Introduction

Full-body tanner

With this tanning appliance you can suntan comfortably at home. The tanning lamps emit visible light, heat and ultraviolet light, giving you the impression you are sunbathing in real sunlight. This appliance tans your whole body evenly from head to toe.

A timer ensures that each tanning session does not last longer than 30 minutes. Just as with natural sunlight, overexposure must be avoided (see chapter 'Tanning and your health').

Important

Before connecting the appliance to the mains socket, check if the voltage indicated on the type plate corresponds with the mains voltage in your home.

- Water and electricity are a dangerous combination! Therefore, do not use the appliance in wet surroundings (e.g. in the bathroom or shower, or near a swimming pool).

• If you have just been swimming or have just taken a shower, dry yourself thoroughly before using the appliance.

- Remove the mains plug from the wall socket after use.

• Take care that children cannot play with the appliance.

- Keep the ventilation openings in the upper casing clear of obstruction when using the tanning appliance.

- Do not exceed the advised session times or the maximum amount of tanning hours (Also see 'Tanning sessions: How often and how long?').

- Do not select a shorter operational distance than the advised 20 cm.

- Do not treat each part or side of the body more often than once a day. Avoid intensive skin exposure to natural sunlight on the same day as a UV session.

- If you have any symptoms of illness, if you take any medicines and/or apply cosmetics which increase skin sensitivity, you should not have a UV-session.

• Special care is also necessary in cases of pronounced individual sensitivity to ultraviolet light. When in doubt, please consult your doctor:

- A tanning appliance is not to be used by people who get sunburnt without tanning when exposed to the sun, by persons suffering from sunburn, by children, or by persons who suffer (or have previously suffered) from skin cancer or who are predisposed to skin cancer.

- Consult your doctor if ulcers, moles or persistent lumps develop on the skin.

- Always wear the protective goggles provided with the appliance while tanning to protect your eyes against overexposure (also see the chapter 'Tanning and your health').

- Remove creams, lipstick and other cosmetics well in advance of a UV session.

- Do not use sunscreen lotions or creams.

- Do not use suntan lotions or creams.

• If your skin should feel taut after the sun tanning session, you may apply a moisturizing cream.

- Never use the tanning appliance if the timer has become faulty.

Colours may fade under the influence of the sun. The same effect may occur when using the appliance.

- Do not expect the appliance to yield better results than the natural sun.

If the mains cord of this appliance is damaged, it must always be replaced by Philips or a service centre authorised by Philips in order to avoid hazardous situations.

Tanning and your health

The sun, UV and tanning

The sun

The sun supplies various types of energy. Visible light enables us to see, ultraviolet (UV) light gives us a tan and the infrared (IR) light in sunrays provides the heat in which we like to bask.

UV and your health

Just as with natural sunlight, the tanning process will take some time. The first effect will only become visible after a few sessions (see 'Tanning sessions: how often and how long?').

Overexposure to ultraviolet light (natural sunlight or artificial light from your tanning appliance) can cause sunburn.

Besides many other factors, such as overexposure to natural sunlight, incorrect and excessive use of a tanning appliance may increase the risk of skin and eye problems. The degree to which these effects occur is determined by the nature, intensity and duration of the exposure on the one hand and the sensitivity of the person involved on the other hand.

The more the skin and the eyes are exposed to UV light, the higher the risk of keratitis, conjunctivitis, damage to the retina, cataracts, premature skin ageing and the development of skin tumours will be. Some medications and cosmetics increase the sensitivity of the skin.

• Therefore it is highly important:

  • that you follow the instructions given in 'Important' and 'Tanning sessions: how often and how long?';
  • that you do not exceed the maximum number of tanning hours per year (see 'Tanning sessions: how often and how long?');
  • that you always wear the goggles provided while tanning;
  • that you select the advised operational distance of at least 20 cm.

HB554: tanning sessions: how often and how long?

