Frequently Asked Questions - 54009 WestBend

How to use the 9-cup WestBend 54009 percolator?
Remove the lid, basket, and stem. Fill the reservoir with cold water up to the desired number of cups. Place the stem centered on the heating plate, moisten the basket, add ground coffee (see table). Replace the basket on the stem, close and lock the lid, then plug into a 120 V outlet. The appliance starts automatically and stops at the end of the cycle with an indicator light.
Why is my percolator not working?
Check that the stem is properly installed and centered on the heating plate. If the stem is not in place, the appliance will not work. Also ensure the plug is securely inserted into a 120 V outlet and the lid is locked.
How to clean the WestBend 54009 percolator?
Unplug the appliance and let it cool. Hand wash the removable parts (lid, basket, stem) in warm soapy water, or in the dishwasher on the top rack. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. Never immerse the electrical base.
When and how to descale the percolator?
Descale according to your water hardness: every month for hard water, every 3 months for medium water, once a year for soft water. Use a mixture of 20 oz cold water and 20 oz white vinegar. Let the appliance run a full cycle, then let it sit for 15 minutes before emptying and rinsing thoroughly.
What types of ground coffee to use?
Use regular ground coffee. Finely ground coffee may cause the basket to overflow. The recommended amount is 4 to 12 tablespoons depending on the number of cups (see table in the manual). No paper filter is needed.
The percolator makes noises or smoke, is this normal?
Yes, small expansion/contraction noises during heating and cooling are normal. A slight smoke or odor may occur during first uses due to manufacturing oils. This disappears after a few uses.
Can I get spare parts for model 54009?
Yes, spare parts are available from the manufacturer Focus Electronics. Order online at www.focuselectrics.com or contact customer service at (866) 290-1851. Have the model number (54009) handy.
What is the warranty for the WestBend 54009 percolator?
The appliance is covered by a one-year limited warranty from the date of purchase against defects in parts and labor. Proof of purchase is required. The warranty does not cover damage due to misuse or normal wear and tear.
Can the percolator be left on unattended?
The appliance automatically switches to keep warm mode after percolation, but it is recommended not to leave it unattended. Unplug it when only about one cup remains and before any cleaning.
What to do if the coffee is too weak or too strong?
Adjust the amount of ground coffee according to your taste. The table in the manual gives a range: for 9 cups, use 8 to 12 tablespoons. For stronger coffee, increase the amount; for weaker coffee, reduce it.

CLEANING YOUR 9 CUP ELECTRIC PERCOLATOR

  1. Unplug percolator from electrical outlet. Allow the percolator to cool completely before cleaning.
  2. Wash and rinse inside of percolator, cover, stem and basket with hot soapy water after each use and dry thoroughly. Removable parts are dishwasher-safe, top-rack only. 3. Wipe outside surface with damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Do not use abrasive scouring pads or cleansers as scratching and/or discoloration will occur.
  4. When the percolator is used, a build-up of mineral deposits may occur. Over time, mineral deposits can build up on internal parts and effect the operation of the appliance. The frequency of decalcification depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use the percolator. Indications that decalcifying is necessary are:

o Increased noise during brew cycle
Excessive steaming
Longer brewing times

  • If usage is regular, decalcifying should be carried out as follows:

O With soft water, decalcify once per year
With medium water, decalcify every 3 months
With hard water, decalcify monthly

  • To decalcify, fill percolator with 20 ounces of cold water and 20 ounces of white vinegar. Assemble with stem, basket, and cover. Plug in and let the percolator run through an entire brew cycle. When perking has stopped, let the percolator sit for 15 minutes. Unplug and drain liquid. Allow to cool and follow regular cleaning instructions to remove all vinegar traces from percolator.
