Frequently Asked Questions - GH20LP20 LG

How do I install the LG GH20LP20 drive?
Turn off the system power, disconnect the power cord, and remove the computer cover. Set the jumper on the rear of the drive to Master or Slave as needed. Slide the drive into a vacant 5.25" bay, connect the IDE data cable and a 4-pin power cable, then replace the cover and restart the computer.
How should I set the jumper for the GH20LP20?
If connecting to the same primary IDE channel as the hard drive, set the jumper to Slave. If using a secondary IDE channel with no other device, set to Master. If two drives are on the same channel, set one to Master and the other to Slave.
What type of IDE cable is recommended?
An 80-pin E-IDE cable is highly recommended to avoid '04/08/03' CRC errors. A 40-pin cable may cause issues. For optimal 20x writing, use an 80-pin cable with a Pentium IV 2.4 GHz or faster processor.
Which discs are recommended for best performance?
For CD-R, use LG, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, Verbatim, That's, Ritek, or HP. For DVD±R, use Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, That's, Maxell, or Verbatim. Using recommended brands helps ensure write quality and compatibility.
Does the GH20LP20 support LightScribe?
No, the GH20LP20 model does not support LightScribe direct label printing. The GH20NP20 version supports it.
How can I update the firmware?
Visit www.lgservice.com and install the LG ODD Online F/W Update program. It will automatically check for the latest firmware and update the drive.
What should I do if I get a '04/08/03' CRC error?
This error is often caused by using a 40-pin IDE cable. Replace it with an 80-pin E-IDE cable. Also ensure the drive is set to the correct master/slave configuration and check for any motherboard compatibility issues.
Can I mount the drive vertically?
Yes, the drive can be mounted vertically. However, 8cm discs can only be used with the drive placed horizontally.
What is the maximum write speed for DVD-RAM?
The GH20LP20 supports DVD-RAM write speeds of 2X, 3X, 5X, 6X, 8X, and 12X (for Version 2.0 discs and higher).
What precautions should I take when handling this drive?
The drive contains a Class 1 laser that can damage eyes. Do not open the cover; there are no user-serviceable parts inside. Avoid exposure to rain or moisture to reduce fire and electric shock risk. Use anti-static protection when handling.

B. When using a Secondary IDE port

① If there is no device connected to the secondary IDE channel, connect the drive to this channel and set the jumper to MASTER.
② When two drives are connected, set one drive to MASTER and the other drive to SLAVE. If your operating system encounters interface problems after installing the new drive, try swapping the jumpers or move one drive to another IDE channel.

Connect the IDE data cable/DC power cable to the drive.

① Connect the IDE data cable to the back of the drive.

* Using a 40-pin IDE cable might bring the '04/08/03 error (LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32))'. In this case, as a substitute 80-pin type IDE cable is highly recommended. This kind of error is hardly detected from some specific motherboard.
