I-4. Safety Informaon

In order to ensure the safe operaon of the device and its users, please read and act in accordance with the following safety instrucons.

1. The wireless extender is designed for indoor use only; do not place the wireless extender outdoors.
2. Do not place the wireless extender in or near hot/humid places, such as a kitchen or bathroom.
3. Do not pull any connected cable with force; carefully disconnect it from the wireless extender.
4. The device contains small parts which are a danger to small children under 3 years old. Please keep the wireless extender out of reach of children.
5. Do not place the wireless extender on paper, cloth, or other ammable materials. The wireless extender will become hot during use.
6. There are no user-serviceable parts inside the wireless extender. If you experience problems with the wireless extender, please contact your dealer of purchase and ask for help.
7. The wireless extender is an electrical device and as such, if it becomes wet for any reason, do not aempt to touch it without switching the power supply o. Contact an experienced electrical technician for further help.
8. If you smell burning or see smoke coming from the wireless extender then unplug the extender immediately, as far as it is safely possible to do so. Call your dealer of purchase for help.

I-5. System Requirements

• Exisng wireless home network (2.4GHz or 5GHz).
• Computer with Ethernet port and web browser (Internet Explorer 8 or above, or latest version of Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari).

II. QUICK SETUP

There are two ways you can quickly setup the Wi-Fi extender - using browser-based iQ Setup (II-1. iQ Setup) or using the WPS buon (II-2. WPS Setup).

Note: It is recommended that you plug in the extender close to your router/access point for the setup process. You need to establish a conncon between your extender and router/access point. Aer setup is complete and a conncon is established, you can move the extender to your preferred locaon.

II-1. iQ Setup

Note: Before you use the wireless extender, please make sure your computer is set to use a dynamic IP address. This is a simple procedure, and step by step instructions for how to do this can be found in IV-1-1. How to congure your computer to use a dynamic IP address.

1. Plug the Wi-Fi extender into a power outlet close to the root wireless access point and switch it on. The power LED ( ) will ash while the extender initializes – please wait. The extender is ready when the power LED is on.

1. You can connect to the Wi-Fi extender using a (i.) wired or (ii.) wireless conncon.

Note: Please disable any other Wi-Fi adapters you may have, and/or disconnect/disable any other Ethernet cables/adapters from your computer.

i. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Wi-Fi extender's Ethernet port. Plug the other end of the cable into your computer's Ethernet port.

ii. Use your Wi-Fi device (e.g. computer, tablet, smartphone) to search for a Wi-Fi network with the SSID "Edimax.Setup" and connect.

1. iQ Setup will display all available 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks, listed under "SSID". Please select one or both root Wi-Fi networks that your extender will connect to and subsequently extend. If you don't wish to use either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band you must select "Disable" in order to connue.

Note: If the Wi-Fi network you wish to connect to does not appear, click "Refresh" to search again. Please also be aware that for the 5GHz band, subject to local RF regulaons the EW-7238RPD only supports channels

36, 40, 44 & 48 (Europe) and channels 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161 & 165 (U.S.) If you do not see your 5GHz network listed, you may need to change your router/access point's 5GHz channel.

1. If the network you wish to connect to has a hidden SSID, select “Setup extender manually” for 2.4GHz or 5GHz and enter the SSID manually. Then input a “Device SSID” (name to identify the extender’s Wi-Fi network) and security key informaon. Check the “Hide SSID” box if you wish for the extender’s SSID to remain hidden.

1. For each network you select, you can enter a "Device SSID" which is a name to identify the EW-7238RPD's Wi-Fi network. If the root SSID requires a security key, you will also be required to enter it here.

Note: In the example above, the EW-7238RPD will connect to the root Wi-Fi network OBM-Airport-2.4G. The EW-7238RPD will extend this Wi-Fi network and use the new SSID OBM-Airport-2.4G_2EX to identify itself.

1. Click “Next” to connue and you will be prompted to add hp://edimax.setup to your bookmarks (Internet Explorer and Firefox only). This is the URL to access the extender’s browser based conguraon interface to further congure the sengs of the extender, or to run iQ Setup again. If you do not wish to add this URL to your bookmarks, click “Cancel” – or select “No” from the drop down menu shown below, before you click “Next”.

Note: If the extender cannot obtain an IP address from the router/access point then you will see the screen below. Click the "Stac IP" buon to assign an IP address to the extender and then click "APPLY" to restart the device.

