VERY IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR THE INSTALLATION AND OPERATION IN NEWER VEHICLES!
In vehicles with a newer year of manufacturing (since approx. 2002), normally computer controlled diagnosis and controlling systems are applied - like CAN-BUS or MOST-BUS interfaces. By the installation of a car audio amplifier a new appliance will be added to the 12V onboard electrical system, which may cause under several circumstances error messages or may interrupt this factory made diagnosis system, as a result of high stress peaks and a higher power consumption. Thus to this, depending on model and manufacturer, the driving safety or important security systems like airbags, ESC or others could be interrupted.
If you plan to operate the amplifier in a vehicle like described above, please follow these instructions:
- Admit the installation only by a skilled specialist, best by a service company, which is specialized on maintenance and repairing your vehicle and which is familiar with the electrical on-board system of the vehicle.
- After the installation, order by any means a computer based diagnosis of the on-board system by your service company to detect possible malfunctions or error messages.
- If the on-board system is interrupted by the installation of the amplifier, in-between installed power capacitors can stabilize the electrical on-board system and ensure a proper and stable operation.
- The best solution is the integration of an additional second 12 V electrical system for the complete sound system, which can be operated independently via a own battery supply.

PLEASE ATTEND THE FOLLOWING ADVICES BEFORE THE FIRST OPERATION!
THE PURCHASED DEVICE IS ONLY SUITABLE FOR AN OPERATION WITH A 12V ON-BOARD ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF A VEHICLE. Otherwise fire hazard, risk of injury and electric shock consists.
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANY OPERATION OF THE SOUNDSYSTEM, WHICH DISTRACT YOU FROM A SAFE DRIVING. Do not make any procedures, which demand a longer attention. Perform these operations not until you have stopped the vehicle on a safe place. Otherwise the risk of accident consists.
ADJUST THE SOUND VOLUME TO AN APPROPRIATE LEVEL, THAT YOU ARE STILL ABLE TO HEAR EXTERIOR NOISES WHILE DRIVING. High performance sound systems in vehicles may generate the acoustic pressure of a live concert. The permanent listening to extrem loud music may cause the loss of your hearing abilities. The hearing of extreme loud music while driving may derogate your cognition of warning signals in the traffic. In the interests of the common safeness, we suggest to drive with a lower sound volume. Otherwise the risk of accident consists.
DO NOT COVER COOLING VENTS AND HEATSINKS. Otherwise this may cause heat accumulation in the device and fire hazard consists.
DO NOT OPEN THE DEVICE. Otherwise fire hazard, risk of injury and electric shock consists. Also this may cause a loss of the warranty.
REPLACE FUSES ONLY WITH FUSE WITH THE SAME RATING. Otherwise fire hazard and risk of electric shock consists.
DO NOT USE THE DEVICE ANY LONGER, IF A MALFUNCTION, WHICH REMAINS UNREMEDIED. Attend in this case the chapter TROUBLE SHOOTING. Otherwise risk of injury and the damage of the device consists. Commit the device to an authorized retailer.
THE INSTALLATION OF A POWER CAPACITOR WITH SUFFICIENT CAPACITY IS RECOMMENDED. High performance amplifiers cause high potential voltage drops and need a high power consumption at a high volume level. To relieve the vehicle's on-board system, it is recommended to install a power capacitor between the battery and the device which works as buffer. Consult your car audio retailer for the appropriate capacity.
INTERCONNECTION AND INSTALLATION SHOULD BE ACCOMPLISHED BY SKILLED STAFF ONLY. The interconnection and installation of this device demands technical aptitude and experience. For your own safness, commit the interconnexion and installation to your car audio retailer, where you have purchased the device.
DISCONNECT THE GROUND CONNECTION FROM THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY BEFORE INSTALLATION. Before you start with the installation of the sound system, disconnect by any means the ground supply wire from the battery, to avoid any risk of electric shock and short circuits.
