YSM1p Contemporary Active Studio Monitor
Crisp, clean, loud, flat and accurate.
Introduction
The YSM1p system is an advanced powered studio monitors. Designed specifically for recording and home audio applications. Nearly a year of research and development has helped us provide the YSM1p with the precise audio response needed for critical post-production as well as realtime recording applications. Comprehensive protection features further ensure long-term uninterrupted performance (even when life's little audio accidents occur).
Building on the success of the Yorkville studio monitor line, the active YSM1p uses the same cabinet and similar components as the popular Yorkville YSM1i. This is comprised of a rugged, shielded 6.5 inch 100-Watt woofer and a shielded 1 inch silk dome tweeter. The drivers are center aligned vertically and mounted slightly forward to minimize reflections off the baffle. A precisely tuned 2 inch cylindrical port, directly below the woofer, increases bass response and allows the cabinet size to be kept compact. The YSM1p incorporates a bi-amped power module that delivers 115 watts (85 Watts of power to the woofer, 30 Watts to the tweeter) and generates less than 0.05% distortion. The YSM1p also features a +9dB / -6dB input trim control, a defeatable limiter, specialized tweeter overpower limiting and woofer over-excision limiting.
While designing the YSM1i and YSM1p a concerted effort was made to instill the overall sonic characteristics of the popular original YSM-1. Similar in performance to the YSM1i, the YSM1p is capable of reproducing the nuances of a recording or mixing chain without contributing sonic coloration. It's suitable for home and project-studio recording and even moderate volume sound reinforcement applications. It has the clarity and bass response that you would expect to hear from a much larger cabinet and reproduces timbres with near pinpoint accuracy. The sound quality is pristine, the finest details are well defined, and the harmonics are uncolored. The rock-solid YSM1p is constructed of 3/4 inch MDF, a 3/4 inch thick PVC clad MDF baffle and features ample internal dampening material ensuring that there are no unwanted resonances.
Unique to active near field monitors in this price range, the YSM1p features user selectable filtering. A series of dipswitches on the back panel allow you to select the overall tone shape of the cabinet. In order to fine tune the response according to room placement.
- Full Space, for placing monitors in the center of the room (+2dB boost @ 20Hz to 80 Hz).
- 12 space (for placing monitors against a flat wall (0 dB boost or cut)
- 1/4 space for placing monitors in corners (-2 dB @ 20 Hz to 80 Hz).
This ensures smooth frequency response, regardless of placement in home studio, writing room or professional studio. An additional user-selectable high frequency filter (+2 dB boost @ 10kHz to 20kHz) has been added to allow further tweaking of the monitor to individual tastes. The input cable can be either XLR or 14 inch T.R.S. (balanced). On the front of the YSM1p a blue Power LED and a red input Clip LED are featured for quick status checks from the engineer's chair. The cabinet is finished in an attractive, charcoal gray vinyl that resists scuffs and is easily cleaned.

The Basics
- The extremely flat frequency response of the YSM1p creates a wide aural working area for the listener.
- Selectable High and Low frequency optimization allow subtle adjustments to the speaker/room response without compromising linearity.
- Sophisticated onboard Limiting includes a selectable Clip limiter, over-voltage limiting which protects the tweeter (at all times) and an over-current limiter that constantly guards the woofer ensuring clean reproduction.
- Actively crossed-over biamplification provides precise control over each driver's operation.
- Thermal amplifier protection assures reliable operation if the YSM1p overheats during extenuating operating conditions. The circuit is also designed to reset automatically.
- The balanced/unbalanced "combi" input jack is capable of accepting either a 1/4 or XLR connector.
- The YSM1p is electro-magnetically shielded to allow close proximity to video monitors or magnetically sensitive devices.

Input Connection
The input, located on the bottom part of the chassis, accepts line-level signal only (not speaker level). It is recommended to use balanced, shielded cables with 14 inch (T.R.S.) or XLR connectors (unbalanced 14 inch jacks can be used). Each YSM1p should be connected to a single line-level source; e.g., the Right or Left line output from a mixer or preamp. If you want to use multiple YSM1ps, they can be interconnected using "Y" adaptors.
Input Trim Control
The Input Trim control allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the input circuit. Control range is -6dB to +9dB . Adjust accordingly until the desired sound level is achieved (a normal setting would be 0dB ). If clipping is indicated (see Clip LED), reduce the Input Trim level. If more control is needed, adjust your line level from the source.
Hi Frequency Reflection Optimization DIP Switches
Walls, ceilings and furnishings reflect high frequencies, this affects the listening environment. For most room acoustics set the lower two DIP switches to the "Normal Room" [B] configuration (settings are shown on the back-panel. Otherwise select one of the other two settings to reach the desired response within the environment.

YSM1p configuration options
Low Frequency Efficiency Factor DIP Switches
Due to the long wavelengths of low frequencies, a woofer's acoustic efficiency is affected by its location within the room, relative to the walls. The diagrams shown on the YSM1p
rear control panel depict three typical speaker/room placements referred to as "Full, 12 and 14 Space." Set the upper two DIP switches in accordance with the cabinet's placement; Full Space, 12 Space or 14 Space (corner placement). 1/2 Space [E] is considered default.
Power Switch
The power switch is located at the bottom of the rear panel near the AC cord.
Blue Power LED (blue)
When the LED marked PWR is illuminated, the unit is turned on.
Clip LED (red)
The red clip LED, located on the front of the cabinet beside the Blue Power LED, indicates when the outputs of the internal amplifiers are close to clipping. To maintain ideal performance, adjust the YSM1p's Input Trim (or the output level on your mixer or preamplifier) until the Clip LED stops flickering. Engaging the Clip Limiter (see Limiter Pushbutton) will help avoid distortion on peaks.
Limiter Pushbutton
The Limiter pushbutton enables the onboard Clip limiter. Set to the IN position, the internal Clip Limiter is activated. This feature is used to help limit distortion when the amplifier is driven to full power. The red Clip LED, located on the front of the cabinet, indicates the Limiter's threshold.
Biamplification
The YSM1p uses two amplifiers, one for the tweeter and one for the woofer. The common term is biamplification, a process which utilizes an electronically active crossover network. This type of crossover network divides the signal much more precise than traditional passive crossover networks.
Amplifier Thermal Protection and Limiting
Please ensure that there is adequate space provided around the rear of the speaker cabinet. Allowing good ventilation to prevent the amplifier from overheating will help prevent the unit from shutting down.

NOTE: Both of the internal amplifiers are thermally protected, should the back be covered, preventing adequate heat dissipation (or should some other condition lead to overheating), the amplifiers will shut down. The amplifiers should reset automatically after a few minutes. This feature should only engage under severe overheating conditions, proper measures should be taken to permit adequate cooling.
TECH: The woofer and tweeter are protected against sustained overdriving (e.g., feedback) and clipping. Should the amplifier sense that either condition exists, limiters will begin to reduce the overall output until more ideal conditions are met. To ensure full-time driver protection (when the Clip limiter is disabled) the internal limiters will remain on. If the Clip LED becomes active, reduce the Trim Level on the YSM1p, the preamp, or mixer output level to maintain normal operation.
