Frequently Asked Questions - DPP-FP97 SONY

How do I clean the printer?

Use the supplied cleaning cartridge and cleaning sheet. Remove the ink ribbon and paper tray, insert the cleaning cartridge and sheet, then press PRINT. The printer will automatically clean itself.

What should I do if a paper jam occurs?

Turn off the printer, open the paper tray compartment, gently remove any jammed paper, and close the compartment. If the jam persists, refer to the troubleshooting section of the manual.

Can I connect a Bluetooth device to the DPP-FP97?

Yes, you can use the optional DPPA-BT1 Bluetooth USB adaptor (not available in all regions). Insert it into the PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector to print from Bluetooth-compliant devices.

How do I print from a PictBridge digital camera?

Connect your PictBridge-compliant camera to the printer's PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector using the USB cable. The printer will detect the camera, and you can select images on the camera to print.

Does the printer support red-eye correction?

Yes, press the AUTO TOUCH-UP button for automatic red-eye correction, or manually adjust it from the Edit menu under Red-eye Correction.

What types of memory cards are supported?

The printer supports Memory Stick (standard and Duo), SD memory Card, xD-Picture Card, and CompactFlash. Adapters may be needed for mini/micro cards.

How do I connect the printer to a PC?

Install the included printer driver and PMB software from the CD-ROM. Connect the printer to your PC via the USB cable, then select the printer in the software to print.

Can I print directly from a high-definition television?

Yes, connect your TV to the printer's HDMI OUT connector using an HDMI cable. You can then view images on the TV and use the TV remote to control printing if the TV supports BRAVIA Sync.

What does the 'AUTO TOUCH-UP' feature do?

It automatically corrects common photo issues such as exposure, focus, white balance, red-eye, and performs skin smoothing and auto dodging.

How do I save edited images to a memory card?

After editing an image, select Save from the Edit menu. Choose the destination (internal memory or a memory card) and confirm. The edited image is saved as a new file without overwriting the original.

Notes on LCD screen

• The displayed image on the screen is not identical in picture quality and colors with the printed image because display methods or profiles differ. Please regard the displayed image as just a reference.
• Do not press against the LCD screen. The screen may be discolored and that may cause a malfunction.
• Exposing the LCD screen to direct sunlight for a long period may cause malfunctions.
• The LCD screen is manufactured using extremely high-precision technology, so over 99.99% of the pixels are operational for effective use. However, there may be some tiny black points and/or bright points (white, red, blue or green in color) that constantly appear on the LCD screen. These points are normal in the manufacturing process and do not affect the printing in any way.
• Images may trail across on the LCD screen in a cold location. This is not a malfunction.

1 Handle

As illustrated below, raise the handle when you carry the printer.

When you use the printer, close the handle to its original position.

Notes

• When you carry the printer, make sure to remove memory cards, external devices, the paper tray, AC adaptor, and other cables. Otherwise malfunctions may occur.
• Set the LCD panel to its original position.

Setting the ink ribbon

1 Pull and open the ink ribbon compartment door.
2 Insert the ink ribbon in the direction of the arrow until it clicks into place.

Removing the ink ribbon

Push up the blue eject lever, and remove the used ink ribbon.

Notes

• Do not touch the ink ribbon or store the ink ribbon in a dusty location. Fingerprints or dust on the ink ribbon may result in imperfect printing.
• Do not rewind the ink ribbon and use the rewound ink ribbon for printing. Otherwise, proper printing results will not be obtained, or a malfunction may occur. If the ink ribbon does not click into place, remove it and then re-insert it. Only when the ink ribbon is too slack to be loaded, keep pressing the core of the ribbon and wind the ink ribbon in the direction of the arrow to remove the slack.

• Do not disassemble the ink ribbon.
• Do not pull out the ribbon from the ink ribbon.
• Do not remove the ink ribbon while printing.
• Avoid placing the ink ribbon in a location subject to high temperatures, high humidity, excessive dust or direct sunlight. Please store it in a cool and dark place and use it within a short period from the date of production. Depending on the storage conditions, the ink ribbon may deteriorate. Use of such an ink ribbon may affect the printed results, for which we cannot guarantee or compensate.

Inserting the print paper

1 Open the paper tray cover.

Hold the parts on both sides of the paper tray cover (shown with arrows) and open the paper tray cover.

2 Set the print paper into the paper tray.

Notes

• You can set up to 20 sheets of print paper. Riffle the print paper thoroughly. Insert the print paper with the protective sheet facing up. Remove the protective sheet from the tray.
• If there is no protective sheet, insert the print paper into the paper tray with its printing surface (the side with no imprint) facing up.
• Do not touch the printing surface. Fingerprints or contamination on the printing surface may result in imperfect printing.
• Do not bend the print paper, or cut the print paper from the perforations before printing.

• To avoid paper jam or malfunctions of the printer, make sure of the following before printing:
- Do not write or type on the print paper. - Do not attach a sticker or stamps on the print paper.
- When adding print paper to the paper tray, be sure that the total number of print paper sheets does not exceed 20 sheets.
- Do not insert different types of print paper together into the paper tray.
- Do not print on used print paper. Printing an image twice on the same paper will not make the printed image thicker.
- Use the print paper for this printer only.
- Do not use print paper ejected without printing.

Notes on storing the print paper

• To store print paper in the tray, remove the paper tray from the printer and close the slide door of the paper tray.
- Avoid storing the paper with the printed faces touching each other or in contact with rubber or plastic products, including vinyl chloride or plasticizer for an extended period of time; color changes or deterioration of the printed image may occur.
- Avoid placing the print paper in a location subject to high temperatures, high humidity, excessive dust or direct sunlight.
- When you are going to store partially-used print paper, store it in its original bag or a similar container.

Connecting to the AC power source

1 Insert the plug of the AC adaptor into the DC IN 24 V jack on the back of the printer.
2 Connect one plug of the AC power cord to the connector of the AC adaptor and the other plug to the wall outlet.

Notes

• Do not place the printer in an unstable location such as on a wobbly table.
• Leave enough room around the printer. The print paper emerges from the back a few times during printing. Keep 10cm (13/32 inches) or more space at the rear of the printer.
• Connect the AC adaptor to an easily accessible wall outlet close by. If trouble occurs while using the adaptor, immediately shut off the power by disconnecting the plug from the wall outlet.
• Do not short the plug of the AC adaptor with a metallic object, as this may cause a malfunction.
• Do not use the AC adaptor placed in a narrow space, such as between a wall and furniture.
• When you have finished using the AC adaptor, disconnect the AC power cord from the DC IN 24 V jack of the printer and from the AC power sources.
• The printer is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the printer itself has been turned off.
• A socket outlet should be as close as possible to the unit and easily accessible.

To use your Printer abroad - Power sources

You can use your Printer and the AC Adaptor (supplied) in any country or region where the power supply is within 100 V to 240 V AC, 50/60 Hz.

Do not use an electronics transformer (travel converter), as this may cause a malfunction.

Operations in the initial state

When the photo printer is turned on without a memory card inserted or an external device connected, the initial display below appears on the screen.

ENTER: Displays image stored in the internal memory.

When the printer is not operated for 5 seconds, demo mode is displayed. If any button other than the ⏻ (on/standby) button is pressed, the screen returns to the initial display. If you press ENTER, the images in the internal memory are displayed.

If a memory card is inserted, or an external device is connected, the images from the memory card, the external device, or the internal memory are displayed.

Index View

Displays a list of the images contained on the selected medium (Index View). You can switch the index view by selecting "Number Order" or "Shoot. Date" on the Index View menu.

Switching the image preview view and index view

You can switch the display as follows:

• To display the index view

In an image preview view, press (Index View)/(Reduce).

When an image is enlarged, press

so that the image is reduced to its original scale and then the index view is displayed.

• To display an image preview view

In the index view, press /// to move the cursor to the image whose preview view you want to display and press ENTER or Enlarge).

Enlarging an image

Keep pressing ⒽEnlarge). The image is enlarged up to 5 times the original scale.

Basic printing

Inserting a memory card

With the label side facing up, insert a memory card (“Memory Stick” media, “Memory Stick Duo” media, CompactFlash card, SD memory Card or an xD-Picture Card) that contains the images for printing into the proper slot until firmly into place. For the types of memory cards you can use with the printer, please see pages 79 to 81.

Tip

To print an image in the internal memory, turn on the printer, and press ENTER without a memory card inserted or external device connected.

To eject a memory card

Remove the memory card from the slot slowly in the reverse direction it was inserted.

Notes

• The printer supports both standard and small sizes "Memory Stick" media. A "Memory Stick Duo" media adaptor is not necessary.
• The SD memory Card/xD-Picture Card dual-format slot automatically detects card type.

Printing selected images

This section explains how to display the images of a memory card, an external device, or internal memory on the printer's LCD screen and print the selected images (direct printing). For how to print from an external device, see page 48.

1 Press ⏻ (on/standby) to turn on the printer.

The standby indicator of the printer lights in yellow green. An image stored on the memory card inserted or external device connected is displayed on the LCD screen. By pressing ENTER without a memory card inserted or an external device connected, you can display an image from the printer's internal memory.

2 Press ◀/▷ to display the image that you want to print.
3 Set the print quantity.

To print one sheet of the displayed image, skip this procedure and go on to the next step.

Press ENTER to display the print quantity indication. Then press / to specify the number of copies and press ENTER.

4 Press PRINT.

While the PRINT button lights in green, the printer is ready for printing. All the images with print quantity settings are printed.

To print multiple images

Repeat steps 2 and 3.

To change the print quantity

Display the image whose print quantity you want to change, and press ENTER to display the print quantity indication. Then press / to set the print quantity and then press ENTER.

If you select "0," printing is canceled.

Notes

• Never move or turn off the printer while it is printing; the ink ribbon may become stuck or paper jam may occur. In case you turn off the power, keep the paper tray inserted and turn on the printer. After the paper is ejected, resume printing.
• Do not remove the paper tray during printing. Otherwise, malfunction may occur.
• The print paper emerges a few times during printing. Do not touch nor pull the emerged paper.
• If print paper is jammed, see page 76.

On selecting input

The printer is not equipped with the input select switch. When you connect a memory card or an external device with the printer, the images of the connected memory card or external device are displayed automatically. If multiple memory cards or an external device are connected, the media first connected has the priority. The images in the internal memory are displayed when you press ENTER without inserting a memory card or connecting an external device.

When you turn on the printer with multiple media being inserted or connected, the printer detects the media in the order of “Memory Stick” media, CompactFlash card, SD memory Card, xD-Picture Card, the external device connected to PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector, and the computer.

Correcting a failed photo automatically (AUTO TOUCH-UP)

1 Select the image that you want to adjust and then press AUTO TOUCH-UP.

Adjustment of the selected image starts. The adjustment results will be displayed on the screen. When a human face is detected, the face is displayed with a frame as the adjustments proceed.

To check the adjustment result more clearly:

Press ⊕ to enlarge the image. (The image will not be enlarged when printed.)

To display the original image (before adjustments) again

Press AUTO TOUCH-UP. To display the adjusted image, press AUTO TOUCH-UP again.

If you have set a print quantity for multiple images

All the images with print quantity settings are adjusted. To display other images, press ◀/▷.

To change the print quantity

Press ENTER to display the print quantity indication. Then press / to set the print quantity and then press ENTER.

2 Press PRINT.

Printing of the selected image(s) starts.

Saving a corrected image

Press MENU, and the confirmation dialog box is displayed. Press ◀/▷ to select “Yes,” and then press ENTER. An adjusted image is saved as a new file. (page 25)

Tip

Adjustment takes effect only on the image being printed. The original image will not be adjusted.

Notes

• After the Auto Touch-up adjustment, you cannot make a trimming print of an image that has been enlarged by pressing ⊕
• Depending on the image, the Auto Touch-up adjustment may not take effect properly. In this case, select “Adjust” from the Edit menu to adjust the image quality manually (page 22).
• Do not remove the memory card or external device during the Auto Touch-up adjustment.
• Depending on the condition of the image, the correction may take some time.

The automatic red-eye correction function of this printer uses the technology of FotoNation Inc. in the U.S.A.

SILKYPIX®

The “Skin Smoothing,” “WB Correction,” and “Auto Dodging” correction functions of the printer use the technology of Ichikawa Soft Laboratory.

Editing an image

Enlarging and reducing ge size

1 From the Edit menu (page 18), press ◀/▷ to select 🔒 (Enlarge) to enlarge an image or (Reduce) to reduce it, and then press ENTER. Each time you press the button, the image becomes larger or smaller. You can also use the Ⓧ(zoom in) and (zoom out) buttons to enlarge or reduce the image size:

: down to 60%

2 Press PRINT.

Note

The picture quality of an enlarged image may deteriorate depending on its size.

Moving an image

1 From the Edit menu (page 18), press ◀/▷ to select ▼ (Move) and then press ENTER. The ◀/▷/△/▽ indicators appear on the left/right/above/below the image and you can move the image.
2 Press /// to move an image.
3 Press ENTER. The image is fixed in its current position.
4 Press PRINT.

Rotating an image

1 From the Edit menu (page 18), press ◀/▷ to select (Rotate) and then press ENTER.

The Rotate menu is displayed.

2 Press / to select the direction to rotate the image and then press ENTER.

• Rotate 90 Clockwise: Each time you press ENTER, the image rotates 90^ clockwise.
• Rotate 90 Counterclockwise: Each time you press ENTER, the image rotates 90^ counterclockwise.

3 Press PRINT.

Adjusting an image

1 From the Edit menu (page 18), press ◀/▷ to select (Adjust) and then press ENTER.

The Adjust menu is displayed.

2 Press / to select the desired adjustment tool and press ENTER.

The adjustment screen of the selected tool appears.

When "Brightness" is selected.

Press ◀/▷ to adjust an image while checking the level.

The image before adjustment is displayed on the left half of the screen, and the adjusted image is displayed on the right.

• Brightness: Press to brighten the picture or to darken it.
• Tint: Press to make the picture greenish or to make it reddish.
• Saturation: Press to deepen the colors or to lighten them.
• Sharpness: Press ▷ to sharpen the outlines or ◀ to soften them.

3 Press ENTER.

The adjustment takes effect.

4 Press PRINT.

Adding a special filter to an image

1 From the Edit menu (page 18), press ◀/▷ to select (Filter) and then press ENTER.

The Filter menu is displayed.

2 Press / to select the filter you want to add to the image.

• No Filter: No special filter is used on the image (default setting).
• Single Color: Changes all the colors except for the one specified color into gray scale.
• Painting: Makes the image look like a painted picture.

SILKYPIX®

The "Painting" filter of the printer is uses the technology of Ichikawa Soft Laboratory.

• Cross Filter: Adds a cross, starburst effect to the light source to print an image with a sparkling impression.
• Partial Color: Makes the surroundings of the subject monochrome to emphasize the subject in the center.
• Sepia: Changes the image to look like an old photograph with faded colors.
• Monochrome: Changes the image into a black and white picture.

- Fish-eye: Makes the image look like a photo taken with a fish-eye lens.

3 Press ENTER.

The filter takes effect.

When you have selected "Cross Filter," "Painting," or "Single Color," the setting window is displayed. Move to the next step.

4 Set the level and range.

Cross Filter

①Select “Level” with / and press ENTER, adjust the level with / , and then press ENTER.

The higher the level you set, the more light sources become sparkling.

②Select “Length” with / and press ENTER, adjust the length of light with / , and then press ENTER.

■ Painting

Press / to adjust the line length and then press ENTER.

■ Single Color

To select a color from specified colors

Press ◀/▷ to select the color that you want to retain and then press ENTER.

The image becomes monochrome while the specified color remains.

To select a color from a photo

①Press / to select “Select a favorite color,” then press ENTER. The image is displayed with the color-pick tool.

②Press /// to specify the portion that contains your favorite color, and then press ENTER.

④Press ENTER to fix the color and range. The image becomes monochrome while the specified color remains.

5 Press PRINT.

Tip

To redo the above operations, select "No Filter" and then redo the operations.

Correcting the red-eye phenomenon

When pressing AUTO TOUCH-UP cannot reduce the red-eye phenomenon of a subject shot by flash, you can adjust the image manually.

Notes

• If you perform additional editing, such as enlarging, reducing the image size, rotating or moving an image, after the red-eye correction, the red-eye correction may not take effect. Perform the red-eye correction after these editorial operations.
• If a subject face is small, the red-eye correction may not work.

1 From the Edit menu (page 18), press ◀/▷ to select (Red-eye Correction) and then press ENTER. The adjustment frame appears on the image, which indicates the range for red-eye correction.

2 Adjust the position and size of the adjustment frame.

Make the red-eye correction for the right and left eyes separately.

■ To move the adjustment frame

①Press ◀/▷ to select ⏻ (Move) and press ENTER.
②Move the frame with /// .

The frame moves in the selected direction.

③Press ENTER.

The frame is fixed in the current position.

■ To change the size of the adjustment frame

Press ◀/▷ to select ✅ (Enlarge) or 🔼 (Reduce) and press ENTER.

Each time you press ENTER, the frame becomes larger or smaller.

You can also enlarge or reduce the size by pressing the zoom in) or zoom out) buttons on the printer.

Tip

Make the size of the adjustment frame 2 to 7 times as large as the eye size.

3 Press ◀/▷ to select OK and press ENTER. The range of red-eye correction is enlarged.
4 Press ENTER.

The adjustment takes effect.

The Red-eye correction menu is displayed.

To make a red-eye correction for other eyes, repeat steps 2 to 4.

5 Press ◀/▷ to select ↻ and press ENTER.

The Edit menu is displayed again.

6 Press PRINT.

To reset the adjustment

Press CANCEL in step 5 instead of ENTER.

Printing an edited image

1 Press PRINT.

The print quantity indication is displayed.

2 Set the print quantity.

• To increase the print quantity one by one, press repeatedly.
• To reduce the print quantity one by one, press briefly repeatedly.
• To reset the print quantity to 1, press for more than two seconds.

3 Press PRINT.

Saving an edited image

1 Select (Save) and then press ENTER.

The dialog box used to specify the destination folder is displayed.

2 Select the destination where you want to save the image.

Press / to select “Internal memory,” “Memory Stick” media, “CompactFlash,” “SD memory Card,” “xD-Picture Card,” or “External Device,” and press ENTER.

Tip

When you select “External Device,” a dialog box for selecting a drive may be displayed. Follow the instructions on the screen to select the destination drive.

The dialog box used for setting a date is displayed. You can save the set date with the image.

3 Set date.

Press / to select an item (month, day, and year), and press / to select the number, and then press ENTER.

The image edited by the Edit or CreativePrint menu is saved as a new image. The dialog box used to specify the new image number (folder number-file number) is displayed.

Tip

The original image will not be overwritten.

4 Press ENTER.

Notes

• While the image is being saved, do not turn off the printer or remove a memory card or external device from the printer. The printer, memory card, USB memory, or external device may be damaged or the data may be lost.
• You cannot save built-in image for the printer's demo mode.

Performing "CreativePrint"

Using the CreativePrint menu

To undo the operation midway

Press CANCEL The window of the previous step is displayed. Depending on the step, you may not be able to undo the operation.

To exit the CreativePrint menu

• Press MENU in the middle of the operations and select "CreativePrint Complete." Then press ENTER.
• In the image preview view, press ◀/▷/△/▽ to select and press ENTER.

The dialog box for saving an image may be displayed (page 25).

Tips

• You can press MENU while performing CreativePrint and set part of the Print setup menu items.
• The CreativePrint menu allows you to input characters using the keyboard, superimpose a handwritten message, and input a preinstalled phrase (pages 28, 31).

Making a Scrapbook

1 From the CreativePrint menu (page 19), press ◀/▷/△/▽ to select "Scrapbook," then press ENTER. The window for selecting a theme is displayed.
2 Press /// to select the desired theme, then press ENTER.

The window used for selecting templates of the selected theme is displayed.

3 Press // to select the desired template, then press ENTER.

A preview of the selected template is displayed.

4 Select an image.

When you select a template with multiple images, repeat the procedures below to select an image for each area.

①Press /// to select an image area, then press ENTER.

The index view is displayed.

②Press /// to select the desired image, then press ENTER.

The window used for adjusting the image is displayed.

5 Adjust the image size, position or others of the selected image.

Press ◀/▷ to select the desired adjustment item, then press ENTER.

(Rotate 90 Clockwise), and press ENTER.

To move the stamp, press ◀/▷ to select and press ENTER. To enlarge or reduce the size of the stamp, press ◀/▷ to select or and press ENTER.

When the adjustments are complete, press ◀/▷ to select 🔍 (Stamp) and press ENTER. Then perform steps ⑤ through ⑦. The stamp is superimposed.

■ Superimposing characters

①Press /// to select T(Text) and then press ENTER.
②Press / to select [Keyboard], and then press ENTER.

The keyboard is displayed.

Character input box

③Input characters.

Press /// to select the desired character and then press ENTER.

The selected characters are displayed in the character input box.

Up to approximately 50 characters can be entered. You can input alphanumeric characters and symbols only.

• To change among characters or symbols

Press /// to select [A/a/@] and then press ENTER repeatedly to change among small letters, capital letters, and symbols.

• To delete a character

Press ◀/▷/△/▽ to select [◀] or [▶] and then press ENTER repeatedly so that the cursor in the character input box moves just to the right of the character that you want to delete. Press ◀/▷/△/▽ to select [Delete] and then press ENTER. Each time you press ENTER, the character to the left of the cursor is deleted.

• To utilize the history

Press /// to select [] or [] and then press ENTER to display and utilize the characters you have input in the past (history).

- To change the font

Press /// to select [Font] and then press ENTER. Each time you press ENTER, the font changes. You can use only one font for a sequence of characters input.

④When you finish entering characters, press /// to select OK and then press ENTER.

The color selection window is displayed.

⑤Press /// to select the desired color for the characters and then press ENTER.

The input characters are displayed in the center of the image preview.

⑥Adjust the position and size of the characters.

For how to adjust the characters, see page 27.

⑦Press ◀/▷/Δ/∇ to select OK and then press ENTER.

The input characters display are fixed in place.

Pressing ENTER saves the input characters in the printer's memory. You can register a maximum of 10 sentences that you can reuse.

8 Press PRINT.

Making a Calendar

1 From the CreativePrint menu (page 19), press ◀/▷/△/▽ to select "Calendar," then press ENTER.

The window used for selecting the calendar template, is displayed.

2 Press /// to select the desired template, and then press ENTER.

The preview of the selected template is displayed.

5 Set the calendar.

①Press /// to select the calendar area and press ENTER. The calendar setting window is displayed.

②Press / to select the item that you want to set, and then press ENTER.

Superimposing a Handwritten message, Stamp or Preinstalled phrase on an image

Tip

When creating a new handwritten message or illustration, draw a message or illustration with a black ink pen on a sheet of white paper, shoot it with a digital camera, and then save it on the destination that contains the image for background.

On the history of handwritten message or input messages

A total of up to 12 handwritten illustrations or input messages are automatically saved as the history. (When the saved messages exceed 12, the oldest one will be deleted.) You can utilize handwritten illustrations or input messages by recalling the history.

Making a Layout print

Making an ID Photo

1 From the CreativePrint menu (page 19), press ◀/▷/△/▽ to select ID Photo, then press ENTER. The window used for setting the height and width of an ID photo is displayed.

Tip

You can set a maximum size of 7.0 (width) × 9.0 (height) cm.

2 Press /// to select the item that you want to adjust, and press ENTER.

• To specify the unit: Select the text box at the left of the photo frame. You can select either "cm" or "inch."
• To specify the height: Select the figure box at the right of the photo frame.
• To specify the width: Select the figure box in the upper of the photo frame.

3 Press / to set the size or unit and then press ENTER.

The layout image of the selected size is displayed.

4 If you want to specify the other size, repeat steps 2 and 3.

5 Press ◀/▷/△/▽ to select OK and press ENTER.

The window for selecting an image is displayed.

6 Press // to select the desired image, and then press ENTER.

The window used for adjusting the image is displayed.

Performing Batch Print (Index Print/DPOF Print/Print All)

- Index Print

You can print a list (index) of all the images stored in a memory card, an external device, or the printer's internal memory which allows you to check the contents of the selected media easily.

The number of split panes on a sheet will be calculated automatically. Images are printed in each split pane.

- Print All

You can print all the images stored on a memory card or an external device at one time.

- DPOF Print

The images which are DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) preset for printing are displayed with the print mark (in an image preview. You can print those images at one time. The images are printed with the preset number of copies in the order they were displayed.

Notes

• For how to preset images for printing, refer to the manual of your digital camera.
• Some types of digital cameras do not support the DPOF function, or the printer may not support some of the functions of the digital camera.

1 From the menu, select (Batch Print) and then press ENTER. The Batch Print menu is displayed.

2 Press / to select "Index Print," "DPOF Print," or "Print All" and then press ENTER.

The confirmation dialog box is displayed.

Note

If there are no DPOF preset images when you select "DPOF Print," an error message will be displayed.

3 Press ◀/▷ to select "Yes" to start printing or "No" to cancel printing, and then press ENTER.

When you select "Yes" printing starts.

Reserving printing

During a slideshow, press ENTER and the displayed image will be reserved to be printed. If you have selected the “Auto2 Creative” switch option, you cannot reserve an image for printing.

To stop a slideshow

Press CANCEL.

Note

Depending on the image, it may take time to be displayed.

Printing

During a slideshow, press PRINT.

The print preview of the displayed image will appear.

When an image is reserved to be printed, you can check the print preview by pressing ◀/▷.

Press PRINT again so that printing starts.

After printing is completed, slideshow resumes.

File operations

Copying images

You can copy an image from a memory card or the printer's internal memory to another memory card, the internal memory, or an external device connected to the PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector.

To copy an image from the printer's internal memory

Turn on the printer without a memory card inserted or an external device connected.

Press ENTER to display the images in the internal memory, and then start the procedures below. After you select the desired images to be copied in step 3, prepare the destination media by inserting a memory card or connecting an external device.

1 From the menu, press ◀/▷ to select □ (File operation) and then press ENTER.

The File operation menu is displayed (page 19).

2 Press / to select “Copy all files” or “Copy selected files” and press ENTER.

• When “Copy all files” is selected, skip to step 5.
• When “Copy selected files” is selected, the index view of the memory card, internal memory, or external device is displayed.

3 Press /// to select the desired image and press ENTER.

To copy multiple images, repeat this step.

To cancel the selection

Press /// to select the image you want to cancel, and press ENTER again.

To copy an image from the printer's internal memory

After you select an image to be copied, connect the destination memory card or external device where the image is to be saved.

4 Press MENU.

The dialog box to select the destination is displayed.

5 Press / to select “Internal memory,” “Memory Stick” media, “CompactFlash,” “SD memory Card,” “xD-Picture Card” or “External Device” and press ENTER.

Tip

When you select “External Device,” a dialog box for selecting a drive may be displayed. Follow the instructions on the screen to select the destination drive.

Note

You cannot copy an image onto the same memory card or external device containing the image to be copied.

6 Press / to select the desired folder and press ENTER.

The selected images are copied to the destination folder.

Tips

• You can select a folder number of the destination. If there is no such folder at the destination, a new folder is created.
• To exit the File operation menu midway, press CANCEL.

Notes

• When copying an image to the internal memory, an image of a big size will be converted into an image equal to approximately 2 000 000 pixies. This conversion does not affect the printed picture quality.
• If the internal memory becomes full, an error message will be displayed on the LCD screen. Follow the procedures described in “Deleting

selected images" on page 38 to delete unnecessary images from the internal memory.

- While copying images, do not turn off the printer or remove the memory card or external device from the printer. The printer, memory card, or external device may be damaged or the data may be lost.

Deleting selected images

You can select and delete images stored on a memory card or the printer's internal memory.

Note

If no memory card is inserted, images in the internal memory are subject to be deleted.

1 From the menu, press ◀/▷ to select □ (File operation) and then press ENTER.

The File operation menu is displayed (page 19).

2 Press / to select "Delete Image" and press ENTER.

The index view of the memory card or the internal memory is displayed.

• During the deletion, do not turn off the printer or remove the memory card. The printer or the memory card may be damaged. Or the data may be lost.
• An image, once deleted, will be lost forever.
• When you delete an image with an associated file indication (the associated motion picture file or e-mail file will be also deleted.
• You cannot delete a protected image with the protect indication ( ) a DPOF preset indication ( ) isplayed. To delete them, use your digital camera. For the details, refer to the operating instruction of the digital camera.

Formatting a "Memory Stick" media

You can format a "Memory Stick" media.

1 From the menu, press ◀/▷ to select (File operation) and then press ENTER.

The File operation menu is displayed (page 19).

2 Press / to select “Memory Stick Format” and press ENTER.

The confirmation dialog box is displayed.

3 Press ◀/▷ to select "OK" and press ENTER.

The "Memory Stick" media is formatted.

Notes

• When you format a “Memory Stick” media, all the images on it are deleted.
• During formatting, do not turn off the printer or remove the memory card. The printer or the memory card may be damaged. Or the image may be lost.
• You cannot format a memory card other than a "Memory Stick" media or an external device such as a USB memory.

Formatting the internal memory

You can format the internal memory of the printer.

1 From the menu, press ◀/▷ to select □ (File operation) and then press ENTER.
The File operation menu is displayed (page 19).
2 Press / to select “Format internal memory” and press ENTER.
The confirmation dialog box is displayed.
3 Press ◀/▷ to select "OK" and press ENTER.
The internal memory is formatted.

• When you format the internal memory, all the files excluding designated to be retained in the memory by default will be deleted.
• During formatting, do not turn off the printer.

Changing the Print setup

1 From the menu, press ◀/▷ to select (Print setup) and then press ENTER. The Print setup menu is displayed.

During the “CreativePrint” operations, you cannot select the items except for “Color Setting.” (Setting items which cannot be selected and changed are displayed in gray.)

2 Press / to select the desired setting item, and press ENTER. The setting window for the selected item is displayed.

3 Press / to select the desired setting and press ENTER. The setting is fixed.

To exit the Print setup menu, press MENU.

Making a Date Print

1 From the menu, press ◀/▷ to select (Print setup) and then press ENTER.
The Print setup menu is displayed.

2 Press / to select [Date Print], and press ENTER.
The Date Print setting window is displayed.

3 To print an image with the shooting date, press / to select [Date]. To print an image with the date and time when it was shot, select [Date/Time]. Then press ENTER. The setting is fixed.

4 Press MENU.
5 Press PRINT.

The image is printed with the date or date and time.

Changing the Display/Printer setup

Note

During Edit or CreativePrint operations, some items cannot be selected and changed. Those items which cannot be changed are displayed in gray.

Connecting to a High Definition television and Printing

The printer supports the HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) output. By connecting the printer to a television equipped with an HDMI input, you can view higher precision photos on the television and perform printing operations.

Connecting to a television

Use a commercially available HDMI cable to connect the HDMI OUT connector (A Type) of the printer to an HDMI input connector of a television.

1 Prepare a commercially available HDMI cable.

• Use an HDMI cable shorter than 3m in length.
• Use an HDMI cable acquiring the HDMI logo.

2 Connect the printer HDMI OUT (output) connector to a HDMI input connector of a television.

While the printer outputs signals to the television, the printer LCD screen goes off.

3 Switch the TV input.

When the printer is connected to a television and then the printer power is turned on, a television supporting HDMI control function switches the input automatically to the printer and displays the printer pictures on the monitor. When the television is on the standby mode, the television power is also turned on.

• We cannot guarantee operations with all types of televisions.
• If the HDMI control setting of your television is off, the television input does not switch automatically. Settings differ depending on the television you use. For details, refer to the manual supplied with your television.
• If “CONTROL FOR HDMI” is set to “Off,” the input will not switch automatically (page 44).

- When you are using a television that does not support the control for HDMI or you connect a television with the printer for the first time, your television may not switch input automatically. If this occurs, switch the input manually to display the printer pictures on the television.

Procedures for switching the input differ depending on the type of a television. For details, refer to the manual supplied with your television.

- If you remove or connect an HDMI cable while the printer is performing an image-processing, printing or other time-consuming job, the display may switch between LCD and television. Until the job is competed, however, the display may show unusual view.

During copying file, deleting file or other file operations, do not remove or connect an HDMI cable. Doing so cancels the job.

Printing procedures

Using the printer buttons for printing

1 Insert a memory card into the printer.

To print an image in the internal memory, press ENTER without a memory card inserted.

2 Press ◀/▷ and ENTER of the printer to select an image, and then press PRINT to start printing.

The printing procedures are the same as those with the printer itself. You can perform Edit and CreativePrint operations.

Using the television remote control unit for printing

When you connect the printer with a “BRAVIA” Sync-ready television with an HDMI cable, you can use the remote control unit of your television to operate the printer.

Notes

• We cannot guarantee operations with all types of televisions.
• When you are using a Sony TV, you cannot use the TV remote control to operate the printer if the TV does not support “BRAVIA” Sync.
• To operate the printer, the ←→↑↓, [Enter], [Return] buttons of the remote control should support the HDMI control.
• If the HDMI control setting of your television is off, you cannot use the TV remote control to operate the printer. Settings differ depending on the television you use. For details, refer to the manual supplied with your television.
• If “CONTROL FOR HDMI” is set to “Off,” you cannot use the TV remote control to operate the printer (page 44).

■ Basic printer operations with a TV remote control unit

• When a cursor is displayed in an index view or menu display, you can move the cursor by pressing .
• When no cursor is displayed in an image preview, press to display the operation panel such as the printer operation panel on the TV monitor. Press on the TV remote control unit to select an item and then press [Enter] button.

On control for HDMI

When the “CONTROL FOR HDMI” is set to “On,” you can use the following printer operations:

• Turning off the printer power together with the television.
  • After the printer is connected to the TV, you can switch the TV input automatically to the printer by turning on the printer, or by connecting the powered-on printer to the television. If a television is on the standby mode, the television is also turned on.
• You can perform the printer operations using the TV remote control unit.

- If you switch the language of the TV while the printer and the television is being connected, you can also change the printer language automatically.

Note

To enable above functions, your television must support each function.

On BRAVIA PhotoTV HD

The printer supports “BRAVIA PhotoTV HD,” which reproduces pictures and colors with high fidelity. By coupling with “BRAVIA PhotoTV HD”-ready products, you can enjoy photos with full high definition picture quality. Dedicated descriptions of flowers and human faces, dynamic descriptions of sands and waves, and other photos are reproduced with stunning photo-realistic picture quality on a large TV screen.

What is "BRAVIA" Sync

The “BRAVIA” Sync is a name of a feature of Sony products that uses the HDMI control signals and enables you to control linked operations of a “BRAVIA” Sync-ready product from a BRAVIA control unit.

By connecting the printer and a “BRAVIA” Sync-compatible TV with an HDMI cable, you can use a BRAVIA control unit to perform linked operations.

Printing from an external device

You can connect a mass-storage-complaint digital camera, a USB memory, a photo storage device, digital photo frame, or other external device and print an image directly from the external device.

Notes

• We cannot guarantee connection with all types of mass storage devices.
• If a memory card is inserted in the printer, the printer cannot read the signal from an external device connected to the PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector of the printer. Remove the memory card, if any.

1 Set your digital camera or other external device ready for printing with the Mass Storage-compliant printer.

The settings and operations that are necessary before connection differ depending on the external device you use. For details, refer to the operating instructions of the external device. (In case of Sony Cyber-shot digital camera, for example, select “Normal” mode or “Mass Storage” mode for the “USB Connect.”)

2 Connect the printer to the AC power source (page 12).

3 Press the ⏻ (on/standby) button to turn on the printer.

4 Connect an external device such as a USB memory to the PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector of the printer.

Use the USB cable supplied with the printer, your digital camera, or external device. You can then perform direct printing.

When you connect the printer to a digital photo frame, you can print images saved in one of the file formats that the printer supports (page 82), from the photo frame's internal memory.

Note

You cannot print a RAW file or files saved on a memory card inserted into the photo frame.

• If you use a commercially available cable, please use the A-TYPE (the connector type of the printer side) USB cable of shorter than 3m in length.
• While the access indicator of the external device is flashing, never turn off the power of the printer or an external device nor remove the external device. The data inside the external device may be damaged. We cannot compensate for any damages that may be caused by data loss or damage.
• You cannot use a USB hub or a USB device equipped with a USB hub.
• Encoded or compressed data by fingerprint authentication or password cannot be used.

Printing from a PictBridge digital camera

You can connect a PictBridge-compliant digital camera and print an image directly from your digital camera.

When printing from a PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector, make sure to remove memory card(s), your computer, and a television from the printer in advance.

1 Set your digital camera ready for printing with a PictBridge-compliant printer.

The required settings and operations that must be completed before connection differ depending on the digital camera. For details, refer to the operating instructions of your digital camera. (In case of a Sony Cyber-shot digital camera, for example, select "PictBridge" mode for the "USB Connect.")

2 Connect the printer to the AC power source (page 12).
3 Press the ⏻ (on/standby) button to turn on the printer.
4 Connect the PictBridge-compliant digital camera to the PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector of the printer.

When you connect a PictBridge-compliant digital camera to the printer, "PictBridge" is displayed on the LCD display of the printer.

5 Operate the digital camera to print an image.

The printer supports the following prints:

• Single-image print

• All images print

• Index print
  • D P O F p r i n t

• Borders/Borderless print
• Date print
• Layout print (2/4 splits)

To PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector

Notes

• If you replace an ink ribbon while the printer is connected to a PictBridge-compliant digital camera, an image may not be printed properly. If this occurs, disconnect and then connect the digital camera.
• When printing from a PictBridge-compliant digital camera, an image will be printed according to the settings of the Print setup menu of the printer. When you set the Date Print or Borders/Borderless options with your digital camera, the digital camera settings will have priority. If you select "Borderless" with the printer and "Borders" with your camera, "Pattern 1" will be used for printing.
• Even when you select “Date/Time” for Date Print setting, time may not be printed according to the digital camera you use.

Printing from a Bluetooth-compliant device

By connecting the Sony DPPA-BT1 Bluetooth USB adaptor (sold separately) to the PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector of your printer, you can print an image from a Bluetooth-compliant mobile phone, digital camera, or other device.

Notes

• Do not use the DPPA-BT1 outside the area you purchased it. Depending on the area, the use of the adaptor may violate the local radio wave regulations and may be subject to penalty.
• In some regions, the Sony DPPA-BT1 Bluetooth USB adaptor is not sold.

Compatible profiles for Bluetooth communication

The DPP-FP97 supports the following profiles:

• BIP (Basic Imaging Profile) Image Push Responder
- OPP (Object Push Profile) Object Push Server

For the profiles that your Bluetooth device supports, please refer to its manual.

What is a "Profile"?

A profile consists of the standards that enable Bluetooth wireless communication. There are several profiles available, depending on the purposes and product to be used. To make Bluetooth communication possible, the devices used in the communicated should support the same profile.

Compatible image file formats that can be printed

Maximum number of pixels that can be handled

See page 82.

- If the file size of an image exceeds 5 MB, the image cannot be transmitted or the thumbnail of the image will be transmitted.

Preparations: connecting DPPA-BT1

Before you start transferring an image or printing, you need the following preparations:

1 Connect the printer to the AC power source.(page 12)
2 Press the ⏻ (on/standby) button to turn on the printer.
3 Insert the Bluetooth adaptor into the PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector of your printer.

Note

If any device, other than the Bluetooth adaptor, such as a memory card, camera, PC, or other USB memory or a USB cable is connected to any of the memory card slots, the PictBridge/EXT INTERFACE connector, or USB connector of your printer, disconnect it from the printer and then connect the Bluetooth adaptor.

Printing

Print from the Bluetooth-compliant mobile phone, or other device.

For printing procedures, refer to the manual of your Bluetooth device.

To select the printer from a Bluetooth-compliant device, select “Sony DPP-FP97 ##.” (“##” stands for the two figures from the right of the address displayed in the LCD screen.)

When input of Passkey\* is required

Input “0000.” You cannot change the Passkey with the printer.

* A Passkey is often referred to as a “pass code” or “PIN code.”

Transferring an image to a memory card

1 Insert a memory card into the appropriate memory card slot of the printer.

Insert a memory card that you want to save an image to be transferred only.

The Bluetooth saving mode window is displayed. On upper left on the screen,

MLS Save Mode is displayed.

2 Transfer an image from the Bluetooth-compliant mobile phone, or other device.

Perform the similar procedures when you print an image. For details, refer to the operating instructions of the Bluetooth-compliant device you are using.

The image transferred is saved in the memory card.

Notes

• You cannot transfer an image to the internal memory of a digital photo printer.
• Do not use the DPPA-BT1 outside the area you purchased it. Depending on the areas, the use of this product may violate the local radio wave regulations and may be subject to its penalty.
• The communication distance of the product may vary depending on the obstacles (a human body, metal object, or wall) between the product and the mobile phone or other device.

• The sensitivity of the Bluetooth communication may be affected in the following conditions:

• When there is an obstacle between the product and the mobile phone or other product such as a human body, metal object, or a wall.

• Where a wireless LAN is established or a microwave oven is being used near-by, or other electromagnetic waves are emitted.

- Since a Bluetooth device and a wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b/g) device use the same frequency ranges, wave interference may occur when the product is used near a device equipped with a wireless LAN. This may cause deterioration in the communication speed and connection conditions. If this occurs, take the following measures:

- Keep a distance of at the least 10m from a wireless LAN device when you connect the product to a mobile phone.

- Turn off the wireless LAN device in case you want to use the product closer than 10m from the wireless LAN device.

- We cannot guarantee that this product works with all devices enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology.

- Sony cannot assume any responsibility for any information leakage that may be caused in Bluetooth communications.

- Sony cannot accept responsibilities for any failure to satisfy the protection requirements resulting from a non-recommended modification or use of the product.

Caution

- Radio waves from a Bluetooth device may adversely affect the operation of electrical and medical devices, and could lead to accidents due to malfunctions. Make sure to turn off the product and mobile phone and do not use this product in the following places:

- Inside medical facilities, trains, airplanes, gas stations or other places that may emit flammable gas.

- near automatic doors or fire alarms or other automatically controlled devices.

- Keep this product at least 22 cm away from cardiac pacemakers. Radio waves from this product may adversely affect the operation of cardiac pacemakers.

- Do not disassemble or modify this product. Doing so could result in injury, electric shock, or fire.

Printing from a PC

You can print the images from a PC by installing the supplied software on your PC and connecting it to the printer.

This section explains how to install the supplied software on your PC and how to use the supplied PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software to print an image.

Please also refer to the operating instructions supplied with your PC for information on operating the PC.

Installation of the software is necessary only when you connect the printer to your PC for the first time.

On the supplied CD-ROM

The supplied CD-ROM contains the following software:

• Printer driver for the DPP-FP97: The software describes the printer's requirements and enables printing from the PC.
• PMB (Picture Motion Browser): Sony's original software application that allows you to handle photographs and moving images—this includes capturing, managing, processing, and printing.

Installing the software

System requirements

To use the supplied printer driver and PMB, you need a PC that meets the following system requirements:

CPU: Pentium III 500 MHz or faster (Pentium III 800 MHz or faster is recommended.)

RAM: 256 MB or more (512 MB or more is recommended.)

Hard disk space: 500 MB or more (Depending on the Windows version you are using, more space will be required. To handle image data, you will need additional hard disk space.)

Display setting: Screen resolution: 1024 × 768 dots or more Screen colors: High Color (16-bit) or greater

Drive: CD-ROM drive (to be used for software installation)

Notes

• If a hub is used to connect the printer and your PC, or if two or more USB devices, including other printers, are connected to your PC, trouble may occur. If this occurs, simplify the connections between your PC and the printer.
• You cannot operate the printer from another USB device being used simultaneously.
• Do not remove the USB cable from or connect it to the printer during data communication or printing. The printer may not work properly.
• The printer does not support standby, sleep, and hibernation modes and restarting from those modes. Do not allow the PC connected to the printer to switch to one of those modes during printing. If you do so, printing may be failed.
• When printing is failed, remove a USB cable and then connect it, or restart your computer. Then try printing again.
• We cannot guarantee operations with all PCs, even though they may meet or exceed the system requirements.
• PMB supports DirectX technology and DirectX installation may be required. DirectX is available on the CD-ROM.
• If the PMB is installed on a PC on which the Cyber-shot Viewer is already installed, the Cyber-shot Viewer will be overwritten and replaced by the PMB. The browsing folders once registered in the Cyber-shot Viewer will be automatically registered in the PMB. When using the PMB, you can view the folders easier than you can when using the Cyber-shot Viewer, as the registered folders are displayed by group when viewing folders. With its improved red-eye reduction adjustment and newly-added tone curve adjustment, the PMB also offers more powerful editorial features. You can also use the software to write data onto an external memory card.

Installing the printer driver

Follow the procedures below to install the driver.

Notes

• Do not connect the printer to the PC before installing the driver.
• Please log on to Windows using a “Computer administrator” user account.
• Be sure to close all running programs before installing the software.
• The dialog boxes shown in this section are from Windows Vista, unless otherwise specified. The installation procedures and the dialog boxes shown differ depending on the operating system.

1 Turn on your PC, start Windows, and insert the supplied CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your PC.

• In Windows Vista, the AutoPlay window may appear. Even if this occurs, select "Setup.exe" execution and install the driver according to the instructions on the screen.

2 Click "Installing Printer Driver."

The “InstallShield Wizard” dialog box is displayed.

3 Click "Next."

The license agreement dialog box is displayed.

4 Read the agreement thoroughly, and if you agree, check "I accept this agreement" and click "Next." When an older version of the printer driver has been installed on your computer, the message "Older version of the printer driver has been found." may appear on the screen. Click "Yes," and follow the displayed instructions to restart your PC. Then, perform the installation procedures again. After the computer is restarted, the older version of printer driver will be deleted. If you install the new version of printer driver, you can use the new version of printer driver.

5 Click "Install."

Installation starts.
6 When the "Sony DPP-FP97 printer driver has been successfully installed." dialog is displayed, click "Finish."
7 Press the ⏻ (on/standby) button to turn on the printer.
8 Connect the USB connectors of the printer and your PC with either the supplied or a commercially available USB cable.

Note

When you use a commercially available USB cable, use a B-TYPE (the connector type of the printer side) cable shorter than 3m in length.

9 Wait for a while, then check to see that "Sony DPP-FP97" has been added to the "Printers" or "Printers and Faxes."

10 When the installation is complete, remove the CD-ROM from your PC and keep it for future use.

To continue the process and install the PMB software, follow the procedures from step 2 on page 56.

Notes

• If the installation fails, remove the printer from your PC, restart your PC, and then follow the installation procedures from step 1 again.
• After installation, the “Sony DPP-FP97” is not yet set as the default printer. Set the printer you use for each application.
• The supplied CD-ROM will be required when you uninstall or re-install the printer driver. Keep it for possible future use.
• Before you use the printer, read the Readme.txt file (the README folder of the CD-ROM English folder Readme.txt).

When the software is installed

The icon is displayed on the Windows desktop, as well as a shortcut to the web site for printer customer registration. After you finish registration, you can find support information at: http://www.sony.net/registration/di/

Uninstalling the printer driver

When the printer driver becomes unnecessary, please follow the procedures below to remove the printer driver:

①Disconnect the USB cable from your printer and the PC.
②Insert the supplied CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your PC.
The installation window is displayed.

Note

If the installation window is not displayed automatically, double-click the "Setup.exe" file on the CD-ROM.

③Click "Installing Printer Driver."
The “InstallShield Wizard” dialog box is displayed.

④Click "Next."

The license agreement dialog box is displayed.

⑤Read the agreement thoroughly, and if you agree, check “I accept this agreement” and click “Next.”

The confirmation dialog box used for removing the software is displayed.

⑥Click "Yes."

The confirmation dialog box used for restart is displayed.

⑦Check “Yes, I want to restart my computer now” and click “OK.”

After the computer is restarted, the relevant files will be deleted and uninstallation is complete.

Installing the PMB (Picture Motion Browser)

Follow the procedures below to install the PMB.

Notes

• Please log on to Windows using a “Computer administrator” user account.
• Be sure to close all running programs before installing the software.

If you have already installed one or more versions of PMB on your computer, check the version of the installed PMB. (Click [Help] on the menu bar of the PMB, and select [About Picture Motion Browser]. The version information is displayed.)

Compare the version number of the supplied CD-ROM with that of the previously installed PMB, check to ensure that the versions have been installed in order, from the older to the newer. When the computer you are using has a newer version of PMB already installed, uninstall that version first, then reinstall both versions, starting with the older one first. If you install the newer version first, some functions of PMB may not operate correctly.

1 Turn on your PC, start Windows, and insert the supplied CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your PC. The installation window is displayed (page 53).

2 Click "Installing PMB (Picture Motion Browser)."

The “Choose Setup Language” dialog box is displayed.

3 After you select your language and clicking "Next," the license agreement dialog box is displayed.

4 Read the agreement thoroughly, and if you agree, check “I accept the terms of the license agreement” and click “Next.”

After you click “Next” in the license agreement dialog, the dialog box notifying you that the program is ready to installed is displayed.

5 Click "Install" and follow the instructions on the screen to proceed with installation.

When you are prompted to restart your PC, follow the displayed instructions to restart it.

6 When the installation is complete, remove the CD-ROM from your PC and keep it for future use.

Notes

• If the installation fails, perform the installation procedures from step 2 again.
• The supplied CD-ROM will be required when you uninstall or re-install the PMB. Keep it in a safe place for possible future use.

Uninstalling the PMB

When this software is no longer needed, remove it from your PC as follows:

①Click "Start" - "Control Panel." The Control Panel is displayed.
②Click “Uninstall a program.” Depending on the operating system, it may be called “Programs and Features” or “Add or Remove Programs.”
③Select “Sony Picture Utility” and click “Change/Remove.” The software uninstallation process starts.

Printing photos from the PMB (Picture Motion Browser)

You can use the PMB to print an image from your PC using P size print paper.

1 Start the PMB window using either of the following methods:

• Double-click (PMB) on the Windows desktop.
• Click “Start” - “All Programs” - “Sony Picture Utility” - “PMB.”

When the PMB is started for the first time, the dialog box used to register a viewed folder is displayed. If images have already been saved in the “Pictures” folder, click “Register Now.”

If you have saved images in a folder other than the “Pictures” folder, click “Register Later.” See “Registering a browsing folder” on page 60.

Tip

In Windows XP, please read "Pictures" as "My Pictures."

How to access the "Pictures" folder

Click "Start" - "Pictures" from the taskbar.

2 Click "Start."

The main window of the PMB is displayed.

When the PMB is started for the second time, step 2 can be skipped.

In main window, there are the following two different views. To switch the view, click the “Folders” or “Calendar” tab in the right frame.

- “Folders” view

The images will be classified in each registered folder and are displayed as thumbnails.

- "Calendar" view

The images will be classified according to the shot date and are displayed as thumbnails on each date of the calendar. In “Calendar” view, you can switch the display by year, by month, or by hour. In this section, “Folders” view windows are used as examples.

3 Click the folder containing the photos you want to print.

As an example, the “sample” folder is selected in the following explanation.

4 Select the photos that you want to print and click (print).

The Print dialog box is displayed.

5 In the "Printer" drop-down list box, select "Sony DPP-FP97." To set the paper orientation or other print options, go to step 6. To print, skip to step 11.

Print Options	• Zoom the image until the print area is full: When checked, an image will be printed over the entire printing area of the paper. An edge of the photo may be cut. When unchecked, an image will be printed without cutting off any portions.• Print date taken: When checked, an image is printed with the date of shooting if the image is a file recorded in the DCF (Design rule for Camera File system) format.
Properties S	Specifies paper size, orientation, picture quality and other details.

6 To set the paper orientation or other print options, click "Properties." The "Properties" dialog box of the selected printer is displayed. The printer driver of the printer utilizes the Universal Printer Driver, a Microsoft common printer driver. In the dialog boxes, there are some items that are not used within this printer.

7 In the "Layout" tab, specify the paper orientation or other options.

Page Order S	Select the order of the pages when printed:• Front to Back• Back to Front
Pages Per Sheet	Specify the number of copies per sheet to be printed. Select “1.”

8 Click "Advanced."

The "Sony DPP-FP97 Advanced Options" dialog box is displayed.

Paper/Output	• Paper Size: From the drop-down list box, select the paper size you actually use for printing: P size/L sizeNote:L size print paper is not sold in some regions.• Copy Count: Specify the number of copies to be printed.
Graphic - Image Color Management	• ICM Method: The printer does not support the ICM method settings. Even if you select an option other than “ICM Disabled,” the printed results will not reflect the setting.Leave the option as it is.• ICM Intent: The printer does not support the ICM Intent settings. 9 On the "Paper/Quality" tab, specify the color or paper source.

Printing starts. For the details of the properties of the PMB, refer to the PMB help.

Note

You cannot print a motion-picture file or RAW data files.

Tips

• To select a series of still images in the image area of the main window, click the first image in the series and then click the last image while pressing the Shift key. To select multiple still images not in a sequence, click the images individually while pressing the Ctrl key.
• You can also print from an image preview.

• To cancel the printing operation, do the following.

①Double-click on the printer icon on the taskbar, and open the "Print" dialog box.
②Click the document name that you want to cancel printing of and then click “Cancel” from the “Document” menu.

The dialog box used for confirming the deletion is displayed.

③Click "Yes."

The printing job is canceled.

Note

When cancelling a job, do not remove the job being printed. Doing so may cause a paper jam.

Registering a browsing folder

PMB does not allow you to view images saved on the PC hard disk directly. You must first register the browsing folder as follows:

1 Click "File"-Register Viewed Folder," or click

The "Register Folders to View" dialog box is displayed.

2 Select the folder you want to register and then click "Register."

Note

You cannot register the whole drive.

The confirmation dialog box used for registration is displayed.

3 Click "Yes."

Registration of the image information in the data base starts.

4 Click "Close."

Notes

• The folder you select as the destination of the imported images will be registered automatically.
• You cannot cancel registration of the folder you register here.

To change the browsing folder

Click "Tools" - "Settings" - "Viewed folders."

Tips

• If a sub folder is contained in the source folder, the images in the sub folder will also be registered.
• When the software is first started, a message prompting you to register "Pictures" will be displayed.
• Depending on the number of images, it may take some tens of minutes to register images.

Printing from a commercially available software application

You can use a commercially available software application to print an image from the DPP-FP97. Select "DPP-FP97" as a printer in the print dialog box, and select the print paper size in the page setup dialog box. For details of print settings, see steps 5 and 7 on pages page 57 and 58.

On the "Borderless Print" setting in "Printer Features"

When using an application other than the PMB, an image might be printed with borders even if you select "ON" for "Borderless Print" in "Printer Features" of the "Sony DPP-FP97 Advanced Options" dialog box.

When you select the borderless print option, the printing range information for borderless printing will be supplied to the application.

Some applications, however, may arrange and

print the image with borders within the specified range.

If this occurs, do the following to print an image without borders:

- When you can set the print range with an application, set an image to be printed fully within the available print range. For example, if you print images using “Windows Photo Gallery” of Windows Vista, select “Full page photo print” and check “Fit picture to frame.”

Orientation setting

Depending on the software application you use, orientation may not change even if you change portrait or landscape setting.

With the Borders/Borderless setting of the printer driver

When the software application you use has Borders/Borderless setting, we suggest you select “ON” for “Borderless Print” in “Printer Features” of the “Sony DPP-FP97 Advanced Options” dialog box as the printer driver setting.

Print quantity setting

Depending on the software application you are using, the print quantity setting of the application may have priority over the setting specified in the printer driver dialog box.

If an error message appears

If an error occurs, the following error messages may appear on the LCD screen.

Follow the procedures provided in the solutions an error message shows. If the same message appears frequently even after taking the recommended measures, consult your Sony dealer.

Memory cards and external device

Error messages Meaning/Solutions
No image file.	→ There are no image files in the memory card or an external device that the printer can handle. Connect a memory card or device that contains images that can be displayed with the printer.
No DPOF file.	→ There are no DPOF-preset image files in the memory card or an external device. Specify the print (DPOF) mark with your camera.
Cannot delete a protected image.	→ To delete a protected image, cancel protection on your camera.
Cannot delete a DPOF image.	→ To delete a DPOF-preset image, cancel the print (DPOF) mark on your camera.
Protected. Cancel protect then try again.	→ The “Memory Stick” media is write-protected. Release the write-protection.
The Memory Stick is full.(Similar messages for Internal memory, CompactFlash card, SD memory Card, and xD-Picture Card, and external device.)	→ There is no free memory space in the selected memory card, internal memory, or an external device. Delete unnecessary images or replace with a memory card or an external device having sufficient memory space.
This Memory Stick has problem.(Similar messages for Internal memory, CompactFlash card, SD memory Card, and xD-Picture Card, and external device.)	→ An error may have occurred. If these messages appear frequently, check the memory card or an external device status with another device. In case of the internal memory, format it.In case of an external deviceAn external device might be write-protected. Release the write-protection setting of the device you use. A internal memory of a digital camera may be write-protected.
Write error in the Memory Stick.(Similar messages for Internal memory, CompactFlash card, SD memory Card, and xD-Picture Card, and external device.)

Paper jam. Remove print paper.	→ Paper has jammed. See “If paper jams” (→page 76) and remove any jammed paper from the printer. If the jammed paper cannot be removed, contact the Sony service facilities.

If trouble occurs

If you run into any problems using the printer, use the following guidance to solve the problem. If the problem persists, consult your Sony dealer.

To confirm and evaluate error occurrence and improvement, Sony may check the data of the internal memory within the minimum possible range. Please be assured that we do not copy or save the content or data.

Power

Displaying images

	• Does the memory card, the internal memory, and an external device contain images recorded with a digital camera or other device?	→ Insert a memory card or an external device that contains the recorded images. Check to see that images are recorded in the internal memory.→ Check the file formats that can be printed with the printer. (→ page 82)
	• Is the file format compatible with the DCF?	→ If an image is not compatible with the DCF, it may not be printed with the printer even if it is displayed on the PC monitor.
No images appear either on the LCD screen or on the TV monitor.	• Is the TV input selector set to the printer?	→ Even if the TV input selector is set to the printer, no images will be displayed when an HDMI cable is connected.→ Switch the TV input selector to the printer. Or disconnect the HDMI cable and switch the display to the LCD screen.
Some images in the index view are not displayed or not printed even if they are displayed.	Are thumbnail images displayed in the index view?	→ If the image is displayed but cannot be printed, the file used for printing is damaged.→ If an image is not compatible with DCF (Design rule for Camera File system), it may not be printed with the printer even if it is displayed on the PC monitor.
	Does the mark displayed below appear in the index view?Was the image created on your PC?	→ If the mark shown on the left is displayed, the image may be a JPEG file created with your computer, or the thumbnail data is not contained.Select the mark and press ENTER to display its image preview. If an image is displayed, you can print the image. If the same mark is displayed again, the image is of incompatible file format and you cannot print it with the printer.
	Does the mark displayed below appear in the index view?	→ If the mark shown on the left is displayed, the image is of compatible file format but its thumbnail data or the data itself cannot be opened.Select the mark and press ENTER to display its image preview. If an image is displayed, you can print the image. If the same mark is displayed again, you cannot print it with the printer.
	Are there more than 9 999 images saved in the memory card, the internal memory, and an external device?	→ The printer can display, save, delete or handle up to 9 999 image files. If there are more than 9 999 images stored in a memory card, internal memory, or an external device, use the PC or PictBridge mode to display and handle the remaining images.
	Did you name or rename an image file with your PC?	→ When you name or rename an image file on your computer and its file name includes characters other than alphanumeric characters, the file name may not be displayed correctly or the image may not be displayed on the printer.
	Did you specify the print quantity in the index view?	→ Once you have selected images in the “To print multiple images” procedures, you cannot print an image with which the cursor is just placed. Press ENTER to select it and specify the print quantity for the image. (→page 17)
Some images in the index view are not displayed or not printed even if they are displayed.	• Is there a folder whose hierarchy exceeds 8 in the memory card, the internal memory, or an external device?	→ The printer cannot display the images saved in a folder whose hierarchy exceeds 8.
The file name is not displayed correctly.	• Did you change the file name of the image with your PC?	→ When you name or rename an image file on your computer and its file name includes characters other than alphanumeric characters, the file name may not be displayed correctly. For a file created with a PC application, the first 8 characters of its file name will be displayed as the file name.
In the Edit menu, there are blank areas at the top and bottom of the previewed image.	• Is the previewed image extremely stretched vertically or horizontally?	→ If an image is extremely stretched vertically or horizontally, blank areas may appear in the Edit menu.→ The standard aspect ratio of an image shot with a digital camera is 3:4. When you use a device other than the printer to edit or save an image, it is saved as a more horizontal print image and its top and bottom edges will be cut and displayed in black.

