Frequently Asked Questions - 512 ES VAR Big Wheeler GUDE

How to start the 512 ES VAR Big Wheeler mower?
Ensure the tank contains petrol and the engine oil is at the correct level. Insert the safety key, set the engine brake lever to the start position (if present). Turn the ignition key for electric start, or pull the manual starter if the battery is drained. Consult the manual for specific details.
What type of engine oil to use?
Use a quality 4-stroke engine oil SAE 30 (for ambient temperatures > 5°C) or SAE 10W-30 (all season). The oil capacity is about 0.5 L. Check the level before each use and change the oil after the first 5 hours of operation, then every 25 hours.
How to adjust the cutting height?
The central adjustment is made using a single lever located on the housing. Push the lever to raise the height (tall grass) or lower it for a lower cut. There are 6 marked positions, from 25 mm (closest cut) to 75 mm (high cut). Never do this adjustment with the engine running.
What to do if the mower does not start?
First check for petrol and oil. Make sure the safety key is in place and the engine brake lever is pressed against the handlebar. If the electric start does not work, the battery may be drained; use the manual starter. Clean the spark plug and check the air filter. If the problem persists, consult a professional.
How to clean the housing after use?
After disconnecting the spark plug (cold engine), tilt the mower on the spark plug side to avoid oil leaks. Use a gentle water jet to remove grass and dirt. Avoid directing water into the engine, air filter, and exhaust. Dry thoroughly before storing.
When should the blade be sharpened?
Sharpen the blade at least once per season, or as soon as you notice uneven or shredded cutting. A dull blade strains the engine and damages the lawn. Remove the blade, sharpen it with a file or grinder (30° angle), then balance it before reassembly. Wear gloves.
What is the capacity of the grass catcher?
The fabric or plastic grass catcher has a capacity of 60 litres. It is recommended to empty it regularly to avoid overloading the mower and reducing cutting efficiency. When full, the catcher often blocks; you then need to empty it to continue.
Can the cut grass be used as mulch?
Yes, this mower is compatible with mulching. To do this, install the mulching kit (sold separately) which closes the discharge and the special blade finely chops the grass. The cut grass remains on the lawn as natural fertilizer. Be sure to mow often and not cut too much grass at once.
How to fold the handlebar for storage?
Loosen the knobs or locking screws located on the handlebar joints. Fold the upper part of the handlebar forward or backward depending on the model, until it is parallel to the housing. Some models require unlocking a lever. Consult the manual for the exact diagram.
Where to find spare parts for the 512 ES VAR Big Wheeler?
Spare parts (blade, air filter, spark plug, belt, wheels, etc.) are available at Güde dealers, DIY stores or on the Internet. Use the model number (512 ES VAR Big Wheeler) to find compatible parts. The warranty is 2 years, contact Güde customer service for repairs under warranty.
