Frequently Asked Questions - DMX Power Splitter 4x4 Eurolite

What is the DMX Power Splitter 4x4 used for?
The Eurolite DMX Power Splitter 4x4 is used to distribute a single DMX512 signal to up to four independent outputs. It regenerates the signal on each output to maintain signal integrity over long cable runs, and provides galvanic isolation to prevent ground loops.
How many DMX devices can I connect to one output?
Each output can drive up to 32 DMX devices (standard DMX load) when using proper cabling. For larger installations, use additional splitters or DMX boosters.
Does the splitter require an external power supply?
Yes, the splitter has a built-in power supply and comes with an IEC power cord. It operates on 100-240V AC and consumes about 15W. It does not send power to the connected DMX fixtures; it only regenerates the data signal.
What do the LED indicators mean?
The Power LED indicates the unit is receiving AC power. The DMX LEDs (one per output) light up when a valid DMX signal is present on that output. If an LED is off, check the cable connection or the source controller.
Can I rack-mount this splitter?
Yes, the unit is designed in a standard 19-inch 1U rack format and includes mounting brackets and screws for installation in a professional equipment rack.
What type of DMX connectors does it use?
The splitter uses 3-pin XLR connectors: one female input and four male outputs. This is the most common connector for DMX512. For 5-pin applications, use appropriate adapters.
Is the splitter compatible with RDM?
The standard model does not support RDM (Remote Device Management). It is a basic DMX splitter that passes through the DMX data and does not respond to RDM commands. Check with Eurolite for an RDM-compatible version if needed.
How do I terminate the DMX line?
Use a DMX terminator (120 ohm resistor between pins 2 and 3) on the last fixture of each daisy-chain, not on the splitter outputs. The splitter itself does not require termination.
Can I use the splitter with other control protocols?
No, this splitter is designed exclusively for USITT DMX512-A protocol. It will not work with analog 0-10V, Art-Net (Ethernet), or other digital protocols without a separate converter.
What should I do if an output LED remains off?
First, ensure the source controller is sending DMX data. Check the input cable and try a known-good cable. Verify that the output cable is properly connected and not damaged. If the LED still does not light, the output may be defective; contact Eurolite support.

SETUP

Installation

Install the unit on a plane surface or in a rack. The rack should be provided with doors on the front and rear panel and a cooling fan. When mounting the device into the rack, please make sure that there is enough space around the device so that the heated air can be passed on. Steady overheating will damage your device. You can fix the device with four screws M6 in the rack.

DMX512 connection

For connection, use special DMX cables for high data flow.

1 Feed the DMX control signal to the XLR input DMX IN.
2 Each of the unit's DMX outputs 1 to 4 allows connection of one DMX chain, which in turn may consist of a maximum of 32 DMX devices. At the last fixture in the DMX chain, the DMX line has to be terminated by a resistor (120 Ω).
3 You can connect an additional DMX splitter or DMX chain with up to 32 DMX devices to the DMX feed-through output DMX LINK. If the DMX splitter should terminate this DMX chain, press the TERMINATE selector switch. Then a termination resistor is connected.

Connection to the power supply

1 Connect the mains cable provided to the POWER IN jack and to a grounded mains socket.
2 Connect the supply line of your DMX fixtures to the POWER OUT jacks 1-4. A maximum load of 4 A can be powered on each power output.

LED indicators

When the unit is powered on the red power indicators is lit up. When the unit receives a DMX signal all blue indicators for DMX in and out come on. This is useful to immediately identify a faulty output channel.

Select RDM filter mode

By default, the splitter transmits RDM data between the connected devices in both directions. Press the RDM FILTER switch if the RDM data should be filtered out of the DMX line. Select this setting for devices without RDM support, otherwise they might flicker or show other undesired reactions.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

The outside of the device should be cleaned periodically to remove contaminants such as dust etc.

1 Disconnect the device from power and allow it to cool before cleaning.
2 Clean the surface with a soft lint-free and moistened cloth. Never use alcohol or solvents as these may damage the surface. Make sure that no liquids can enter the device.
3 The device must be dry before reapplying power.

There are no serviceable parts inside. Do not open the housing. Do not try to repair the device by yourself as this may result in damage. Maintenance and service operations are only to be carried out by authorized dealers. Should you need any spare parts, please use genuine parts. Should you have further questions, please contact your dealer.

Replacing the fuse

If the fine-wire fuse of the device fuses, only replace the fuse by a fuse of same type and rating.

1 Disconnect the device from power and allow it to cool.
2 Open the fuse holder of the mains connection with a fitting screwdriver.
3 Remove the old fuse from the fuse holder and replace it with a new fuse.
4 Carefully push the fuse holder back into its position before reapplying power.