Connection test complete. Wireless security key is correct but Wi-Fi extender can not obtain an IP from your router, you can click "static IP" to assign an IP to extender manually. After IP is input, click "Apply" to restart the device.

Note: When assigning a stac IP address to the wireless extender, you need to ensure that you assign an IP address in the same subnet as your network. For example, if your stac IP is 192.168.9.2 then you need to assign the wireless extender an IP address in the range 192.168.9.x where x = 3 - 254. Please refer to IV-1. Conguring your IP address for more informaon.

Note: To ensure that you assign a correct IP address to the wireless extender, you can check the IP address of your computer and/or router. Please refer to IV-1-2. How to Modify the IP Address of Your PC or Macintosh and IV-1-4. How to Find Your Router's IP Address for guidance on how to do so. Your ISP can also provide you with such informaon as IP address, subnet mask and gateway address.

Note: Aer the system has restarted, if you do not see the congratulaons screen in Step 11, then please skip straight to step 12.

Typically, this may occur for smartphone users who setup the extender via a wireless conncon (as shown in II-1. iQ Setup 2.ii). It is likely that aer the extender restarted, your smartphone re-connected to the Edimax.Setup SSID which is now, upon compleon of setup, redundant.

1. Aer the device has restarted you will see a congratulaons screen as shown below, displaying the name and security key for each of the extender's Wi-Fi networks.

1. The extender is now functional and ready for use. If you wish to move the extender to another locaon, remember to switch o the extender before you unplug it. For the best coverage, select a locaon where the extender's signal strength LED ( ) displays a strong signal. See II-5. Choosing the Best Locaon For Your Extender.

II-2. WPS Setup

Note: The next secon WPS Setup describes an alternate setup method to iQ Setup. If you already completed iQ Setup, it is not necessary to perform WPS Setup.

Note: Please ensure the extender is ready (power LED (on, not ashing) before acvang WPS.

If your wireless router/access point supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) then you can use this method to set up your Wi-Fi extender's 2.4GHz & 5GHz network. The extender's WPS is dependent on your router's access/point WPS – so if you acvate WPS for 2.4GHz Wi-Fi on your router/access point, the extender will connect to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi when you activate its WPS. To additionally set up your extender's 5GHz Wi-Fi you would then need to repeat the process but acvate WPS for 5GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, on your router/access point.

For the EW-7238RPD the WPS setup process is the same for 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz Wi-Fi. Whether the extender connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or 5GHz Wi-Fi is enrely dependent on your router/access point and which of its frequency bands you acvate WPS for.

Note: Please take care not to hold the WPS buon for too long – this may result in inadvertently reseng the extender or router/access point.

1. Press and hold the WPS/Reset button on the wireless router/access point for the correct length of me (check router/access point's user manual) to acvate its WPS for 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

1. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS buon on the extender for two seconds to acvate WPS. The WPS LED ( ) will ash slowly to indicate WPS is acvated (see LED Status).

1. The devices will establish a conncon. When a conncon is successful, the extender's WPS LED ( ) will display on - and remain on for 5 minutes (see I-3. LED Status).

2. Please wait for 5 minutes until the extender's WPS LED ( ) is 0, and repeat this process to set up your dual-band extender's additional second

frequency band. In step 1 please acvate WPS on your router/access point for the alternate frequency 2.4GHz or 5GHz depending on which frequency you previously set up.

Note: Please check the instrucons for your wireless router/access point to conrm how long you need to hold down its WPS buon to acvate WPS for 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Some brands of router/access point may not support WPS for 5Ghz – in this case, please use iQ Setup instead.

II-3. Reseng the Wireless Extender

If you experience problems with your Wi-Fi extender you can reset the extender back to factory default sengs. This resets all sengs back to default.

To reset the extender, press and hold the WPS/Reset buon for 10 seconds until the power LED ( ) is ashing. The extender will re-initialize and the power LED ( ⏻ ) will display on when the extender is ready (see I-3. LED Status).

If the extender's 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi is disconnected from its root network, your browser will forward to the page shown below:

First, please check your WAN connection and make sure your broadband router is working properly. If you want to configure Wi-Fi Extender, please click Go to Web control panel to enter into its web setting page.

The status of the extender will be displayed, please check your WAN conncon and ensure that your router/access point is working properly. To congure the sengs of the extender, click “Go to Web Control Panel” at the top of the screen and you will arrive at the home screen of the browser based conguraon interface (see III. Browser Based Conguraon Interface).