CHOOSE A APPROPRIATE LOCATION FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE DEVICE. Look for a appropriate location for the device, which ensures a sufficient air circulation. The best places are spare wheel cavities, and open spaces in the trunk area. Less suitable are storage spaces behind the side coverings or under the car seats.
DO NOT INSTALL THE DEVICE AT LOCATIONS, WHERE IT WILL BE EXPOSED TO HIGH HUMIDITY AND DUST. Install the device at a location, where it will be protected from high humidity and dust. If humidity and dust attain inside the device, malfunctions may be caused.
MOUNT THE DEVICE AND OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE SOUND SYSTEM SUFFICIENTLY. Otherwise the device and components may get loose and act as dangerous objects, which could cause serious harm and damages in the passenger room.
ATTEND NOT TO DAMAGE COMPONENTS, WIRES AND CABLES OF THE VEHICLE WHEN YOU DRILL THE MOUNTING HOLES. If you drill the mounting holes for the installation into the vehicle's chassis, ensure by any means, not to damage, block or tangent the fuel pipe, the gas tank, other wires or electrical cables.
ENSURE CORRECT CONNECTION OF ALL TERMINALS. Faulty connections may could cause fire hazard and lead to damages of the device.
DO NOT INSTALL AUDIO CABLES AND POWER SUPPLY WIRES TOGETHER. Attend while installation not to lead the audio cables between the headunit and the amplifier together with the power supply wires on the same side of the vehicle. The best is a areal separated installation in the left and right cable channel of the vehicle. Therewith a overlap of interferences on the audio signal will be avoided. This stands also for the equipped bass-remote wire, which should be installed not together with the power supply wires, but rather with the audio signal cables.
ENSURE THAT CABLES MAY NOT CAUGHT UP IN CLOSE-BY OBJECTS. Install all the wires and cables like described on the following pages, therewith these may not hinder the driver. Cables and wires which are installed close-by the steering wheel, gear lever or the brake pedal, may caught up and cause highly dangerous situations.
DO NOT SPLICE ELECTRICAL WIRES. The electrical wires should not be bared, to provide power supply to other devices. Otherwise the load capacity of the wire may get overloaded. Use therefor a appropriate distribution block. Otherwise fire hazard and risk of electric shock consists.
DO NOT USE BOLTS AND SCREW NUTS OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM AS GROUND POINT. Never use for the installation or the ground point bolts and screw-nuts of the brake system, steering system or other security-relevant components. Otherwise fire hazard consists or the driving safety will be derogated.
ENSURE NOT TO BEND OR SQUEEZE CABLES AND WIRES BY SHARP OBJECTS. Do not install cables and wires not close-by movable objects like the seat rail or may be bended or harmed by sharp and barbed edges. If you lead a wire or cable through the hole in a metal sheet, protect the insulation with a rubber grommet.
KEEP AWAY SMALL PARTS AND JACKS FROM CHILDREN. If objects like these will be swallowed, a risk of serious injuries consists. Consult promptly a medical doctor, if a child swallowed a small object.
General Installation Notes
The amplifier is generally mounted in the rear trunk area but can be mounted in any convenient area such as beneath a seat. Please be sure to locate this unit where you have reasonable air circulation and protection from moisture. When considering the mounting location you should minimize the length of the power and speaker leads. Minimizing both leads will yield a more reliable installation. It is also important to ensure that the heat sink fins are not against a panel or a surface, preventing air circulation. Do not install the amplifier on a subwoofer box or on vibrating parts of the vehicle, the vibrations can cause damage to the amplifier. Do not install the amplifier on the hattrack of your vehicle, otherwise the surface get discolored by the solar exposure.

