Frequently Asked Questions - FMA-D Vello

How do I attach the flash to my camera?

Slide the flash's foot into the camera's hot shoe until it clicks. Ensure the locking pin is engaged.

What batteries does the FMA-D use?

It uses 4 AA batteries. Alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries are recommended.

How do I switch between TTL and Manual mode?

Press the 'Mode' button on the back of the flash. Cycle through TTL, Manual, and other modes. The current mode is displayed on the LCD screen.

Can I use this flash off-camera?

Yes, the flash has an optical slave mode. Set the flash to slave mode and it will trigger when it detects another flash burst.

What is the maximum flash range?

At ISO 100, the guide number is 30 (meters). The actual range depends on aperture and ISO settings.

How do I clean the flash?

Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Avoid using liquids or abrasive cleaners.

Why is my flash not firing?

Check that batteries are installed correctly and charged. Ensure the flash is securely mounted and turned on. If using TTL, verify compatibility with your camera.

Can I use this flash with my Nikon/Canon camera?

The FMA-D is designed for select Vello cameras. For other brands, it may work in manual mode but TTL may not be supported. Check your camera's hot shoe compatibility.

How long does the battery last?

With alkaline batteries, you can expect 200+ flashes per set. Rechargeable NiMH batteries may give similar or slightly less performance.

What is the recycle time?

The recycle time ranges from 0.5 seconds (full power) to 5 seconds (full power with weak batteries). Using fresh batteries reduces recycle time.

The Vello Flash Multiplier is the ideal tool to focus and concentrate your on-camera flash so you can extend the light over long distance when using lenses of 300 mm or greater. This helps when you're out shooting wildlife, like birds in tree tops, and need proper illumination without getting too close. Looking at direct sunlight through the fresnel lens, or pointing the flash multiplier directly into your subject's eyes at close distance, may result in damage to the eyes.

Always remove or cover this lens when not in use.

USER INSTRUCTIONS

1. Align both gray touch-fastener strips on the Flash Multiplier and the universal flash ring holder. Make sure the ring holder's white dots are facing you. The gray side will be on top when mounted on your flash.

2. Pull the opposite end to the holder, followed by the two sides, and press their touch-fastener strips together

3. Fold over the touch-fastener flaps, and press to secure.

1. Slide the flash adapter ring onto your flash head, with the arrow to the left. For the FMA-LG and FMA-SM adapters, make sure the edge of the head is flush with inside pads of the adapter.

2. Align the arrow of the adapter ring with the first white dot on the holder as shown.

3. Seat the adapter ring into the holder, and rotate clockwise until the arrow aligns with the second white dot and locks in place.

1. Remove the Fresnel lens from its sleeve, and line up the lens's touch-fastener strips with the strips on the front of the Flash Multiplier. Press in place.

Note: For best results, set the flash-head distance to 50 mm or greater.

To use the Flash Multiplier as a softbox, remove the Fresnel lens and attach the diffuser.

ONE-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY

This VELLO product is warranted to the original purchaser to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal consumer use for a period of one (1) year from the original purchase date or thirty (30) days after replacement, whichever occurs later. The warranty provider's responsibility with respect to this limited warranty shall be limited solely to repair or replacement, at the provider's discretion, of any product that fails during normal use of this product in its intended manner and in its intended environment. Inoperability of the product or part(s) shall be determined by the warranty provider. If the product has been discontinued, the warranty provider reserves the right to replace it with a model of equivalent quality and function.

This warranty does not cover damage or defect caused by misuse, neglect, accident, alteration, abuse, improper installation or maintenance. To obtain warranty coverage, contact the Vello Customer Service Department to obtain a return merchandise authorization (“RMA”) number, and return the defective product to Vello along with the RMA number and proof of purchase. Shipment of the defective product is at the purchaser’s own risk and expense.
