Health and Safety Precautions

Only qualified persons are authorized to carry out maintenance on this device.

Read this User Manual carefully ✦ and follow the correct procedure when setting up the device.

Do not open a disk drive or attempt to disassemble or modify it. Never insert any metallic object into the drive to avoid any risk of electrical shock, fire, short-circuiting or dangerous emissions. The disk drives

shipped with your LaCie LaCinema Rugged contain no user-serviceable parts. If it appears to be malfunctioning, have it inspected by a qualified LaCie Technical Support representative.

Never expose your device to rain, or use it near water, or in damp or wet conditions. Never place objects containing liquids on the LaCie LaCinema Rugged, as they may spill into its openings. Doing so increases the risk of electrical shock,

short-circuiting, fire or personal injury.

Make sure that the computer and LaCie LaCinema Rugged are electrically grounded. If the devices are not grounded, there is an increased risk of electrical shock. Power requirements 100-240 V\~, 1.5 A, 60-50 Hz, (Supply voltage fluctuations not exceeding ± 10% of the nominal, transient over-voltages according to over-voltage category II).

General Use Precautions

Do not expose the LaCie LaCinema Rugged to temperatures outside the range of 5°C to 30°C (41°F to 86°F); or to operational humidity beyond 5-80%, non-condensing, or non-operating humidity beyond 10-90%, non-condensing. Doing so may damage the LaCie LaCinema Rugged or disfigure its casing. Avoid placing your LaCie LaCinema Rugged near a source of heat or exposing it to sunlight (even through a window). Inversely, placing your LaCie LaCinema Rugged in an environment that is too cold or humid may damage the unit.

◆ Always unplug the LaCie LaCinema

Rugged from the electrical outlet if there is a risk of lightning or if it will be unused for an extended period of time. Otherwise, there is an increased risk of electrical shock, short-circuiting or fire.

Use only the power supply shipped with the device.

Do not place objects on top of the LaCie LaCinema Rugged or use excessive force on it.

✿ Never use excessive force on your LaCie LaCinema Rugged. If you detect a problem, see the Troubleshooting section in this manual.

CAUTION: A shielded-type power cord is required in order to meet FCC emission limits and also to prevent interference to the nearby radio and television reception. It is essential that only the supplied power cord be used.

Operating Environment Temperatures

Do not expose the LaCie LaCinema Rugged to temperatures outside the range of 5°C to 30°C (41°F to 86°F). As high end audio/video appliance, the LaCie LaCinema Rugged has been designed with an efficient ventilation system. Allow 5 cm of clearance for airflow on all sides of the LaCinema Rugged to prevent overheating. See Fig. A.

Do not stack the LaCie LaCinema Rugged on another audio/video appliance such as a TV, VCR or DVD player. Other audio/video appliances require sufficient airflow and carry the same precautions of use. See Fig. B.

IMPORTANT INFO: Any loss, corruption or destruction of data while using a LaCie drive is the sole responsibility of the user, and under no circumstances will LaCie be held liable for the recovery or restoration of this data. To help prevent the loss of your data, LaCie highly recommends that you keep TWO copies of your data; one copy on your external hard disk, for instance, and a second copy either on your internal hard disk, another external hard disk or some other form of removable storage media. LaCie offers a complete line of CD and DVD drives. If you would like more information on backup, please refer to our website.

IMPORTANT INFO: 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Once formatted, the actual available storage capacity varies depending on operating environment (typically 5-10% less).

The portable LaCie LaCinema Rugged plugs directly into a wide array of audio/visual equipment for instant playback of stored home movies, music or photos. And with high-quality video and quality audio, there's no compromise on performance.

To get started, use your Mac or PC to transfer your movies, music and photos to the LaCie LaCinema Rugged. Then, simply connect the LaCie LaCinema Rugged to your TV and use the included remote to easily navigate through the menus to listen to music, view photos or watch movies.

The LaCie LaCinema Rugged allows you to choose from MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (AVI, VOB, IFO, ISO) and MPEG-4 (AVI, XviD) video formats for easy playback.

1.5. Cables and Connectors

A/V (Audio/Video) Cables1.5.1.