II-5. Choosing the Best Locaon for Your Extender

The best locaon to place the Wi-Fi extender is one which is an open space, roughly in the middle between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone, and where the Wi-Fi extender LED displays “Excellent” signal strength.

Please consider that Wi-Fi performance can be aected by environmental factors such as the thickness and proximity of walls, or interference from other devices such as microwaves or wireless telephones, and choose the locaon of your extender accordingly.

III. BROWSER BASED CONFIGURATION INTERFACE

Once you have setup the wireless extender as detailed in II. Quick Setup or the included QIG, you can further congregate the sengs of the wireless extender or run iQ Setup again using the browser based conguraon interface.

To access the browser based conguraon interface, enter

hp://edimax.setup into the URL bar of a web browser on a computer which is connected to the extender's Wi-Fi network. You will be prompted for a username and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "1234".

III-3. WPS Sengs

Home iQ Setup WPS Settings Advanced Settings

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a simple way to establish connecons between WPS compatible devices. WPS devices feature a WPS funcon which can be acvated by pushing a WPS buon on the device or from within the device's rmware/conguraon interface. When WPS is acvated in the correct manner and at the correct me for two compatible devices, they will automacally connect.

The WPS Sengs page displays sengs for WPS between your extender and a wireless client. For WPS Setup between your extender and router/access point, please refer back to (II-2. WPS Setup).

The wireless extender supports two types of WPS for wireless clients: PBC (Push Buon Conguraon) and PIN code. For PBC you can acvate WPS on the wireless extender by clicking the “Start PBC” buon on the screen.

Note: Click the "Start PBC" buon to activate WPS – do not push the WPS/Reset buon on the extender.

PIN code setup varies slightly in that it requires you to manually enter a PIN code into each device via the WPS Sengs before acvang WPS.

WPS(Wi-Fi Protected Setup) Settings

This page allows you to change the setting for WPS(Wi-Fi Protected Setup).WPS can help your wireless client automatically connect to the Access Point.

Note: WPS function will be disabled if your wireless security uses WEP or WPA (TKIP) encryption.

The WPS LED ( ^WPS ) will ash slowly to indicate WPS is acve. WPS will remain acve for two minutes. Within two minutes, acvate WPS on your client

device (refer to client device's user manual for guidance on how to do so) in order to establish a conncon. The WPS LED ( ) will display ON to indicate a successful conncon, and will remain ON for 5 minutes (see I-3. LED Status).

Tx Power	You can adjust the level of wireless output power as a percentage. Depending on the size of your locaon and required coverage, you may not require 100% output power. Reducing the output power can enhance security since your Wi-Fi signal will not extend to potenal malicious/unknown users in distant areas.
Enable LED O Mode	Check this box to enable “LED O Mode” which allows you to select “Turn o all LED indicators” or “Turn o all LED indicators except the power LED” accordingly.

Note: For stac IP users, the wireless extender needs to have an IP address in the same subnet as your network, in order that you can access the browser based conguraon interface.

For example, if your stac IP is 192.168.9.2 then you need to assign the wireless extender an IP address in the range 192.168.9.x where x = 3 - 254. Each network device has a unique IP address.

Note: To ensure that you assign a correct IP address to the wireless extender, you can also check the IP address of your router. Please refer to IV-1-4. How to Find your Router's IP Address. Your ISP can also provide you with such informaon as IP address, subnet mask and gateway address.

Note: If you are unable to connect to the browser based conguraon interface using "http://edimax.setup", it is possible that you assigned an incorrect IP address to the extender. In this case you can reset the wireless extender back to its default IP address. See II-4. Reseng The Wireless Extender.

The wireless extender's conguraon tools page enables you to back up or restore the sengs, upgrade the rmware and reset or reboot the device. The latest rmware can be downloaded from the Edimax website. You will see the following screen:

Note: Restoring sengs to the factory default will restore all sengs, conguraons and passwords back to the factory default.

Note: You can also reset the device to the factory default by pressing and holding the Reset/WPS buon for at least 10 seconds. See II-3. Reseng The Wireless Extender.