Take one tanning session a day for five to ten days. Wait at least 48 hours after the first session before taking the second session. After this 5 to 10-day course, we advise you to give your skin a rest for a while. Approximately one month after a course, your skin will have lost much of its tan. You can then start a new course. If you want to keep your tan, do not stop tanning after the course, but continue taking one or two tanning sessions a week.

Whether you choose to stop tanning for a while or whether you continue tanning on a lower frequency, always keep in mind that you must not exceed the maximum number of tanning hours. For tanning appliance type HB554 (8 tube lamps) the maximum is 26 hours (= 1560 minutes) a year.

Example

Suppose you are taking a 10-day course, consisting of a 10-minute tanning session on the first day and a 25-minute tanning session on the following nine days.

The entire course will then last (1 × 10 minutes) + (9 × 25 minutes) = 235 minutes.

This means you can take 6 of these courses a year, as 6 × 235 minutes = 1410 minutes.

Of course, this maximum amount of tanning hours is valid for each treated part or side of the body separately. (E.g. for the front side of your body and for the other side.)

Table

As is shown in the table, the first session of a tanning course should always last 10 minutes, irrespective of the sensitivity of the skin.

If you think that the sessions are too long for you (e.g. if the skin gets taut and tender after the session), we advise you to reduce the sessions by e.g. 5 minutes.

To get a beautiful all-over tan it is suggested that you turn slightly during the session so that the sides of your body are better exposed to the tanning light.

HB555 and HB556: tanning sessions: how often and how long?

Take one tanning session a day for five to ten days. Wait at least 48 hours after the first session before taking the second session. After this 5 to 10-day course, we advise you to give your skin a rest for a while.

Approximately one month after a course, your skin will have lost much of its tan. You can then start a new course. If you want to keep your tan, do not stop tanning after the course, but continue taking one or two tanning sessions a week.

Whether you choose to stop tanning for a while or whether you continue tanning on a lower frequency, always keep in mind that you must not exceed the maximum number of tanning hours. For tanning appliance HB 555 and HB556 (10 tube lamps) the maximum is 23 hours (= 1380 minutes) a year.

Example

Suppose you are taking a 10-day course, consisting of a 9-minute tanning session on the first day and a 25-minute tanning session on the following nine days.

The entire course will then last (1 × 9 minutes) + (9 × 25 minutes) = 234 minutes.

This means you can take 5 of these courses a year, as 5 × 234 minutes = 1170 minutes.

- Of course, this maximum amount of tanning hours is valid for each treated part or side of the body separately. (E.g. for the front side of your body and for the other side.)

Table

As is shown in the table, the first session of a tanning course should always last 9 minutes, irrespective of the sensitivity of the skin.

Preparing for use

Fixing the stand

1 With one person helping you, lay the tanning appliance on a table top with the lamps facing downwards (fig. 2). 2 Fasten the castor wheels to the stand by means of the spanner (fig. 3). 3 Mount the stand to the rod (fig. 4). 4 Use the socket wrench to fasten the rod with the socket screws provided (fig. 5). 5 Lift the tanning appliance from the table top (fig. 6). 6 Remove the plastic foil from the acrylic sheet (fig. 7).

  • You can tan either lying, (fig. 8).
  • sitting, or (fig. 9).
  • standing with this tanning appliance (fig. 10).

To make this possible, you can adjust the height and position of the upper casing.

During tanning, the distance between the acrylic sheet and your body should be at least 20 cm.

If you intend to tan while lying, this means that the distance between the acrylic sheet and your bed, couch or mattress should be at least 40 cm (fig. 11).

Height adjustment

1 Rotate the height adjustment knob anti-clockwise two or three turns to release the rod (fig. 12). A gas spring stabilizes the position of the rod. 2 Adjust the height of the rod by pulling or pushing (fig. 13). 3 Turn the height adjustment knob clockwise until tight to lock the rod (fig. 14).