The A/V cables provide the audio and video signals to your stereo and TV. The LaCie LaCinema Rugged supports the A/V standards shown below:

1. Composite video/stereo audio – This is the most standard video connection (yellow) as well as left (white) and right (red) stereo audio inputs. If your TV only has a SCART connector, you can purchase an adapter from your local retailer that will allow you to connect the composite video/stereo audio plugs to the SCART connection.
2. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) – This is the best audio/video method for connecting the LaCinema Rugged to HDTVs.

USB Cable1.5.2.

USB is a serial input/output technology for connecting peripheral devices to a computer or to each other. Hi-Speed USB 2.0 is the latest implementation of this standard, and it provides the necessary bandwidth and data transfer rates to support high speed devices such as hard drives, CD/DVD drives and digital cameras.

Included USB Cable

Your LaCie LaCinema Rugged is shipped with a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 cable, to ensure maximum data transfer performance when connected to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. The cable will also work when connected to a USB port, but drive performance will be limited to USB 1.1 transfer rates.

TECHNICAL NOTE: To achieve Hi-Speed USB 2.0 data transfer rates you need to be connected to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 host interface. Otherwise, transfer rates will be limited to USB 1.1 speeds.

2. Uploading Multimedia Files

2.1. Connecting the LaCinema Rugged to Your Computer

Connect the USB cable to the LaCinema Rugged and to 1. your computer (Fig. 2.1).

1. If your computer USB port does not provide enough power, you may need to connect the power supply which turns on the LaCinema Rugged.
2. The LaCinema Rugged icon will appear on your computer (on the desktop for Mac users, and in the My Computer folder for Windows users) after a few seconds.

Proceed to section 2.2. Transferring Files to the LaCinema Rugged.

2.2. Transferring Files to the LaCinema Rugged

2.2.1. Uploading Multimedia Files

When the LaCie LaCinema Rugged is recognized by your computer, you can start adding your music, photos and videos. To add files, simply drag and drop the appropriate files and folders. Organize folders any way you want.

To remove files from their folders, simply drag them to the Trash or the Recycle Bin.

After transferring files, make sure to safely disconnect the LaCinema Rugged and its power supply. For details, see 2.3. Disconnecting Your LaCie LaCinema Rugged.

IMPORTANT INFO: If you want to remove files from the LaCie LaCinema Rugged, you must empty the Trash or Recycle Bin after placing the files there. Otherwise, the files will still have a reference and occupy hard drive space.

2.2.2. Data File Storage

You can also use your LaCie LaCinema Rugged to store standard data files. Just create a separate folder (such as "Backup") on the drive for storage and simply drag and drop files into it.

2.3. Disconnecting Your LaCie LaCinema Rugged

External USB devices feature "plug & play" connectivity, which means that your drive can be connected and disconnected while the computer is running. To prevent failures, however, it is important to follow these steps when disconnecting your LaCie hard drive.

Windows Users

From the System Tray (located in the lower right-hand 1, side of your screen), click the Eject icon (a small green arrow over a hardware image).

1. A message will appear, listing the devices the Eject icon controls (it should say, "Safely remove..."). Click on the LaCie hard drive in this prompt.

2. This message will appear: "Safe to Remove Hardware" (or similar). It is now safe to disconnect the device.

Mac Users

Drag the LaCinema Rugged drive icon to the trash. 1. (The icon pictured below is a generic USB device icon. Your drive may be represented by an icon that looks like the drive itself.)

1. When the icon disappears from the desktop, the drive can be disconnected.

3. Connecting the LaCinema Rugged to Your TV

The LaCie LaCinema Rugged can be connected to your television only or to your television and to your stereo.

Connect the external power supply to the LaCinema Rugged and to a grounded electrical outlet (Fig. 3.1)

3.2.1. Composite Video & Stereo Audio Cable

To connect the LaCinema Rugged to TV via a stereo audio and composite video cable, power on the LaCinema Rugged as described in section 3.1. Power Connection and follow the diagram below.

To connect the LaCinema Rugged to a TV via HDMI video, power on the LaCinema Rugged as described in section 3.1. Power Connection and follow the diagram below.

Once connected, press the "gear" button and select the Video menu in order to adjust, if necessary, the video output resolution of the product to match your TV's resolution from 720p to 1080p.

TECHNICAL NOTE: By default your LaCinema Rugged is set to Composite Video Out mode (the yellow connector). To switch to HDMI mode, turn on the LaCinema Rugged using the power button on the remote control and then press the Info button.

The cable allows you to connect the LaCinema Classic to a Digital Audio amplifier. Power on LaCinema Rugged as described in section 3.1. Power Connection and follow the diagram below.

