Frequently Asked Questions - Fold & Go 760 UltraLite

How do I charge the battery on the Fold & Go 760?
You can charge the battery either on or off the vehicle. Connect the charger to the charging port on the battery pack (left side) or to the underside of the joystick controller. Plug the charger into a wall outlet. The LED on the charger is red while charging and turns green when fully charged. Note: The battery cannot be charged while connected to the vehicle if using the pack port; it must be disconnected.
How do I disassemble the power chair for transport?
Turn off the controller and battery switch. Unlatch and remove the battery pack. Disconnect the controller wiring harness under the seat. Release the seat frame latch and lift the seat away. The seatback and frame fold flat for storage. Reassembly is the reverse steps.
How do I lock the wheelchair to prevent unauthorized use?
With the controller on, press and hold the On/Off button until you hear a beep (about 1 second). Release, then push the joystick forward until a second beep, then backward until a third beep. Release – a longer beep indicates the chair is locked. To unlock, press On/Off (speed indicator flashes), push joystick forward then backward, each followed by a beep; a longer beep confirms unlock.
Can I adjust the armrests?
Yes. Loosen the adjustment knobs on the armrest brackets, slide the armrest to the desired width, then tighten the knobs. The armrests also fold down for easier entry/exit by lifting the rear and lowering them.
How do I engage freewheel mode to push the chair manually?
Turn the controller off. Locate the brake release levers on each drivetrain (near the motors). Push both levers upward to disengage the brakes. The chair can now be pushed. Warning: Never sit in the chair when in freewheel mode on an incline.
What should I do if the power chair does not move?
First, check that the charger is unplugged (vehicle won't operate while charging). Ensure the controller and battery switch are on. Check the battery level indicator – if red, recharge. Reset the circuit breaker on the battery pack if tripped. Verify controller connections under the seat. Also check if the chair is locked (speed indicator flashing). Refer to the troubleshooting guide in the manual for diagnostic LED codes.
Can the Fold & Go 760 be taken on an airplane?
Yes, the batteries (sealed lead-acid or gel) are FAA approved. Call the airline at least 24 hours in advance. They may require disassembly or storage in the cargo hold. Check the chair in at the gate if possible. After landing, test the unit before leaving the airport.
How do I maintain the wheelchair?
Clean seat upholstery monthly with mild soap and a damp cloth. Check brakes weekly: you should not be able to push the chair when off. Inspect tires weekly for wear and cuts; if pneumatic, maintain 35–40 psi monthly. Clean the frame yearly with auto polish. Keep battery contacts clean and store in a dry place.
What safety precautions should I follow on inclines?
Always drive straight up or down, never across or turn on an incline. Lean forward for stability. If you stop on an incline, do not try to continue; back down slowly at the lowest speed setting. Never back down an incline or turn off power while moving. The maximum safe incline is 6°, and the absolute maximum is 10°.
How long does the battery last and how to extend its life?
Range is about 9 miles (14 km) on a full charge, but varies with rider weight, terrain, temperature, and driving style. Battery life typically ranges from 12 to 24 months depending on usage. To extend life, keep the battery fully charged when not in use, avoid deep discharges, and store in a cool, dry place. Do not charge a frozen battery.

Important Information Regarding Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)

It is very important that you read this information regarding the possible effects of electromagnetic interference (EMI) on your power chair.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) refers to the effects that outside sources of electromagnetic energy (radio and television broadcasts, CB radios, garage door openers, cellular telephones, etc.) might have on the control systems of your power wheel chair. The interference from these sources could cause the power chair to release its brakes, move by itself, or to move in an unintended direction. EMI could also result in permanent damage to the control system.

The sources of electromagnetic energy can be broadly classified into three types:

  • Hand held short-range portable transceivers. These are transmitter/receivers with the antenna mounted directly on the unit. Examples include: citizen band (CB) radios, "walkie-talkies", security, fire and police transceivers, cellular telephones, and devices that transmit signals even when not in use.
  • Medium range mobile transceivers. These usually have the antenna mounted outside of a vehicle or building. Examples include police, fire, ambulance and taxi transceivers.
  • Long range transmitters and receivers. These usually have the antenna mounted on a tower. Examples include commercial radio and television broadcasts and amateur (HAM) radios.

Other types of hand-held devices like cordless phones, laptop computers, AM/FM radios, and small appliances like hair dryers or electric shavers may also generate electromagnetic energy, but it is such a small amount that, as far as we know, no EMI problems should occur with these devices.

The intensity of interference from electromagnetic energy is measured in volts per meter (v/m), which refers to the strength of the electrical source (voltage) as it relates to the distance away from the object being considered (in meters). Resistance of a PowerChair to a certain EMI intensity is commonly called its “immunity level”. 20 volts/meter is a generally achievable and useful immunity level against interference from radio wave sources (the higher the immunity level, the greater the protection).

Your PowerChair has been tested and found to meet the required immunity level for Electromagnetic Interference (20 v/m).

WARNING!

