'53 Corvette Roadster
The origin of the Chevrolet Corvette goes back to the former General Motors chief designer, Harley Earl. After attending a car race in September 1951 he came up with the idea of developing a completely new sports car. At this time European motor-cars enjoyed great popularity in the USA, especially amongst young people. The new sports car was aimed at breaking this supremacy. In keeping with the young target group Earl planned to create a small, inexpensive, but sporty two-seater, which should be similar in design to the European cars. Initially only an open top sports car was envisaged, fitted with a fibreglass body for weight reduction - a world first. The decision to build a prototype was taken in June 1952, and to display it in the famous "Motorama" travelling exhibition of 1953 under the name "Corvette". This first truly American sports car experienced great response and acceptance which persuaded the management of the Chevrolet Motor Division to begin mass production in June of the same year.
The car was much smaller than the usually large US sedans of the 1950s. In 1953 a mere 300 examples of the Corvette were built so that all these cars were ultimately handmade. It weighed in at only 1300 kg (2866 lbs). This was amongst other things, due to the manufacturing of the fibreglass body which proved initially to be problematic. The construction was based on an in-house steel chassis, which gave the one-piece floor-pan more rigidity. Equally new were the leaf springs mounted outside of the chassis frame. All of the cars had a white body with red interior and black roof. The 155 bhp in-line 6 cylinder engine with a displacement of 3850cc gave an acceleration time of 11 seconds from 0 – 60 mph (100 km/h) and a top speed of 107mph (172 km/h). In order to cope with the high rpm, the engine – designated „Blue Flame Special“ - had overhead cam-shafts, a high compression ratio and a modified cylinder head with twin valve springs. In 1954 it became possible to order the car in various colours and the performance was increased.
Initially the Corvette could not achieve high sales figures but GM rode out the storm and the breakthrough came in 1955 with the introduction of the Small Block V8 engine. The 1953 Corvette however laid the foundation stone of a fabulous success story, which still continues today, over 60 years later.

GB: ATTENTION: Read the instructions thoroughly prior to assembly. Each component is numbered (1). Adhere to specified sequence of assembly. Tools required: knife and file for removal of components from frame (2); rubber band, adhesive tape and clothes pegs for clumping components together after applying adhesive (3). Clean plastic components in a mild detergent solution and allow to air-dry so that paint and transfers adhere better. Prior to applying adhesive, check to see whether the components fit together; apply adhesive sparingly. Remove chrome and paint from the contact surfaces. Paint small components before removing them from the frame (4) (5). Allow paint to dry well, and only then continues to assemble. Cut out each transfer individually and immerse in warm water for approx. 20 seconds. Slide transfer off paper and into designated position, then press on with blotting paper.
