CAUTION: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.

1 Save and close all open files and exit all open programs.
2 Click Start and click Shut Down.

Microsoft Windows shuts down and then the computer turns off.

NOTE: If you are using a different operating system, see the documentation of your operating system for shut-down instructions.

3 Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.
4 Disconnect all telephone cables, network cables, and attached devices from your computer.
5 After the computer is unplugged, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds to ground the system board.

CAUTION: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could harm internal components.

CAUTION: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs or thumb-screws that you must disengage before disconnecting the cable. When disconnecting cables, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. When connecting cables, ensure that the connectors and ports are correctly oriented and aligned.

2 After Working Inside Your Computer

After you complete the replacement procedures, ensure the following:

Replace all screws and ensure that no stray screws remain inside your computer
Connect any external devices, cables, cards, and any other part(s) you removed before working on your computer
Connect your computer and all attached devices to their electrical outlets

4 Removing the Back Cover

Procedure

1 Place the computer face-down on a clean and flat surface.
2 Loosen the captive screws that secure the back cover to the inner frame.
3 Slide the back cover toward the top of the computer and lift the back cover off the computer base.

1 Place the back cover over the inner frame and slide the back cover toward the bottom of the computer.
2 Tighten the captive screws that secure the back cover to the inner frame.

1 Lift the securing tab on the display-backlight cable connector and then disconnect the display-backlight cable from the convertor board.

12 Removing the Power-Supply Unit

Procedure

1 Press the securing clips and disconnect the main and processor power-supply cables from the system board.
2 Remove the main and processor power-supply cables from their routing guides.
3 Press the securing clip on the power-port cable connector and disconnect the power-port cable from the power-supply unit.
4 Disconnect the power-supply indicator cable from the power-supply unit.
5 Lift the securing clip and disconnect the power-supply fan cable from the power-supply unit.
6 Remove the screws that secure the power-supply unit to the computer base.

7 Lift the power-supply unit off the computer base.

1 Align the screw holes on the power-supply unit with the screw holes on the computer base and replace the screws that secure the power-supply unit to the computer base.
2 Connect the power-supply fan cable to the power-supply unit.
3 Connect the power-supply indicator cable to the power-supply unit.
4 Connect the power-port cable to the power-supply unit.
5 Route the processor and main power-supply cables through their routing guides.
6 Connect the processor and main power-supply cables to the system board.

14 Removing the Memory Module(s)

1 Remove the screw that secures the memory-module shield to the system-board shield.
2 Slide the memory-module shield toward the bottom of the computer to remove it from the system-board shield.

3 Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory-module connector until the memory module pops up.

4 Remove the memory module from the memory-module connector.

Procedure

1 Align the notch on the memory module with the tab on the memory-module connector.
2 Slide the memory module firmly into the connector at a 45-degree angle and press the memory module down until it clicks into place. If you do not hear the click, remove the memory module and reinstall it.

16 Removing the Coin-Cell Battery

WARNING: The battery may explode if installed incorrectly. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type. Discard used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions.

CAUTION: Removing the coin-cell battery resets the BIOS settings to default. It is recommended that you note the BIOS settings before removing the coin-cell battery.

Procedure

1 Press the securing clip away from the coin-cell battery till the coin-cell battery pops out.

1 With the positive-side facing up, snap the coin-cell battery into the coin-cell battery socket on the system board.

1 Insert the tab at the top of the stand into the slot on the computer base.
2 Align the screw holes on the stand with the screw holes on the hard-drive cage.
3 Replace the screws that secure the stand to the hard-drive cage.

1 Using the straps on the hard-drive assembly, gently lift the hard-drive assembly out of the hard-drive cage.
2 Disconnect the power and data-cable connector from the hard-drive assembly.

CAUTION: Hard drives are extremely fragile. Exercise care when handling the hard drive.

Procedure

1 Align the screw holes on the straps with the screw holes on the hard drive and replace the screws that secure the straps to the hard drive.
2 Connect the power and data-cable connector to the hard-drive assembly.
3 With the straps facing up, align the hard-drive assembly screws with the slots on the hard-drive cage, and then gently press down the hard-drive assembly.

NOTE: The original thermal grease can be reused if the original system board and heat sink are reinstalled together. If either the system board or the heat sink is replaced with a new one, use the thermal pad provided in the kit to ensure that thermal conductivity is achieved.

1 Clean the thermal grease from the bottom of the processor heat-sink and reapply the thermal grease.
2 Align the captive screws on the processor heat-sink with the screw holes on the system board.
3 In sequential order (indicated on the processor heat-sink), tighten the captive screws that secure the processor heat-sink to the system board.
4 Replace the screw that secures the cooling vents and the grounding cable to the computer base.

Entering System Setup

1 Turn on (or restart) your computer.
2 During POST, when the DELL logo is displayed, watch for the F2 prompt to appear and then press immediately.