Amplifier Installation
Mark the location for the mounting screw holes by using the amplifier as a template. Drill holes at the marked locations and firmly fasten the amplifier in place with the mounting screws supplied in the accessory kit.
Before drilling or cutting any holes, investigate the layout of your automobile thoroughly: Take care when working near the gas lines or hydraulic lines and electrical wiring.
Electrical Connections
Ground (GND)
This wire is the electrical ground and must be fastened securely to the vehicle's chassis. The best method is to use a threading sheet metal screw since the threads cut into bare metal. Ensure that all paint or other insulation is removed from around the hole area, and using self tapping screw, securely affix the bare wire ends to the vehicle chassis. Use as short a piece of cable as possible - use the same gauge as was used for the +12V cable. Make sure that the connection is safe, a loose connection may result in amplifier noise and fault condition.
Remote (REM)
Many radios or other music sources have an output terminal for connection of the remote turn-on of the power amplifier. If a radio doesn't have a remote turn-on feature, then you can use the antenna relay wire, which activates the antenna motor. Please note, if the power antenna retracts when the radio is operating, then you cannot use the antenna relay wire to operate the remote turn-on.
Battery Connection (+12V)
This wire is usually connected directly to the positive battery terminal. Ensure that the + power supply wire is fused via an assigned fuse in line with the + power supply wire. Please use a sufficient gauge for the installed amplifiers (16-25 mm ^2 ). As additional fuse a external in-line fuse (not enclosed) in the +12V cable is suggested. This Fuse must be installed close-by the vehicle's battery.
Fuses
The integrated amplifier fuses protect the units from short circuit and overload.

Functions and Controllers: MXB280 / MXB2175
FILTER - selector
Selects the desired operation mode of the amplifier.
Position HIGH PASS:
Highpass-Filter - The frequency will be limited to below, adjustable by the HIGH PASS controller.
Position FLAT:
A Full Range Signal (Complete Frequency Range) without filtering will be amplified.
Position LOW PASS:
Lowpass-Filter - The frequency will be limited to above, adjustable by the LOW PASS controller.
HIGH PASS - controller
Adjusts the cut-off frequency of the highpass filter. The range is adjustable from 60Hz to 1.2 kHz.
LOW PASS - controller
Adjusts the cut-off frequency of the lowpass filter. The range is adjustable from 40Hz to 150Hz.

2-Channel Stereo-Mode

- Connect the speakers with the speaker outputs (SPEAKERS/ + L - and + R -) of the amplifier by using appropriate cables.
- Ensure that the total speaker impedance load is not lower than 2 Ohms per channel.
- Too low speaker loads result in too high heat development and may cause the amplifier run into protection.
REFERENCE NOTE: Ensure always correct polarity for all connections.
Don't connect any speaker cables to the vehicle's ground.
FILTER - selector
- If larger speakers (> ∅20 cm) are used, the position FLAT is recommended. A fullrange signal will be provided to the speakers.
- For all smaller speakers ( 8.7cm - 16cm ) the position HIGH PASS is recommended, thereby the lower frequencies will eliminated in the audiosignal. Set the cut-off frequency between 60Hz - 150Hz, depending of the size of the installed speakers.
The cut-off frequency is adjustable with the HIGH PASS controller. In this configuration, the LOW PASS - controller is not used.
INPUT LEVEL - controller
- Turn the INPUT LEVEL controller on the amplifier to 4V position.
- Turn the head unit volume controller to about 80-90% of its full setting.
- Turn the INPUT LEVEL controller clockwise until you hear some distortion.
- Then turn back the INPUT LEVEL controller slightly until you can hear clean sound.
REFERENCE NOTE: If this controller is cranked up too high, the amplifier produce distortions, which may cause a "creeping death" of the amplifier (or the speakers). Usually this is called "Clipping".
BASS BOOST - controller
- Turn the BASS BOOST controller into "0dB" - position.

REFERENCE NOTE: Never use the HI INPUTS and the RCA Inputs at the same time.

Subwoofer-Mode mono bridged

Set the cut-off frequency between 60Hz - 100Hz, depending on the size of the installed subwoofer. The cut-off frequency is adjustable with the LOW PASS - controller. In this configuration the HIGH PASS - controller is not used.

- Turn the INPUT LEVEL - controller on the amplifier to 5V position.
- Turn the head unit volume controller to about 80 - 90% of its full setting.
- Turn the INPUT LEVEL - controller clockwise until you hear some distortion.

- The BASS BOOST - controller adjusts the bass boost from 0db to +12dB. Caution! Please use the Bass Boost carefully.

