USER MANUAL M0014A Emos
The VT-310 tester is designed for two-pole measurement of voltage in DC and AC circuits between 110 and 400 V with a frequency of 0–60 Hz, in order to identify the phase conductor, the phase sequence in a three-phase system with neutral conductor and to determine the polarity of DC voltage.
The tester meets the requirements of standard EN 61243-3:2014, in range 110–400 V/ CAT III 400 V, with protection rating of IP54.
Its range of working temperatures is -10 °C to +50 °C, humidity 20–96 %.
The tester can be used for making measurements in electrical wiring and devices falling within overvoltage category CAT III 400 V.
Overvoltage category CAT III also includes category CAT II for electrical devices and equipment with special requirements on their safety and usability.
These are, for instance, domestic wiring, protective installations, power outlets, switches, circuit breakers etc.
Description of Tester
- Mobile measuring tip
- Slider
- Measuring tip of the tester
- Glow lamp
- Tester guard
- Polarity LEDs
-
AC voltage gauge
-
Metal pin
- Tester lug
When measuring with the mobile measuring tip, you must move the slider down to expose the metal tip; see figure B.
Voltage Indication
The amount of voltage in the circuit is indicated by an electromagnet which pulls in a sprung iron core. The indicator will show the voltage values on a scale (both LEDs glow). See figure C.
Identifying the Phase Conductor
The identification of the phase conductor is performed using the glow lamp in the left-side window of the tester. Hold the tester so that your hand is touching the metal pin on the rear of the cover and place the measuring tip onto the phase conductor. If phase voltage is detected on the conductor, the glow lamp will turn on. The current passing through the body is below 0.25 mA. See figure D, E.
Determining the Phase Sequence
Phase sequence is determined using the glow lamp and a circuit consisting of resistors and capacitors which creates voltage depending on the direction of the phase rotation. The hand touches the metal protrusion on the rear of the tester. Placing the fixed tip on the preceding phase and the mobile tip onto the following phase turns on the glow lamp. In the reverse phase sequence, the glow lamp will be off (LEDs on). See figure F, G.
Determining the Polarity of DC Voltage
The polarity of DC voltage is indicated by two LEDs. If the positive pole is located on the mobile measuring tip, the red "+" diode will light up; see figure H.
If the negative pole is located on the mobile measuring tip, the green "-" diode will light up; see figure 1.
WARNING
- Do not use the device if the leads or cover are damaged.
- The device may only be operated by a responsible and trained person.
- Do not test voltage through contact if you do not know the exact voltage in the circuit!
- ATTENTION! The measurement time must not be longer than 10 seconds, especially in higher voltages.
- The maximum measurement time must not exceed 30 seconds or the device will be damaged.
- A pause of 240 seconds must follow after each measurement.
- When measuring, hold the probe by the mechanical guard on the tester body. This will prevent accidental contact with the metal portion of the probe, which could otherwise cause injury by electric current during measurement.
- The voltage listed on the tester is nominal voltage. The tester may only be used in installations with the listed nominal voltage.
- The tester can only be used for testing voltages above the ELV threshold (Extra low voltage).
- The tester must be checked before and after testing. If the indicators on the tester are failing, the tester must not be used.
- In case of usage on higher voltage than prescribed, the electromagnetic coil may become damaged and the tester would become unusable.
- Do not modify the measuring tips or any other parts of the tester. If the tester is malfunctioning or otherwise damaged, have it repaired in a professional repair shop.
- Do not use the tester if its components are wet.
Maintenance
The tester is designed to require no service on any of its components and is maintenance-free.
Cleaning:
- Occasionally wipe the tester with a soft moistened cloth and common home detergent. Do not use aggressive solvents.
- Prevent ingress of water into the interior of the device to protect the device against short circuits and other types of damage.
This device is not intended for use by persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental disability or lack of experience and knowledge prevents safe use, unless they are supervised or instructed regarding use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children must always be supervised and must never play with the device.

Do not dispose with domestic waste. Use special collection points for sorted waste. Contact local authorities for information about collection points. If the electronic devices would be disposed on landfill, dangerous substances may reach ground- and subsequently food chain, where it could affect human health.
Emos spol s.r.o. declares that the VT-310 is in compliance with the essential requirements and other relevant provisions of Directive. The device can be freely operated in the EU. The Declaration of Conformity can be found at http://www.emos.eu/download.