IMPORTANT INFO: Make sure that you have enabled Digital Audio in the setup menu instead of the default analog audio. See section 5.5.2. TV Mode.

4. Using the Remote Control

Some of the buttons of the remote control have different functions or no function at all depending on the type of file you are viewing. This chapter discusses the button functions for each type of file (movies, photos and music) and battery installation.

4.1. Battery Installation

The remote control uses two AAA batteries. The batteries are not pre-installed, so you will need to install them before you can use the remote control.

To install the batteries:

Remove the battery compartment cover.1.

Load the batteries onto the battery compartment. Position 2. the batteries so that the "+" symbols on the batteries face the same direction as the "+" symbols on the battery compartment.

1. Slide the battery compartment cover back into the remote.

IMPORTANT INFO: If you will not be using the remote control for an extended period of time, LaCie recommends that you remove the batteries.

4.2. Remote Control Key Index

The LaCie LaCinema Rugged's remote control allows you to control the LaCie LaCinema Rugged while its connected to your TV or home theatre center.

5. Playing Multimedia Files

The following sections provide an overview of the different menu options of the LaCie LaCinema Rugged while it is connected to your TV.

When you first power on the LaCie LaCinema Rugged, the Main Menu appears after a few seconds. From this menu, you can choose from four different media:

Movies

Music

Photos

All Media

TECHNICAL NOTE: The LaCinema will perform a hard disk scan. The duration of the scan will depend on the number of files on the disk.

Movies Menu5.1.

You can scroll through the menus using the navigation buttons. To confirm your choice and enter a menu, press the Play button.

This menu will display all of the video files that you have uploaded to your LaCie LaCinema Rugged.

Only files recognized as movie files will be displayed. Music and photo files will not be displayed. To view all file types, select the Browser menu.

You can scroll through the list of movie files and folders using the Up and Down buttons, Right button to open a folder and Left to move to upper folder level.

To confirm your choice, press the Play button.

A loading animation will appear while the movie is being analyzed to ensure optimum playback experience.

TECHNICAL NOTE: Movie loading can take up to 15 seconds depending on file length and encoding parameters.

During the file playback, you can retrieve movie information and adjust several playback parameters. Press the i button to display or exit the on-screen menu.

File information5.1.1.

The information screen gives you main movie and playback information.

IMPORTANT INFO: The LaCie LaCinema Rugged is not designed, intended or may be used to violate any one's copyright or other IP (Intellectual Property) rights. Each LaCie LaCinema Rugged user may only use their LaCie LaCinema Rugged in conjunction with materials legally owned or licensed by such user, and only to the extent that such ownership or license rights permit such use.

Auto Bookmark5.1.2.

If a movie has been stopped before its end and is played back again later on, a message will ask whether to resume from the last stop position or to start from the beginning. The last five movies will be kept in memory for future playback resumption.

Music Menu5.2.

You can scroll through the menu using the navigation buttons. To confirm your choice and enter a menu, press the Play button.

This menu will display all of the audio files that you have uploaded to your LaCie LaCinema Rugged. Only files recognized as movie files will be displayed. Movies and photo files will not be displayed. To view all file types, select the Browser menu.

You can scroll through the list of music tracks and folders using the Up and Down buttons, Right button to open a folder and Left to move to upper folder level. To confirm your choice, press the Play button.

During the file playback, you can adjust several playback parameters. Press the i button to display or exit the on-screen menu.

Screensaver

After one minute of music playback, a screensaver will appear. Press the Play button to display the Music menu.

Photos Menu5.3.

You can scroll through the menu using the navigation buttons. To confirm your choice and enter a menu, press the Play button.

This menu will display all of the image files that you have uploaded to your LaCie LaCinema Rugged. Only files recognized as movie files will be displayed. Movies and music files will not be displayed. To view all file types, select the Browser menu.

You can scroll through the list of photos and folders using the Up and Down buttons, Right button to open a folder and Left to move to upper folder level. To confirm your choice, press the Play button.

To change the settings of the Photos Menu, please go to the Settings menu.

This menu will display all the multimedia files (not categorized by Movies, Music, etc.) that you have up loaded to your LaCie LaCinema Classic.

You can scroll through the menu using the navigation buttons. To confirm your choice and enter a menu, press the Play button.