Functions and Controllers: MXB480 / MXB4125
HI INPUT - inputs for channel 1/2 & 3/4
The High level Inputs are suitable for connecting the loudspeaker wires of the head unit, if the head unit is not equipped with pre-amplifier RCA line outputs.
Never use the HI INPUTS and the RCA Inputs at the same time.
OUTPUT - jacks
These outputs provide a full range line output signal to drive additional amplifiers.
POWER - LED
Indicates that the amplifier is in operation.
INPUT SELECT
Select here the input signal (2- or 4-Channel input).
BASS BOOST - controller
Adjust the bass boost from 0dB up to 12dB per channel pair.
HIGH PASS - controller channel 1/2 & 3/4
Adjusts the cut-off frequency of the highpass filter. The range is adjustable from 60Hz to 1.2 kHz.
LOW PASS - controller channel 1/2 & 3/4
Adjusts the cut-off frequency of the lowpass filter. The range is adjustable from 40Hz to 150Hz.
INPUT LEVEL - controller
Adjusts the Input Sensitivity from 0.2 to 4 Volts.
INPUT - jacks for channel 1/2 & 3/4
Connect the RCA Inputs with the line outputs of the headunit.
FILTER - selector channel 1/2 & 3/4

4-Channel Stereo-Mode

INPUT SELECT - switch
- If your head units only provides 2 output channels, select here the position 2CH.
FILTER - selector channel 1/2 & 3/4
- If larger speakers (> ∅20 cm) are used, the FLAT position is recommended. A fullrange signal will be provided to the speakers.
- For all smaller speakers ( 8.7cm - 16cm ) the Position HIGH PASS is recommended, thereby the lower frequencies will eliminated in the audiosignal. Set the cut-off frequency between 60Hz - 1a50Hz , depending of the size of the installed speakers.
The cut-off frequency is adjustable with the HIGH PASS controller. In this configuration the LOW PASS - controller is not used.
INPUT LEVEL - controller channel 1/2 & 3/4
- Turn the INPUT LEVEL controller on the amplifier to 4V position.
- Turn the head unit volume controller to about 80 - 90% of its full setting.
- Turn the INPUT LEVEL controller clockwise until you hear some distortion.
- Then turn back the INPUT LEVEL controller slightly until you can hear clean sound.
REFERENCE NOTE: If this controller is cranked up too high, the amplifier produce distortions, which may cause a "creeping death" of the amplifier (or the speakers). Usually this is called "Clipping".
BASS BOOST - controller channel 1/2 & 3/4
- Turn the BASS BOOST controller into "0dB" - position.

- Ensure that the total speaker impedance load is not lower than 2 Ohms channel on channel 1/2 and 4 Ohms on subwoofer channel 3/4.
- Too low speaker loads result in too high heat development and may cause the amplifier run into protection.
REFERENCE NOTE: Ensure always correct polarity for all connections.
Don't connect any speaker cables to the vehicle's ground.
INPUT SELECT - switch
- Select here the 4CH-Position.
FILTER - selector channel 1/2

- For all smaller speakers ( 8.7cm - 16cm ) the Position HIGH PASS is recommended, thereby the lower frequencies will eliminated in the audiosignal. Set the cut-off frequency between 60Hz - 150Hz , depending of the size of the installed speakers.
The cut-off frequency is adjustable with the HIGH PASS controller.
- In this configuration example the LOW PASS - controller is not used.
INPUT LEVEL - controller channel 1/2
- Turn the INPUT LEVEL controller on the amplifier to 4V position.
- Turn the head unit volume controller to about 80 - 90% of its full setting.
- Turn the INPUT LEVEL controller clockwise until you hear some distortion.
- Then turn back the INPUT LEVEL controller slightly until you can hear clean sound.
REFERENCE NOTE: If this controller is cranked up too high, the amplifier produce distortions, which may cause a “creeping death” of the amplifier (or the speakers). Usually this is called “Clipping”.
BASS BOOST - controller channel 1/2
- Turn the BASS BOOST controller into "0dB" - position.
FILTER - selector subwoofer channel 3/4
- In the Subwoofer-Mode mono bridged the FILTER - select must be in position LOW PASS, thereby the higher frequencies will be eliminated in the audiosignal. Set the cut-off frequency between 60Hz - 100Hz, depending on the size of the installed subwoofer. The cut-off frequency is adjustable with the LOW PASS - controller. In this configuration the HIGH PASS - controller is not used.