Using the appliance

Check the distance between your body and the tanning appliance (min. 20 cm). If necessary adjust the height and/or position of the tanning appliance. 2 Set the timer to the session time (fig. 15). (Please refer to one of the tables in these instructions and to your own notes.) 3 Do not forget to put on the protective goggles provided.

As soon as the session time has elapsed the lamps will automatically be switched off.

If you wish to treat the other side of your body as well, you can set the timer again (it is necessary for the HB556 to cool down for 3 minutes before the lamp for the face tanner will restart again).

The facial tanner (HB556 only) can be switched on or off by 'B'.

Lying

Place the tanning appliance beside a bed or couch. 2 As the stand is on wheels you can draw the tanning appliance towards you while lying (fig. 16). 3 Ensure that the lamps are positioned straight above you. 4 After use, you can push the tanning appliance away from you to make getting up easier.

Sitting

I Place a chair and the tanning appliance together (fig. 17). 2 Bring the tanning appliance in optimum position by turning the upper casing.

Standing

Turn the upper casing to bring it into a vertical position. If necessary, adjust the height. Stand in front of the tanning appliance - at least 20 cm away (fig. 18).

Storage

The tanning appliance takes up very little space when stored in a vertical position (fig. 19).

Cleaning

Always unplug the tanning appliance and let it cool down before cleaning.

You can clean the outside of the tanning appliance with a damp cloth. Make sure that no water runs into the appliance.

Do not use abrasives or scourers.

Never use liquids such as alcohol, methylated spirits, petrol or acetone to clean the acrylic sheet as this may cause irreparable damage.

Replacement

The light emitted by the tanning lamps will become less bright in time (i.e. after a few years in case of normal use). When this happens, you will notice a decrease in the tanning capacity of the appliance. You can solve this problem by setting a slightly longer tanning time or by having the tanning lamps replaced.

Have the tanning lamps and/or starters replaced by a service centre authorised by Philips. They have the knowledge and skills required for this job and the original spare parts for your tanning appliance.

If you really insist on replacing the tube lamps and/or starters yourself, you should proceed as follows:

First remove the mains plug from the wall socket. Loosen the screws and remove the two end caps (fig. 20). Pull out the acrylic sheet completely (fig. 21). After this, the lamps and starters are accessible. Rotate the lamps slightly to the left or to the right. When unlocked, remove them from the lamp holders. Remove the starters by turning slightly to the left and withdrawing. To place new lamps and starters, proceed in reverse order and direction. Slide the acrylic sheet back into the profile.

Do not forget to fix the end caps by means of the screws.

▶ Type HB556 only: The lamp of the facial tanner may only be replaced by service personnel authorised by Philips.

The tube lamps of tanning appliances contain substances which may pollute the environment. When discarding old tube lamps, please ensure that they are separated from the normal household refuse and that they are disposed of at an officially assigned place.

Troubleshooting

If the tanning appliance should not operate as required, this may be due to a defect. In this case do not hesitate to apply to your dealer or to a Philips Service Centre.

However, it is also possible that the appliance has not been installed according to the instructions or is used incorrectly. If this is the case, you will be able to solve the problem immediately.

ProblemPossible cause
Tanning appliance does not switch on.Mains plug is not in wall socket.
No mains power (please check with other appliance).
Timer has not been set.
The lamp of the face tanner (HB556 only) is still too warm to restart (allow the lamp to cool down for approx. 3 minutes).
The power fuse switches the mains power off when switching on or while using the tanning appliance.Check the fuse of the circuit to which the tanning appliance is connected. The correct fuse type is a 16A standard fuse or an automatic fuse. The fuse may also blow, because you have connected too many appliances to the same circuit.
Poor tanning resultsYou are using an extension cord that is too long or does not have the correct current rating. Consult your dealer. Our general advice is not to use an extension cord.
You followed a course which is not the most appropriate for your skin type.
The operational distance is larger than indicated.
When the lamps have been used for a long time, the UV light will decrease. This effect only becomes noticeable after several years. You can solve this problem by selecting a longer tanning time or by having the lamps replaced.
