Frequently Asked Questions - FCB-KM STIHL

How do I adjust the cutting depth on the FCB-KM edger?
To adjust the depth, shut off the engine and loosen the wingnut (1) counterclockwise. Move the depth wheel (2) upward to increase depth or downward to decrease. Tighten the wingnut and check the depth in normal working posture; the blade should barely touch the ground or penetrate at most 5 mm.
What type of cutting blade does the FCB-KM use?
The FCB-KM uses a metal cutting blade designed for edging grass, weeds, and soft green plants. Only use genuine STIHL blades and do not resharpen them.
Can I use the FCB-KM edger as a hedge trimmer?
No, the edger is intended only for ground-level edging with the blade perpendicular to the ground. Using it above ground or as a hedge trimmer increases risk of injury and is strictly prohibited.
How do I replace the cutting blade on the FCB-KM?
First, shut off the engine and ensure the blade has stopped. Remove the nut (left-hand thread) using an Allen wrench and a locking pin to block the shaft. Position the new blade with the collar engaging the hole, then fit the thrust washer and tighten the nut counterclockwise. Replace the nut if the cup spring is fatigued.
What safety equipment should I wear when operating the FCB-KM?
Always wear goggles or protective glasses with side protection (ANSI Z87+), heavy-duty work gloves, sturdy boots with nonslip soles, long pants, and hearing protection. Use a safety hard hat if there is a risk of head injury.
How do I start the engine with the FCB-KM attached?
Place the machine on firm ground, ensure the blade is clear of obstacles, and follow the starting instructions for your KombiEngine. Once the engine starts, blip the throttle to release the starting throttle and allow idling. Never start with the starting throttle lock engaged.
How often should I check the blade and safety components?
Inspect the blade, wingnut, skirt, and wear guard visually before each use. Check blade tightness at regular intervals during cutting. Replace any damaged or worn parts immediately.
What should I do if the blade loosens during operation?
Stop the engine immediately, wait for the blade to stop, and tighten the retaining nut using the supplied wrench. If the blade continues to loosen, the nut may be worn and should be replaced. Do not operate with a loose blade.
Can I use a pressure washer to clean the FCB-KM?
No, do not clean with a pressure washer. The solid jet of water may damage parts. Instead, clean dust and dirt with a cloth; do not use grease solvents.
How do I store the FCB-KM for long periods?
Remove, clean, and inspect the cutting blade. If storing the KombiTool separately, fit the protective cap on the drive tube. Store in a dry, high, or locked location out of reach of children.

Storing the Machine Replacing the Depth Wheel

For periods of 3 months or longer

  • Remove, clean and inspect the cutting blade.
  • If the KombiTool is removed from the KombiEngine and stored separately: Fit the protective cap on the drive tube to avoid dirt getting into the coupling.
  • Store the machine in a dry, high or locked location – out of the reach of children and other unauthorized persons.

Have the worn wheel replaced by a specialist dealer. STIHL recommends that maintenance and repair work be carried out only by authorized STIHL dealers.

●End of screw thread (1) is deformed so that the wingnut (2) cannot be lost

The wingnut can only be unscrewed from the screw with lots of force. If the parts are joined again after this, the function of the "filler cap retainer" is no longer assured. In this case, have the screw and wingnut replaced with new ones by a specialist dealer.

STIHL recommends the use of only genuine STIHL blades.

Do not resharpen the blade!

- Replace the blade (1), if its length (A) is no longer sufficient to adjust the depth of cut (C) with the necessary ground clearance (B).

Checking the balance

To avoid out-of-balance blades:
●Have the blade checked by a servicing dealer with the STIHL balancer (special accessory) to see if it is out of balance – STIHL recommends the STIHL servicing dealer – replace the blade if it is out of balance, see "Fitting the blade"
