Frequently Asked Questions - HHT-145 KAZ

Why does the filter indicator show that filters are still clean when they are visibly dirty?
The indicator is based on a timer (3 months of continuous operation). If the air contains many contaminants (smoke, pets), the filters may get dirty faster than the indicator signals. Clean the filters if necessary, then reset the indicator by pressing the filter button for 5 seconds.
My air purifier does not turn on. What should I do?
Check that both HEPA filters are correctly installed and that the back grille is properly locked. The device has a safety switch that prevents operation if the grille is not in place. Also ensure the unit is plugged in and the outlet works.
When should I replace the UV bulbs?
After about 6 months of continuous use, the message 'Replace UV Bulb' appears and the light turns red. Replace the UV bulb cartridge (part HUV-145) following the instructions in the manual.
My air purifier is noisy and the airflow has decreased. What is the cause?
The filters are probably dirty. Vacuum the HEPA filters and wash the pre-filter with warm water. Accumulated particles clog the filters and reduce airflow.
How long should I run the air purifier?
For optimal results, we recommend 24/7 operation. Efficiency is highest with doors and windows closed.
Can I wash the HEPA filters?
No, the HEPA filters are not washable. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean them. Water would destroy them.
How does the electronic filter indicator work?
The indicator is based on a timer: it lights up after 3 months of continuous operation. The segments fill progressively. When it turns red, clean the filters and reset by pressing the button for 5 seconds.
How do I clean the pre-filter?
Remove the pre-filter from the back grille. Shake it to remove dust, or rinse it with warm water (no detergent). Let it dry completely before putting it back.
Can I use the odor filter instead of the standard pre-filter?
Yes, the CZ odor filter is provided with the unit. It is placed in the back grille instead of the washable pre-filter. It is not washable and must be replaced periodically (contact customer service for replacements).
How do I reset the UV bulb indicator after replacement?
After installing the new UV bulb cartridge (HUV-145), plug the unit back in and turn it on. Press the UV bulb button for 5 seconds until the light changes from red to green and the message disappears.

HEPA CLEAN™ WHISPER QUIET AIR PURIFIER WITH UV LIGHT

For Model Series HHT-145

  1. Do not use air cleaner where combustible gases, vapors or an oxygen rich environment are present.
  2. Do not expose the air purifier to rain, or use near water, in a bathroom, laundry area or other damp location.
  3. The air purifier must be used in its upright position.
  4. Do not allow foreign objects to enter ventilation or exhaust opening as this may cause electric shock or damage to the air purifier. Do not block air outlets or intakes.
  5. Locate air purifier near the outlet and avoid using an extension cord.
  6. This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of shock, this plug is intended to fit only one way in a polarized outlet. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. DO NOT attempt to defeat this safety feature.
  7. A loose fit between the AC outlet (receptacle) and plug may cause overheating and a distortion of the plug. Contact a qualified electrician to replace loose or worn outlet.
  8. Do not sit, stand or place heavy objects on the air purifier.
  9. Disconnect power supply before servicing.

WARNING: To Reduce The Risk of Fire or Electric Shock, Do Not Use This Air Purifier With Any Solid-State Speed Control Device.

SET-UP

  • Select a firm, level and flat location. For proper airflow, locate the unit at least 3 feet (1 M) from any wall or furniture.
  • When operating, large volumes of air are drawn toward the air purifier. Surrounding areas should be cleaned and/or vacuumed frequently to prevent build-up of dust and other contaminants. This may also help prolong the life of the filter. If the unit is placed on a light colored carpet, a small mat or rug should be used underneath to prevent permanent staining. This is especially important in homes with contamination from smoking, fireplaces or where candles are burned.
  • Ensure the exit grille (front of the unit) faces away from the closest wall or furniture.
  • Ensure no grilles are blocked.

INSTALL HEPA-TYPE FILTERS

The HEPA-Type Filters are supplied within the air purifier. They are wrapped to ensure purity.