You can scroll through the list of photos and folders using the Up and Down buttons, Right button to open a folder and Left to move to upper folder level. To confirm your choice, press the Play button.

Setup Menu5.5.

The LaCie LaCinema Rugged Setup menu will help you to properly configure and customize your device.

Scroll through the Setup menu using the Up and Down buttons.

To display the available options of a setup category, press the Right button. To confirm your choice, press the Play button. All changes are automatically saved.

Press the Setup button to display the main menu on the screen. When the setup menu is shown, the playback will be automatically paused.

Press the Up and Down buttons to select the desired setup, then press the Play button to confirm. Press the Left and Right buttons to select the submenu, then press Play.

To select another option, press the Left button to go back to an previous menu. Press the Setup button again to exit the setup menu from the screen.

Audio Out5.5.1.

Analog – Select Analog if your LaCie LaCinema Rugged is connected to a standard TV set or stereo with the red and white analog audio connectors.

Firmware Update5.6.

The LaCie LaCinema Rugged allows you to update its firmware by loading downloaded firmware updates in the Update folder.

To update the firmware:

1. Go to www.lacie.com/support and click on the Downloads link.
2. Regget the firm most redewrlaCinema load. Connect your LaCinema Rugged to your computer. Drag the firmware file you just downloaded into the Update folder on the LaCinema Rugged. Disconnect the LaCinema Rugged from your computer and connect it to your TV.
3. Go to Browser view from the main menu.

Select the Update folder and press the OK button4. to open it.

1. Selectto/Cinema Ruggedfw.bin' file and press the OK button. The firmware update will begin.
2. Whershaw firmware update is completed at 100% "Power Off Player ..." (Fig. 5.6), power off LaCie LaCinema Rugged by disconnecting the AC adapter jack on the back of the product.
3. RelConnect the power jack and power on the LaCie ema Rugged to restart the product using the new firmware.

CAUTION: Never turn off the LaCie LaCinema Rugged during the Firmware Update process! Doing so may damage your device. If, for any reason, the procedure fails (e.g. a power failure occurs during the update), you may not be able to use your LaCie LaCinema Rugged. Please contact your reseller or LaCie Customer Support for more information.

Windows Users6.1.

IMPORTANT INFO: The drive should not be reformatted to a file system other than FAT32 or NTFS. If the drive is formatted in a different format (such as HFS+), files will NOT appear on your television screen. For details, see 1.4. Views of the LaCinema Rugged.

The process of formatting a drive on a computer running Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista consists of two steps: (1) installing a signature on the drive, and (2) formatting the drive. These steps will erase anything that is on the disk.

CAUTION: Following these steps will erase everything from the LaCinema Rugged. If you have information that you want to protect or continue to use, back up this information before performing these steps.

1. Connect the drive to the computer via the interface port.
   Right-click 2. My Computer and select Manage.
2. Disk the "Computer Management" window, select Management (located below the Storage group). See Fig. 6.1-A.
3. If the "Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard" window appears, click Cancel.
4. Windows will list the Hard Disks that are installed on the system. Locate the drive that is represented by the icon. Right-click the icon and select Initialize.

XviD Compatibility7.1.

The LaCie LaCinema Rugged is fully compatible with the XviD format (an ISO, MPEG-4 compliant video codec), and can play any video encoded with this compression format.

7.2. Optimizing Data Transfers

Data transfers are the flow of data that accomplishes a task, usually related to moving data from storage to computer RAM, or between storage devices. With external drives, such as the LaCie LaCinema Rugged, the data is transferred from the drive to the computer via the USB interface. The data is fed from the drive through the USB port on the drive, and passes to the computer through the USB host-bus adapter interface.

USB

To utilize the enhanced Hi-Speed USB 2.0 performance, your computer must be equipped with a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 host bus adapter card (either sold separately, or integrated by your computer's manufacturer) and the appropriate drivers. These host bus adapter cards, which include one or more USB ports, are shipped with special Hi-Speed USB 2.0 drivers that enable the computer to control the card. These drivers must be installed in order for USB 2.0 devices connected to the port to work at their correct speeds.

Computers running Windows XP and Windows Vista automatically manage Hi-Speed USB 2.0 devices and drivers, while Windows 98 SE and Windows Me will require that drivers be installed before a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device is attached.