NOTE: The F2 prompt indicates that the keyboard has initialized. This prompt can appear very quickly, so you must watch for it, and then press . System Setup Screens

The system setup screen displays current or changeable configuration information for your computer. Information on the screen is divided into three areas: the setup item, active help screen, and key functions.

Setup Item — This field appears on the left side of the system setup window. This field is a scrollable list containing features that define the configuration of your computer, including installed hardware, power conservation, and security features.Scroll up and down the list with the up- and down-arrow keys. As an option is highlighted, the Help Screen displays more information about that option and available settings.

Help Screen — This field appears on the right side of the system setup window and contains information about each option listed in the Setup Item. In this field you can view information about your computer and make changes to your current settings.Press the up- and down-arrow keys to highlight an option. Press <Enter> to make that selection active and return to the Setup Item.NOTE: Not all settings listed in the Setup Item are changeable.

Intel (R) Hyper-Threading Technology	If enabled, each physical processor core appears as two logical processor cores.
Intel (R) SpeedStep Technology	If enabled, the processor clock speed and core voltage are adjusted dynamically based on the processor load.
Intel (R) Virtualization Technology	If enabled, a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) will be able to access your computer.

CPU XD Support If enabled, will allow your computer to use Executive Display (XD) to hinder software that exploits buffer overflows.

Limit CPUID Value If enabled, limits the maximum value the processor CPUID function will support.

Multi Core Support If enabled, allows your computer to use all cores available in the processor.

Intel(R) Turbo Boost Technology If enabled, allows your computer to use turbo boost when required.

Advanced → USB Configuration

Rear USB Ports Allows you to enable or disable the USB ports at the back of your computer.

Side USB Ports Allows you to enable or disable the USB ports at the side of your computer.

Onboard Audio Controller Allows you to enable or disable the onboard audio controller.

SATA Mode Allows you to configure the integrated hard drive controller to ATA or AHCI.

USB PowerShare in S4/S5 State	Allows you to charge USB devices when the computer is in S4/S5 state.
USB PowerShare in Sleep State	Allows you to charge USB devices when the computer is in sleep state, but the wake-up function is disabled.
Auto Power On Allows the computer to start up automatically at a pre-configured time.
Auto Power On Mode Allows you to set the auto power-on mode.
Auto Power On Date Allows you to set the auto power-on date.
Auto Power On Time Allows you to set the auto power-on time.

Security

Supervisor Password Displays the status of the supervisor password.

User Password Allows you to change the user password. You cannot use the user password to enter the BIOS setup during POST.

Set Supervisor Password Allows you to set a supervisor password.

User Access Level Allows you to set the user-access level.

Set User Password Allows you to set a user password.

Password Check Allows you to configure when the computer prompts for passwords. (When entering system setup or at every boot)

Save Changes and Reset Allows you to save the changes.

Changing Boot Sequence

Changing Boot Sequence for the Current Boot

You can use this feature to change the current boot sequence, for example, to boot from the optical drive to run Dell Diagnostics from the Drivers and Utilities disc. The previous boot sequence is restored at the next boot.

1 If you are booting from a USB device, connect the USB device to a USB port.
2 Turn on (or restart) your computer.
3 When F2 Setup, F12 Boot Options appears in the lower-right corner of the screen, press .

5 Wait for approximately five seconds to clear the password setting.
6 Remove the 2-pin jumper plug from pins 1 and 2 and replace it on pins 2 and 3.
7 Replace the system-board shield. See "Replacing the System-Board Shield" on page 33.

Clearing CMOS Settings

1 Remove the back cover. See "Removing the Back Cover" on page 19.
2 Remove the system-board shield. See "Removing the System-Board Shield" on page 31.
3 Locate the CMOS reset jumper on the system board. See "System-Board Components" on page 16.
4 Remove the 2-pin jumper plug from pins 2 and 3 and fix it on pins 1 and 2.

5 Wait for approximately five seconds to clear the CMOS setting.

You may need to flash the BIOS when an update is available or after replacing the system board. To flash the BIOS:

1 Turn on the computer.
2 Go to support.dell.com/support/downloads.
3 Locate the BIOS update file for your computer:

NOTE: The Service Tag for your computer is located on a label at the back of your computer. For more information, see the Quick Start Guide that shipped with your computer.

If you have your computer's Service Tag or Express Service Code:

a Enter your computer's Service Tag or Express Service Code in the Service Tag or Express Service Code field.
b Click Submit and proceed to step 4.

If you do not have your computer's Service Tag or Express Service Code:

a Select one of the following options:

• Automatically detect my Service Tag for me
- Choose from My Products and Services List
- Choose from a list of all Dell products

b Click Continue and follow the instructions on the screen.

4 A list of results appears on the screen. Click BIOS.
5 Click Download File to download the latest BIOS file.
6 In the Please select your download method below window, click For Single File Download via Browser, and then click Download Now.

The File Download window appears.

7 In the Save As window, select an appropriate location to download the file on your computer.
8 If the Download Complete window appears, click Close.
9 Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the BIOS update file.
10 Double-click the BIOS update file icon and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
