Frequently Asked Questions - MA-5D ROLAND

How do I connect the MA-5D to my audio interface?
Use a standard 1/4" TS or RCA cable from your interface output to the corresponding input on the speaker. Ensure volume is turned down before connecting.
The speaker produces no sound. What should I check?
First, verify the power LED is lit. Check all cable connections and ensure the volume is turned up. Test with another audio source to isolate the issue.
Can I use the MA-5D as a computer speaker?
Yes, connect your computer's headphone or line-out to the RCA or 1/4" input using an appropriate adapter cable.
How do I clean the speaker cabinet?
Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Do not use any cleaning agents, sprays, or liquids as they may damage the surface.
What is the correct power adaptor for the MA-5D?
Use only the Roland PSB-1U or equivalent DC 12V adaptor with center-positive polarity. Using an incorrect adaptor may damage the speaker.
There is a humming noise from the speaker. How can I fix it?
Humming is often caused by ground loops. Try connecting all audio equipment to the same power strip, or use a ground lift adapter on the speaker's power cord.
Can I mount the MA-5D on a speaker stand?
The MA-5D features a standard 5/8" screw hole on the bottom for mounting on a speaker stand or microphone stand adapter. Ensure the stand supports the weight.
What is the maximum input level?
The input is designed for line-level signals (+4 dBu typical). Avoid connecting high-power amplifier outputs directly.
Does the speaker have a built-in crossover?
Yes, the MA-5D has an internal passive crossover network to direct frequencies to the appropriate driver.
How do I adjust the tonal balance?
The MA-5D does not have EQ controls. Use the audio source's EQ or an external equalizer to adjust tonal balance.

IMPORTANT NOTES

In addition to the items listed under “USING THE UNIT SAFELY” on page 9--10, please read and observe the following:

Power Supply

- Before connecting this unit to other devices, turn off the power to all units. This will help prevent malfunctions and/or damage to speakers or other devices.

Placement

  • Using the unit near power amplifiers (or other equipment containing large power transformers) may induce hum. To alleviate the problem, change the orientation of this unit; or move it farther away from the source of interference.
  • This device may interfere with radio and television reception. Do not use this device in the vicinity of such receivers.
  • Noise may be produced if wireless communications devices, such as cell phones, are operated in the vicinity of this unit. Such noise could occur when receiving or initiating a call, or while conversing. Should you experience such problems, you should relocate such wireless devices so they are at a greater distance from this unit, or switch them off.
  • Do not expose the unit to direct sunlight, place it near devices that radiate heat, leave it inside an enclosed vehicle, or otherwise subject it to temperature extremes. Excessive heat can deform or discolor the unit.
  • To avoid possible breakdown, do not use the unit in a wet area, such as an area exposed to rain or other moisture.

Maintenance

- For everyday cleaning wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth or one that has been slightly dampened with water. To remove stubborn dirt, use a cloth impregnated with a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Afterwards, be sure to wipe the unit thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth.

- Never use benzine, thinners, alcohol or solvents of any kind, to avoid the possibility of discoloration and/or deformation.

Additional Precautions

  • Use a reasonable amount of care when using the unit's buttons, sliders, or other controls; and when using its jacks and connectors. Rough handling can lead to malfunctions.
  • When connecting / disconnecting all cables, grasp the connector itself—never pull on the cable. This way you will avoid causing shorts, or damage to the cable's internal elements.
  • To avoid disturbing your neighbors, try to keep the unit's volume at reasonable levels (especially when it is late at night).
  • When you need to transport the unit, package it in the box (including padding) that it came in, if possible. Otherwise, you will need to use equivalent packaging materials.
  • Be sure to avoid inserting your fingers in the bass reflex ports when transporting or moving the

-EDIROL-

speakers, as your fingers may become wedged and stuck in the ports.

- Use a cable from Roland to make the connection. If using some other make of connection cable, please note the following precautions.

- Some connection cables contain resistors. Do not use cables that incorporate resistors for connecting to this unit. The use of such cables can cause the sound level to be extremely low, or impossible to hear. For information on cable specifications, contact the manufacturer of the cable.
