1 INTRODUCTION

The aim of this manual is to enable users to use the “A DWNFLT-GTO” accessory (indicated hereafter as “downfill accessory”) correctly and take all the measures and have all the means necessary for safe long-lasting use of the entire system.

The user is intended as being: the purchaser, site manager, personnel responsible for transport and flying, warehouse staff and/or those responsible for maintenance and operators involved in general.

The down-fill accessory, used to extend the functions of a GTO Line array, consists in a main frame, fitted with a series of accessory components and intended to support a variable number of loudspeaker enclosures (a maximum of 5 Mantas or 4 Butterfly CDH483) dedicated to the coverage of the area nearest to the array, which will be called “down-fill elements”. The series of down-fill elements connected below the down-fill accessory will be called “down-fill array”. Thanks to its specially conceived design, it ensures the continuity of high frequency emission with the main GTO array, ensuring the utmost uniformity of sound reinforcement in the zones covered by the two sections of the complete array (Main and down-fill).

This document must be kept by the person responsible, in a suitable place, in order to always be available for consultation. In the event of loss and/or damage, a new copy can be requested from Outline s.r.l. - Via L. da Vinci N°56, 25020 Flero (Brescia), Italy.

The rigging accessories described in this manual are manufactured, certified and marked in compliance with Community Directive 89/392/CEE, enacted with DPR 459 of 24/07/96 and later amendments 91/368/CEE, 93/44/CEE and 93/68/CEE.

Figure 1 – Complete down-fill accessory

Very briefly, the down-fill accessory consists in:

o a main frame
- four brackets with quick-locking pins with buttons for connecting the main frame to the bottom element of the GTO array;
- two brackets for the rear connection of the first element of the down-fill array
- two spring-loaded pins for fastening the rear connector brackets to the down-fill array
- two front spring-loaded pins for fixing the front of the first element of the down-fill array

The main frame è built by assembling and welding a series of beams and plates, specially manufactured and finished in ENAW6082 aluminium alloy. The main frame fitted with its accessory components has been designed for use for Flying loudspeaker enclosures: i.e. with the loudspeaker enclosures suspended below it.

2.1 Load

The down-fill accessory is designed to support a maximum number of five MANTAS or four Butterfly CDH483, including the connection hardware and power and signal connection cables.

It must be noted that the aforementioned values regard conditions in which there are no lateral forces, such as wind, for example. In the event of such forces occurring, they must be prevented from creating further load on the structure, or they will reduce the safety factor. In this case, it is advisable to use dedicated stay wires to hold the system still.

4 NOTES

4.1 Connector pins

Assembly of the main GTO arrays and the down-fill accessory is carried out with quick-action connector pins. It is important that they are correctly positioned, i.e. fully inserted, so that the locking balls are completely in working position (the locking button must be completely out/released).

5 PACKAGING

The structural parts of the down-fill accessory are packaged and the accessory components provided fixed to it.

6 TRANSPORT

Transport must be carried out by qualified personnel, to ensure that the material is handled correctly. The down-fill accessory must not receive bumps or impacts: in particular, the frame must be kept away from other weights that, if laid on it, could bend or damage it.

For each of these operations, appropriate personal security/protection devices must be used.

7 CHECK ON ARRIVAL

When the goods arrive, check their conditions against the shipping/freight documents, make certain no items essential to the installation (e.g. pins, brackets, etc.) have been removed; should this be the case, inform the transport company and the manufacturer.

8 MAINTENANCE & CONTROL

Outline A DWNFLT-GTO - MAINTENANCE & CONTROL - 1

The down-fill accessory's excellent efficiency and good preservation are ensured by careful maintenance, but this is not synonymous with perfect operation. In fact, correct use, work intensity and the environment itself are decisive.

Outline A DWNFLT-GTO - MAINTENANCE & CONTROL - 2

Ordinary maintenance includes:

  • visual control of all the down-fill accessory's components for obvious defects;
    o assembly and handling tests.

These operations must be carried out by qualified staff prior to every time the equipment us used. Any irregularity must be reported and work stopped.

8.1 Periodical control

Outline A DWNFLT-GTO - Periodical control - 1

The equipment and accessories must be regularly tested by expert staff, at least once every three months.

Checks and tests must be carried out on the structure and the accessories provided with it (pins, brackets, etc.) and must be reported in a special register (see example in Annex 1). This register must be kept up to date, entering the results of the tests and checks, and must be signed by the person who actually carries out the tests.

In the event of any “irregularity” occurring, use of the device must be stopped, to enable an accurate examination to be carried out by expert technicians.

Various types of “irregularities” can occur. This following is just a list to facilitate their possible identification; it must also be noted that these defects may also occur simultaneously. The main ones are:

  • oxidation and/or corrosion – widespread or limited to an element;
    o fatigue cracks or localized buckling;
  • buckling/deformation of the structure or elements (for example the ovaling of pins' and pinions' holes, bending of brackets, etc.);
    o wear (for example of pins, pinions or contact zones);
    o damage of protective surface treatment, probable sign of an underlying crack;
    o etc.

The register must always be at the disposal of the authorities responsible for controls. In particular, the following checks must be carried out on the rigging accessory:

o overall structure and, in particular, elements' welding;
o ovalization, deformation and/or cracks in the pin/pinion holes;
- conditions of fixing pins and pinions.

9 REMOVING FROM USE

In the event of even just one of the following list of defects being found in any component of the down-fill accessory, it must be immediately removed from use:

○ cracks in any element of the structure;
o permanent deformation of the load-bearing structures;
○ non-compliant results of the checks carried out.

10 DISPOSAL AND SCRAPPING

If any component has to be scrapped for any reason, disposal must be carried out by authorized companies and in compliance with current regulations regarding this matter.

Take into consideration the fact that the accessory is manufactured prevalently in aluminium.

11 MAINTENANCE REGISTER

Outline A DWNFLT-GTO - MAINTENANCE REGISTER - 1

As anticipated in the MAINTENANCE & CONTROL chapter, for every down-fill accessory and each of its components, a special register must be kept, in which the periodical tests that the structure and relative accessories undergo will be noted. An example is shown in Annex N°1.
