Frequently Asked Questions - pH 7 4-9 0 Test JBL

How to use the JBL pH 7.4-9.0 test?
Rinse both test tubes with the water to be analyzed. Fill them with 5 ml of water. Add 3 drops of reagent to one test tube and mix. Place the test tubes in the comparator (reagent side on the smooth side, control side in the notch). Move the comparator over the color chart until the colors match. Read the pH value at the notch.
Why is pH important in an aquarium?
pH must be stable for the well-being of aquatic organisms. Sudden changes are dangerous. In seawater, a pH of 8.2 is ideal. In a koi pond, between 7.5 and 8.5.
What to do if the pH is too low?
Lowering pH: in freshwater, use a CO2 supply (JBL PROFLORA) or JBL pH-minus. In ponds, increase carbonate hardness with JBL StabiloPond KH.
What to do if the pH is too high?
Raising pH: in seawater without invertebrates, add JBL pH-plus; with invertebrates, use JBL CalciuMarin or a calcium reactor. In freshwater, add JBL pH-plus or JBL AquaDur plus.
Which fish require alkaline pH?
Fish from Lake Malawi and Tanganyika, as well as koi carp, prefer a pH of 8 to 8.5. This test is specially designed for these species.
Does the test work in slightly tinted water?
Yes, thanks to a compensation process developed by JBL, the test remains reliable even in slightly colored water (e.g., after medical treatment).
How to maintain the test kit?
Rinse the test tubes before each use. Store the reagent in a cool, dark place. Reagent refills are available separately.
Is the reagent dangerous?
Yes, it is flammable (H226). Keep out of reach of children, avoid flames, wear gloves and eye protection. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly.
What is the shelf life of the test?
The shelf life of the reagent is usually indicated on the packaging. Store it in a cool, dry place. Use it before the expiration date.
Where to find refills for the JBL pH test?
Reagent refills are available in specialized aquarium stores or online. Refer to the JBL brand for compatible refills.

Achtung

The JBL pH Test Set 7.4 - 9.0 can be used for exact measurements and routine monitoring of the pH level in saltwater and slightly alkaline freshwater, as required by fish from Lake Malawi, as well as for koi and other garden pond fish for example. Using the compensation method specially developed by JBL, precise and reliable results can be obtained even in moderately discoloured water, e.g. during the treatment of diseases.

Why test pH levels?

The well-being of all water organisms depends to a large extent on the pH level being kept as constant as possible. In particular, sudden fluctuations should be avoided.

A pH level of 8.2 is considered best for marine organisms. In marine aquariums with invertebrates, the consumption of calcium bicarbonate (carbonate hardness) can lead to a drop in pH levels if a regular supply is not ensured. The carbonate hardness and the pH level serve as indicators.

In garden ponds the assimilation activity of green floating algae (also known as water bloom or green water) may drastically reduce carbonate hardness (calcium bicarbonate), dangerously increasing pH levels.

For the care of fish from slightly alkaline waters, such as Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika, this test enables the pH level required by any particular species to be precisely monitored. Levels of 8-8.5 are generally recommended. For more detailed information please refer to specialist literature.

For koi and other garden pond fish levels between 7 and 8.5 are considered most beneficial.

Note: High levels of nitrate reduce pH levels in fresh and salt water! Appropriate steps should be taken to keep the nitrate content as low as possible, e.g. regular partial changes of water!

Remedy in case of pH fluctuations:

Reducing pH levels:

Freshwater aquariums: When necessary, using the OJBL PROFLORA CO _2 system or (for freshwater only) JBL pH-Minus.

In garden ponds: Increase carbonate hardness and stabilise pH levels by adding JBL StabiloPond KH. As a long-term care measure to stabilize the carbonate hardness we recommend the regular use of StabiloPond Basis.

Increasing pH levels:

Marine aquarium: In saltwater stocked with fish only, add JBL pH-plus; for invertebrates, add JBL CalciuMarin or install a standard calcium reactor.

Freshwater aquarium: Add JBL pH-Plus or JBL AquaDur plus.

Garden pond (koi pond): An increase of pH is generally not required.

Instructions:

  1. Repeatedly rinse both test jars with the water to be tested.
  2. Use the enclosed syringe to fill each of the test jars with 5 ml of sample water.
  3. Add 3 drops of 7.4 - 9.0 reagent to one of the test jars and mix by shaking.
  4. Place both test jars into the comparator block: the jar with added reagent into the smooth end of the comparator block, the jar with the untreated test water (blank sample) into the notched end of the comparator block.
  5. Move the comparator block together with the jars backwards and forwards on the colour chart, until the colour of the sample treated with reagent matches the colour under the blank sample as closely as possible.
  6. Read the pH-value in the notch of the comparator.

Our tip for the environmentally-friendly users:

All reagents for JBL test sets are available from your retailer as reasonably-priced refill packs!