Mac OS 9.x does not support Hi-Speed USB 2.0 functionality, and all Hi-Speed USB 2.0 devices will only operate at the original USB specifications. Mac OS 10.2.7 and later supports Hi-Speed USB 2.0. 8.1. Troubleshooting: Mac Users

The drive is not recognized by the computer.	Does an icon for the drive appear on the desktop?	There should be an icon for the LaCie drive on the desktop. If the drive does not appear, follow the rest of the Troubleshooting tips to isolate the problem.
	Does your computer's configuration meet the minimum system requirements for use with this drive?	See section 1.1. Minimum System Requirements for more information.
	Is the drive's power supply connected?	Make sure that the power supply is properly connected (see section 2.1. Connecting the LaCinema Rugged to Your Computer) and that the outlet the power supply is connected to is working.
	Did you follow the correct installation steps for the specific interface and operating system?	Review the installation steps in section 2.1. Connecting the LaCinema Rugged to Your Computer.
	Are both ends of the USB cable securely attached?	Only use a USB cable provided by LaCie. Check both ends of the USB cable to make sure they are fully seated in their respective ports. Try disconnecting the cables, waiting 10 seconds, and then reconnecting them. If the drive is still not recognized, restart your computer and try again.
	Is there a conflict with other device drivers or extensions?	Contact LaCie Technical Support for help.
	Does your computer's operating system support the file system?	Check your computer's documentation and see section 7. Reformatting the LaCinema Rugged for more information.

Error messages under Mac OS 10.x.	Did you get an “Error -50” message while copying to a FAT 32 (MSDOS) volume?	When copying files or folders from Mac OS 10.x to a FAT 32 volume, file names with certain characters cannot be copied. These characters include, but are not limited to: ? < > / \ :Check your files and folders to ensure that these types of characters are not being used.
The drive is not running noticeably faster when connected via Hi-Speed USB 2.0.	Are you operating in Mac OS 9.x?	Apple does not support the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 standard under Mac OS 9.x. You will be limited to the slower transfer rates of the original USB standard. For more information, please see section 7.4. Optimizing Data Transfers.
	Is the drive connected to a standard USB port on your computer?	If your drive is connected to a standard USB port, this is normal. A Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device can only operate at Hi-Speed USB 2.0 performance levels when it is connected directly to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. Otherwise, the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device will operate at the slower USB transfer rates. For more information, please see sections 7.4. Optimizing Data Transfers and 1.5. Cables and Connectors.

8.3. Troubleshooting: TV/Stereo Connection

Problem Question	Answer
Checking the firmware version.	How do you know which firmware version your LaCie LaCinema Rugged is using?	To check which firmware is currently installed on your LaCie LaCinema Rugged, attach it to your TV and use the remote control to navigate to the Settings menu. The firmware version is displayed in the upper left corner of the Settings menu.
	How do you get new firmware, and how do you install it?	For a detailed explanation, please see section 5.5. Firmware Update or go to www.lacie.com.
There is no picture being displayed.	Are all of the cables connected correctly?	Ensure that all of the cables are connected correctly. If you are using the Composite A/V cable, make sure that the component cable is not plugged in at the same time. See section 4. Connecting The LaCie LaCinema Rugged to Your TV and Stereo.
The picture is in black and white or there is no picture being displayed.	Is the LaCie LaCinema Rugged's Video setting correctly set?	In the event that there is an error with the Video setting, press the i button on the remote control until the correct image is displayed. After the picture is being displayed, go into the Settings menu and select Video Settings. From there, you can select the correct settings. For more information, please see section 4.2.1. Functions of the Basic Buttons.
Optimizing video connections.	What connectivity method will produce the best quality?	For optimal quality and performance, the best video connection is the HDMI cable (included). For more information, please contact your LaCie reseller or LaCie Customer Support.
There is no sound when connecting the LaCie LaCinema Rugged to a digital stereo.	Have the Audio Settings been adjusted?	When using the A/V cable to connect the LaCie LaCinema Rugged to a TV, go into the Settings menu and select Audio Settings. From this menu, you will need to select the Analog option instead of Digital.
Viewing photos. Does it take several seconds to load a picture?		Depending on file size, photos may take several seconds to load properly. Reducing the photo's resolution will reduce the file size, as well, and allow the file to load faster.

LaCie warrants your drive against any defect in material and workmanship, under normal use, for the period designated on your warranty certificate. In the event this product is found to be defective within the warranty period, LaCie will, at its option, repair or replace the defective drive.

