Intended use:

The GARDENA Trimmer is intended to trim and to cut lawn and areas of grass in private domestic gardens and allotments.

The product is not intended for continuous operation.

1 Training

a) Read the instructions carefully. Be familiar with the controls and the correct use of the machine. b) Never allow children or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the machine. 2 Preparation

a) Before use, check the supply and extension cord for signs of damage or aging. If the cord becomes damaged during use, disconnect the cord from the supply immediately. DO NOT TOUCH THE CORD BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE SUPPLY. Do not use the machine if the cord is damaged or worn. b) Before use, always visually inspect the machine for damaged, missing, or misplaced guards or shields. c) Never operate the machine while people, especially children, or pets are nearby.

3 Operation

a) Keep supply and extension cords away from cutting means. b) Wear eye protection and stout shoes at all times while operating the machine. c) Avoid using the machine in bad weather conditions, especially when there is a risk of lightning.

Battery safety

The battery to be charged must be placed on a nonflammable, heat resistant and non-conductive surface while charging.

The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited.

Keep corrosive, flammable and easily combustible objects clear of the battery charger and the battery.

Do not cover the battery charger and the battery while charging.

Disconnect the battery charger immediately in the event of smoke formation or fire.

Only use the original GARDENA Charger to charge the battery. The use of other battery chargers may damage the batteries irreparably and even cause a fire.

Only use original GARDENA batteries for the GARDENA battery product.

Do not charge any third-party batteries. There is a risk of fire and explosion!

If you notice fire: Extinguish the flames with oxygen reducing materials.

DANGER! Risk of explosion!

Protect batteries from heat and fire. Do not leave on radiators or expose to strong sunshine for long periods.

Do not operate in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Batteries may create sparks which could ignite the dust or fumes.

Check your replacement battery before each use. Visually check the battery before each use. A non-functioning battery must be disposed of correctly. Do not send by post. For further details, please contact your local disposal companies. For risks of injury do not use the battery as a power source for other products. Only use the battery for the GARDENA product intended.

Only charge and use the battery in ambient temperatures of between 0 °C and 40 °C. Allow battery to cool down after long periods of use.

Check the charging cable regularly for signs of damage or ageing (brittleness). Only use it in perfect condition.

Do not stow or transport the battery above 45 °C or in direct sunlight. Ideally, the battery should be stored below 25 °C so that self-discharge is low.

Do not expose the battery to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a battery will increase the risk of electric shock.

Keep battery in order (clean) especially air vents.

If usage of the battery is not planned for a certain time (winter period) reload the battery to avoid a deep discharge.

Do not store while still attached to a tool, this prevents misuse and accidents.

Do not store the battery in places where static electricity is present.

Electrical safety

To reduce the risk of conditions that could potentially cause injury or death, we recommend that individuals with medical implants consult their physician and the manufacturer of the medical implant before operating this product.

Disconnect the battery in case of emergency.

Do not use the product near water or for pond care.

Personal safety

DANGER! Risk of suffocation!

Small parts can be easily swallowed. There is also a risk that the poly-bag can suffocate toddlers. Keep toddlers away when you assemble the product.

Use personal protective equipment.

Wear gloves when cleaning the cutting device.

Always wear eye protection.

Protective equipment such as gloves, non-skid safety shoes, or hearing protection used under appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

Be careful when adjusting the product to prevent fingers from being trapped between moving and fixed parts of the machine, or while assembling both trimmer tubes.

Do not use water or chemical substances to clean the guard or other parts of the trimmer.

Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to ensure the product is in a safe working condition.

Do not disassemble the product beyond its delivery state.

Warning! When wearing hearing protection, and due to the noise produced by the product, the operator may not notice persons approaching.

While operation and transport pay special attention to the hazard for other people.

Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool.

Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication.

2. ASSEMBLY

→ Wait for the cutting filament to stop and remove the battery before you assemble the trimmer.

