Frequently Asked Questions - Leslie G 37 Hammond

How do I connect the Leslie G 37 to my organ?
Use a 5-pin Leslie cable from the organ's Leslie output to the speaker's input jack. Alternatively, a 1/4 inch line input can be used for other instruments.
How do I switch between slow and fast rotary speed?
Connect a foot switch (momentary) to the speed control jack. Pressing the switch toggles between chorale (slow) and tremolo (fast). Some organs also have a drawbar control.
What is the recommended maintenance for the rotary mechanism?
Periodically lubricate the motor bearings with a light oil. Check the drive belts for wear every two years. Keep the horn and drum clean from dust.
Can I replace the amplifier with a tube amplifier?
The G 37 is designed with a solid-state amplifier. Replacing it with a tube amp would require significant modification and is not recommended.
How do I clean the cabinet?
Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the vinyl covering. For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen the cloth with water. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.
The speaker produces a rattling noise. What should I check?
First ensure all screws on the cabinet and rotating assembly are tight. Check for loose objects inside the cabinet. If the rattle persists, inspect the rotating horn for balance or bearing wear.
Is the Leslie G 37 compatible with modern keyboards?
Yes, you can connect a keyboard via the 1/4 inch input. However, the classic Leslie effect is optimized for organ. Use an adapter if needed.
What type of foot switch is required?
A momentary (normally open) foot switch with a 1/4 inch TS plug is recommended. The switch should be a latching type for some models; consult your manual.
How do I adjust the balance between horn and woofer?
The G 37 has internal level controls for the horn and woofer. Access them through the back panel. Use a screwdriver to adjust for desired tonal balance.
Where can I purchase replacement tubes or belts?
Authorized Hammond dealers or Leslie service centers stock parts. You can also order online from reputable Hammond parts suppliers. Always specify model G 37.

Thank You!

We greatly appreciate your purchase of a genuine LESLIE speaker system. If this is your first purchase of a LESLIE product, we would like to welcome you into the LESLIE family. If you are a repeat customer, thank you for your continued confidence in our LESLIE products

Your genuine LESLIE speaker system was engineered and manufactured to the most stringent-quality standards, reproducing the full-spectrum sound of musical instruments and housed in an acoustically engineered, road-worthy cabinet, to assure your genuine LESLIE will sound and look great for many years to come. Your LESLIE speaker is the result of many years of research and dedication to the art of sound reproduction and is carefully designed and tested to provide long and dependable service

Many features have been included in this speaker to insure the finest sound from your guitar, acoustic instrument, or microphone. Please take a moment to carefully read this manual and familiarize yourself with many of the fine features found in your new genuine Leslie speaker system. Take pride in being the owner of the most innovative sound system in the industry today.

Your Guitar Leslie Model G37/27 is the first-ever genuine LESLIE speaker to be designed from "the ground up" for electric and acoustic guitars. The same principles and patented technologies that have been perfected in our legendary-keyboard LESLIES have been employed in the G37/27.

As in the keyboard LESLIES, the G37/27 contains two rotors to produce the world-renowned "sound-in-motion" effect. The upper frequencies are reproduced by a specially designed high-compression driver coupled to the patented dual rotary horn. A 12" vintage-voiced V30 full-range guitar speaker reproduces the lower frequencies that fires down into our patented high-density drum. Two virtually noiseless motors spin the rotor and drum at speeds specified by you at the control panel.

The included FS-10TL footswitch controls the fast and slow speeds, and also turns the motion "off", if desired. New to the G37/27 is a feature that stops the horn and rotor in such a position, when "off" is selected, all sound emanates from the front of the cabinet. This allows the G37/27 to behave like a typical guitar amp, and also allows proper coverage when microphones are used to re-amplify the G37/27. The optional V-20RT "Speed Pedal" allows continuous control of speed, with the ability to hold at any point. This is the first time that you will be able to have a LESLIE spin at the exact speed you desire.

The G37 comes equipped with a 100-watt 2-channel guitar amplifier. A real-tube preamp allows you to gently warm your tone, or push it all the way to crunch overdrive. A switch on the panel chooses the clean or overdrive channel. The optional footswitch can be used to remotely change the channels. There are independent volume controls for each channel. The overdrive channel also adds a gain control and "contour" control, which permits you to tailor the midrange to your exact choice. A three-band equalizer serves both channels.

The G27 has all the rotary functions as described above, but without the 100-watt guitar amp. You use the G27 as an auxiliary rotary speaker with your own guitar amp or sound reinforcement system.

