Frequently Asked Questions - ER-4 Ubiquiti Networks

What is the Ubiquiti ER-4 EdgeRouter 4?
The ER-4 is a high-performance Gigabit Ethernet router designed for small and medium businesses. It offers 4 Gigabit ports and 1 SFP port, with advanced routing and firewall capabilities powered by EdgeOS.
How do I reset the ER-4 to factory defaults?
Press and hold the Reset button on the front panel for about 10 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly. The device will reboot with default settings.
What power supply does the ER-4 need?
It requires a 12V DC, 2A adapter with a 2.1mm center-positive barrel connector. Use only the included or compatible power supply.
Can the ER-4 be rack-mounted?
Yes, with an optional rack-mount bracket (sold separately). It also fits in a standard 19-inch rack when used with the bracket.
Does the ER-4 support VPN connections?
Yes, it supports IPsec, OpenVPN, L2TP, and PPTP VPN protocols for secure site-to-site and remote access connections.
How do I update the firmware on the ER-4?
Download the latest firmware from the Ubiquiti website. Log into the web UI (usually 192.168.1.1), go to System > Firmware, upload the .tar file, and apply.
What is the maximum throughput of the ER-4?
With hardware acceleration, the ER-4 can achieve up to 2 Gbps for large packets and about 1 million packets per second.
Is the ER-4 fanless?
Yes, the ER-4 uses passive cooling with no internal fans, making it silent and reliable for office environments.
Can I use the ER-4 as a switch?
While primarily a router, it can function as a layer 3 switch with inter-VLAN routing. Port switching is configurable via EdgeOS.
What should I do if the ER-4 is not booting?
Check the power adapter and cable. Try a different outlet. If the LED is off, the power supply may be faulty. Use a serial console (RS232 via mini-USB) to diagnose boot issues.

TERMS OF USE: All Ethernet cabling runs must use CAT5 (or above). It is the professional installer's responsibility to follow local country regulations, including operation within legal frequency channels, output power, indoor cabling requirements, and Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) requirements.

Installation Requirements

  • For indoor applications, use Category 5 (or above) UTP cabling approved for indoor use.
  • For outdoor applications, shielded Category 5 (or above) cabling should be used for all wired Ethernet connections and should be grounded through the AC ground of the power supply.

We recommend that you protect your networks from harmful outdoor environments and destructive ESD events with industrial-grade, shielded Ethernet cable from Ubiquiti Networks. For more details, visit:
