Quality Entertainment. Everywhere,

Styling a compact, computer-friendly audio system like a pair of rhino horns may seem a dicey decision, but the form of the aluminum-bodied SPINNAKER kind of follows its function. The top of each horn incorporates a midrange and a tweeter, while the bottom has a down-firing woofer. That little silver thing in front of the speakers is the awesome wireless remote, which controls volume, on/off, and forward/reverse track skip.

SPINNAKER includes Bluetooth capability plus USB, optical digital, and analog inputs. At just \$349, the SPINNAKER seems very reasonably priced, and it was able to totally rock the English Beat's “Hands Off She’s Mine” even on the loud trade show floor.

It's easy to laugh off artistic audio designs as all looks, no performance, but Edifier doesn't fit that stereotype. The company showed off some ridiculously cool-looking stereo speakers that might as well have been stolen off the set of a Tim Burton film. Available in a dazzling array of bright colors, like the red shown here, the Spinnaker is a 2.2 system—each speaker has a down-firing 25Watt subwoofer built-in, in addition to an 8Watt tweeter and a 9Watt mid-range driver. They sounded pretty powerful during the demo, and they can connect via 3.5mm cable to a computer or mobile device, or they can stream audio via Bluetooth. Look for them in March for \$299, when PCMag can give them a fairer listen than the CES show-floor provided.

Edifier Spinnaker Bluetooth Speaker System: Striking appearance, amazing sound

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/08/06/edlfler-spinnaker-bluetooth-speaker-system-striking-appearance/ by Steven Sande Aug 6th 2012 at 11:30PM

Edifier is an international manufacturer of a number of electronics accessories, including iPhone/iPod docks like the Tick Tock Dock. While I was less than impressed with the sound and design of that retro alarm clock dock, Edifier's e30 Spinnaker Bluetooth Speaker System (US\$399.99) looks like it's going to be a winner for the company. Let's take a look at these visually striking (and great-sounding) speakers.

Design

The first thing that hits you when you see the Spinnaker speakers is the design, which is unique amongst Bluetooth speaker systems. These gently curving cones look either like rhinoceros horns or fully deployed spinnakers on a sailboat. Available in black or burgundy, the speakers stand about 16 inches tall.

Edifier Spinnaker Bluetooth Speaker System

Each Spinnaker includes three amplifiers pushing a 10 W tweeter, a 10 W 2-3/4" midrange speaker and a 25 W 4" downward-firing bass speaker. The Spinnaker set includes a small dome-shaped Bluetooth remote -- and what I mean by that is that it's a manual remote that communicates with the Spinnaker via Bluetooth. You turn it clockwise to turn up the volume, just like a volume knob, and the bottom glows red to let you know that it's communicating with the speakers. The control also works to skip to the next or previous track, pause and resume playback, and adjust the volume. The remote is rechargeable via an included USB to micro-USB cable.

Not only can you bump your tunes to the Spinnaker speakers over Bluetooth, but the speakers also include an AUX input and an optical audio input (cables included) for connectivity to gaming consoles and multimedia systems. For extra bass, there's a separate subwoofer output. The two speakers are tied together via a proprietary cable, and there's a 5 V power brick that supplies juice to the active speaker.

Functionality

As with all speaker and headphone reviews, it's important realize that sound reproduction methods and the sounds perceived by the reviewer are very subjective, so your results may vary from mine. I found the sound quality to be excellent, as one would expect with three separate amplifiers and three decently sized drivers per speaker. If you use the speakers next to a Mac (the Edifier site shows one Spinnaker on either side of an iMac, for instance), expect to be blown away by the volume and clarity of the Spinnaker system.

One interesting note: when I played music from my iMac (late 2009), the sound quality was often choppy. Playing the same tunes from a late 2010 MacBook Air, iPhone 4S or third-generation iPad resulted in amazing sound quality and additional volume. My guess is that it's the Bluetooth 4 capabilities of the newer Mac, the iPhone and the iPad that work so well with the speakers. So that's a warning to potential purchasers -- pairing with a fairly new Apple product will get you best sound quality over Bluetooth.

Conclusion

If you want more than the plain box shape on a good-sounding Bluetooth speaker system, then you'll definitely want to take a look at the Edifier Spinnaker. The speakers look great and the sound is hard to beat. Audiophiles with recent Bluetooth devices who want to beam tunes to these speakers will be quite happy.

Explanations of Spinnaker Attributes...

Tri-Amping is the practice of connecting three audio amplifiers to a loudspeaker unit: one to power the bass driver (woofer), one to power the mid-range and the third to power the treble driver (tweeter). A single amplifier can usually power a woofer, mid and tweeter only through a crossover filter, which protects each driver from signals outside its frequency range. However, the crossover itself wastes power, so tri-amping is a way to avoid this problem. The technique is primarily used in large-scale audio applications such as sound amplification for concerts, in portable powered speakers and by hi-fi enthusiasts.

Possible phase shifts from a passive crossover are eliminated by using DSP electronic crossovers within the Spinnaker's amplifiers. In addition, we free up valuable internal space within the Spinnaker by eliminating a fairly large passive crossover printed circuit board, with coils, capacitors and resistors. The more internal air volume we have, the better and deeper the bass can become.

The Shape of Spinnaker enhances the sound in several ways. Traditional small square boxes have a tendency to create internal standing waves and cavity resonances from the rear radiation of the attached loudspeaker driver. These left unchecked, can cause an audible "boxy" sounding coloration on voices and most types of music. By using a tapered cylindrical shape used on the Spinnaker, internal standing waves and resonances are unable to collect to a measurable degree in any one area within the enclosure, and in fact cancel themselves out at various frequencies.

Additionally, by introducing a strong aluminum frame, together with judicious use of internal damping materials, overall unwanted enclosure vibration and resonances are kept to an absolute minimum. These techniques combined, result in a considerable reduction of audible coloration, with a more lifelike and accurate sound presentation for the listener.

The Frequency Response specification describes the range of frequencies of musical tones a loudspeaker can reproduce, measured in Hertz. The range of human hearing is generally regarded as being from 20Hz, very low bass tones, through to 20kHz (20,000Hz), the very highest frequencies the ear can detect. As one ages, the ultra highest frequencies will become less noticeable, with many people above 45 years old only being able to detect 15kHz or so.

When Edifier R&D engineers measure their loudspeaker systems, they are looking for smooth even curve charts. Noticeable peaks or troughs that are excessive can cause audible unevenness and unwanted coloration. The amount the curve deviates is measure in decibels. Generally, the allowed deviation for the industry is considered to be +/-3dB. The theory is that 3dB differences are 'just perceptible,' so a loudspeaker whose response curve lies within that tolerance window is considered to be a reasonably accurate sounding system.

With Edifier's new Spinnaker 2.0/2.1 system, the measured frequency response in our state of the art anechoic chamber measures a very smooth 66Hz – 20kHz +/-3dB. Using the tighter deviation window of +/-2.5dB, the response measures 72Hz – 20kHz. However, even with all of the world's most sophisticated measuring and test equipment available at our disposal, nothing can ever rival the human ear. Each design regardless of price point, undergoes many hours of rigorous listening tests spanning weeks, and even months. These results combined ensure that the new sensational Edifier Spinnaker system will deliver smooth and accurate sound to all genres of music in a wide variety of home and room settings.
