Translation of the original instructions from German. Please read these operating instructions carefully and observe the notes given. Use the instructions to familiarise yourself with the equipment, the operating controls, their correct use, and the notes on safety.
For safety reasons, children under 16 as well as persons not familiar with these operating instructions should not use this Hedge Trimmer. Persons with reduced physical or mental abilities may use the product only if they are supervised or instructed by a responsible person.
Keep these operating instructions in a safe place.
Where to Use Your Hedge Trimmer
Intended purpose
The GARDENA Hedge Trimmers are designed for cutting hedges in domestic gardens and allotments.
Compliance with the operating instructions
Compliance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer is a prerequisite for using the tool correctly. The operating instructions also include the conditions for operation, repair and maintenance.
Attention
Because of the danger of physical injuries, this tool must not be used for cutting lawns / grass verges, or for cutting in the sense of shredding for composting.
Summary of Operating Instructions for Your Hedge Trimmer
Use the cable lock. Plug the mains plug into the socket.
- Hold the guide handle with one hand and the grip at the end of the handle with the other hand.
- Press the start buttons.


Please note by using your Electric Hedge Trimmer following principle safety hints in order to avoid electric shock, injury and fire risk:
| Inspections before each use | Inspect the unit before each use. Do not use the Hedge Trimmer, if safety devices (two-hand switch, blade stop, impact protection) and/or the blades are damaged or worn. Never bypass safety devices. |
| Inspect the area to be cut before beginning work | Inspect the area to be cut before and during work. Remove any foreign objects. |
| Remove obstacles | If, in spite of care, there is an obstruction when cutting, turn off the Hedge Trimmer and remove it. |
| Use/responsibility | This Hedge Trimmer can cause serious injuries! Use the unit only for the purposes specified in these operating instructions. |
| Do not overload the Hedge Trimmer | Do not overload the Hedge Trimmer – to work better and safer do not exceed the given power consumption. |
| Keep the guide-handle dry | Keep the guide-handle dry and free from oil and grease. |
| Concentrate and work with care | Concentrate and work with care. You are responsible for safety in the area of work. Keep the area of work tidy. Untidiness in the area of work can cause accidents. |
| Keep others away from the working area | Make sure that there are no other people (especially children) or animals anywhere near the working area. |
| Wear protective clothing | Do not wear loose clothes, jewellery, etc. They could get caught in the trimmer. Wear non-slip shoes, gloves and an eye protection. Wear long trousers to protect your legs. |
| Secure foothold and stable body position | Ensure you have a secure foothold during operation of the machine, especially when using steps. The extension cable should always be kept away from the cutting area. Attention! Take extra care when walking backwards. You may stumble. |
| Keep the motor casing and ventilation clear | Keep the motor casing and ventilation free from obstructions, leaves and other similar things. Do not use the Hedge Trimmer in the vicinity of flammable liquids and gases. |
| Jammed blades → turn off the Hedge Trimmer | If the blades get jammed, please disconnect the unit and remove the object (thick branch, foreign body). |
Initial Operation
| Visibility | Only work when visibility is good. |
| If you stop working | Never leave the Hedge Trimmer unattended in the working place. If you stop work, store the Hedge Trimmer in a safe place. Disconnect the mains plug! |
| Should you stop work in order to get to another working place, always switch off the Hedge Trimmer to go there. Disconnect the mains plug! | |
| Always attach the blade protection for transport and storage of the unit. | |
| Familiarise yourself with the surroundings | Make yourself familiar with the surroundings and look out for dangers which you may not detect due to machinery noise. |
| Never use in rain or damp/wet areas | Never use the unit when it rains or in damp/wet areas. Do not operate the Hedge Trimmer near swimming pools and garden ponds. |
| Electrical safety – check for damage | Check the power cable regularly for damage and signs of wear and tear. The power cable must only be exchanged by an authorised electrician. Please contact your GARDENA Service Centre. |
| Mains cable | The Hedge Trimmer must only be operated with an undamaged electrical cable. If the mains- or extension cable is damaged, disconnect the mains plug immediately. |
| Waterproof extension cable socket | The socket of an extension cable should be waterproof. |
| Extension cable | Only use extension cables designed for outdoor use. → Ask your electrician. |
| Using portable units outdoors | For portable units which are used outdoors, we recommend to use a residual-current device having a residual-current rating ≤ 30 mA. |
| For Switzerland | In Switzerland use of a residual-current device is obligatory. |
| Never carry the Hedge Trimmer by its cable | Never carry the Hedge Trimmer by its cable. Never use the cable to pull the connector plug out of the mains socket. Protect the cable from heat, oil and sharp edges. |

Cable lock / Extension Cable
Make part of the extension cable into a loop and clip into the cable lock.
prevents the cables being unplugged by accident.
Then:
Connect the mains and extension cables.

Starting the Hedge Trimmer
Stopping the Hedge Trimmer
The Hedge Trimmer is fitted with a two-hand safety switch to prevent the tool being turned on by accident. To turn the Hedge Trimmer on, simultaneously press the start button on the guide handle and on the grip at the end of the handle.
- With one hand, hold the guide handle and press the start button.
- Then use the other hand to hold the grip at the end of the handle and press the start button.
The Hedge Trimmer starts moving.
To stop the Hedge Trimmer, simply release one of the start buttons either on the guide handle or the grip at the end of the handle. In accordance with safety regulations, an additional safety device ensures that the blade motion stops within 1 sec.

Impact protection
Safety Clutch (Slip-Clutch)
The projecting guide (impact protection) prevents any kick-back if the hedge trimmer hits a solid object.

Safety devices
The safety clutch protects motor, gear and blades from mechanical damage caused by the blades jamming.
If the blades are jammed by an object:
disconnect the trimmer from the power supply and remove the object.
The safety devices installed by the manufacturer must not be removed and/or bypassed, e.g. by tying down a switch in the handle.
Never use a tool which is not complete or which has been modified from its original design.
To prevent the Hedge Trimmer starting by accident, never carry the Hedge Trimmer by the start buttons on the guide handle.

| Always disconnect the Hedge Trimmer before performing any repairs, inspection or maintenance work. | |
| Repairs must only be carried out by GARDENA Service Centres, or dealers authorised by GARDENA. | |
| The Hedge Trimmer blades should be cleaned after each use and lubricated with an oil of low viscosity (e.g. spray-oil). | |

| Store your Hedge Trimmer in a dry place away from frost and put on the blade protection. | |

GARDENA guarantees this product for 3 years (from date of purchase). This guarantee covers all serious defects of the unit that can be proved to be material or manufacturing faults. Under warranty we will either replace the unit or repair it free of charge if the following conditions apply:
- The unit must have been handled properly and in keeping with the requirements of the operating instructions.
- Neither the purchaser or a non-authorised third party have attempted to repair the unit.
The blade and eccentric drive are wearing parts and are not covered by the guarantee.
This manufacturer's guarantee does not affect the user's existing warranty claims against the dealer/seller.
In case of claim, please return the faulty unit together with a copy of the receipt and a description of the fault, with postage paid to one of the GARDENA Service Centres listed on the back of these operating instructions.