Even with an immunity level of 20 volts/meter, certain precautions must be followed to ensure that your PowerChair will not be affected by outside electromagnetic sources:

  • Do not operate hand-held transceivers such as citizen band (CB) radios or turn on powered communication devices such as cellular phones while the power chair is turned on.
  • Be aware of nearby transmitters, such as radio and television stations, and avoid coming close to them.

  • If an unintended movement should occur while operating the PowerChair, turn the PowerChair "off" as soon as it is safe to do so.

  • Be aware that if you do operate any electrically powered accessories, radios, cellular phones, or other devices, that your power chair may become more susceptible to interference from outside electromagnetic sources.
  • Report all incidents of unintended movement or unexpected brake releases to Electric Mobility's Customer Service Department.

Controls

The joystick assembly mounted on the armrest provides all major operating controls and displays for the Model 760. Controls are shown in Figure 2 and described in the following.

Battery Level Indicator

Indicates the charge level of your batteries. The three green lamps, when lit, indicate fully charged batteries, four amber lamps indicate a caution level and three red lamps indicate the batteries must be charged as soon as possible.

The Battery Level Indicator lamps are also used as a Diagnostic Indicator when troubleshooting problems with the vehicle (see "Troubleshooting" on page 34).

Speed Indicator

Indicates selected maximum speed of the power chair, as selected by the Speed Increase/Decrease controls (see following). Faster speeds are indicated by the number of lamps lit (total, 5).

UltraLite Fold & Go 760 - Speed Indicator - 1

Figure 2 — Controller

On/Off Switch

The on/off switch is located on top of the controller in front of the joystick. Pressing the switch turns the controller on and pressing it again turns the controller off. The battery level indicator lamps will light up when the controller is "On."

The On/Off switch is also used to "lock" the power chair to prevent unauthorized use (see "Locking and Unlocking" on page 24).

Horn

Pressing the horn button sounds the horn. Releasing the horn button deactivates the horn. The horn is useful to warn people or animals that you are coming towards them. You may also find it helpful to use it when rounding blind corners or going in reverse.

Speed Increase/Decrease

Selects the desired maximum speed of the vehicle. Settings are shown on the Speed Indicator (see previous).

Charger/Programmer Connection

The Controller includes a Charger/Programmer Connection receptacle located on the underside of the unit. This connection can be used as an alternative charger connection if connecting to the Battery Pack is inconvenient.

Joystick Operation

Use the following to learn how to control your power chair from the joystick of the controls.

Going Forward/Backward

Pushing the joystick forward will move the power chair forward and pushing it backward will move backward. Release all pressure on the joystick to bring the unit to a complete stop. Find a level open area with no obstructions and try moving the unit forward and backward only. See how the unit stops when you release the joystick.

Turning Left/Right

Pushing the joystick to the right will pivot the unit around to the right, while pushing the joystick to the left pivots the unit around to the left. Try turning to the right and left and see how the unit comes to a complete stop when you release the joystick. Moving the joystick in a combined way (forward or backward and right or left) will move the unit in that combined direction.

Braking

Whenever the joystick is moved from the neutral (center) position, the electromagnetic brake will automatically release and allow the power chair to move. When the joystick is returned to the neutral position, the power chair will decelerate and come to a complete stop. If your power chair ever moves in an unexpected manner, immediately switch the On/Off button to "OFF".

Initial Setup

Prior to using your Fold & Go, use the following to initially setup the vehicle for proper use and safe, comfortable operation. Initial setup involves installing the seat and Battery Pack. If the vehicle is delivered with the seat and Battery Pack installed, you can skip this section and proceed with how to charge the battery before riding.

If you need assistance lifting weights, consider asking Electric Mobility's Customer Service Department or your authorized service center about the Power Trunk Lift. This device will assist you in transporting your Fold & Go by transferring these components in and out of your trunk with very little effort. (See "Specifications" for more information on weights).

By Airplane — To transport your power chair on an airplane, we recommend that you call your airline at least 24 hours in advance to ensure that they are able to handle your vehicle properly. Ask your airline whether they will need to disassemble the Fold & Go or whether they plan to load and store it on the plane without disassembly. Ask specifically where and with whom you should drop the unit off and where and with whom you should retrieve it at your destination. We also recommend, when possible, to check your vehicle in at the gate.

Note: Only sealed lead-acid or sealed gel batteries are Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) approved for air travel.

Remember to bring this manual with you as a reference on your trip. Your manual will assist you in disassembling and re-assembling your vehicle.

Prior to leaving the airport, remember to test the unit when first getting on it. Direct any questions to the airline personnel if the unit does not work as it did prior to transportation.

If traveling outside of the United States, you may require a different charger or an adapter for your present charger. Customer Service or your authorized service center can help you answer these questions and supply you with the charger or adapter you require.

By Bus, Van or Truck without Disassembly — If transporting your power chair fully assembled in a van, bus, or truck, secure it to the floor using a four point tie-down system.

The operator should then be seated in an approved seat somewhere in the transporting vehicle.

WARNING!

This vehicle does not meet Federal Safety Standards for motor vehicle seating. Do not sit, nor permit anyone else to sit, in the seat of during transportation in a motor vehicle as this poses a significant risk of bodily injury or even death.