Upgrade Firmware
Browse	Click “Browse” to open a window and locate the rmware le.
CANCEL	Click “CANCEL” to cancel and clear the selected le from the “Browse” box.
APPLY	Click “APPLY” to upgrade to the selected rmware le.A pop up window will ask you to conrm, and inform you that the device may not respond for up to a minute aer the upgrade. Please click “OK”. A status bar will show the progress of the upgrade:11%

Note: It is recommended that you use a wired Ethernet conncon to upload the rmware le.

Note: Do not turn o or disconnect the extender during a rmware upgrade, as this could damage the device.

RebootA system reboot will restart the device without aecng exisng sengs. In the event that the device malfuncons or is not responding, a system reboot is recommended.
APPLY	Click “APPLY” to reboot the system. You will be asked to conrm, and informed that the reboot may take a while. A status bar will indicate the progress of the reboot:System Restarting! Please wait for a while !5%

IV. APPENDIX

IV-1. Conguring your IP address

Before you use the wireless extender, please make sure your computer is set to use a dynamic IP address. This means your computer can obtain an IP address automacally from a DHCP server. This is a simple procedure, which is explained step by step in IV-1-1. How to congregate your computer to use a dynamic IP address.

Note: If your existing network seng is to use a stac IP address, then please and make a note of your stac IP before you switch to a dynamic IP address. This is for your convenience if you wish to modify the IP address of the wireless extender in future.

You can nd your exisng stac IP by following the steps in IV-1-2 How to modify the IP address of your PC or Macintosh. Your stac IP will be displayed in:

• Step 2 (Windows XP)
• Step 2 (Windows Vista)
• Step 6 (Windows 7)
• Step 7 (Windows 8)
• Step 5 (Mac)

Note: Also make a note of your stac IP if you are going to modify the IP of your PC or Mac as shown in IV-1-2. How to modify the IP address of your PC or Macintosh.

Unfortunately, not all networks support DHCP capability. In this case, you need to use a stac IP address for the wireless extender and your PC or Macintosh. The wireless extender uses the default IP address 192.168.9.2, which may not be in the same IP address subnet of your network; meaning you are unable to access the browser based conguraon interface. So, you need to modify the IP address of your PC or Macintosh to 192.168.9.x (x = 1 - 254) in order to access the browser-based conguraon interface.

The procedure for doing so varies across dierent operang systems; please

follow the guide appropriate for your operang system in IV-1-2. How to modify the IP address of your PC or Macintosh.

Note: For guidance on how to assign a new IP address to the wireless extender, so that it is within the same IP address subnet of your network, please refer to III-4-3. Administraon Ulity. In cases where you need to modify the IP of your PC or Macintosh in order to access the browser based conguraon interface, if the default IP of the wireless extender remains unchanged, you may need to repeat this process and modify the IP of your PC or Macintosh every me you wish to conjure the wireless extender.

IV-1-1. How to Congure Your Computer to Use a Dynamic IP Address

Please follow the instrucons appropriate for your operang system.

1. Click the "Start" buon (it should be located in the lower-le corner of your computer), then click "Control Panel". If you are experiencing problems with your wireless extender, please refer to this troublesome guide before contacting your dealer of purchase for help.

It should be “Connected” – if it is “Disconnected” then this means the wireless extender is notconnected to your router/access point.
My network is using a stac IP address, how do I assign an IP address to my wireless extender?	You can modify the IP address of the wireless bridge using the browser based conguraon interface.Please refer to III-4-3. Administraon Ulity.
My wireless extender has a poor signal from my access point/router.	The best locaon to place the Wi-Fi extender is one which is an open space, roughly in the middle between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone, and where the Wi-Fi extender LED displays “Excellent” signal strength. See II-5. Choosing the Best Locaon for Your Wi-Fi Extender.a. Keep the extender away from other radio devices such as microwaves or wireless telephones.b. Do not put the extender in the corner of a room or under/nearby metal.c. It is recommended to plug the extender directly into a wall socket. If it is necessary to use a mulple socket adapter then avoid placing the adapter on the oor.d. Ensure there are as few obstacles as possible between the extender and the access point/router.
Can I use the same SSID as my current gateway router for my Wi-Fi extender?	Yes, but it is not recommended as it will be dicult to disnguish between two SSIDs with the same name.

IV-3. Glossary

Default Gateway (Wireless bridge): Every non-access point IP device needs to congregate a default gateway's IP address. When the device sends out an IP packet, if the desnaon is not on the same network, the device has to send the packet to its default gateway, which will then send it out towards the desnaon.

