Frequently Asked Questions - SHIR 12 A1 SILVERCREST

How do I charge the headset battery?
Place the headset on the base with the SilverCrest logo facing forward. The base must be connected to mains power via the supplied charger. The power LED on the base lights orange during charging and turns green when fully charged. Charging takes approximately 3.5 hours.
What is the range of the infrared transmission?
The range is up to 12 meters with direct visual contact between the base and headset. Objects or persons between them can interfere with the signal.
Why do I hear sound only in one ear?
Check the audio cable connection to the base. Also ensure the stereo/mono switch on the base is set correctly. If set to 'stereo', some signals may be mono. Switch to 'mono' to hear the same audio in both ears.
How can I improve speech intelligibility?
Use the treble control on the base: turn it anticlockwise towards 'MAX' to boost high frequencies. Also enable the compression switch to amplify faint sounds, which can make speech clearer.
Does the headset switch off automatically?
Yes, if no audio signal is received for about 210 seconds, the headset powers off to save battery. Press the on/off button to resume playback.
Can I use this device with a TV that has a SCART or RCA output?
Yes, the package includes a TV SCART adapter and an RCA jack adapter. Connect the audio cable to the base and use the appropriate adapter to connect to your TV or audio source.
What should I do if there is no reception?
Check that the mains charger is plugged in and connected to the base. Verify the audio cable is securely connected to both the audio source and the base. Also ensure the headset is switched on and within range.
How do I clean the ear pads?
Remove the ear pads from the earpieces. Clean them with a mild detergent and lukewarm water. Let them dry completely before reattaching. Spare ear pads are included.
Is this device suitable for people with hearing aids or pacemakers?
The headset produces permanent magnetic fields. Keep at least 10 cm distance from pacemakers or ICDs. It is not a medical device; consult your doctor for specific advice.

Switch on the headset (A) with the on/off button (15).

SILVERCREST SHIR 12 A1 - First use - 1

Health risks due to high volume

Take care when using a headset. Listening at high volume for prolonged periods of time can damage your hearing. Before putting on the headset (A), set the volume to the lowest level.

The playback volume is also influenced by the volume set on the audio source. First, set the volume on the audio source to a low or medium level. It can be increased later if necessary.

Put on the headset (A).

Putting on the headset

Note the markings L (left) and R (right) to put on the headset (A) correctly. The headset (A) is on correctly if the on/off button (15) and balance control (5) are pointing towards your body.

L ON/OFF 0 R L R

As soon as the base (E) receives an audio signal, it is transmitted via an infrared signal to the headset (A).

It is imperative that there is visual contact between the base (E) and the headset (A). First, set the volume on your audio source to a pleasant level.

Playback settings

You have several options for adjusting the sound settings to suit your needs perfectly. When you have put on the headset (A) and playback is in progress, make the following settings to it in order to adjust the IR hearing amplifier perfectly to your hearing.

It makes sense to proceed in the sequence described below:

Settings on the headset

Volume

Adjust the playback volume according to your needs by turning the volume control (3). Set the volume to the lowest level before putting on the headset (A). When you have put on the headset (A) and playback is in progress, you then adjust the volume in order to find the setting that suits you best.

Balance

You can adjust the volume balance between the right and left ear using the balance control (5). This may be useful if your hearing is different in each ear and you thus require a higher volume for one ear. When you have put on the headset (A) and playback is in progress, you then adjust this control in order to find the setting that suits you best.

Settings on the base

Stereo/mono switch

If you hear the sound only in one ear despite the correct balance setting, turn the stereo/mono switch (9) to the "mono" position. The same audio signal is played back left and right with this setting.

In the "stereo" position, audio signals may be different left and right to represent surround sound.

Example: In a film, you see a dog barking on the left side. The barking of the dog would be mainly audible in the left ear at the "stereo" setting. At the "mono" setting, you hear the dog barking equally in both ears.

When you have put on the headset (A) and playback is in progress, you then adjust this control in order to find the setting that suits you best.

Compression

You can switch on the compression with the compression switch (11). When you do so, faint sounds are accentuated more during playback than loud sounds. This function is particularly useful for people with a hearing impairment because it is primarily faint sounds that they usually fail to hear as a result. The intelligibility of speech can be optimised in particular. When you have put on the headset (A) and playback is in progress, you then adjust this control in order to find the setting that suits you best.

Treble boost

You can achieve further improvement in speech intelligibility with the treble control (10). The trebles of the audio playback can be continuously boosted as a result. When you have put on the headset (A) and playback is in progress, you then adjust this control in order to find the setting that suits you best. To amplify high tones, turn the control anti-clockwise towards the "MAX" marking.

Switching off the headset

You can switch off the headset (A) at any time by pressing the on/off button (15). If the headset (A) does not receive any audio signal for about 210 seconds, it switches itself off in order to save the built-in battery.

You must press the on/off button (15) again to resume playback.

SILVERCREST SHIR 12 A1 - Switching off the headset - 1

When the headset (A) is not in use, it should be stored in the base (E) if possible. Thus you know where to find it and the battery is always charged.

Cleaning / replacing ear pads

If necessary, you can clean the ear pads with a mild detergent and lukewarm water.

2 pairs of replacement ear pads (F) are also supplied with the device.

Proceed as follows:

First, remove the ear pads (1) to be cleaned or replaced from the headset earpieces (2) and then attach cleaned or new ear pads.

  • Check whether the mains charger plug is correctly inserted into the DC-IN socket (12) of the base (E).
  • Check whether the audio cable is correctly inserted into the audio source and the base (E).

Poor reception

  • Plasma screens emit an infrared signal which may have a negative impact on the transmission quality. Install the base (E) as far as possible from the plasma screen.
    • The distance between the headset (A) and the base (E) is too great. Reduce the distance.
    • There are objects between the base (E) and the headset (A).
  • The built-in battery is almost empty. Charge the battery.

Sound only in one ear

  • Check whether the 3.5mm jack plug of the audio cable (C) is correctly inserted into the base (E).
  • Check the setting of the stereo/mono switch (9).

Noise

• Make sure that there is visual contact between the base (E) and the headset (A).
