Frequently Asked Questions - Alienware 13 R3 DELL

How do I upgrade the RAM in my Alienware 13 R3?
To upgrade RAM, first remove the base cover (5 captive screws). Then gently spread the clips on the memory module slots; the module will pop up. Slide it out and replace with a compatible DDR4 SODIMM (up to 32 GB total). Press down until it clicks. Replace the base cover.
Can I replace the solid-state drive (SSD) myself?
Yes, the M.2 SSD is user-replaceable. After removing the base cover, remove the single M2x3 screw securing the SSD, lift and slide it out. Insert the new SSD at an angle, align the notch, press down, and secure with the screw. Ensure the thermal pad is adhered if provided.
How do I replace the battery?
Remove the base cover, wireless card, SSD, rear-I/O cover, and computer base. Then peel off the keyboard connector from the battery, lift the battery out using the alignment post. To install, place the new battery on the palm rest, adhere the keyboard connector back, and reassemble in reverse order.
What should I do if my laptop won't turn on?
First, hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual charge. Then check the battery status light (solid amber = low battery, user-defined color = AC connected). If still no power, try reseating the battery cable and ensure the AC adapter is working. If persists, run diagnostics by pressing F12 at boot and select ePSA.
How do I clear CMOS settings?
Remove the base cover, wireless card, SSD, rear-I/O cover, computer base, battery, and coin-cell battery. Wait one minute. Then reinstall the coin-cell battery and reassemble. This resets BIOS to default.
Can I upgrade the wireless card?
Yes. Remove the base cover, then disconnect the antenna cables, remove the screw and bracket, and slide out the old card. Insert the new card at an angle, connect the antenna cables (black=aux, white=main), replace the bracket and screw. Ensure the card is compatible with Dell systems.
How do I enter the BIOS setup?
Restart the computer and press F2 repeatedly when the Dell logo appears. From BIOS you can configure system settings, enable virtualization, set boot order, etc. To access the one-time boot menu, press F12.
What do the diagnostic light patterns mean?
The power button LED blinks red and blue in patterns. For example, 2 blinks red then 3 blue (2,3) indicates no memory detected. Common patterns: 2,1 = CPU failure; 2,2 = system board/BIOS failure; 2,3 = no RAM; 2,4 = RAM failure; 3,1 = CMOS battery failure. See manual for full list.
Is the Alienware 13 R3 keyboard replaceable?
Yes. You must remove the base cover, internal components (SSD, wireless, memory, etc.), system board, speakers, power-button board, and then remove 8 screws securing the keyboard bracket. Pry the bracket off, then lift the keyboard from the tabs. Install new keyboard by inserting tabs and snapping bracket in place.
Where can I find the latest BIOS update?
Go to www.dell.com/support, enter your Service Tag, select 'Drivers & downloads', choose your OS, expand BIOS category, download the latest version, and run the executable. Update your BIOS to fix issues or enable new features.

Safety instructions

Use the following safety guidelines to protect your computer from potential damage and ensure your personal safety.

DELL Alienware 13 R3 - Safety instructions - 1

WARNING: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with your computer. For more safety best practices, see the Regulatory Compliance home page at www.dell.com/regulatory_compliance.

WARNING: Disconnect all power sources before opening the computer cover or panels. After you finish working inside the computer, replace all covers, panels, and screws before connecting to the electrical outlet.
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the computer, ensure that the work surface is flat and clean.
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the components and cards, handle them by their edges, and avoid touching pins and contacts.
CAUTION: You should only perform troubleshooting and repairs as authorized or directed by the Dell technical assistance team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. See the safety instructions that shipped with the product or at www.dell.com/regulatory_compliance.
CAUTION: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could harm internal components.
CAUTION: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs or thumb-screws that you must disengage before disconnecting the cable. When disconnecting cables, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. When connecting cables, ensure that the ports and connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.
CAUTION: Press and eject any installed card from the media-card reader.

The procedures in this document may require the following tools:
