Frequently Asked Questions - UM385BK UNIDEN

How to make a voice distress call on channel 16?
Press 16/9-TRI to select channel 16. Hold PUSH TO TALK and say clearly: 'MAYDAY - MAYDAY - MAYDAY, THIS IS [boat name], MAYDAY [boat name], position, nature of distress, assistance required, number of persons, vessel condition, description. End with 'I WILL BE LISTENING ON CHANNEL 16, THIS IS [boat name], OVER'. Release the button and listen. Repeat after 30 seconds if no response.
How to send an automatic distress call (DSC)?
Make sure your MMSI number is programmed. Lift the red cover and hold the DISTRESS key for 3 seconds. The radio transmits your position and nature of distress (selectable with channel keys). It repeats the call every few minutes until acknowledgment is received.
What is DSC and how does it work?
Digital Selective Calling (DSC) allows calling other stations with their MMSI number via channel 70. The radio transmits your MMSI and the desired voice channel. The other station accepts and both automatically switch to the voice channel. Used for individual, group, all ships calls, and automated distress calls.
How to program the MMSI number?
Press CALL-MENU, go to Setup then User MMSI. Use CHANNEL UP/DOWN to enter the 9 digits, confirm each digit with ENT-1W/25W. Confirm by selecting Yes. Note: the individual MMSI can only be entered once. The group number can be changed freely.
How to use scan mode?
First save channels to memory: tune to the channel, hold WX-MEM for 2 seconds (Memory icon appears). To start scan, hold CLR-SCAN. The radio scans the memorized channels in rapid succession. To exit scan mode, press PUSH TO TALK, CALL-MENU or WX-MEM.
What does triple or dual watch mean?
Triple watch checks channels 16 and 9 every 2 seconds while you are on another channel. Dual watch only checks channel 16. Activate by holding 16/9-TRI for 2 seconds. To switch between them, go to Setup > Dual/TriWatch.
How to receive NOAA weather alerts?
Press WX-MEM to enter weather mode. The radio monitors the last weather channel used. Enable weather alert watch in Setup > WX Alert Mode by selecting ON. In normal mode, it checks every 7 seconds. If an alert is detected, it sounds a tone and displays the alert type.
How to adjust transmit power (1W/25W)?
Hold the ENT-1W/25W key for 2 seconds to toggle between 1 W and 25 W. The corresponding icon appears. By default, channel 16 automatically switches to 25 W. Some channels (13, 67) are limited to 1 W. Reduce power to 1 W when near other stations.
How to connect a GPS receiver to the radio?
Connect the supplied accessory cable: GREEN wire to NMEA - output of GPS, YELLOW wire to NMEA + output. Connect the cable to the back of the radio. If connection is correct, the display shows GPS Data OK. The radio uses the data for automatic distress calls and position requests.
What are the available channels and their uses?
The radio covers USA, Canada and international marine VHF channels. Refer to the channel table on pages 43-46 of the manual. Main channels: 16 (distress and calling), 9 (secondary calling), 13 (bridge navigation), 70 (DSC). Weather channels are preprogrammed (WX01 to WX10).