  • Make sure the air purifier is turn off and unplugged.
  • Remove the rear grille by pressing the notch on the top of the rear grille and pulling the grille towards you (Fig. 2).
  • Remove the filters by gently pushing along the edge of the filter frame and pulling it forward. Repeat for the second filter.
  • Remove the protective wrap from the filters.
  • Place the filters back into the air purifier housing and snap the rear grille back into place.

Note that the pre-filter needs to be in position along the rear grille before snapping the grille back into place.

The Top filter must be in place in order for the unit to operate.

CLEANING THE HEPA-TYPE FILTERS

This model is equipped with permanent HEPA-Type filters which never need replacement with normal use.

To Clean Your HEPA-Type Filter:

DO NOT USE WATER OR OTHER LIQUIDS TO CLEAN THE HEPA-TYPE FILTER.
- It is recommended that you use a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter built into it. If a HEPA filter vacuum is not available, you should vacuum your HEPA filter outdoors to keep the particles from getting recirculated in the air in your home.
- To vacuum-clean the filter, hold the filter and run a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle or brush attachment along the filter to pick-up the dirt and particles (Fig. 8). Repeat along the entire surface of the HEPA-Type filter. We recommend that a vacuum with hepa filtration is used for cleaning the filters.
- Note the filter may still be discolored even after cleaning it. This is acceptable and will not affect performance.
- After vacuuming the filter, place it back into the air purifier housing and snap filter grille into place. These cleaning intervals are intended as guidelines only. Performance of any filter media is dependent upon the concentration of contaminants going through the system. High concentrations of contaminants such as dust, pet dander and smoking will reduce the useful performance of the filter.

NOTE: The HEPA-Type filters are not washable.

MAINTAINING YOUR STAGE 1 WASHABLE PARTICLE PRE-FILTER

The stage 1 particle pre-filter helps pick up large airborne particles that enter the rear grille. This pre-filter can be periodically removed and shaken to clean it. Alternatively, it can be rinsed by hand under warm water (Fig. 9). Let the pre-filter air dry completely before inserting back into the unit (Fig. 10). If you need to replace this item, please call 1-800-477-0457 or visit www.kaz.com.

OPTIONAL: Changing the Odor Control Filter

If you have chosen to use the CZ odor control filter that came with your air purifier, it will lose its effectiveness over time and will need to be replaced. Call 1-800-477-0457 or visit www.kaz.com to order your replacement odor control filters.

If using the CZ odor control filter, it is recommended that you store the original washable pre-filter in the event that you decided to use it in the future.

To insert it into the unit, simply place securely into the rear grille in lieu of standard pre-filter as shown in figure 10.

Note: The CZ filter is not washable.

REPLACING THE ULTRAVIOLET (UV) BULBS

  • After about six months of continuous use, the UV bulbs must be replaced.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My filter bar says my filter is still relatively clean but when I checked my filter, it was really dirty

In conditions where smoke, pets or air with a lot of contaminants are present it is possible that the filter could be dirty sooner than indicated on the indicator. The filter life indicator on your unit runs on a timer and if there are more particles in your air than in an average home, your filter could capture airborne particles sooner than indicated on the display. The indicator is intended to be used as a guideline and individual environmental conditions will vary.

My unit will not turn on.

The air purifier has safety features to ensure that the unit is ready for operation. Check to make sure both HEPA-type filters are installed flush to the air purifier. Check to make sure the rear cover is installed flush with the unit and is locked.

When do the UV bulbs need to be replaced?

The "Replace UV Bulb" message and light will turn on after 6 months of continuous use, so the bulbs should be replaced at this time.

My Air Purifier is starting to make noise and the air output is less. What's wrong?

The filters may be dirty. High amounts of contaminants can block the pores in the filter and stop the air from moving through it. Clean the Filters.

How long should I run my Air Purifier?

For best results, you should operate your Air Purifier 24 hours a day. This unit will be more effective when doors and windows are closed.

Can I wash my HEPA-Type filter?

No. Washing the HEPA-Type filter will destroy it.

How does the electronic filter check work?

The filter check LED will light up after 3 months of continuous operation of the air purifier.

How does the UV check light work?

The UV check light will change from green to red when it is time to change the UV bulbs. Follow the instructions located in "Replacing the ultraviolet (UV) bulbs".