Trouble Shooting
System does not turn on
- Check all fuses.
- Check all connections.
- Measure the +12 volt and remote turn on voltages at the amplifier terminals. If these are non existent or low, take voltage measurements at fuse holders, distribution blocks, the head unit's +12 volt and remote leads to localize the problem.
Noise problems
- Check the speaker wiring.
- Speakers are damaged.
No Signal at Channels
- Set Balance and Fader from head unit on Zero-Position.
- Check wiring (Amplifier, Speakers).
- Speakers are damaged.
Hiss or white noise
- Speakers are overload.
- High levels of white noise usually occurs when amplifier level controls are turned up too high - readjust according to the procedures in section "Setting up systems after installation for best performance."
- Another major problem that can cause excessive hiss, is a noisy head unit - unplug the amplifier input RCA cables, and if the hiss level reduces, the source unit is at fault.
No Stereo-Sound or Low Output
- Check speaker wiring (-and+).
Amplifier Protection-Mode (red LED is illuminated)
- Speaker cables are shorted
- Inadequate cooling - relocate or remount to provide better natural airflow over the fins.
Driving high power levels into low impedances - back off on the volume control, and/or make sure you are not loading the amplifier with less than the recommended loudspeaker impedance.
- Make sure that the battery voltage, as measured at the amplifier's +12 volt and ground terminals, is 11 volts or more.
PROTECTION CIRCUIT
Your amplifier is equipped with a protection circuit, which avoids serious damages on the device and your vehicle's electrical system by shutting down the operation. The amplifier is in PROTECTION-Mode, if the red LED is lighting up. The amplifier usually tries to start again the operation immediatley, but if the problem is still existing, the red LED stays on red. The following problems may occurred:
Short Circuit Protection engaged: Check all speaker-, audio- and power supply connections for short circuits.
Thermal Protection engaged: After turning off it takes several minutes until the amplifier turns on again after cooling down.
In this case, ensure that the amplifier's heatsink have a sufficient cooling air. No obstruction should be within 2"/5cm of the amplifier heatsink on all sides and top. If extreme high outdoor temperatures are prevailed, the amplifier should not be used or should be cooled by external fans. If the thermal problems are still prevailed, check again the speaker impedance. Too low impedance may cause also a thermal problem.
Overload Protection engaged: Check again the speaker impedance. Too low impedance may cause overload problems.
Too low voltage (below 10 Volts) and insufficient power supply may cause overload problems of the amplifier. Check and improve the power supply.
Interferences
The reason for interferences are mostly the passed cables and wires. Especially the power and audio cables (RCA) of your sound system are vulnerable. Often these interferences are caused by electric generators or other electrical units (fuel pump, A/C etc.) of the car. The most of these problems can be prevented by a correct and careful wiring. Here are some courtesy notes:
- Use only double or triple shielded audio RCA cables for the connection between the amplifier and headunit.
- Do not lead the audio cables between the headunit and the amplifier together with the power supply wires on the same side of the vehicle. The best is a areal separated installation in the left and right cable channel of the vehicle. Therewith a overlap of interferences on the audio signal will be avoided. This stands also for the equipped bass-remote wire, which should be installed not together with the power supply wires, but rather with the audio signal cables.
- Avoid ground loops by connecting all ground connections in a starlike arrangement. The suitable ground center point is ascertainable by measuring of the voltage directly on the vehicle's battery by a multi-meter. You should measure the voltage with turned-on inginition (acc.) and with other turned-on power consumers (e.g. headlights, rear window defroster, etc.). Compare the measured value with the voltage of the ground point you have chosen for the installation and the positive pole (+12V) of the amplifier. If the voltage has just a little difference, you have found a suitable ground point. Otherwise you need to choose a other ground point.
- Use if possible only cables with added or soldered cable sockets or the like. Gold plated or high value nickel plated cable sockets are corrosionfree and own a very low contact resistance.