→ The trimmer may only be used when the protective cover is assembled.

To assemble the tube [Fig. A1]:

1. Slide the tube ① into the threaded collar ② until it engages. Make sure that the tube is firmly located.
2. Close the threaded collar ②.

To assemble the protective cover [Fig. A2]:

1. Slide the protective cover ③ to the trimmer head ④.
2. Tighten the screw ⑤.
3. Put the plant guard ⑥ into the holes ⑦ at the trimmer head ④.

To assemble the additional handle [Fig. A3]:

1. Slide the additional handle ⑪ into the rivet ⑲ (do not push very hard against the rivet). Make sure that the handle is firmly located.
2. Tighten the screw ②.

3. OPERATION

To charge the battery [Fig. 01 / 02]:

→ Make sure that you use the correct mains voltage.

For the GARDENA Battery Trimmer Art. 9827-55 there is no battery in the scope of delivery.

Before you use the battery the first time, the battery must be completely charged.

The lithium-ion battery can be charged in any state of charge and the charging process can be disconnected at any time without to damage the battery (no memory effect).

1. Push both locking buttons ① and remove the battery ⑧ from the batteryholder ⑭.
2. Connect the mains cable Ⓜ to the charger Ⓒ.
3. Connect the mains cable Ⓜ to a 230 V mains socket.
4. Connect the battery charger cable Ⓔ to the battery Ⓑ.

When the charging control lamp Ⓛ at the charger flashes green once per second the battery is being charged.

When the charging control lamp Ⓛ at the charger illuminates green the battery is completely charged (charging time, see 7. TECHNICAL DATA).

1. Examine the charge status regularly while you charge.
2. When the battery Ⓑ is completely charged, disconnect the battery Ⓑ from the charger Ⓒ.
3. Disconnect the charger © from the mains.

Control panel [Fig. 04]:

On / Off button:

→ Push the On / Off button ^s on the control panel.

When the trimmer is switched on, the On-LED Ⓛ illuminates.

The trimmer automatically switches off after 1 minute.

Eco button:

→ Push the Eco button® on the control panel.

When the Eco mode is activated, the LED Ⓛ illuminates.

The Eco mode reduces the engine speed for a maximum battery lifetime.

Work position [Fig. 05]:

→ Hold the product by the additional handle⑪ and the main handle ⑫ so that the trimmer head ④ is tilted a small distance forward.

Avoid contact of the filament with hard objects (walls, stones, fences, etc.) to prevent the filament from welding together or breaking.

To start the trimmer [Fig. 06/07]:

Risk of injury if the trimmer does not stop when you release the start lever.

→ Do not bypass the safety devices or switches. For example, do not attach the start lever to the handle.

To start:

1. Put the battery Ⓑ into the battery holder Ⓓ until it audibly engages.
2. Push the On/Off button S on the control panel Ⓟ until the On-LED ⑬ illuminates green.
3. Hold the additional handle ⑪ with one hand.
4. Hold the main handle ⑫ with the other hand and pull the start lever ⑬. The trimmer starts.

To stop:

1. Release the start lever ⑬. The trimmer stops.
2. Push the On/Off button S on the control panel Ⓟ until the On-LED L5 is off.
3. Push both locking buttons Ⓐ and remove the battery Ⓑ from the battery holder Ⓓ.

To adjust the position of the additional handle [Fig. 08]:

The position of the additional handle can be adjusted to your body height.

1. Open the clamp lever ②4.
2. Slide the additional handle ⑪ to the required position.
3. Close the clamp lever ②4.

To adjust the plant guard:

• Park position [Fig. O9]
• Work position [Fig. O10] → Tilt the plant guard® through 90° into the required position until it locks into place.

To extend the cutting filament (Tip mechanism) [Fig. 011 / 012]:

The tip mechanism operates when the motor operates.

The best result occurs only with the maximum cutting filament length. During first operation, it can be necessary to extend the cutting filament many times.

