About Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices
You can use Windows Live™ Messenger for BlackBerry® devices to chat with other Windows Live™ Messenger users from your BlackBerry device. To use Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices, you must have a Windows Live ID. For more information about Windows Live Messenger, visit get/live.com/messenger/overview.
Sign in to Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices
- On the Home screen or in the application list, click Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices.
- Type your Windows Live™ ID and password.
- Set the Domain field for the user name that you typed.
- Click Sign in.
To sign out, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key. Click Sign out.
Change your display name or display picture
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click My Info.

Perform any of the following actions:

To change your display name, type a name.

To change your display picture, press the Menu key. Click Change Display Picture. Click a picture. If necessary, center the picture in the box. Press the Menu key. Click Crop and Save.

Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
About sound profiles
You can set notification options, such as vibrate or tone, for Windows Live™ Messenger for BlackBerry® devices in the sounds application. The Windows Live Messenger Alert item specifies how you are notified when a contact that you have set an availability notification for becomes available. The Windows Live Messenger New Message item specifies how you are notified of incoming Windows Live Messenger messages.
Depending on the sound profile that is set in the sounds application on your device, you might not hear the audible notification that you have set for Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices. For more information about sounds, click the Help icon on the Home screen of your BlackBerry device.
Availability
About your status
Your status is made up of a status indicator and a status message. You can create a custom status by typing your own status message and choosing a status indicator.
Change your status
If you change your status to offline, your contacts cannot send you messages.
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click My Info.
- Change the Status field.
Add a status message
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click My Info.
- Type a status message.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
Show when you are on a call
Depending on your wireless network, this feature might not be supported.
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click My Info.
- Select the Show When I'm On The Phone check box.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
To stop showing when you are on a call, clear the Show When I'm On The Phone check box.
Receive notification when a contact is online
You can receive a message when the contact is online. Depending on the sound profile that is set on your device, you might also receive an audible notification.
- On the contact list screen, in a contact group, highlight an offline contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Alert Me.
- Click OK.
Contacts
Add a contact
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Add a Contact.
- Type an email address.
- Click OK.

To link the contact with a contact in the contacts application, perform one of the following actions:

If the contact is already in the contacts application, click Select Contact. Click a contact.
- If the contact is not yet in the contacts application, click New Contact. Type the contact information. Press the Menu key. Click Save.
View a contact's information
- On the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Contact Info.
Link a contact with a contact in the contacts application
When you link a contact with a contact in the contacts application, you might be able to perform additional tasks. For example, during a conversation, you might be able to call or send an email message to the contact quickly from the menu.
- On the contact list screen, in a contact group, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Link to BlackBerry Contact.

Perform one of the following actions:

If the contact is already in the contacts application, click Select Contact. Click a contact.
- If the contact is not yet in the contacts application, click New Contact. Type the contact information. Press the Menu key. Click Save.
Delete a contact
- On the contact list screen, in a contact group, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.

Click Delete Contact.

Click Delete.
Block a contact
If you block a contact, you appear as offline in that contact's contact list.
- On the contact list screen, in a contact group, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Block Contact.
To unblock a contact, click Unblock Contact.
View blocked contacts
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Show Blocked Contacts field to Yes.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
To hide blocked contacts again, change the Show Blocked Contacts field to No.
Organize offline contacts
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.

Perform one of the following actions:

To group offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to Group.
- To hide offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to No.

To view offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to Yes.

Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
A contact no longer appears in my contact list
Try performing the following actions:
If you have changed options to hide offline contacts, organize offline contacts so that you can view offline contacts.
If you have collapsed the group that the contact is in, expand the group. On the contact list screen, click the group.
Conversations
Send a message
- On the contact list screen, click an online contact.
- Type a message.
- Press the Enter key.
Add an emoticon
- When you are composing a message, press the Menu key.
- Click Add Smiley.
- Click an emoticon.
Send a file to a contact
If your BlackBerry® device is associated with an email account that uses a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, you might be able to send files that are stored on your organization's network. For more information about accessing a file from your organization's network, click the Help icon on the Home screen of your device.
- On the contact list screen, highlight an online contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Send File.
- Perform one of the following actions:
To send a picture, click Picture. Click a picture.
- To send a document, click File. Click a file.
- To send a voice note, click Voice Clip. Click Start. Record your message. Click Send.
- To send a contact attachment, click Contact. Click a contact.
Add another contact to the conversation
- During a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Invite.
- Click a contact.
View a list of conversation participants
- During a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click View Participants.
Email a conversation
Depending on your wireless service plan, this feature might not be supported.
- During a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Email Conversation.
Copy a conversation
- During a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Copy Conversation.
Clear a conversation
- During a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Clear Conversation.
Switch conversations
- During a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Switch Conversation.
- Click a contact.
End a conversation
- During a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click End Conversation.
Prevent conversations from appearing in the messages application
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Show Conversations in Messages Application field to No.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
To view conversations in the messages application again, change the Show Conversations in Messages Application field to Yes.
Stop grouping messages in conversations
In a conversation, by default, consecutive messages that you send or receive are grouped together.
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Group Sequential Messages in Conversations field to No.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
I am not receiving notification for incoming messages
In the sounds application, try performing the following actions:
- Verify that the All Alerts Off sound profile is not selected.
- Verify that the Volume fields for the Windows Live Messenger item are not set to Silent.
- Change the notification options for the Windows Live Messenger New Message item.
Text sometimes changes after I type it
If AutoText recognizes specific text, it is designed to replace the text that you type with the AutoText entry automatically.
To view or change AutoText entries, during a conversation, press the Menu key. Click Edit AutoText.
For more information about AutoText, click the Help icon on the Home screen of your BlackBerry® device.
Conversation history
Turn on conversation history
- On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Save Message History field to Device or Media Card.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
View the conversation history for a contact
You can only perform this task if you have previously turned on conversation history.
- On the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click View History.
- Click a conversation history.
Search for text in a conversation history
You can only perform this task if you have previously turned on conversation history.
- On the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click View History.
- Type the text.
- Click Search.
- In the search results, click a conversation history.
Delete a conversation history
You can only perform this task if you have previously turned on conversation history.
- On the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click View History.
- Press the Menu key.

Perform one of the following actions:

To delete the conversation history for an individual contact, click Delete Contact's History.
- To delete the conversation history for all contacts, click Delete Complete History.