G37 Leslie Setup Procedure

  1. Place your LESLIE speaker in a place that produces the best sound reproduction.
  2. Insert the AC power cord into the AC receptacle located on the rear panel of your Leslie. Plug the other end of the cord into a 120V AC/60hz outlet.
  3. Insert the 1/4" male plug of the FS-10TL dual footswitch into the "Rotor Control-Foot Switch" jack located on the rear panel of the Leslie.
  4. If available, insert the 1/4" male plug of the optional V-20RT Speed Pedal into the "Rotor Control Speed Pedal" jack located on the rear panel of the Leslie.
  5. If available, insert the 1/4" male plug of the optional FS-1TL "Channel Footswitch" into the "Ch Select Foot Switch" jack located on the rear panel of the Leslie.
  6. Connect your guitar with a 1/4" shielded cable to either the High or Low input jack. (Use the "high" input jack when a fuller, chunkier sound is desired, and the "low" input jack when a cleaner sound is desired.)
  7. Make sure both volume controls are set fully counter-clockwise to the zero position.
  8. Set the Overdrive Gain control to the minimum position (full counter-clockwise).
  9. Set the Contour, Treble, Mid, and Bass controls to the "12:00" position.
  10. Set the Rotor Speed Controls to the detent positions (at "12:00").

  11. Make sure that the Channel select switch is "out" (indicator light is on).

  12. Place the power switch on your LESLIE to the "on" position and slowly raise the volume controls. Experiment with the other controls.

CAUTION-The Leslie speaker volume control of the "clean" channel should be set to prevent distortion or overdriving the speakers. Excessive input may cause serious damage to the Leslie and void your warranty. Use the "Overdrive" channel to obtain distortion-tone.

Try the different speeds with different EQ settings. Depress the channel select switch to access the overdrive channel. Rotate the "contour" control to find your favorite sound. Please note that when the channel select switch located on the rear panel of the Leslie is depressed (Overdrive channel is ON), the FS-1TL Channel select footswitch will not function.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you intend to "mic" the G37/27, do so ONLY from the FRONT of the cabinet. (The controls are on the "back" of the cabinet). Do NOT mic from the sides. This is because the sound is directed from the front only of the cabinet when the rotary speed is set to the "off" position.

G-27 SETUP:

  1. Follow steps 1,2,3,4 and 6 as outlined in the G37 Leslie Setup Procedure.
  2. Using a 1/4" speaker cable, connect the Speaker output of your amplifier to the "Speaker Input" jack located on the rear panel of the Leslie.

CAUTION: Make sure that the impedance of your amplifier is 8 ohms and its maximum output is 100 watts RMS or less.

YOU CANNOT USE THE LESLIE G37 (100-Watt amp equipped) AS AN EXTERNAL SPEAKER CABINET LIKE YOU CAN WITH THE G-27. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONNECT YOUR G-37 AS DESCRIBED IN THE G-27 SETUP ABOVE. SERIOUS DAMAGE WILL OCCUR.

USE OF THE OPTIONAL V-20RT SPEED PEDAL

The V20-RT is a first for the LESLIE product line. Until now, with the classic keyboard LESLIES, you had three choices of rotor speed-Fast, Slow, and Off. On the G37 and G27, when you add the optional V20-RT pedal, you have continuous control of the speed of the rotors. You can also stop the travel of the pedal at any point to "freeze" the speed at that point. One of the favorite effects made possible by the LESLIE speaker is called "Ramping". This refers to the "speeding up" or "slowing down" of the rotors as you play. With the V20-RT you control the speed of the rotors. This is great for building emotion into your playing.

Caution: The Leslie G37/G27 has been designed to work only with the optional V-20RT Speed Pedal. Serious damage to your Leslie may occur if another type of pedal is plugged into the "Rotor Control Speed Pedal" jack. There are MIDI volume/control/expression pedals that appear similar to the V20-RT, but they will not work with your G37/G27.

G37/27 F.A.Q.'s

Can I play my keyboard into the Leslie G37/27?

You can plug any musical instrument with a 1/4" plug into your Leslie speaker, but strangely enough, we don't recommend keyboards be used with the G37. The high frequency driver and the mid-range guitar speaker do not have a wide enough frequency response to accurately reproduce all of the sounds found in an organ, synth, or piano. The amp is also voiced for guitar, so the sonic range may be too thin for the wide and dynamic range of a keyboard. We highly recommend our LESLIE 2101 or 3300 for keyboard use.

Can I use other manufacturer's foot pedals for the "speed pedal"?

No. The G37/G27 Leslie motor control circuits have been designed only to work with our V20-RT speed pedal. Serious damage to your Leslie can occur if you use another manufacturer's pedal.

Do the motors in my G37/27 need "oil" like a traditional Leslie?

No. The long life, ultra quiet motors supplied with the G37/G27 Leslie are maintenance-free and do not require oiling.

Do I need to remove the panels on the back to get a better sound?

No. Remember that when the rotors are on "brake"(or off) the sound comes out of the front. Don't ever remove any of the panels-To do so will invalidate your warranty and could create a hazardous situation. Mic it from the front!

Is the G37/27 a "Real" Leslie?

As real as it gets! The G37/27 is based on all the original principles and patents invented by Mr. Donald Leslie in 1941. Think of your G37/27 as a "mini-me" of the big classic Leslies. Of course, you have the advantage of all of the modern world's updates like the silent motors in your G37 (Don would have loved them).