1. Start the product.
2. Hold the trimmer head ④ parallel to the ground and shortly tap onto a solid surface (avoid constant pressure for extended periods).

The cutting filament ⑭ is automatically extended with a mechanism that can be heard and adjusted to the correct length with the filament limiter ⑮. If necessary tap many times again and again.

4. MAINTENANCE

→ Wait for the cutting filament to stop and remove the battery before you maintain the trimmer.

To clean the Trimmer [Fig. M1/M2]:

→ Do not clean the trimmer with water or with a water jet (in particular high-pressure water jet). → Do not clean with chemicals including petrol or solvents. Some can destroy critical plastic parts.

The airflow slots must always be clean.

1. Clean the airflow slots ⑯ with a soft brush (do not use a screwdriver).
2. Clean all movable parts after each operation. Especially remove any grass and dirt from the protective cover ③.

To clean the battery and the battery charger:

Make sure that the surface and the contacts of the battery and the battery charger always are clean and dry before you connect the battery charger.

Do not use running water.

→ Clean the contacts and the plastic parts with a soft and dry cloth.

To replace the filament cassette [Fig. M3/M4]:

→ Do not use metal cutting parts or replacement parts and accessories not approved by GARDENA. → Only use original GARDENA Filament Cassettes.

You can order the Replacement Filament Cassettes from your GARDENA dealer or directly from the GARDENA Customer Service.

For Art. 9827 PowerCut Li 40/30:

GARDENA Filament Cassette for Trimmers Art. 5307

1. Push in cassette cover ⑰ on the two locking clips ⑱ at the same time and remove it.
2. Remove the filament cassette ⑲.
3. Remove all possible dirt of the filament cassette holder ⑳.
4. Pull approx. 15 cm of the cutting filament ⑭ out of the new filament cassette ⑲ through the hole in the plastic ring ⑳.
5. Put the cutting filament ⑭ through the metal sleeve ⑳.
6. Put the cutting filament ⑭ around the guide pin ②3.
7. Put the filament cassette ⑲ into the filament cassette holder ⑳.
8. Attach the cassette cover ⑰ on the filament cassette holder ⑳ until both locking clips audibly engage.

Make sure that the cutting filament is not squeezed.

If the cassette cover ⑰ cannot be attached, turn the filament cassette ⑱ back and forth, until the filament cassette ⑲ is completely in the filament cassette holder ⑳.

5. STORAGE

To put into storage:

The product must be stored away from children.

1. Remove the battery.
2. Charge the battery.
3. Clean the trimmer, the battery and the battery charger (see 4. MAINTENANCE).
4. Store the trimmer, the battery and the battery charger in a dry, enclosed and frost-free place.

Disposal:

(in accordance with RL2012/19/EC)

The product must not be disposed of to normal household waste. It must be disposed of in line with local environmental regulations.

→ Dispose of the product through or via your municipal recycling collection centre.

Disposal of the battery:

The GARDENA battery contains lithium-ion cells that should not be disposed of with normal household waste at the end of its life.

1. Discharge the lithium-ion cells completely (contact the GARDENA Service).
2. Protect the contacts on the lithium-ion cells against short circuits.
3. Dispose of the lithium-ion cells properly.

6. TROUBLESHOOTING

Wait for the cutting filament to stop and remove the battery before you troubleshoot the trimmer.

		Filament cassette is empty. → Replace the filament cassette (see 4. MAINTENANCE “To replace the filament cassette”).
		Cutting filament is pulled into the cassette or welded. → Pull the cutting filament out of the filament cassette (see above).
Trimmer can no longer be stopped	Start lever is stuck. →	Remove the battery and loosen the start lever.
Cutting filament cannot be extended or is used quickly	Cutting filament became too dry and brittle (e. g. during the winter).	→ Put the filament cassette in water for approx. 10 hours.
	Cutting filament frequently touched hard objects.	→ Prevent the cutting filament from touching hard objects.
