Frequently Asked Questions - SNP12 Salco

How to use the Salco SNP12 popcorn machine?

What to do if some kernels don't pop?
This is normal because some kernels lack moisture. The moisture inside the popcorn kernel makes it pop upon contact with heat. Do not worry if a few kernels remain whole.
How to clean the popcorn machine?
Unplug and let cool. Remove the measuring cup lid and upper body. Clean these parts with a non-abrasive sponge and warm soapy water. Never immerse the appliance in water or wash it in the dishwasher. Dry thoroughly before reassembling.
What are the important safety precautions?
Never leave the appliance unattended while plugged in or in use. Do not use with wet hands, do not immerse in water, and do not place near a heat source or water. Unplug after use and wait for it to cool before cleaning.
How much popcorn kernels to use?
Fill the measuring cup up to the arrow, which corresponds to about half its capacity. Do not exceed this limit to avoid overloading the appliance.
Can the popcorn machine be used for other foods?
No, the appliance is designed only for popping popcorn kernels. Any other use could damage the appliance and void the warranty.
How to make sweet or salty popcorn?
Add melted butter or margarine to the popcorn, then sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon for a sweet version, or garlic and dried herbs for a salty version. You can also make caramel by melting hard caramels with a little water in the microwave.
What to do if the appliance does not work?
Check that the plug is properly connected and that the voltage matches. If the problem persists, do not repair it yourself. Contact an Authorized Salco Service Center for professional repair.
What is the power of the appliance?
The Salco SNP12 popcorn machine has a power of 1100 W and operates on a voltage of 220-240 V ~ 50 Hz.

INTRODUCTION

Thank you for purchasing the RETRO POPCORN MAKER™! This popcorn maker is a replica of the old-fashioned diner-style popcorn machine units of the 1950's.

The RETRO POPCORN MAKER™ is designed with a retro appearance, however, it is a technologically advanced hot air popcorn popper that pops more kernels than many other popcorn makers.

This convenient tabletop-size electric popcorn popper uses air instead of oil, producing perfectly popped popcorn with less kernels to bite into. Air-popped popcorn is a deliciously healthy low-fat snack.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

The RETRO POPCORN MAKERTM is easy to use. Just follow these simple instructions.

After Taking the Unit Out of the Box

  • Your RETRO POPCORN MAKER™ is already fully assembled. Before first use, lift the top housing off of the main body and wipe clean the inside of the unit with a non-abrasive moist sponge or a non-abrasive moist towel. Wipe dry with a non-abrasive towel.
  • After cleaning the inside, put the top housing back onto the base.

Now you are ready to enjoy freshly popped popcorn in your RETRO POPCORN MAKER™!

Popping Popcorn

First, find a stable place near an electrical outlet before starting. (Make sure your cord is away from any water source. If needed, it is acceptable to use an extension cord).

  1. Fill the kernel cap on the top of the unit with your favorite popcorn. It is

IMPORTANT - NEVER underfill or overfill the kernel cap. Underfilling the cap can cause less kernels to pop and more hard kernels to come out of the unit during popping. Overfilling can cause popped popcorn to burn and smoke as it will overfill the popping chamber. (If you overfill the cap with kernels when filling, use your finger to level off.)

  1. Pour entire cap of kernels down the hole on the top of the unit until cap is empty. (See Illustration A)
  2. Place cap back in its place.

  3. Place a bowl or dish under the popcorn opening to allow popcorn to fill the bowl.

NOTE: When selecting a bowl, make sure to use one that is large enough and will fit under the popcorn chute.

RECIPES AND TIPS

SELECTING THE RIGHT POPCORN

The RETRO POPCORN MAKER™ is designed for all regular and premium brands of popcorn. Please note that yellow popcorn generally pops larger than white popcorn. Organic popcorn will work, but is not highly recommended for this machine as less kernels will pop.

Make sure to use fresh popcorn kernels, as older, dried popcorn can scorch and cause smoking in the unit.

Here's a tip :

If your popcorn is old and dried out, you can freshen it by putting the kernels into an air tight container and leaving some space for shaking. Put 1 teaspoon of water into the container for each cup of popcorn. Shake twice a day for 3 days leaving the container in the refrigerator. The kernels should be fresh again and ready to go at this time.

You can enjoy any flavor popcorn - in your own home - with The RETRO POPCORN MAKERTM. Here are some sample ideas/recipes to get you started.

NOTE: NEVER put any seasoning or oil in the popcorn popping chamber. ALWAYS season your popped popcorn after the popcorn has been popped and removed from The RETRO POPCORN MAKER™.

  • Melt butter or margarine in the microwave. Pour over the popped popcorn and toss with salt.
  • Spray with your favorite flavored vegetable spray and sprinkle with herbs - garlic powder, chili powder, basil or oregano.
  • Toss with grated Parmesan Cheese
  • The RETRO POPCORN MAKERTM makes batches of popcorn - fast and easy - for holiday popcorn and caramel balls!
  • Handy Tip: Put freshly popped popcorn in a clean brown paper bag, add your melted margarine and seasonings, shake and enjoy. Works with vegetable spray also.

  • Kettle Corn: Coat fresh popped popcorn with margarine or spray with vegetable spray. Toss with 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon. Fresh and fast Kettle Corn is yours in minutes!

  • Garlic-Herb Popcorn: 4Popcorn is a healthy snack - it is the butter you add to it that can hurt. To lighten up your calorie count, douse your popcorn with herbs, garlic, and just a little margarine.

Garlic Herb Sprinkle

Fresh Popped Popcorn

1 tablespoon margarine, melted

Prepare Garlic-Herb Sprinkle and set aside. Pop corn in The RETRO POPCORN MAKER™. Pour into a bowl, add margarine and stir well. Toss with herb mixture.

Makes 3 quarts.

  • Garlic-Herb Sprinkle: Mix 2 teaspoons each of dry oregano leaves, dry basil leaves and dry thyme leaves.

Add 1 teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder. Stir well.

Approximately 43 calories per cup.

- Easy Caramel Corn:

  • 8 cups of popped popcorn
  • 1 package of (14 oz) unwrapped caramels
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • 2 tablespoons of butter or margarine

Put the popcorn in a large bowl. In a separate microwave safe glass bowl, microwave the caramels, water and butter on HIGH 2 to 2-1/2 minutes. Wait until the caramels are fully melted, stirring frequently. Pour the caramel mixture over the popcorn and toss to coat well. Let cool for 5 minutes.

- Traditional Caramel Corn:

  • 10 cups popped popcorn
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine
  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 light corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

In a 4-quart microwave safe bowl, microwave the butter on HIGH until melted. Stir in the brown sugar and the corn syrup. Microwave on HIGH until the mixture boils for 1 to 2 minutes. Do not stir the mixture while it is heating. Remove from the microwave - remember to use mitts as the mixture is HOT! Stir in the baking soda and the vanilla. Stir in the popcorn and mix well. Microwave the whole mixture on MEDIUM HIGH 1 minute, and stir. Microwave on MEDIUM HIGH for another minute and stir until the popcorn is well coated. Spread on a cookie sheet and let cool completely. Break apart and store in a tightly covered container OR - while still warm (but safe to handle), grease your hands and form into balls.

NOTE: You can also add peanuts, candy coated chocolates, chow mein noodles, raisins, candy corn, pretzel sticks, gummy pieces, peanut butter candy pieces or make up your own combinations!
