Frequently Asked Questions - MEDIAMATRIX CAB 8I PEAVEY

What is the role of the CobraNet protocol in the CAB 8i?
The CobraNet protocol transmits up to 8 digital audio channels in real-time over an Ethernet 100BaseT network without lossy compression or degradation. It makes audio transport deterministic and reliable.
How to configure the 48 V phantom power on the inputs?
48 V phantom power can be activated or deactivated via software for each input channel individually. Use the MediaMatrix software to toggle the 'Phantom Power' option on each channel.
What gain levels are available for the inputs?
The analog gain is adjustable via software from -9 dB to +60 dB in 1 dB steps. A 20 dB attenuator is available for line mode switching. Digital gain is also adjustable.
How to use the control voltage (CV) inputs?
The 8 CV inputs accept 0-10 V DC. You can connect potentiometers, switches, or external voltage sources. Internal 10 V is available to power potentiometers.
What do the LEDs on the front panel mean?
The LEDs indicate: signal transmission/reception, transmission/reception error, fault, Ethernet link, conductor status, RS-485, and power presence. The 8 dBu-scaled level meters show analog level with a red clip LED.
How to connect word clock for redundancy?
Use the two front/rear BNC connectors to daisy-chain two CAB 8i units. If the first module fails, the second automatically takes over. Wiring is done in daisy-chain.
What are the minimum loads for the relay outputs?
The relays support up to 120 V AC/DC and 2 A maximum. They have normally open and normally closed contacts. Use them to control external devices (projectors, screens, etc.).
Can I use the CAB 8i for microphone and line signals simultaneously?
Yes, each channel can be individually configured as mic or line via software. The 20 dB attenuation applies in line mode. Note the impedance: mic 2.2 kΩ, line 22.2 kΩ.
How to rack mount the CAB 8i?
The device occupies 1U (44.5 mm) in a 19-inch rack. Attach the provided rack ears. Ensure adequate ventilation as cooling is active via fan.
Where to find drivers and software for the CAB 8i?
The CAB 8i is a CobraNet device. The MediaMatrix (NWare) control software is required to configure parameters. Download it from the Peavey website or from your dealer.

MediaMatrix® CAB™ 8i and CAB™ 8o

Description

The CAB ^™ 8i and CAB ^™ 8o, respectively, are eight-input and eight-output MediaMatrix ^® gateways onto and off of an Ethernet network for real-time MediaMatrix ^® audio distribution and control. They employ Cobranet proprietary protocol to ensure seamless, error-free transmission of high-quality real-time audio without drop-outs or lossy compression across a 100baseT Ethernet network.

The CAB ^™ 8i uploads eight channels of either microphone-level or line-level analog audio signals onto an Ethernet network. Each input channel has software controlled, continuously variable analog input gain from -9 dB to +60 dB in 1 dB steps. Each has 48-volt phantom power and a 20 dB mic/line pad. Both functions are software switchable.

The CAB 80 downloads eight channels of line-level analog audio signals from an Ethernet network. Maximum output levels are individually jumper-selectable between +24 dBu, +18 dBu, +12 dBu, and +6 dBu.

In addition to eight input or output audio paths, both products incorporate eight voltage-control input ports, eight software controlled TTL outputs port, eight software controlled relays with both normally open and normally closed contacts, an RS-485 port with multi-drop connections, and two word-clock linking BNC connectors.

Features

- Eight channels of either microphone or line-level audio transmitted onto an Ethernet network using CobraNet™ protocol sampled at 48 kHz (CAB 8i).

- Eight channels of line-level audio transmitted from an Ethernet network using CobraNet protocol sampled at 48 kHz (CAB 8o).

- A/D converters are 24-bit, 64 times oversampling, using delta-sigma modulation (CAB 8i).

• D/A converters are 24-bit, 128 times oversampling, using delta-sigma modulation (CAB 8o).

- 48-volt phantom power for microphone inputs, individually software switchable on each input channel (CAB 8i).

- 24- or 20-bit transmission quantization at a 48 kHz sampling rate.

- Eight channels of analog control voltage input ports which allow external switches, potentiometers, or voltage sources to control MediaMatrix software parameters via an Ethernet link.

- Eight channels of TTL control outputs ports which are software controllable via an Ethernet link.

- Eight relays, with both normally open and normally closed contacts, which allow software control of external devices via an Ethernet link.

- A non-Ethernet RS-485 control port with two multit-drop connections.

  • Two word clock linking connectors that enable auto-switch-over to a second unit, should one unit fail.
  • One rack-unit (1-3/4"), fan-cooled chassis.
