Frequently Asked Questions - KX-HNS103EX PANASONIC

How do I replace the batteries in my Panasonic KX-HNS103EX?
Open the battery compartment cover, remove old batteries, and insert two new AA alkaline batteries observing correct polarity. The sensor uses batteries for power, so replacing them regularly ensures proper operation.
What is the detection range of the motion sensor?
The KX-HNS103EX has a detection range of up to 8 meters and a 120-degree detection angle, making it suitable for monitoring large indoor areas.
How do I pair the sensor with my Panasonic Smart Home System?
Follow the instructions in the hub's manual. Typically, you put the hub into pairing mode, then press and hold the sensor's button for 3 seconds until the LED flashes. The hub will confirm pairing.
Can I use the KX-HNS103EX outdoors?
No, the sensor is designed for indoor use only. Operating temperature range is -10°C to 50°C, but it is not weatherproof. Exposure to rain or direct sunlight may damage it.
What does the LED indicator mean?
A steady red LED may indicate detection or low battery. A flashing LED during pairing mode confirms the sensor is in discovery mode. Refer to the manual for specific patterns.
How do I reset the sensor to factory defaults?
Press and hold the pairing button for 10 seconds until the LED stops flashing. This clears all pairings and restores default settings.
What should I do if the sensor stops working?
Check the batteries first. Replace them if low. Ensure the sensor is within range of the hub (typically 50-100 meters indoors) and that no large metal objects obstruct the signal. Reset and re-pair if necessary.
Can the sensor be mounted on a ceiling?
Yes, the sensor can be wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted using the included bracket. Ensure the mounting surface is secure and the sensor is positioned for optimal coverage.
Is the KX-HNS103EX compatible with other home automation systems?
The sensor uses Panasonic's proprietary DECT ULE protocol and is designed to work exclusively with the Panasonic Smart Home System hub. It is not compatible with other systems like Zigbee or Z-Wave.
How often should I clean the sensor?
Clean the sensor lens every few months with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and maintain detection accuracy. Do not use water or cleaning agents.

Setup

Touching the metal probes with your hand may cause a water leak to be detected. This is not a defect.

Install the probe unit so that the metal probes are horizontal. A water leak can only be detected if water touches both of the metal probes; if water touches only one of the probes, a water leak will not be detected.

Correct installation Incorrect installation
Metal probes are horizontal to the floorPANASONIC KX-HNS103EX - Setup - 1Metal probes are not horizontal to the floorPANASONIC KX-HNS103EX - Setup - 2

Installation location

Install the water leak sensor in a basement, kitchen, utility room, or anywhere you want to detect a water leak. Common installation examples include near a washing machine, hot water heater, or a location where a water leak has occurred in the past.

Note:

Install the probe unit so that its metal probes are about 1 mm above the floor. If the probes touch the floor, the sensor may make false detections. If the probes are too far from the floor, water leaks can only be detected after the leaked water has become deep enough to touch the probes.

Setup

Install the main unit 1 m or higher above the floor. The main unit is not waterproof; if it becomes wet, the sensor may become damaged and water leaks will not be detected properly.
