Frequently Asked Questions - SLV-XF245SV SONY

How do I connect the video recorder to the television?
Disconnect the antenna cable from your television and connect it to AERIAL IN on the back of the recorder. Connect the AERIAL OUT jack of the recorder to the antenna input of the television using the supplied antenna cable. Plug in the power cord. For better quality, also use the supplied RCA audio/video cable by connecting the LINE OUT jacks of the recorder to the corresponding inputs on the television.
What should I do if the playback image is not clear?
First make sure the television is set to the video channel (between UHF 30 and 39). If the image remains blurry, adjust the RF CHANNEL screw on the back of the recorder with a screwdriver. You can also check that the TV SYSTEM switch is set to G or K according to your system. Finally, use the TRACKING buttons to fine-tune the image.
How do I set the color system?
The COLOR SYSTEM switch is on the front panel. In the AUTO position, the recorder detects the system automatically. If stripes appear, set it manually: PAL/MESECAM for a PAL or MESECAM cassette, NTSC for an NTSC cassette.
How do I play a tape recorded in NTSC?
Set the NTSC PB switch on the back according to your television system: ON PAL TV for a PAL TV (the picture will be converted), NTSC 4.43 or NTSC 3.58 depending on the format. Make sure COLOR SYSTEM is set to NTSC. Tracking adjustments may be necessary.
What should I do if the remote control does not work?
Check that you are pointing the remote control at the infrared sensor of the recorder. Replace the batteries with two new R6 (AA size) batteries. If the problem persists, move the remote control away from interfering light sources and clean the battery contacts.
How do I clean the video heads?
The recorder features automatic cleaning during each tape loading/unloading. If the picture remains snowy, use a Sony V-25CL cleaning cassette. Never use a commercial wet cleaning cassette, as it could damage the heads.
Can I record television programs?
No, this model does not have a built-in TV tuner. It can only record from an external source via the LINE IN jacks (for example, another VCR or a decoder). To record, insert a cassette with the protection tab intact, press REC then PAUSE to start.
How do I adjust the tracking?
During playback, use the TRACKING NORMAL/SLOW buttons (▼/▲) until you get the best picture. If distortion does not disappear, press TRACKING AUTO/MANUAL to return to automatic adjustment. The OPC (Optimal Picture Control) works automatically to improve quality.
What should I do if the tape ejects automatically when I press REC?
This means the record-protection tab has been removed. To record on this tape, cover the notch with a piece of adhesive tape. If you want to keep a recording, remove the tab after recording.
What types of tapes can I use?
This VCR plays and records only in SP (Standard Play) mode. Use quality VHS cassettes. Tapes recorded in LP or EP mode cannot be played back correctly. Tapes must be compatible with PAL, MESECAM or NTSC systems.

About OPC

OPC (Optimum Picture Control) automatically improves playback quality by adjusting the unit to the condition of the video heads and tape.

The OPC function automatically works on all types of tapes, including rental tapes. You can play a tape using the OPC function even if the tape was not recorded with it.

Notes

  • The auto tracking function works automatically when you play back a tape just after inserting it.
  • Sufficient picture quality may not be obtained when playing back tapes recorded on another VCR or tapes in poor condition.
  • When a tape recorded with the copyguard system is played back, intermittent distortion may appear in the upper portion of the picture. However, this is not a malfunction of the unit.

The unit incorporates an auto head cleaner which cleans the video heads when a tape is loaded or

unloaded. When the heads are not sufficiently clean, even after a tape has been loaded/unloaded several times, use the Sony V-25CL video head cleaning cassette.

Tips

  • To edit more precisely, press the PAUSE buttons on the units to release pause.
  • To cut out unwanted scenes while editing, press PAUSE on this unit when an unwanted scene begins. When that scene ends, press PAUSE again to resume recording.