Printing

Paper does not feed.	• Is the print paper properly set in the paper tray?	→ If print paper is not properly loaded, the printer may develop trouble. Paper does not feed.	Are you using print paper that was not designed for the printer?	→ Use print paper designed for the printer. If you use incompatible print paper, the printer may develop trouble. (→About the Print Packs)
The print paper is ejected without being printed.	Is the perforations of the print paper removed?Are you using print paper that was not designed for the printer?	→ Use print paper designed for the printer. If you use incompatible print paper, the printer may develop trouble. (→About the Print Packs)

Printed results

Symptom Check	Cause/Solutions
The printed pictures are inferior in quality.	Did you print preview image data?	→ Depending on the type of digital camera used, preview images may be displayed along with the primary images in the thumbnail list. The printed quality of the preview images will not be as good as the primary images. Note that if you delete the preview images, the data for the primary images may be damaged.
	Did you print an image whose size (width or height) is smaller than 480 dots?	→ When an image is displayed in a small size with a black frame, printing quality is rough due to this small image size.
	Did you use the Edit menu to enlarge the image?	→ An enlarged image, depending on its image size, will be printed with deteriorated picture quality.
	Did you shoot an image in the RAW file format?	→ When you shoot an image in the RAW file format, a highly-compressed JPEG file may be also recorded. As the printer does not support the RAW file format, it may use the JPEG file to print an image. A RAW file can be printed from a PC. For details, refer to the operating instructions of the digital camera you are using.What is a RAW file?A RAW file is an original image file format to save uncompressed, unprocessed still image data captured from a digital camera.For whether or not a digital camera can capture an image in the RAW file format, refer to the operating instructions of the digital camera.
The picture quality and colors of the image previewed on the screen differs from those printed.	—→ Because of	differences in the display method or profiles of a LCD screen, please regard the image being displayed on the display as just a reference. To adjust picture quality, do either of the following:– MENU button - Print setup - Color Setting (→page 42)– MENU button -Edit-Adjust (→page 22)
The printed image differs when an image is printed directly from the memory card, the internal memory, and an external device connected to the printer and when it is printed via a PC.	—	→Because of the differences in the printer's internal processing and PC software processing, the printed images will be different.
The date cannot be printed.	• Is “Date Print” set to “Date” or “Date/Time”?	→Press MENU button, and set “Date Print” in the Print setup menu to “Date” or “Date/Time.” (→page 40)
	• Does the image support DCF?	→The “Date Print” function of this unit supports an image that is compatible with the DCF standards.
The date is printed unintentionally.	• Is “Date Print” set to “Off”?	→Press MENU button, and set “Date Print” in the Print setup menu to “Off.” (→page 40)
	• Was the date saved with the image when it was shot with the digital camera?	→When the date was saved with the image, you cannot make a print without a date.
The image cannot be printed fully in the print range. Borders remains.	• Did you select “Pattern 1” or “Pattern 2” for “Borders” in the Print setup menu?	→Press MENU button, and set “Borderless” by selecting Print setup - Borders. (→page 41)
	• Is the aspect ratio of the image correct?	→Depending on the type of digital camera used, the aspect ratio of the recorded image differs, so the image may not be printed covering the entire printable area.
Even though “Borderless” is selected in the Print setup, the image is printed with borders on both sides.	— → When you use a device other than the printer to edit or save an image, blank areas around an image are also saved as part of image data. Even if you print such data with “Borderless” setting, you cannot eliminate the borders on both sides of a print. (→ page 41)
The whole area of an image cannot be printed.	· Did you set “Pattern 1” in the Print setup menu?	→ You can print the whole area of an image by selecting “Pattern 1” in the Print setup menu. (→ page 41)
The image is printed at an angle.	· Is the paper tray inserted properly?	→ Re-insert the paper tray firmly straight in to the end.
There are white lines or dots on the printed pictures.	— → The print head or paper path may be soiled. Use the supplied cleaning cartridge and sheet to clean the head and path. (→ page 77)
The picture is too bright, dark, reddish, yellowish, or greenish.	— → Adjust the image by pressing MENU button and then selecting Edit- Adjust. (→ page 22)
Red-eye correction does not take effect with AUTO TOUCH-UP button.	— → Adjust for the red-eye phenomenon by pressing MENU button and then selecting Edit - Red-eye Correction. (→ page 24)
Red-eye correction does not take effect with “Red-eye Correction” menu.	—	→ Set the size of the adjustment frame to be two to seven times as large as the eye. (→ page 24)
	· Did you enlarge, reduce the size of, rotate, or move an image after red-eye correction?	→ Red-eye correction may not work properly if other editorial operations such as enlarging, reducing the size of, rotating, or moving an image. Perform these editorial operations first and then perform red-eye correction.

Settings

Symptom Check	Cause/Solutions
The “Borderless” and “Pattern 1/2” setting does not take effect.	• Are you operating the CreativePrint menu?	→ In the CreativePrint menu, templates are used and you cannot select border/borderless prints.

Saving or deleting an image

Symptom Check	Cause/Solutions
You cannot save an image.	Is the memory card protected?	→ Use your digital camera or external device to release the protection and then try saving again.
	Is the write-protect switch of the memory card in the LOCK position?	→ Slide the write-protect switch to the write enable position.
	Is the memory card full?	→ Delete unnecessary images (page 38), or replace it with a new memory card with sufficient free memory space. Save the image again.
You cannot delete an image.	Is the memory card protected?	→ Use your digital camera or external device to release the protection and try deleting again.
	Is the image DPOF preset?	→ Release the DPOF preset with your digital camera.
	Is the image protected?	→ Display the image preview view, and check the detailed information display (page 14). An image with (protect indication) is for read-only and cannot be deleted from the printer.
	Is the write-protect switch of the memory card in the LOCK position?	→ Slide the write-protect switch to the write enable position.
	Are you using a “Memory Stick-ROM?”	→ You cannot delete an image from or format a “Memory Stick-ROM.”
An image was deleted accidentally.	—	→ You cannot recover an image once it is deleted.
The “Memory Stick” media cannot be formatted.	Is the write-protect switch of the memory card in the LOCK position?	→ Slide the write-protect switch to the write enable position.
	Is it a “Memory Stick-ROM”?	→ You cannot delete an image from or format a “Memory Stick-ROM.”
The “Memory Stick” media was formatted accidentally.	— → Once the “	Memory Stick” media is formatted, all the data is deleted and cannot be recovered.

Connecting with a digital camera or other external device

Symptom Check	Cause/Solutions
The PictBridge mark does not appear on the LCD screen of the digital camera.	• Is the digital camera connected correctly?	→ Connect the cable correctly.
	• Is the (on/standby) turned on?	button on the printer using the (on/ standby) button.
	• Does your digital camera support PictBridge?	→ Refer to the manual supplied with your camera, or consult the manufacturer.
	• Is “Connecting” displayed on the printer LCD screen?	→ The message is not displayed while the printer is in the Edit, CreativePrint, or other menu modes. Exit the menu and then connect the cable again.→ Disconnect the digital camera and the printer and then connect them again. Or turn off and then on the printer and the digital camera.
	• Is the USB setting of your camera in PictBridge mode?	→ Set the USB setting of your camera to the PictBridge mode.
You connect and disconnect the USB cable, but nothing happens.	—	→ The printer has developed an over-current error. Unplug the AC power cord of the printer, plug it in again, and then press the (on/standby) button to recover from the error.
You cannot stop printing even if you pressed CANCEL.	— → The next print from the one currently printed will be canceled.→ Depending on the digital camera you use, you cannot cancel printing from the printer. Operate the digital camera to stop printing. Refer to the operating instructions of the digital camera.
You cannot make index printing.	• Is the message “Could not create printing data for some images.” displayed?	→ The printer cannot print index print of the DPOF printing. To make index printing, insert the memory card directly or use an external device (page 16, 48).

Connecting with a computer

Symptom Check	Cause/Solutions
The images on the memory card and an external device inserted to the printer are not displayed on the PC.	—	→ The printer does not provide the function for viewing the memory card or an external device images from the computer.
You lost the supplied CD-ROM and want to obtain a new one.	—	→ Please download the printer driver from the Customer support home page. Or contact your Sony dealer.
The printer driver cannot be installed.	·Are you sure that you have followed the installation procedures correctly?	→ Follow the procedures in the operating instructions to install the driver (←page 53). If an error occurs, restart your computer and do the installation procedures again.
	·Is another application program running?	→ Exit all applications and then install the driver again.
	·Did you specify the CD-ROM as the installation CD-ROM correctly?	→ Double-click “My Computer” and then the CD-ROM icon in the open window. Follow the procedures in the operating instructions to install the driver.
	— → The USB driver may not be installed properly. Follow the operating instructions to install the USB driver again.
	·Is there an anti-virus program or other program running on the system?	→ If there is an anti-virus program or other program running on the system, exit it and then start installing the driver.
	·Did you log on using an Administrator user account?	→ To install the driver, log onto Windows using an Administrator user account.
The printer does not respond to the printing order from the PC.	—	→ If there is no trouble displayed on the Windows desktop, check the printer's LCD screen.If the printer shows trouble, do the following:1. Turn off the ⏻ (on/standby) button of the printer.2. Disconnect the power cable, wait for 5 to 10 seconds, and then connect the cable again.3. Restart your computer.If these do not solve the problem, consult with your Sony dealer or service facilities.
An image is printed with borders even if I select “Borderless.”	• Are you using an application software other than PMB?	→ When using an application other than the PMB, an image might be printed with borders even if you select borderless print. When you can set border/borderless with an application, set an image to be printed fully in the print range even if it is printed over the range.
Print quantity specified in the “Pages Per Sheet” in the “Layout” tab of the “Sony DPP-FP97 Properties” dialog box does not match the actual print quantity and printed results.	—	→ Depending on the application you use, the print quantity setting of the application you use may have priority over the setting specified in the printer driver dialog box.
Colors of the printed image from a PC are different from those printed from a memory card.	—	→ Since the process in printing an image from a memory card differs that in printing from a PC, the colors may not be exactly identical.
An error stating “Error was found while a document is output to the USB device.” is displayed.	— → Disconnect	the USB cable and then connect it again.