DHCP: Dynamic Host Conguraon Protocol. This protocol automacally gives every computer on your home network an IP address.

DNS Server IP Address: DNS stands for Domain Name System, which allows Internet servers to have a domain name (such as www.Broadbandaccess

point.com) and one or more IP addresses (such as 192.34.45.8). A DNS server keeps a database of Internet servers and their respective domain names and IP addresses, so that when a domain name is requested (as in typing "Broadbandaccess point.com" into your Internet browser), the user is sent to the proper IP address. The DNS server IP address used by the computers on your home network is the location of the DNS server your ISP has assigned to you.

DSL Modem: DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. A DSL modem uses your existing phone lines to transmit data at high speeds.

Ethernet: A standard for computer networks. Ethernet networks are connected by special cables and hubs, and move data around at up to 10/100 million bits per second (Mbps).

IP Address and Network (Subnet) Mask: IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address consists of a series of four numbers separated by periods, that idenes a single, unique Internet computer host in an IP network. Example: 192.168.2.1. It consists of 2 porons: the IP network address, and the host idener.

The IP address is a 32-bit binary paern, which can be represented as four cascaded decimal numbers separated by “.”: aaa.aaa.aaa.aaa, where each “aaa” can be anything from 000 to 255, or as four cascaded binary numbers separated by “.”: bbbbbbbb.bbbbbbbb.bbbbbbbb.bbbbbbbb, where each “b” can either be 0 or 1.

A network mask is also a 32-bit binary paern, and consists of consecutive leading 1's followed by consecutive trailing 0's, such as 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000. Therefore sometimes a network mask can also be described simply as "x" number of leading 1's. When both are represented side by side in their binary forms, all bits in the IP address that correspond to 1's in the network mask become part of the IP network address, and the remaining bits correspond to the host ID.

For example, if the IP address for a device is, in its binary form, 11011001.10110000.10010000.00000111, and if its network mask is, 11111111.11111111.11110000.00000000 It means the device's network address is 11011001.10110000.10010000.00000000, and its host ID is, 00000000.00000000.00000000.00000111. This is a convenient and ecient method for access points to route IP packets to their desnaon.

ISP Gateway Address: (see ISP for denion). The ISP Gateway Address is an IP address for the Internet access point located at the ISP's oce.

ISP: Internet Service Provider. An ISP is a business that provides connectivity to the Internet for individuals and other businesses or organizaons.

LAN: Local Area Network. A LAN is a group of computers and devices connected together in a relatively small area (such as a house or an oce). Your home network is considered a LAN.

MAC Address: MAC stands for Media Access Control. A MAC address is the hardware address of a device connected to a network. The MAC address is a unique idener for a device with an Ethernet interface. It is comprised of two parts: 3 bytes of data that corresponds to the Manufacturer ID (unique for each manufacturer), plus 3 bytes that are oen used as the product's serial number.

NAT: Network Address Translaon. This process allows all of the computers on your home network to use one IP address. Using the broadband access point's NAT capability, you can access the Internet from any computer on your home network without having to purchase more IP addresses from your ISP.

Port: Network Clients (LAN PC) uses port numbers to disnguish one network applicaon/protocol over another. Below is a list of common applicaons and protocol/port numbers:

Access point: A access point is an intelligent network device that forwards packets between dierent networks based on network layer address informaon such as IP addresses.

Subnet Mask: A subnet mask, which may be a part of the TCP/IP informaon provided by your ISP, is a set of four numbers (e.g. 255.255.255.0) congured like an IP address. It is used to create IP address numbers used only within a parcular network (as opposed to valid IP address numbers recognized by the Internet, which must be assigned by InterNIC).

TCP/IP, UDP: Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Unreliable Datagram Protocol (UDP). TCP/IP is the standard protocol for data transmission over the Internet. Both TCP and UDP are transport layer protocol. TCP performs proper error detection and error recovery, and thus is reliable. UDP on the other hand is not reliable. They both run on top of the IP (Internet Protocol), a network layer protocol.

WAN: Wide Area Network. A network that connects computers located in geographically separate areas (e.g. dierent buildings, cies, countries). The Internet is a wide area network.

Web-based management Graphical User Interface (GUI): Many devices support a graphical user interface that is based on the web browser. This means the user can use the familiar Netscape or Microso Internet Explorer to Control/congure or monitor the device being managed.

Federal Communicaon Commission Interference Statement
