged ladder.
• Remove dirt, e.g. wet paint, clay, oil or snow, from the ladder.
• Before using a ladder at work, make a risk assessment in accordance with the applicable regulations in the country of use.

HANDLING

• The ladder must be raised in the correct position, e.g. at the correct angle for a ladder leaning against a structure (angle of inclination should be approx. 1:4) with the steps horizontal and freestanding ladders should be fully extended.
• Restraint devices, if such exist, must be fully secured prior to use.
• The ladder must be placed on a level, even and stationary base.
• A ladder leaning against a structure must lean against an even, non-fragile surface and should be fastened before use, e.g. be tied down using an appropriate stability device.
• Never move the ladder from the top.
• Once the ladder has been positioned, pay attention to the risk of collisions with the ladder, e.g. by pedestrians, vehicles or doors. Where possible, lock doors (not emergency exits) and windows within the work area.
• Find out if there are any electrical hazards in the work area, e.g. overhead lines or other detached electric equipment.

• Always stand the ladder on its feet, not on its top tread.
- Do not place the ladder on slippery surfaces (e.g. ice, shiny surfaces or heavily soiled solid surfaces) unless additional steps have been taken to prevent the ladder from sliding or by making sure that the soiled surfaces are adequately cleaned.
- Do not exceed the maximum load for the ladder.
- Do not over-reach; users should keep their belt buckle (navel) inside the side rails and both feet on the same tread while working.
- Do not step off the ladder at heights without taking additional safety measures, e.g. by tying the ladder down or by using an appropriate stability device.
- Do not use freestanding ladders to get to a different level.
