Frequently Asked Questions - OC-4 Kramer

What is the main purpose of the Kramer OC-4?
The OC-4 is a quad-channel video isolator that eliminates hum bars, ground loops, and DC offsets by providing complete electrical isolation between video sources and displays.
How many video signals can the OC-4 handle?
The OC-4 can handle up to four composite video signals simultaneously, each with its own input and output BNC connector.
How do I connect the OC-4?
Connect video sources to the INPUT BNC connectors (channels 1-4) and video acceptors (displays, projectors) to the OUTPUT BNC connectors. Then connect the power cord. Adjust AMP, HF, and GAIN trimmers as needed and use the ground buttons to float input or output grounds.
What do the ground buttons do?
The ground buttons allow you to 'float' the ground on either the input or output side. This helps break ground loops that cause hum. Release the button to float that side.
Can I adjust the video signal level?
Yes. Each channel has AMP (input level), HF (cable equalization/peaking), and GAIN (output level) trimmers. Use a small screwdriver to adjust.
Is the OC-4 rack-mountable?
Yes, it is designed to fit a standard 19-inch rack and occupies 1U of space. An optional RK-1 rack adapter is available.
What type of cables should I use?
Use high-quality coaxial cables with BNC connectors. Kramer recommends their high-resolution cables for best performance.
What is the bandwidth and S/N ratio?
The bandwidth is 20 MHz (-3 dB) and the signal-to-noise ratio is 69 dB, ensuring good video quality.
How do I clean the OC-4?
Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use any liquids, sprays, or abrasive cleaners.
What is the warranty period?
Kramer provides a 7-year warranty on parts and labor from the date of first customer purchase. Contact an authorized dealer for service.

3 Overview

The Kramer OC-1N, OC-2 and OC-4 are high quality video isolator units for one, two and four video or sync signals, respectively. They provide complete isolation between devices thus eliminating video hum, ground loops, and DC offsets which can degrade picture quality. The video isolators let the user select which GROUND becomes floating - input, output, both or none, using the rear panel buttons.

In addition, the Video Isolator:

  • Has a bandwidth of 20MHz (-3dB)
  • Features Opto-Isolator Circuitry providing an extremely linear response and wide frequency range compared to traditional transformer based units
  • Includes Level (Gain) and EQ (Peaking) Controls per channel

Achieving the best performance means:

  • Connecting only good quality connection cables, thus avoiding interference, deterioration in signal quality due to poor matching, and elevated noise levels (often associated with low quality cables)
  • Avoiding interference from neighboring electrical appliances and positioning your Video Isolatoraway from moisture, excessive sunlight and dust