This warranty is void if:

The drive was operated/stored in abnormal use or maintenance conditions;

The drive is repaired, modified or altered, unless such re-pair, modification or alteration is expressly authorized in writing by LaCie;

The drive was subjected to abuse, neglect, lightning strike, electrical fault, improper packaging or accident;

The drive was installed improperly; ◆

The serial number of the drive is defaced or missing;

The broken part is a replacement part such as a pickup tray, etc.

The tamper seal on the drive casing is broken.

LaCie and its suppliers accept no liability for any loss of data during the use of this device, or for any of the problems caused as a result.

LaCie will not, under any circumstances, be liable for direct, special or consequential damages such as, but not limited to, damage or loss of property or equipment, loss of profits or revenues, cost of replacement goods, or expense or inconvenience caused by service interruptions.

Any loss, corruption or destruction of data while using a LaCie drive is the sole responsibility of the user, and under no circumstances will LaCie be held liable for the recovery or restoration of this data.

Under no circumstances will any person be entitled to any sum greater than the purchase price paid for the drive.

To obtain warranty service, call LaCie Technical Support. You will be asked to provide your LaCie product's serial number, and you may be asked to furnish proof of purchase to confirm that the drive is still under warranty.

All drives returned to LaCie must be securely packaged in their original box and shipped with postage prepaid.

480p – Also known as 480 progressive, this is a form of standard-definition digital television (SDTV) which is similar to VGA computer displays. A DVD's resolution is 480p, but this resolution can only be seen when the DVD player outputs a progressive-scan signal, and the television has progressive-scan or component-video inputs.

720p - Also known as 720 progressive, this is one of two formats designated as a high-definition digital television (HDTV), ATSC DTV standard. This technology uses progressive scanning and is comprised of 720 vertical pixels by 1,280 horizontal pixels.

1080i – Also known as 1080 interlaced, this is the second of two formats designated as a high-definition digital television (HDTV), ATSC DTV standard. This technology uses interlaced scanning and is comprised of 1,080 vertical pixels by 1,920 horizontal pixels.

AC3 (Audio Coding 3) – This is an advanced audio compression technology that allows encoding of six separate channels at a bit rate of 448kbits/s.

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) – A file format that can contain audio/video compressed standards using different combinations of codecs (e.g. DivX® video file and a WMA audio file). DivX® – A video codec developed from the new MPEG-4 compression standard, which allows for compression/decompression of videos into a specified format. The DivX® codec can play movies using any DivX®-enabled player, such as the LaCie LaCinema Rugged. DivX® movies offer better compression and higher quality than standard MPEG movies.

DTS – Digital sound technology, which provides the technology for virtually all movie soundtracks.

Firmware – Permanent or semi-permanent instructions and data programmed directly into the circuitry of a programmable read-only memory or an electronically-erasable, programmable read-only memory chip. Used for controlling the operation of

the computer or tape drive. Distinct from the software, which is stored in random access memory and can be altered.

ID3 Tag – An embedded tag in MP3 files that communicates a song's title, artist and album. These tags can be edited.

MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) – These are the developers of the MPEG-1 (VideoCDs), MPEG-2 (DVDs and SuperVCDs) and MPEG-4 (DivX®, WMV) video compression standards. The MPEG group is also responsible for the development of the MP3 and AAC audio compression standards.

NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) – This group is responsible for the development of a set of protocols used for transmission and reception of TV broadcasts in the United States. An NTSC image has 525 horizontal lines per frame, which are interlaced from left to right, top to bottom. NTSC signals are not directly compatible with computer systems.

PAL (Phase Alternation Line) – This is the analog TV display commonly used in Europe. The PAL image has 625 horizontal lines per frame, and the color definition differs slightly from the NTSC standard.

VOB (Video OBjects) – The format in which DVD movies are stored. Within each VOB file, a number of video/audio/subpicture streams are stored. Subpicture streams refer to the subtitles on DVDs and other VOB files. These subtitles are video streams that overlay the main picture stream, and can be turned on or off.

WMA (Windows Media Audio) – An audio format developed by Microsoft® for audio streaming and compression.

XviD – A video codec, very similar to DivX®, based on the MPEG-4 compression standard. This an open-source video codec that is currently being developed around the world. The XviD codec can play movies using any XviD-enabled player, such as the LaCie LaCinema Rugged.