Others

Symptom Check	Cause/Solutions
You cannot insert the ink ribbon smoothly.	—	→ If the ink ribbon does not click into place, remove it and then re-insert it. Only when the ink ribbon is too slack to be loaded, remove the slack. (→pages 9, 10)
The ink ribbon cannot be removed.	—	→ Turn off the printer using the ⏻ (on/ standby) button and then turn it on again. After the motor sound stops, try to remove the ink ribbon. If this does not solve the problem, contact Sony service facilities or your Sony dealer.

If paper jams

1 Turn off the power of the printer and then turn it on again.

Please wait for the print paper to be ejected automatically.

2 Remove the ejected print paper from the printer.
3 Remove the paper tray and ink ribbon from the printer and check to ensure if there is no jammed print paper inside.

Check to see if there is jammed paper. If any, remove it.

Note

If you cannot remove the jammed paper, contact your Sony dealer.

Cleaning

If white lines or period-like dots are printed on the pictures, the thermal transfer head may be soiled with the dust accumulated inside the printer.

Clean inside the printer using the supplied cleaning cartridge and sheet.

Before you start cleaning the printer, please remove any memory cards, USB memories, or USB cables from the printer.

1 Open the ink ribbon compartment door and if there is an ink ribbon inserted, remove it.
2 Insert the supplied cleaning cartridge into the printer and close the ink ribbon compartment door.

3 Remove the paper tray from the printer. If there is print paper in the tray, remove it.
4 Place the cleaning sheet into the paper tray with the no-imprint side facing up.

5 Set the paper tray into the printer and press PRINT.

The cleaning cartridge and cleaning sheet will clean inside the printer. After the cleaning is finished, the cleaning sheet is automatically ejected.

6 Remove the cleaning cartridge and sheet from the printer.

Tip

Keep the cleaning cartridge and cleaning sheet together for future cleaning. Be careful not to lose them.

Notes

• If you already enjoy proper printing performances, cleaning will not improve the printed picture quality.
• Do not place the cleaning sheet on top of print paper and carry out cleaning, as this may cause a paper jam or other troubles.
• If a cleaning does not improve printed picture quality, please carry out the cleaning process a couple of times.
• You cannot clean the printer while it is connected to a PC or a PictBridge camera.

Precautions

On safety

• Be careful not to set or drop any heavy objects on the power cord, or to damage the power cord in any way. Never operate this printer with a damaged power cord.
• Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unplug the printer and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
• Never disassemble the printer.
• To disconnect the power cord, pull it out by the plug. Never pull the power cord itself.
• When the printer is not going to be used for an extended period of time, disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
• Do not handle the printer roughly.
• To reduce the risk of electrical shock, always unplug the printer from the electrical outlet before cleaning and servicing the printer.

On installation

- Avoid placing the printer in a location subject to:

• vibration
• h u m i d i t y
• excessive dust
  – direct sunlight
• extremely high or low temperatures

- Do not use electrical equipment near the printer. The printer will not work properly in electromagnetic fields.

- Do not place heavy objects on the printer.

- Leave enough room around the printer so that the ventilation holes are not blocked. Blocking these holes may cause internal heat build-up.

On the AC adaptor

• Be sure to use the AC adaptor supplied with the printer. Do not use other AC adaptors, as this may cause a malfunction.
• Do not use the supplied AC adaptor for other devices.
• In case the cord of the AC adaptor is damaged, do not use it any longer, as this may be dangerous.

On moisture condensation

If the printer is brought directly from a cold location to a warm location or placed in an extremely warm or humid room, moisture may condense inside the unit. In such cases the printer will probably not work properly and may even develop a fault if you persist in using it. If moisture condensation occurs, unplug the AC power cord of the printer and do not use the printer for at least one hour.

On transport

When you transport the printer, remove the ink ribbon, paper tray, AC adaptor, the memory card, or an external device from the printer and put the printer and its peripherals in the original box with the protective packaging.

If you no longer have the original box and packing parts, use similar packing material so that the printer will not be damaged while being transported.

On cleaning

Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft dry cloth, or a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of solvent, such as alcohol or benzine, which may damage the finish.

On restrictions on duplication

When duplicating documents with the printer, pay special attention to the following:

• Duplication of banknotes, coins, or securities is against the law.
• Duplication of blank certificates, licenses, passports, private securities, or unused postal stamps is also against the law.
• TV programs, films, video tapes, others' portraits of other people or other materials may be copyrighted. Unauthorized video printing of such materials may infringe the provisions of the copyright law.

When disposing of the printer

Formatting of the printer may not erase the data in the internal memory completely. When you dispose of the printer, we recommend that you physically destroy the printer.

About the Memory Cards

"Memory Stick" media

Notes on use

• Do not insert more than one “Memory Stick” media at the same time, which may cause trouble with the printer.
• If you insert a “Memory Stick Micro” media into the printer without an M2 adaptor, you may be unable to remove the “Memory Stick Micro” media.
• If you insert the “Memory Stick Micro” media into an M2 adaptor, and insert the M2 adaptor into a “Memory Stick Duo” media adaptor, the printer may not operate properly.
• When you format a “Memory Stick” media, use the format function of the printer or your digital camera. If you format a “Memory Stick” media with your computer, images may not be displayed properly.
• When you format a “Memory Stick” media, all the data including the protected image files will be erased. To avoid erasing important data by accident, make sure to check the contents of the “Memory Stick” media before formatting.
• You cannot record, edit or delete data if you slide the write-protect switch to LOCK.

- Do not attach any other material than the supplied label on the labelling position. When you attach the supplied label, be sure to attach it to the labelling position. Be careful that the label does not stick out.

SD memory Card

The SD memory Card/xD-Picture Card dual-format slot of the printer allows you to use the following:

• SD memory Card *1
• miniSD memory Card, microSD memory Card (An adaptor is necessary.) ^2
• SDHC memory card *3
• MMC standard memory card *4

We do not guarantee proper operations for all types of SD memory Cards and MMC standard memory cards.

*1 The printer has been demonstrated as operable with an SD memory Card with a capacity of 2 GB or smaller.
*2 Some commercially available card adaptors have projected terminals on the rear. This type of adaptor may not work properly with the printer.

xD-Picture Card

With the SD memory Card/xD-Picture Card dual-format slot of the printer, you can use an xD-Picture Card ^4 . Not all the memory card operations are supported and we do not guarantee proper operations for all types of xD-Picture Card.

CompactFlash card

The CompactFlash card slot of the printer allows you to use the following:

- CompactFlash Storage Card (Type I/Type II) and CF+Card (Type I/Type II)-compatible CompactFlash Storage Card ^67 .

You can also use a Smart Media cardby using a commercially available CompactFlash card adaptor ^4

However, we do not guarantee proper operations for all types of CompactFlash cards.

*6 Use a CompactFlash card with a power specification of 3.3V or 3.3V/5V. You cannot use a type for 3V or 5V only. Do not insert other types of CompactFlash card into the printer's insertion slot. The printer may be damaged.
*7 The printer has been demonstrated as operable with an CompactFlash with a capacity of 32 GB or smaller.
*8 When using a commercially available CompactFlash card adaptor, refer to the operating instructions of the adaptor you use for how to install the card and adaptor. When using the CompactFlash card adaptor, the write-protected card may not work properly.

Notes on using memory card

• When using a card, make sure to check correct insertion direction of the card and correct insertion slot.
• Do not remove a card or turn off the printer while the printer is reading or accessing data, or the access indicator is flashing.
• We recommend that you save backup of the important data.
• The data processed with the computer may not be played with the printer.
• When you carry or store a card, put it in the case supplied with it.
• Do not touch the terminal of a card with your hand or a metal object.
• Do not strike, bend or drop a card.
• Do not disassemble or modify a card.
• Do not expose a card to water.
• Do not use or store a card under the following conditions:

- Locations beyond the required operational conditions including locations such as the hot interior of a car parked in the sun or/ and in the summer, the outdoors exposed to direct sunlight, or a place near a heater

– Humid locations or locations with corrosive substances present
- Locations subject to static electricity or electrical noises

Glossary

DCF (Design rule for Camera File system)

This printer conforms with the DCF (Design rule for Camera File system) standard established by JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association) to maintain file exchangeability and compatibility between digital cameras and related products. Complete exchangeability and compatibility, however, are not guaranteed.

DPOF (Digital Print Order Format)

The format used to record the information necessary for automatically printing images shot by a digital camera at a printing shop or with a home-use printer. The printer supports DPOF printing and can automatically print the preset number of copies of the DPOF preset images.

Exif 2.21 (Exif Print)

Exif (Exchangeable image file format for digital cameras) Print is a global standard for digital photo printing. A digital camera supporting Exif Print stores the data relevant to the conditions of shooting as each shot is taken. The printer utilizes the Exif Print data stored in each image file to ensure the printed result matches the original shot as closely as possible ^4 .

^1 When the “Auto Fine Print 6” is enabled and an image (JPEG file) is shot by an Exif Print (Exif 2.21)-compliant digital camera, the image is automatically adjusted to its optimum picture quality and printed.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)

The HDMI is an interface for transmitting digital video/audio signals on a single cable without compression and conversion. You can enjoy high quality video and audio reproduction.

Note: The printer does not support audio output.

"Memory Stick" media/CompactFlash card/SD memory Card/xD-Picture Card

Compact, light, removable storage media. For details see pages 79 to 81.

PictBridge

A standard specified by Camera & Imaging Products Association that allows you to connect PictBridge-complaint digital camera directly to the printer without a PC, enabling direct printing on the spot.

Thumbnails

Miniature images for representing the original images that are stored in the image files taken by a digital camera. The printer uses thumbnails in the index view.
